Dangerous Temptations

Lila, an art curator, loves Malcolm, a demon collecting souls. As she recalls her past lives, she learns their bond is eternal. Torn between love and danger, Lila must choose: escape or embrace him.

Lila Moore stared at the reflection in the museum's polished glass doors, watching her face flicker in the twilight as the last visitors trickled out. Her life, her choices, her entire world had always been something of an illusion, so perfectly curated, just like the art she surrounded herself with. But unlike the delicate sculptures and timeless paintings, there was a crack running through her reality. A fracture she couldn't hide, no matter how hard she tried.
Malcolm stood beside her, his hand brushing against hers. The touch was soft, a gesture full of tenderness that contrasted the darkness lurking beneath his smile. The quiet hum of the empty gallery enveloped them, but there was an unspoken tension between them, a weight neither of them could ignore.
"You look beautiful tonight," Malcolm murmured, his voice deep, soothing. The compliment was sincere enough, but it didn't reach his eyes. She could see it, the flicker of something ancient and dangerous, hiding just beneath the surface.
Lila smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes either. "I always do when I'm with you."
She wasn't lying, but it wasn't the whole truth. The truth was that she wasn't sure when the beauty of their love had become tainted. Or if it ever truly was.
She was too aware of the fact that her lover, the man who claimed her heart, who held her through sleepless nights, whispered sweet nothings that carried the weight of centuries, wasn't the man he seemed. Not at all. Malcolm Cain wasn't a trauma surgeon like he told everyone. He wasn't a man at all. He was a demon. A monster with a dark past stretching across millennia. And Lila knew that better than anyone.
The truth about him didn't scare her. In fact, in some twisted way, it comforted her because she knew what to expect. She knew that Malcolm was dangerous. That he dragged lost souls to the underworld. That he was bound to a darker fate, a fate she couldn't escape, even if she tried.
But the part of her that still clung to hope, the part of her that believed in love despite everything refused to believe that this would be their end.
"Are you ready to leave?" Malcolm's voice brought her back to the present, his gaze softening when she turned to him.
Lila nodded, her heart thudding softly in her chest. She had become used to the feeling of uncertainty when it came to Malcolm. She loved him. There was no denying that, no matter how many times she questioned herself.
"Yeah," she said, her voice quieter now. She let him lead her out of the gallery and into the fading light of the evening.
The drive home was silent, save for the low hum of the radio, and Lila found herself gazing out of the window, watching the world pass by in blurry streaks of lights. Her mind wandered, as it often did. To her past. To the strange dreams, she had been having for weeks now. To the haunting feeling that something wasn't right, though she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
She had begun seeing flashes of faces in her dreams. Of places she'd never been but somehow knew intimately. Of a man with eyes like coal, staring at her with a familiar intensity that made her skin crawl. But it wasn't just the man that unsettled her. It was the whispering voice that echoed in her dreams, the voice that called her Eve.
Lila had chalked it all up to stress. It was a natural thing, right? To have bizarre dreams, especially when the pressure of her work, her family, and her relationship was mounting? That's what she told herself.
But then, there was Malcolm. The way he looked at her sometimes, like he was holding back something so immense that it could swallow her whole. The way he seemed to know things about her, things that no one could know. She wondered, for a fleeting moment, if he could hear her thoughts.
But she wasn't ready to ask. Not yet.
When they pulled up to her apartment, she turned to him, her eyes searching his face, trying to read the unreadable. There was a pause. Then, he smiled, the kind of smile that sent a chill crawling down her spine.
"I'll be here tomorrow," he said, reaching out to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
She smiled back, trying to ignore the unease that crept into her chest. "Of course you will."
She got out of the car, her feet barely touching the pavement before she felt the heavy weight of the secrets between them, pressing down like a thousand-pound stone on her heart.
Lila closed the door behind her with a soft click, her fingers lingering on the cool metal handle for just a moment longer than necessary. The apartment was quiet, save for the faint ticking of the clock on the wall, reminding her of the passing time. Time that felt both endless and too fleeting when it came to her relationship with Malcolm.
She kicked off her shoes and made her way to the small kitchen, still lost in thought. The dim light of the streetlamps filtered through the blinds, casting long shadows across the room. She poured herself a glass of wine, though she wasn't sure if she wanted it for the warmth it promised or for the numbness it might bring.
Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her reverie. It was a message from Sarah, her best friend.
Sarah Langston: How's everything going with Malcolm? Is everything okay?
Lila stared at the message for a long moment. She could feel the familiar tug of guilt in her chest. Sarah had been her rock for years, her confidante, the one person who always believed in the goodness of people. Sarah had no idea about Malcolm's true nature. No one did, not even Jacob. Lila could never bring herself to tell them the full truth. They wouldn't understand.
Lila Moore: Yeah, just... a long day. But we're good. You know how it is.
She hesitated before sending it, a sinking feeling pooling in her stomach as she typed the last words. She didn't want to lie to Sarah, but it was easier than facing the truth.
Seconds later, the reply pinged back.
Sarah Langston: You know I'm here if you need to talk. You've been quiet lately. Just take care of yourself, okay?
Lila let out a soft breath, her heart tightening. Sarah's concern was palpable, and yet Lila knew she couldn't be honest with her. Not about Malcolm. Not about the twisted history that kept them bound together. She set the phone down on the counter and rubbed her temples, trying to push away the ever-present ache that lingered in her chest. She had to stay focused. She had to keep pretending that everything was normal. That everything was fine.
But it wasn't.
Her phone buzzed again, but this time, it wasn't Sarah. The name on the screen sent a shiver of recognition down her spine. Malcolm Cain.
She picked up the phone with a steady hand, fighting the uneasy feeling that crept up her throat.
Malcolm Cain: Just wanted to say goodnight. I'll be thinking of you. I always am.
The words were sweet, but they carried a weight to them, a darkness she couldn't ignore. She knew exactly what Malcolm meant by "thinking of you." Every night, it was the same. Their love was a tangled thing, part devotion, part danger. He loved her, she was certain of that, but his love came with strings attached. Demonic strings that bound her to him in ways she couldn't explain.
Lila's finger hovered over the screen, but she didn't respond right away. Instead, she placed the phone on the kitchen counter, feeling the weight of the decision press down on her once again. There was always a choice, wasn't there? She could leave. She could walk away from Malcolm. From the darkness, he brought into her life.
But deep down, she knew she would never leave him. Not really. It wasn't just love that held her to him, it was something deeper. Something eternal.
Her gaze drifted to the window, where the city lights glittered like distant stars, indifferent to the turmoil that churned within her. A part of her, one that she could never silence wondered if this was the price she had to pay for the truth. A truth that she had known from the very beginning but could never fully face.
Malcolm was a demon. And she, Lila Moore, was bound to him in this life as she had been in every life before. It was a cycle. A pattern. A temptation that had always existed, and would continue to exist as long as the world turned. The knowledge should have terrified her. And yet, it didn't. Because even knowing who and what Malcolm was, Lila couldn't imagine her life without him.
The apartment felt suddenly smaller as if the walls were closing in around her, and she realized, with a heavy weight in her chest, that she had no idea how she would ever break free from the invisible chains that tied her to him.
And yet, she couldn't help but hope for something more. Lila let out a long, shaky breath and picked up her phone again, her fingers tapping out a quick message in reply to Malcolm.
Lila Moore: Sweet dreams. I'll be thinking of you too.
She pressed send, almost immediately regretting it, but by then it was too late.
Lila set the phone back on the counter, the small ding of an incoming message reverberating in her ears. She could feel her heart race a little faster, anticipating Malcolm's response, even though she knew it would be exactly what she expected. He was never far from her thoughts, even when they were miles apart. She closed her eyes for a moment, wishing for some clarity, some certainty, but all she found was an emptiness that seemed to stretch endlessly before her.
The soft hum of the refrigerator in the background seemed almost too loud in the stillness of the apartment, and Lila found herself pacing back and forth. Her mind refused to quiet. It was as if every corner of her existence had been consumed by him, by this bond that seemed to tether her to him now and forever.
Her phone buzzed again, but this time it wasn't just a simple reply from Malcolm. It was a voice message. She hesitated for a moment before unlocking the screen and pressing play.
The familiar sound of Malcolm's voice washed over her. Low, deep, and laced with an affection that never failed to make her heart skip.
"Lila," he began, and there was a strange tenderness in his tone. "I don't want you to worry about anything. You know that, right? I promise everything's going to be alright. We just have to hold on a little longer. Our time will come."
Lila closed her eyes, feeling the weight of his words settle in her chest. He spoke with such conviction, such certainty, but she knew better than to take his promises at face value. There was always something more behind his words, a hidden meaning she had learned to decipher over the years.
She took a deep breath, listening to the message again. She wasn't sure if she was trying to convince herself or remind herself that she could never fully escape him. His voice was both comfort and threat, like the calm before a storm. But in her heart, Lila knew the truth: there was no escaping the temptation, the darkness, that wrapped itself around her every time he looked at her with those eyes, those impossibly ancient, knowing eyes.
Lila had often wondered what would happen if she left him. If she tried to walk away, to break free from the weight of this eternal bond. Would he let her go, or would he pull her back? Did he even have the capacity to let her go, considering who and what he was?
She had never tried, not really. Because, in truth, she didn't want to. The pull of their love, whatever twisted form it took was too strong, too all-encompassing. Even knowing the truth, knowing what he did, Lila couldn't bring herself to walk away. He was her choice, her weakness. Her heart, her soul, he had them both, and she wasn't sure if she ever truly wanted to break free.
Her phone buzzed as she slipped into her sweatpants after a long, much-needed shower. It was a text message this time, from Jacob.
Jacob Moore: Just checking in. Are you good? Need me to come over?
Her stomach tightened. Jacob. Her older brother, the one person who always seemed to have her back, who looked out for her when no one else did. He didn't know about Malcolm. He didn't know what her life had become, what kind of darkness she was tangled in. And the thought of telling him... of telling anyone... seemed impossible.
Lila Moore: I'm fine. Just tired. Thanks for checking in. Love you.
The message was short, but it was all she could offer right now. She couldn't bring herself to explain anymore. Not yet. Not when every part of her was wrapped up in Malcolm, caught between the love she couldn't deny and the fear she couldn't ignore.
She set her phone down again, ran a hand through her hair, and let out a shaky breath. There had to be more to this. More to the connection between them. There had to be a way to understand it, to break the cycle that had haunted her for centuries, for lifetimes.
But how?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door.
Lila froze, her heart skipping a beat. She had been so lost in her thoughts, she hadn't heard anyone approach. The knock came again, more insistent this time.
She walked to the door, her pulse quickening. She didn't need to ask who it was. She already knew.
When she opened it, Malcolm stood there in the hallway, his hands tucked casually into his coat pockets, his dark eyes gleaming with an almost predatory light. He was dressed in a tailored suit, the kind he always wore when he wanted to play the part of a successful surgeon, his perfect mask, the one he wore so effortlessly.
But beneath that mask, she knew what he was. Who he was.
"Lila," Malcolm said softly, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I thought I might find you here, still awake. I wanted to see you."
He stepped into the apartment without waiting for her to respond, his presence filling the space with quiet tension.
Lila stood there for a moment, unsure of how to respond. There was a part of her, one that feared him, feared what he could do, that wanted to turn away, to tell him to leave. But there was another part, the part that had always been drawn to him, that wanted nothing more than to pull him closer.
"I'm fine," she said, her voice soft but steady, even as she fought the fluttering in her chest. "Just thinking."
He raised an eyebrow, his gaze piercing. "Thinking about me?"
Lila nodded, her heart sinking a little at the edge of his smirk. "Always."
Malcolm's smile deepened, his eyes darkening with something unreadable. He reached out, his hand brushing against hers, sending a jolt of heat through her. "Good," he murmured. "Because I don't want you to think about anything else."
Lila's breath caught in her throat as he stepped closer, his presence overwhelming her in a way that was both terrifying and intoxicating.
But even as she stood there, caught in the web of his touch, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was only ever one step away from losing herself completely.
And that thought, more than anything, terrified her.
