Bella and Edward- Breakup Rewritten
I hated the way New Moon was written, so I decided to re-write arguably the most important part! :D
Edward was practically stomping around the car. He grabbed my book bag, then flung it in the back seat. He stormed around again to grab my satchel (clearly forgetting it in his rush of anger), and threw it in the front passenger seat. His eyes were impassive and his jaw was set. Grave.
I tried speeding up my pace to catch up to him. He spoke first.
“Can we talk?” He demanded.
I tried brushing my hairs behind my ears, which was uncharitably being dislodged by the wind. The fog began to settle into a mist…floating like a jupiterian ring around my midsection. “Okay, let’s talk,” I agreed, smiling like a puppet doll.
Edward didn’t slow down. He stalked a few steps down the foot trail, his hands rigidly stuffed in his pockets. Even though it had just been raining and the skies were dark, I could still see the twilight behind our house, illuminating it like a halo.
Edward leaned against an oak tree.
He looked so picturesque- like a model posing in a some weird emo magazine.
His eyes were usually darker from a distance, but when the light shone on them (as they did now) they made him look inhuman. Predatory.
Was he looking at me or was he looking through me?
His body language was guarded. Like he didn’t want to offer me answers… or talk.
Which was funny, because he spoke first.
“Bella, we’re leaving,” he said, in a rushed, agitated tone.
I rubbed my fists against my thighs, trying to generate some warmth “Why now? Another year-“
“Bella, it’s time. How much longer could we stay in Forks, after all? Carlisle can barely pass for thirty, and he’s claiming thirty-three now. We’d have to start over soon regardless.”
I took a deep breath. And plastered on a smile again.Easy.
I didn’t particularly like change. I didn’t like Forks, for example…up until I’d got to know Edward. I could get use to anywhere really, as long as I had him. But my dad…?
“Edward,” I forced out. I shook my head, hoping that if he saw how silly it was to me, he would also drop the idea. “Can we at least wait until graduation…?”
My voice trailed off. Edward was staring at me with cold patience.
“O-oh.. wait? When you say we’ -“
“I mean myself and my family,” he interrupted, punctuating every word as if he was talking to a dummy.
I recoiled, my head shaking.
It didn’t make sense. None of it made sense. I didn’t want to look at Edward because I knew his face wouldn’t offer me answers. Instead I looked at the floor, trying to make sense of it all. The autumn leaves looked wobbly-blurry…
Clarity struck.
“I’ll come with you,” I said, with much resoluteness. I set my jaw so he could see I was just as determined as him.
“You can’t, Bella. Where we’re going...It’s not the right place for you.”
“Where you are is the right place for me.”
He shook his head. His face was contorted in either disgust or pain. I couldn’t tell.
“I’m no good for you, Bella.”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” I was mad now, so I dropped the pretence. I was tired of him, Charlie, Jacob and everyone telling me what was right for me. As if they knew better than my own self. “You are the best part of my life! You mean the world to me.”
This part was so true, that it hurt. I caught myself before my voice broke, and my throat bobbed as I swallowed. It hurt to feel this pathetic . My lips wobbled as I met his glare.
“My world is not for you,” he asserted grimly.
Colours. I was seeing colours. And stars. Surely this was an hallucination?
“What happened with Jasper—that was nothing, Edward! Nothing!”
“You are right, it was nothing,” he agreed. “Nothing compared to what it could’ve been, Bella. It could’ve been a bloodbath . You could’ve made us break the treaty. You could’ve got us exposed .”
I was fighting back tears, while simultaneously trying to fight back him. I was failing miserably at holding my own ground, and he could see it. Edward held out an arm protectively just in case I fell, but his eyes were still hard on mine.
Everything was slipping away… cold hands were replaced by numbness.
“You promised! In Phoenix, you promised that you would stay-“
“As long as that was what was best for you,” he corrected.
“This is about my soul isn’t it? If it’s about my soul than take it!” I said, my lips quivering. “Take it! Cause I don’t want it without you!”
Edward took a deep breath, his brows crossed as he fixated on the withering leaves underfoot. “Bella, I don’t want you to come with me.”
There was a pause as I racked my brain for his meaning. My heart was sinking to the bottom of my stomach. And it felt like I was on a lone paddling boat fighting raucous waves. Turning. Beating. I tried again, and failed to swallow the lump in my throat.
It seemed like hours before either of us spoke again.
“I don’t want you to come with me,” he repeated clearly. There was no softness. No mistaking what he meant.
“You… don’t… want… me..?” I repeated dumbly, my head bobbing with each word.
“No.” There was an edginess in his voice. This time I looked up. His eyes were bronze-steel, smouldering into mine.
“Well.. that,” I struggled. “That changes things.” I felt like air had been knocked out of my lungs. Saying it-accepting it- felt so foreign. So inappropriately formal. Like I was denying all that happened between us.
“Of course, I’ll always love you...in a way,” he added, his eyes glancing at me warily. “But what happened the other night made me realize that it’s time for a change. Because I’m...tired of pretending to be something I’m not, Bella. I am not human.”
“I don’t care,” I muttered distantly.
Edward didn’t want me .
“I’ve let this go on much too long, and I’m sorry for that.” Edward was still speaking but his voice was drowned out by the thunderous waves in my head.
Edward didn’t want me .
Edward didn’t want me .
Edward didn’t want me .
“I would like to ask one favor, though, if that’s not too much.”
“Anything,” I breathed vehemently, snapping out of it. Hoping he would call it bluff.
He must’ve seen the wish in my eyes as he winced pitifully.
“Don’t do anything reckless or stupid,” he said sternly. “Do you understand?”
My heart plummeted again. But I nodded.
“His eyes cooled, and the distance returned. “I’m thinking of Charlie, of course. He needs you. Take care of yourself—for him.”
I nodded again. “I will,” I whispered.
His eyes softened. “And I’ll make you a promise in return,” he said. “I promise that this will be the last time you’ll see me. I won’t come back. I won’t put you through anything like this again. You can go on with your life without any more interference from me. It will be as if I’d never existed.”
My knees buckled, and I lurched to grab his tailcoat. One last desperate attempt to make him stay.
He stepped back, but caught me in his arms. He pressed his lips on to my forehead and I shivered. I tried to find solace in his cold embrace.. his kiss..
“Don’t worry. You’re human—your memory is no more than a sieve. Time heals all wounds for your kind,” he whispered against my temple. I gripped him tighter.
“And your memories?” I enquired, for my own reassurance.
“Well”—he hesitated for a short second—“I won’t forget. But my kind...we’re very easily distracted.” He smiled; the smile was reassuring but it did not touch his eyes.
He took a step away from me. “That’s everything, I suppose. We won’t bother you again.” The plural caught my attention. That surprised me; I would have thought I was beyond noticing anything. Alice isn’t coming back, I realized.
I don’t know how he heard me—but he seemed to understand. He shook his head slowly, always watching my face.“ No. They’re all gone. I stayed behind to say goodbye.”
“Alice is gone?” My voice was blank with disbelief.
“She wanted to say goodbye, but I convinced her that a clean break would be better for you.”
The lump in my throat was now a boulder. I couldn’t breathe. Everything was a blur. It was too surreal. I shut my eyes and tried to regain my breath. I failed.
“Goodbye,” he said softly. “Take care of yourself Bella.”
“No!” My eyes snapped open, and I tried to lunge for him again. My body stumbled forward and a branch snapped. For a moment, I thought I would stumble into a large black hole that would swallow me.
Edward was gone.
Of course he was gone. Stupid, clumsy, ordinary Bella. Why would he stay?
I wandered around like a wounded lamb, trying to track his trail. But it was mid November, and nightfall fell quickly, dimming any hopes of finding his footprints anywhere.
It was pitch black when I gave up. I rested my head on a wet piece of bracken wood, curling myself into a ball. Edward could still be here. Watching. I slept intermittently, waking up to the faintest stirring, then drifting back into unconsciousness of sleep. I got use to my own damp hair sticking to my cheek, and the scratchy, hard oak mattress. Eventually, I stopped shivering. But the echoes in my head grew louder each time like closing sirens.
Edward.
Edward.
Edward.
I woke up to my phone buzzing. My brain still hadn’t recovered from the fog of last night. I was still half expecting Alice to be ringing me to walk with me to school.
But it was only my dad, ringing me again after 10 missed calls.
That is the end of Bella and Edward- Breakup Rewritten. Thanks for reading.
