A Nights Drive
Two former school friends have a reunion which results in a a nights drive they'll never forget.
Have you ever been somewhere, a place that you know you shouldn't be and whilst you're there you feel instant regret? Well, that's me right now. I agreed to come and drive up to see and old friend of mine but as I sit here waiting for them to come out, I can't even concentrate. Every sound outside the car, every flicker of light, empties my stomach and fills it with stress. Let me tell you how this started....
Tyreq, is or was an old school buddy of mine. It's been a few years since we finished sixth form which many of you may know as college, we used to hang all the time. We'd laugh, be cool when it came to money and he knew my family well, they got on. But as school life was coming to a close a few things or accusations were made about me from other students and Tyreq was nowhere to be found. He said he didn't like to get involved which I understood but still hurt you know? Having no one stand up for you when you stand up for others is always hard and gets quite tiring to be honest. So after school finished and work life started, we parted ways. To be honest I don't think he even knows that I slipped out his life.
That's what I thought until a few days ago, when he hit me up asking how I've been and although it's been a few years, it was nice to catch up, see how he is and talk adult stuff. He actually has a kid of his own now but is having issues with the mother of the child. I'm not here to judge their relationship so I'll leave that there. So anyway, we meet up, go to nandos, have some bottomless drinks to go with it and just have a nice chat. I was able to get a car last month and I was proudly telling him and offering a lift home. Which he quickly accepted. I didn't want to be on the streets of London after dark, ironically not for crime reasons. According to the news crime is actually slowly is going down in the city but there's been rumours of bad weather at night and I've heard of loads of lightning injuries and some people crippled.
Things were ok until he asked me to stop off somewhere quickly, he actually said he'd get a uber home but me and my dumb self insisted I'd wait for him.
The crazy part? I ended up waiting over 20 minutes for him to come out the place and come out he did. Him and 2 other guys and a girl ran into the car. I was in shock, what do you do when that happens? One of the men in a balaclava pulls it off and shows that it's Tyreq. "It's me, it's me bruv, don't worry!"
But before I get time to say anything the guy behind me kicks my chair and shouts
"Are you driving or what?!"
Now this is the last thing I wanted or needed. But what can I do now? Hopefully they'll just all go away I guess, then there'll be less chance of me getting hurt. Something about these guys doesn't seem right. Could be the fact that they all came in masked and he kicked my seat into my already stressed out back. Ah lovely that nervous humour of mine.
All I know is that I have to get these guys away from me. Yes, they scare me but the rumours of what happens to criminals or people getting upto no good at night in London scares me even more.
After every fibre of my introvert self along with fear of my safety makes me ask...
'So where do you wanna go?'.... Sigh. I wanted to.... I need to talk about getting away from here, out my car you know stand up for myself? But the soft side doesn't want to risk anything so all I end up sounding like is someone's butler.
After some shouting and south London slang, they tell me what direction to drive. (more like threatened) But its not too long before I hear behind me.
"What's your friend so shook about? He's bare quiet!"
Followed by Tyreq timidly saying
"Nah man 'llow him man, it's just he's worried about them rumours, about being out and about at night innit."
This seems to satisfy the others but doesn't stop them sniggering at my expense.
After a few more minutes of driving the girl who's in my passenger seat screams in my ear " Oi!"
I can't lie to you; my hands jolted and made the car swerve a little bit. Which they all found funny.
All I wanted was to see an old friend and catch up and be nice, now because I don't have a backbone or couldn't say no, I'm scared stiff, hostage in a way in my own car!
But just when I think things couldn't get any worse, it starts to rain. The little faint flickers on the roof and windscreen make me speed up. Which again make them all laugh in the car.
"Scared of a bit of rain?" the guy sandwiched between Tyreq and Mr. Kicky sniggered before more silence.
The answer? Yes, I am a scared of a bit of rain, not for the rain but from the apparent stories or rumours of what I hear follows the rain.
We carry on and finally I see other headlights. Why are we near a field? I've watched enough crime watch to know where this could end for me but thankfully as I stop the car and see four other cars parked up, headlights on in the rain with other masked people all laughing and joking with each other. The Three extras opened the doors and left to go and embrace the others outside. Tyreq stayed and just looked at me with the same 'sorry bro' eyes I've seen so many times, before getting out the car himself. Still tense but now a little relieved, I begin to lock my doors and start my Google maps to go home, I do it in a not so obvious way. Time to plot my quick exit. But unfortunately, it no longer mattered, why you may ask? Well because the rain was followed by a flick of lightning and then thunder as the rain got heavier. Then the lightning strikes got brighter and closer. Until the rain, the thunder and lightning stops.... almost as if everyone outside and myself frozen in fear like a deer in headlights. Then a bright lightning strike hits, right in front of the car and between the group of masked people outside, everyone only looking and silent as if bracing for what was next. But as the brightness of the lightning dimmed a silhouette of a man, dressed in black was left behind. I wanted to believe it wasn't real, the rumors weren't true but it was, he was. The LIGHTNING BOLT.
That is the end of A Nights Drive. Thanks for reading.
