Decisions, Decisions, Decision,
A scifi monolouge.
Right, do I start now?
Ok.
Well, I suppose she must have been coming to the café for some time before I really noticed her...
Who? Jennie of course, before I first noticed Jennie.
She would come in to order something...
What?
No, she didn’t have a usual.
She would order something and then take the corner seat unless it was occupied.
Oh, well then she would get out a laptop and start doing whatever it was she was doing.
Well yes, I know what she was doing NOW, but I didn’t at that point.
Look, I'll tell you when I get to that point; who’s telling this story you or me?
Right right…
Sorry,
I'm sorry.
So what really made me notice her was when she started coming to the counter with a set of dice. I would ask her what she wanted, and she would roll a twenty-sided dice...
Yes twenty-sided, like you get in those silly adventure games. She would roll one of them for the drink then when I asked her if she wanted anything to eat she would flip a coin, After seeing which side up it landed, sometimes she would decline and other times get out a different dice and roll it to decide what to eat.
Well yes, there were clearly some things she didn’t like as her face would wrinkle up when she selected something she wasn't keen on but she would eat or drink them anyway.
This went on for a couple of weeks with her coming in every day and behaving in this strange way. Then one day I took her food and drink and looked over her shoulder. She seemed to be making small bets and stock trades. I started watching her more intensely and noticed that every now and then she would flip a coin. If it landed one way she would take a sip of her drink or bite of her food. If it landed the other she would continue with what she was doing for a while before repeating it. Eventually, I plucked up the courage to ask what she was doing and she looked up and looked at me like she had never noticed me before. Like I was a curious ape that had learnt to speak, and said
‘I’m trying to destroy the universe.’
Well I laughed, wouldn’t you? I assumed she was kidding and so for the next few weeks she would come in each day and I'd say how’s the destruction of the universe coming and she would look me in the eyes, smile and say ‘I’m getting there.’
And so it went on. But I started to find something about her was off, like her hair colour was never what I remembered it to be though...
Well...
Like... one day she came in and it struck me that she wasn’t African with an American accent. I don’t remember her ever being African with an American accent but I seemed surprised that she wasn’t African with an American accent. Almost like that was the way I remembered her but then when i thought back all the memories of how she was looking. Then another day I was surprised she wasn’t ginger with freckles. but again none of my memories had her ginger with freckles. And it got worse. Every day it was like I was talking to a different 'her' but all my memories said it was the same one.
I started to think I was going peculiar.
But it was only her.
Like... something around her wasn’t real.
I tried not to think about her but couldn’t. So one day I asked her how she was destroying the universe.
‘For every possibility,’ she said, ‘the alternatives are played out in other reality. Every time you make a decision at least one maybe hundreds of alternative universes are created.’ she said.
I just nodded, I had heard such things on the tele.
‘But where does the energy come from to make these universes?' She said 'It comes from ours. We are the ones making the decisions. And the more realities there are, the less energy this one has, the less gravity can hold it together. That is why the universe keeps expanding faster and faster. If enough realities get made, the universe will rip apart and it will be the end of everything.’
Part of me thought she was a nutter, but on another level there was a logic in what she was saying.
‘but why not try to stop it?' I said.
She laughed.
‘how are you going to stop 9 billion people from making decisions?’ she said. ‘better for everyone to get it over with quickly’.
She was still laughing as I put my hands around her throat...
I’m a mother myself, I had to do it for my kids. You do see that don’t you? I had to kill her...
To save the universe...
I had to...
I had to.
