"Anonymous Gifts and Letters" Fiction
Lavish gifts appear at Mia’s doorstep, but the truth behind them is far stranger than desire.
As I approached my home’s front door, I was greeted by an unexpected sight: two beautifully crafted gift boxes. One box, a striking black, was adorned with a vibrant satin red ribbon tied into a large, dramatic bow. Its counterpart, a bold red box, boasted a contrasting black satin ribbon, equally elegant and impossibly enticing.
-----
Curiosity consumed me as I noticed a love letter resting beside each box, written on the finest stationery, thick, creamy paper with embossed edges, the kind reserved for declarations of the heart. It seemed I had a secret admirer.
With trembling hands, I opened the red gift box first. Inside was a set of stackable gold rings, 24‑karat gold, designed by none other than Cartier. They caught the light with a soft, deliberate glow, almost as if acknowledging my presence.
As I read the letter nestled within, the words “Never let me go” echoed in my mind, lingering like a whispered promise.
How could my secret admirer have known this was the exact style of rings I had always desired? A design I had admired quietly, secretly, without ever speaking it aloud.
-----
Eager to uncover more, I turned to the black gift box. Inside, I discovered three sterling silver chain bracelets, exuding pure luxury, magnificent creations by the famed American jeweler Harry Winston. Their cool shimmer contrasted beautifully with the warmth of the gold rings.
The love letter whispered, “You are the one for me.”
The words felt intimate, intentional, as though written by someone who had studied the architecture of my desires.
Astonishment washed over me.
How had this mysterious admirer known my longing for silver bracelets as well? These were not random choices, they were precise, personal, almost eerily accurate.
-----
I stood there, suspended between delight and disbelief, wondering who this person could possibly be.
Someone watching me?
Someone who knew me better than I knew myself?
Someone bold enough to leave treasures at my doorstep yet shy enough to remain unseen?
My heart raced as possibilities flickered through my mind like scenes from a film.
-----
Until I remembered.
The gifts, the letters, the admirer —, all figments of my imagination, conjured by the mischievous monsters that live inside my mind.
Creatures of fantasy who slip between reality and daydream, crafting stories so vivid they feel like truth.
They visit me often, these playful monsters, gifting me worlds that exist only in the quiet corners of my thoughts.
Yet even as the fantasy faded, a small part of me lingered in that imagined world, a place where desire materialized in ribbon‑wrapped boxes and affection arrived handwritten in ink.
Sometimes, the mind gifts us what reality withholds, offering comfort in the form of beautiful illusions. And for a moment, those illusions felt real enough to touch. They reminded me that imagination, when it wants to, can love me louder than reality ever has. And in that quiet truth, I found a tenderness that belonged only to me, a secret sanctuary of my own making.
