Mia recounts a terrifying day at urgent care, alone, elegant, and fighting to stay composed, only to discover how longing, faith, and an unexpected spark can illuminate even the darkest moments.

On Saturday, June 19th, 2024… at exactly 11:15 AM… I walked into the Kaiser Permanente Urgent Care center, alone.

My breath was unsteady. My left leg numb. My heart fluttering in a way that didn’t feel like nerves… but danger. And at that moment, I wished,
deeply, for a husband’s steady presence. A hand to hold. A voice to say, “I’m here.”

But I was alone.

Still… I entered that building as if stepping onto a runway.
A sultry Ralph Lauren V‑neck red dress.
Nude strappy sandals.
Black painted toes.

Because even in what I jokingly call my “Sick and Nearly Dead” state, thank you, Australian entrepreneur Joe Cross, I hold on to my femininity. It’s my armor. My ritual. My mother’s teaching. It’s the one thing I can control when everything else feels uncertain. And that day, uncertainty wrapped itself around me like a shadow.

But beneath all that polish… the truth remained.
I was by myself.

A severe drop in potassium, caused by my prescribed medication, had pushed me to the edge of a possible heart attack.
The medical team moved fast.
Intravenous (IV) potassium.
Extremely large Tablets.
Monitoring.
A new doctor.
A new medication.

And slowly… my body began to stabilize.
Hats off to the doctors.

As the hours passed, I watched people come and go, families comforting one another, partners whispering reassurance, friends waiting anxiously in chairs. I felt the ache of that absence. The quiet sting of having no one to update, no one to text, no one to say, “I’m scared.”

Hours later, 10:30 PM, I walked out of urgent care room and down the long corridor. Still alone. Still exhausted. Still processing how close I had come. The night air felt heavier than usual, wrapping around me like a reminder of my own fragility. I paused in the parking lot, letting the reality settle in: I had faced a life‑threatening moment with no one by my side. No partner to steady me. No familiar voice to say, “Let’s go home.” It was a sobering truth, one that pressed against my chest with unexpected weight.

And then…
A moment.
A spark.

A strikingly handsome doctor, tall, elegant man, walked toward me.
He smiled.
And he winked.

Thank heavens.
At least I didn’t look like I had danced with death.

My mother always taught me to present myself well in public. So… a quiet thank you to haute couture fashion designer Ralph Lauren for designing dresses that make a woman feel alluring, even when her world is falling apart.

It’s funny how divine intervention works.
How a single wink can soften a terrifying day.
How a stranger’s warmth can feel like a message from above.

Because the truth is… I was utterly alone during this chapter of my life.
And I can admit it now; these are the quiet musings of a woman longing for companionship.

Longing for a husband’s presence.
Longing not to weather storms in solitude.

This was my reminder… that even in fear, even in loneliness… grace still finds its way to me, wrapping me in the tender illusion of companionship when I needed it most.
