The day that started his long adventure.

The 407th precinct bustled with activity. Sergeant O'Malley sat in his office, a hefty man in his late 50s with thinning gray hair and a thick mustache. His voice, gruff and booming, carried into the main office as he shuffled paperwork. Lieutenant O'Neil, a tall, fair-skinned woman with striking red hair, sifted through case files at her desk. She wore a button-up shirt, skin-tight jeans, and sneakers - practical for a day's work. Detective Brooks, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit and tie, scanned a file with an expression of intense focus. Meanwhile, Lazarus "Lars" Pitino, thin and wiry, juggled phone calls and note-taking at his desk, his hoodie and sneakers giving him a more casual air than his peers.
Drake Newmen strolled down the hallway toward the bullpen. At twenty-eight, Drake was broad-shouldered and carried himself with a mix of confidence and restlessness. His short, spiky dark hair added to his rugged charm. Wearing his signature red, white, and black biker jacket over a t-shirt and jeans, he waved to his colleagues as he passed. Most responded with distracted nods or murmurs, buried in their work.
"Morning, everyone!" Drake announced as he reached his desk. The room responded with muted indifference.
Drake sighed, then headed to the coffee maker. He poured himself a cup, took a sip, and grimaced. "God, the coffee here is awful."
Lars looked up with a sly grin. "Then why don't you buy a new coffee maker?"
"Screw you, Lars," Drake shot back, smirking.
Lars raised his hands in mock offense. "How many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that?"
"Because 'Hey - Zeus' is already taken!"
The two men lunged at each other in playful combat, throwing mock punches until Detective Brooks intervened with an exasperated, "Alright, knock it off."
The banter was cut short when Sergeant O'Malley emerged from his office, tugging at his belt.
"Heads up, everyone! We've got a lead on Windel Debbs. Informants tracked him to an old brick house on the east side."
At the mention of Windel, Drake's fists clenched. "Windel," he muttered through gritted teeth.
Windel "Diamond Dust" Debbs had been a thorn in Drake's side for years - a petty thief turned drug dealer who left destruction in his wake. Drake's vendetta against Windel was deeply personal. Years ago, a shooting orchestrated by Windel had claimed the life of Drake's best friend. That evening, Drake and Lieutenant O'Neil sat in an unmarked car across from Windel's suspected hideout, a decrepit two-story building in a crumbling neighborhood.
Drake tapped his foot nervously, the motion relentless. O'Neil sighed. "Drake, stop bouncing your damn leg. You're giving me a headache."
"Sorry," Drake said, though he didn't stop immediately. "I'm just... anxious. What are we waiting for, anyway? Let's go in now."
"We wait until they come out," O'Neil replied firmly. "Safer that way. SWAT can handle the hard part."
Drake was silent for a moment before offering a sheepish smile. "Hey, uh... I need to use the bathroom. There's a shop down the block. You good if I-"
"Fine. But don't miss the action," O'Neil warned, waving him off.
Drake nodded and stepped out of the car. But instead of heading toward the shop, he veered into a nearby alley, slipping toward the building's side entrance. Drake knocked on the side door, flashing his badge at the startled thugs who answered. Before they could react, he charged in, dispatching them with a flurry of punches and kicks. The hallway was dimly lit, the air damp and heavy with the stench of mildew. Drake moved quickly, adrenaline coursing through him. He found a locked door at the end of the hallway. Cursing under his breath he rifled through the thugs' pockets until he found a key. Pocketing a wad of cash he didn't feel guilty about confiscating, Drake returned to the door and unlocked it. Beyond it was another hallway, this one guarded by a thug on his phone. Drake tried to sneak past, but a gust of wind slammed the door shut behind him. The thug turned, muttering something in Spanish about the bathroom before returning to his call. Drake exhaled in relief and continued up a creaky staircase, ignoring the grotesquely bug-eyed Chihuahua-pug mix that followed him briefly before losing interest. At the top of the stairs, Drake could hear voices from a room down the hall. Drawing his gun, he approached cautiously.
Drake kicked the door open, gun raised. "POLICE! FREEZE!"
The room's occupants - Windel and two suspected drug bosses - froze in surprise before glaring at the intruder. Windel, disheveled in a stained trench coat, sneered.
"Well, if it isn't the heroic Officer Newmen,” Windel spat.
Drake smirked. "I was hoping for better company. Guess you've hit rock bottom, Windel." He gestured to the others. "What's this? A clown convention?"
The insult drew scowls but no immediate action. Drake pressed on, keeping his gun steady. "It's over. SWAT's outside, ready to storm this place. Surrender now, and maybe they'll go easy on you."
The sound of the SWAT team breaching the building punctuated his words. A flashbang grenade shattered through the window, detonating in a blinding burst of light and sound. Disoriented, Drake stumbled as shots rang out. A bullet grazed his shoulder, sending a jolt of pain through him. He ducked behind the doorway, returning fire blindly. The room erupted in chaos as Windel's accomplices fired wildly, their aim compromised by the effects of the grenade. One by one, the SWAT team converged. Barbara went down with a shot to the arm, and Luis fell, bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound. Windel seized the opportunity to flee, darting past Drake and crashing through a window onto the fire escape.
"Dammit!" Drake yelled, forcing himself to his feet. He chased after Windel, adrenaline overriding the pain in his shoulder.
Drake bolted after Windel, his boots clanging against the fire escape's metal steps. The icy night air stung his lungs, but he didn't slow. Above him, Windel scrambled onto the rooftop, his silhouette a shadow against the moonlit skyline.
"You're not getting away this time, Windel!" Drake shouted, gripping the rail as he hauled himself up.
Windel didn't respond. Instead, he darted across the rooftop, leaping over a gap to the next building with surprising agility. Drake followed, adrenaline surging as he soared over the gap, landing in a roll.
Windel paused near the edge of the second rooftop, turning to face Drake. "You should've stayed in your car, Newmen! You don't know when to quit, do you?"
Drake aimed his gun at Windel. "Hands in the air! It's over!"
Windel smirked, raising his hands slowly. "You think I'm scared of you?"
Before Drake could respond, Windel reached into his coat and pulled out a small grenade. He yanked the pin and tossed it at Drake, who dove for cover just as it exploded.
The blast sent debris flying and rattled the rooftop. Windel took the opportunity to jump to a fire escape on the adjacent building, vanishing into the shadows.
Drake groaned, brushing debris off his jacket as he rose to his feet. His shoulder throbbed where the bullet had grazed him, but he pushed the pain aside. He spotted Windel's trench coat disappearing down the fire escape and pursued him.
Drake reached the fire escape and climbed down swiftly. He landed in a dark alley, the smell of garbage thick in the air. The faint sound of footsteps echoed from the far end.
"Windel!" Drake shouted, his voice bouncing off the brick walls. "You've got nowhere to run!" Windel's laugh echoed back, hollow and mocking. "You don't get it, do you? This is my city, Newmen. You think you're the hero, but you're just another pawn."
The words struck a nerve, but Drake didn't falter. He followed the sound of Windel's voice, his gun drawn.
Drake emerged into a small, dimly lit courtyard. Broken streetlights cast long, eerie shadows over the graffiti-covered walls. Windel stood at the center, his hands in his coat pockets.
"This ends now," Drake growled, training his gun on Windel.
Windel chuckled. "You're so predictable, Newmen. Always charging in without a plan." Drake's eyes darted around the courtyard, searching for signs of an ambush. He spotted movement on the rooftops - two figures aiming rifles down at him.
"Drop your weapon," Windel said smugly. "Or my friends up there will turn you into Swiss cheese."
Drake hesitated, his mind racing. If he dropped his gun, he'd be defenseless. But if he didn't, he'd be gunned down.
Windel took a step closer. "You're outnumbered and outgunned. Face it, Newmen. You've lost."
Drake smirked. "You think so?"
Suddenly, the faint whir of a helicopter cut through the night air. A spotlight flooded the courtyard, blinding Windel and his accomplices.
"THIS IS THE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a voice boomed from above.
Windel cursed, reaching for his gun, but Drake was faster. He lunged forward, tackling Windel to the ground. The two men grappled, fists flying as the sound of gunfire erupted overhead. Drake managed to pin Windel, pressing his knee into the dealer's back. "It's over, Windel!" he snarled, slapping cuffs onto the man's wrists. By the time backup arrived, the rooftop gunmen had been apprehended, and Windel was hauled to his feet, scowling.
"You've got nothing on me," Windel sneered.
Drake wiped the blood from his lip and glared. "We'll see about that. But for now, you're off the streets."
As Windel was escorted into a squad car, Lieutenant O'Neil approached Drake, her expression a mix of relief and exasperation.
"Reckless as always," she said, shaking her head. "But you got him." Drake shrugged, wincing at the pain in his shoulder. "Somebody had to."
O'Neil smiled faintly. "Go get that shoulder checked. And for God's sake, take a day off. You've earned it."
Drake watched as the squad car carrying Windel disappeared into the night. For the first time in years, he felt a sense of closure-not complete, but enough.
With a deep breath, he turned and walked toward his car, ready to face whatever came next.
Drake sat in his car, the adrenaline beginning to ebb away, leaving an ache in his muscles and a weight in his chest. The city seemed quieter now, the streets deserted except for the occasional flicker of headlights in the distance.
His radio crackled. "Newmen, status update. Are you returning to the precinct?" He hesitated. The thought of filing reports and enduring O'Neil's "I told you so" wasn't appealing.
"Not yet," he replied. "I need a minute."
"Copy that," the dispatcher said.
Drake leaned back, staring at the ceiling of the car. Windel's words echoed in his mind: You're just another pawn.
The precinct buzzed with its usual chaos - phones ringing, officers barking orders, and the hum of hurried footsteps across tiled floors. Drake shuffled in, nursing a bitter coffee and a sleepless night.
O'Malley stood by the bullpen, arms crossed, his gaze cutting through the room like a laser. He spotted Drake immediately.
"Newmen," he barked. "In my office. Now."
Drake sighed, taking a long sip of his coffee before heading toward his glass-walled office. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
"What's this about?" he asked, slumping into a chair.
O'Malley didn't sit. He tossed a manila envelope onto the desk in front of him. "This just came down from the brass."
Drake opened the envelope, pulling out a slim file. His brow furrowed as he skimmed the contents.
"A transfer?" he asked, looking up at him.
"Temporary assignment," O'Malley clarified. "You're going to Japan."
Drake blinked, caught off guard. "Japan? What the hell for?"
O'Malley leaned against the desk, his tone softening slightly. "You're being loaned to Interpol.
They've got a joint task force working on a case that overlaps with one of ours. Something about an underground arms network - one we think Viper might be connected to."
Drake's stomach tightened. "You think Viper's in Japan?"
The arms dealer - known in the streets as "Viper" has always eluded capture, and even in cases Drake was on. He never found out if Viper was real or was part of a multiple-person organization that operated all over the United States. Up until this moment.
"Possibly," O'Malley said. "Or at least someone who knows where he is. Interpol requested someone with your expertise."
Drake leaned back in his chair, processing the information. "So, what? I hop on a plane, play nice with Interpol, and hope they have a lead?"
O'Malley shrugged. "That's the idea. You're good at sniffing out ghosts, Drake. And if Viper's involved, you've got the motivation to see this through."
Drake rubbed his temples. "How long?"
"A few weeks, maybe more," O'Malley said. "You'll be working with a liaison from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Someone named Detective Ayumi Tanaka."
Drake snorted. "Great. I'm sure she'll love having an American cowboy tagging along."
O'Malley's expression hardened. "This isn't a vacation, Newmen. Play by their rules, or you'll find yourself on the next flight home. Clear?"
Drake nodded reluctantly. "When do I leave?"
"Tomorrow morning. Get your affairs in order."
Back at his apartment, Drake packed a small suitcase, his mind racing with questions. If Viper was tied to this arms network, what was his endgame? And why resurface now, after all these years?
He glanced at the photo of Ellie on his desk. This case felt personal, but he couldn't decide if that was his gut talking or his grief.
Drake tossed some clothes into the suitcase, zipping it shut.
The next morning, Drake stood in the bustling terminal, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The overhead speakers announced flights in rapid succession, the din of travelers blending into white noise.
He approached the gate, handing his boarding pass to the attendant.
"Enjoy your flight, sir," she said with a polite smile.
Drake forced a nod, stepping onto the jet bridge. As he boarded the plane, he couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't just another assignment - it was the beginning of something bigger.
The neon glow of Tokyo greeted Drake as the plane descended, the city sprawling like a glittering web of lights. After clearing customs, he was met at the arrivals gate by a poised woman in a crisp black suit.
"Detective Newmen?" she asked, her English laced with a faint accent.
Drake nodded. "That's me. You must be Detective Tanaka."
She gave a curt bow. "Welcome to Tokyo. We have much to discuss."
As they walked toward the car waiting outside, Drake couldn't help but notice the tension in her shoulders and the way her eyes scanned the crowd.
"What's got you on edge?" he asked.
Tanaka glanced at him. "You're not the only one being watched, Detective." Drake frowned, his hand instinctively brushing against the gun holstered under his jacket.
