Evocation
✓ 𝐄𝐕𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍; The act of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory, or image to the conscious mind. Laying in a frosty forest, with no recollection of where or who she is.
Chapter 1
"Lola! Come quick!" Marshel yells from afar.
Lola leaves her hiding place to run toward her brother's voice. Lola arrives at the scene and finds her brother standing over a body covered in a layer of soft, powdery snow.
"Jesus!" Lola covers her mouth and takes tiny steps toward the still body.
Marshel quickly grabs her hand, jerking her body backward, "No, don't touch it! What if they're dead? Then what?"
"But what if they're not dead and we can save them?" She questions as she looks into her brother's brown eyes. As he curses under his breath, he releases his sister to allow her to go investigate.
Lola creeps closer to the body and starts to brush the talc-like snow off.
A female face finally comes into view. Lola hastily pulls her brown glove off to place her hand on their pale neck to see if she is able to catch a pulse.
She gasps at the faint beating and pulls her hand away. "Marshel, the girl is alive! Come on and help me carry her back to the house."
Marshel throws a glance at his sister and then back at the girl covered in snow. He doesn't know her, and he doesn't owe her anything. So, why should he help her out?
"C'mon, what if this was me and someone left me out here to freeze to death? Please help me help her," Lola pleads with her brother.
Noting in his mind that she did have a point, he would kill the person who left his sister to die.
She is his family after all.
He walks toward his sister and looks at her with a small smile, "Well, aren't you going to help me?" She gives him a big smile and puts her right glove back on.
Taking hold of one end, they both begin to hoist the girl up with all their might. Then they steady her before placing her on Marshel's back. Alas, they start to make their way back home.
Chapter 2
Shivering from the cold, they finally reach their home.
"Alright, you put her down, and I'll go fetch us all some blankets and wood for the fire," Lola glances at her brother and the poor, almost frozen girl.
Marshel breathes a sigh of relief as he gently releases the girl from his back. Taking off his cloak-like coat and his light brown gloves, he sets them off to the side. He takes a good look at the girl sprawled out on his couch.
He gazes over the light blue-ish tint that began to form over parts of her face. "Must've been from being sprawled out in the snow for so long," he thought to himself.
Like him and his sister, she is blonde as well. But something catches his attention, not only the way she's dressed, but the thing that is around her neck.
She appears to have silk garments clinging to her, which you aren't able to find where they live. The thing around her neck is a gold chain tucked into her gown.
As he draws his hand closer to take a close look, an individual speaks up from behind him, "What are you doing?"
Marshel jumps at the voice and spins around to face his sister's peering eyes. "What are you doing?" She repeats herself.
He chuckles nervously, "Jeez, Lola, you scared me."
Lola takes one last accusing glance at her brother before sitting near the fireplace. "How cold is she?" Lola asks, placing the rough, thick wood in the fireplace.
He turns around to look at the blonde woman on the couch and places his hand on her face, feeling around for her temperature.
She feels like a melting ice cube.
Cold but not too cold.
"If we get her to the fire now, she'll probably wake up in a few hours," he tells Lola as he retracts his hand from the woman's face.
Lola nods, acknowledging his words, and turns her attention back to the fireplace.
Finally getting all the wood in the fireplace, she tries to get the flames going, but to no avail; the fire never starts.
Marshel chuckles to himself, and Lola turns around with her lips fixed in a pout, "Help me, please?" He nods his head yes and begins to get the fire started in no time.
"Alrighty then, let's get her over here," Lola gets up, tapping Marshel's shoulder.
Marshel hoists the woman up and into his arms, carrying her to the crackling fireplace. Lola retrieves some of the bigger pillows and the blankets she had picked up earlier.
Placing two of the plush pillows next to each other on the floor, Marshel gently places the woman's head between the pillows and grabs one of the blankets to cover her body with.
Lola gives her brother one pillow and the last one to herself. They grab the remaining blankets and cover themselves.
Lola is closest to the woman, so she brushes her hand upon her cheek, silently praying that she will wake up.
Chapter 3
Jocosa lazily rubs her eyes as she adjusts to being awake.
She slowly sits up, feeling the uncomfortable pain in her neck, and begins to rub it soothingly. She comes face-to-face with a slowly dying fire.
Jocosa begins to feel slightly alarmed at her surroundings as she begins to realize she doesn't have a slight clue where she is. She shifts her eyes away from the fireplace and onto the sleeping pair next to her.
So many questions begin to arise in her brain.
Where is she?
Who are they?
What happened?
She slowly stands to her knees as she tries to get a better look at her surroundings. She freezes when one of the people next to her begins moving around.
Locking eyes with the unknown person, Jocosa quickly jumps back and lets out a scream.
The person tries to reach out to her with their hand, but she crawls away, letting her back make contact with the wall.
"Please, I'm just trying-" The person begins to rush out, but their sentence is cut off as Jocosa quickly stands to her feet, running over to the table next to the couch.
She quickly grasps a weapon in her hand and points it toward the person. Allowing herself to catch her breath, she realizes it is a boy with blonde, wheat-like hair, and his tiny mustache and beard to match.
Noticing that he's several steps closer, she begins to panic as she lets out a shriek and swings the knife toward him, which he dodges and backs out of the way.
She directs her attention to the second person who is making their way hastily over to them.
It's a girl.
She matches him in hair color, and they almost have the same features, except she has a slightly wider nose.
"Where am I?" Jocosa yells at them as she starts to tremble from fear.
"You're at our house," the girl states calmly, "We found you outside lying in the cold snow."
The girl tries to approach Jocosa slowly, so she whips the weapon in her direction, "Don't come any closer!"
"Look, I know you're scared, but we're just trying to help you!" The girl relays to Jocosa slowly, trying not to freak her out again.
Jocosa nods, unsure of what she should do. Truthfully, she doesn't remember anything, so they could be telling the truth.
"Just put the knife down, and we can explain everything, okay?" The girl asks calmly, finally reaching Jocosa. The girl quickly grabs the knife from her clammy hold and tosses it behind herself. Then she softly pulls Jocosa back near the crackling fire to have a chance to finally explain what happened.
Chapter 4
"Lady Bloodworthe!" The knight comes bursting through Shelton's room.
Her attention is immediately directed to her distressed personal knight, George. "Yes? What is George?" She replies with a strained smile.
She always hates it when people interrupt her.
"It's about..." He glances around the room, specifically at her two ladies, "Your trip."
Her eyes widen as she immediately recalls what he is implying, "Out! The both of you!" Both of the ladies make a speedy escape from the room.
"She's not there anymore," George relays to her, carefully darting his eyes at the ground.
"What do you mean, she's not there?" Shelton questions him, rising from her seat.
"I mean her body isn't there anymore," he clarifies.
"Well, where could she have gone!? The poison...." Shelton trails off. "That damn physician!"
The knight jumps, a bit frightened by her booming voice.
The redhead begins to pace around the room mumbling, "What if she didn't die? W-What if she remembers? Or if someone saw and retrieved her body? That means I wouldn't be able to marry the prince!"
She suddenly stops her pacing to turn and faces George with a small, sinister smile, "You, my darling George, go check the area for me. And I'll go check up on that damn physician, he better not run anywhere or I'll have his head!"
Her smile quickly dissipates as she notices George idly standing, "Well? What are you waiting for? Go!" George quickly bows toward her and scurries out of the vast room.
She takes a seat on her bed, staring at the door that connects to her fiancé's, the prince. He would also spend the majority of his time with Jocosa, which made Shelton immediately jealous.
That girl was always taking time away from her to spend with her future husband. In Shelton's mind, it didn't matter if they were siblings or not; she always got in the way.
Maybe that was the reason why she got rid of her, or the simple fact that she never liked the princess from the start. It could be both, but again, the reason didn't matter to Shelton.
All that matters is that she is finally out of the way, and Shelton will do anything to make sure it stays that way.
Chapter 5
As it nears early afternoon, Jocosa, Lola, and Marshel are huddled together in a heap of blankets near a cozy fire.
"So in conclusion, you found me in a forest and brought me here?" Jocosa tries to make sure she has all of the facts that are being relayed to her.
Lola nods whilst rubbing Jocosa's back, to make sure she is comfortable as all of them sit around the fire.
"Then you tried to attack us with my hunting knife," Marshel adds jokingly.
Jocosa immediately bows slightly toward Marshel, "I'm so sorry! Please try to understand that I was frightened and didn't know where I was!"
He laughs it off, gently patting her shoulder, "I understand, there's nothing to apologize for. I was only joking."
Lola slightly sits up and speaks with a gentle tone, "Do you perhaps know what happened?"
Jocosa takes a minute to respond, trying to recall something, but ultimately comes up with nothing. "I don't remember anything. I-I can't recall anything. All I can seem to remember is my name, and that's about it."
Lola and Marshel both share a look.
Marshel plasters a fake smile on his face and grabs Lola's arm forcefully, "Please excuse me and my sister for a second."
Lola stumbles over the blankets and sends a small smile toward Jocosa as she goes along with her brother.
"I knew we should've left her in that forest!" Marshel whispers roughly. Lola finds her face holding an appalled look before she slaps Marshel, "How dare you."
"You know I'm telling the truth," Marshel whispers as he rubs his cheek, "We don't know where she's from or who brought her here. I don't want that kind of trouble if you do have at it." And with that, he grabs his brown coat and heads off into the winter woods.
Chapter 6
Trudging through the frigid forest by himself, George is trying to find the princess.
Lady Bloodworthe has given him the task to go look around the area; he couldn't have refused.
So here George is, rummaging around the white-blanketed forest, trying to find the girl.
He finds that as his search goes on and on, there isn't that much to go off of anyway. Even if she had made footprints, the descending snow would have covered them anyway.
The frustrated George is about to call it quits when he hears a faint female voice. Not wanting to go back to Lady Bloodworthe empty-handed, he begins to follow the voice.
He peers out at the light gray cloud of smoke, which he is positive will lead him in the right direction. So he hurries his footsteps to arrive in front of a small wooden lodge. He spots a woman standing in front of the house.
Ducking behind a tree, he watches as the cloaked woman knocks softly on the door, calling for someone. The door finally unlocks, revealing a pretty woman with flaxen hair. "Bliss, you've arrived!" The blonde woman speaks, clapping her hands excitedly.
They hug, and the yellowy blonde rushes her inside the house. George emerges from behind the piece of nature and creeps closer to the wooden structure.
Peeking through the windows, another woman comes into his view. She gets up and slowly walks up to the blonde woman he remembers from outside just a couple of seconds ago.
George gasps as he recognizes her.
It is the princess.
Internally jumping for joy, George gets too distracted to notice a figure behind him.
"Who are you and what are you doing near my house?" The unidentified person booms.
George turns around and stumbles backward because of how close the person is.
It is a blonde, tall man; he is probably family to the other blonde inside. "I wasn't doing anything," George responds, stumbling and attempting to get on his feet.
"You were peeking in the window! I saw you!" The man shouts at him, getting closer with each step.
"No, I wasn't!" George shouts back, getting defensive.
The door suddenly swings open with two girls running out into the cold to join them. "Marshel, what's going on!" The blonde woman yells at the man.
"He was peeking into the windows; he's probably some pervert!" He exclaims.
"No, I'm not! I-I was just passing by!" George yells as his nose scrunches up, irritated with the name that was just spat at him. Everyone whirls their head in the direction of the door upon hearing fresh footsteps on the snow.
"D-Do I know you?" Jocosa asks George, squinting her eyes. She feels like she knows him from somewhere.
George freezes for more than one reason.
The fact that she seemingly doesn't recognize him, and that she has seen him.
George suddenly feels the need to hurry back to the castle, but he needs to put a pin in this situation.
"I'm sorry, have a good day," and with that, George is on his way to leave the freezing forest and makes his way to the royal castle, leaving the people behind him, currently confused.
Chapter 7
Stunned by the sudden departure of the weird man, everyone stands still for a moment just staring at each other.
Breaking the still and quiet moment, Lola grabs Jocosa's hand, leading her inside. Bliss follows Lola's trail, and Marshel follows slowly after, throwing a glare in the man's direction of disappearance.
Lola leads Jocosa over to the couch and sits her down gently before making her way toward her blond brother.
"Where were you!" Lola looks him up and down in fierce anger, "Why did you just disappear like that?"
Marshel's hand makes its way towards the back of his chilly neck, rubbing it as his eyes settle on everything but his sister, "I just went for a walk, I needed to clear my head. That's it."
Lola scoffs in utter disbelief, "So you have nothing else to say?"
Marshel continues to stare in the other direction in silence. Lola rolls her eyes and takes hold of Marshel's arm forcefully and leads him toward the door, "If you have nothing else to say, then exit, please."
Marshel looks down at his sister's weighty expression. He sighs and gently unhooks her fingers from around his arm.
He clasps his hands in between both of them, "Please, I'm sorry! Understand, we don't know who she is or where she came from. And we already have something to deal with while mother and father work. I didn't want us in another situation."
Lola understands where he is coming from; he just has the wrong approach. "I'll tell you what, you make us a meal and I'll accept your apology."
Marshel grins at his sister, "Of course, now do you forgive me?"
She smiles widely and wraps her arms around him as he does the same, "Of course I forgive you, but do it again and I swear I'll cut you." Marshel laughs at his sister's threat and breaks the hug.
"Now go make us some food!" Lola demands pushing Marshel in the direction of their small kitchen. Marshel groans and makes his way to the kitchen to start fixing a meal for the four of them.
Lola strolls over to the living room to see Jocosa sprawled out on the couch sleeping peacefully, while Bliss is playing with her long, hazelnut curly hair.
Sensing someone is near, Bliss turns around to face the blonde-haired woman. "So do you want to tell me now? You know," Bliss points to the resting girl, "About her."
Chapter 8
Marching in the cold, to the front of the castle, the guards quickly recognize George and lift the rusty gate to let the man in.
Quickly walking in on the cold marble floor, George makes sure to put haste in his steps to meet Lady Bloodworthe. He hopes that she will be proud of him for finding out much more than they had anticipated.
Reaching her chambers, he quickly knocks on the doors, only to not get a response.
Needing to tell her the urgent news of his findings, he twists the doorknob and opens the creaking door. Stepping into the room, he is prepared to be faced with an irate redhead, but instead, he is faced with an empty room.
He sighs, turning on his heel and letting his head hang in disappointment as he closes the door the way it was before he had entered her chambers.
As he walks down the halls, he spots the maids in a huddle speaking in a hushed but rushed manner.
George halts in his steps; he knows he needs to find Lady Bloodworthe.
It is known that if you need to know anything, ask the maids.
Rolling back his shoulders before taking a heavy breath in, he approaches the flock of women.
One of the many lifts their head, alarmed at the incoming footsteps. Her eyes widen at the approaching George, and she quickly tries to hush the other maids who surround her.
"Amelia," George finally speaks, standing in front of the brunette maid, "What's going on?"
She clears her throat and waves the other maids away, "Nothing important."
He snickers in a domineering way and approaches her closer, "I'll ask again, what's going on?"
She quickly swallows and whispers, "I don't have to tell you."
He rolls his eyes and steps back a bit, tilting his head, "Just like I don't have to tell any of the royals how you're fucking Francis?" She gasps as her face reveals shock, as George smirks, knowing she knows she will have to tell him now.
"Well, shouting was heard at the physician's quarters," Amelia looks around to see if anyone is around, "And it was said that Lady Bloodworthe traveled that way not too long ago."
Chapter 9
George dashes through the majestic halls of the castle, Amelia's words replaying in his head.
Rushing down the steps carefully, the yelling increases from down the hall.
He finally reaches his long-awaited destination to see that Lady Bloodworthe is raising her hand to hit the physician.
"You sabotaged me, and you know it!" Lady Bloodworthe screams in pure anger, and her hand comes swooping down but halts in midair.
Stunned, Lady Bloodworthe turns to see George with a hold on her wrist.
Quickly, she yanks her arm back from his possession. "Why on earth would you grab me or touch me without my permission!" She yells in his face.
The physician flinches along with George at the lady's loud, booming voice. " I didn't want things to escalate further. You can talk to Physician Reginald without yelling, and my lady, there are people around," George whispers close to her ear.
Lady Bloodworthe takes a moment to calm herself, though she is about to unleash her fury on her knight, who dared to stop her. Even more, to tell her what to do.
It kind of makes her smile to know how much George has grown. However, he may need a reminder as to who he is talking to.
Taking a deep breath, Shelton turns around to face the cowardly Reginald. "So, would you care to fucking explain why she's not freaking dead?"
Reginald stutters on his words, trying to find an excuse as to why she is still amongst the living. "U-Uh, I must've gotten the medicines mixed up. I apologize, Lady Bloodworthe."
But Reginald isn't sorry, not in the slightest bit. He understands what he did and that it was on purpose. He hopes the little miss will gain her memories soon and come back to take down this ferocious, vile woman.
Shelton cackles loudly, "You apologize?! Your apologies won't fix your fucking mistake. I needed her dead, and she's still walking around because of you!"
George taps Shelton's cloth-covered shoulder, to which she whips her head around with a scowl. "What is with you and interrupting me today!"
"I-I found her," George whispers.
Both Reginald's and Shelton's eyes grow big in his direction.
Everything and everyone in the room lay still for a moment, but the silence is broken by the woman with her sinister laugh.
"Well, lucky for you boys, I got a plan."
Chapter 10
It is the final meal of the day for the three royals in the dining room.
Usually, they would be chatting about their day and work with other kingdoms and how the villages are managing. But these past few days have broken their happy cycle.
With the royal daughter missing, it is as if a piece of their lives has been snatched away from them.
The royal king and queen are no longer able to pester their daughter with their worries about how her and Prince Robert's relationship is faring along.
For the royal son, Lorencio, his only sibling, the one with whom he shares his many secrets, is now gone.
Here one day, gone the very next.
Lorencio and her chatted the night before she was whisked away by some unknown force. He told her that his and Shelton's walls were finally coming down between one another. She was happy for them; she loved seeing the joyous look on her brother's face when he thought they might be able to love one another. So that their arranged marriage won't go to waste.
But now those walls went right back up, always either working or wallowing in the loss of his sister in the walls of his bedroom.
As for the current moment, silverware scraping plates and chewing fill the room.
"So, where's your fiancé, son?" Royal Queen, Cateline, asks her son whilst sipping dark maroon-colored wine.
"Haven't caught a glimpse of her since this morning," Lorencio replies to his blonde mother, placing his fork down and making a clanking sound on his plate.
Silence fills the vast room again before the dining doors suddenly burst open, and in comes a certain redhead.
"King Alloys, Queen Cateline, Lorencio," she begins, taking a seat at the large table, "I'm so sorry for arriving late. I had some business to attend to."
Queen Cateline internally rolls her eyes but keeps a tight, fake smile accepting her apology, "Dear, it's alright, as long as you're here now."
The King agrees along with his wife, "Yes, dear, you're here now. Start eating before it becomes too cold for you." Shelton sends him a small smile before starting to deliver food to her mouth.
Lorencio bites his lip; he doesn't like the fact that none of them care to bring up his missing sister. He feels as if they are too scared to bring the matter up. Well, he isn't, and he wants her back.
Lorencio practically throws his hands on the table, "Are we not going to do anything!? Your daughter is missing, my sister, and we've just been doing nothing and sitting here! I won't have it! We need to act fast and find her before something happens to her!"
Chapter 11
In the living room, surrounded by blankets and a warm fire, Lola finishes relaying her side of the tale to the eager Bliss, who gasps, staring at the woman on the soft couch.
"So she doesn't know where she's from, and she was in a forest?" Bliss asks, trying to sum up the peculiar story as best she can. Lola nods and looks down, playing with her pale-ish fingers.
"It's a dreadful situation, really, not being able to remember anyone or where you came from," Bliss pouts.
Little do they know they are speaking a little too loudly for the sleeping beauty on the couch, who has just risen from her sleep.
Jocosa is caught between emotions right now, having to wake up to what's messing with her.
Are they only taking care of her just because they pity her?
Or do they want to help her as they told her earlier?
A frustrated tear rolls down her cheek as she rises from the couch, which catches the girl's attention.
"Hey, where are you going?" She asks, getting up from her cozy spot.
Jocosa rolls her eyes as she turns around, putting on her shoes. Lola raises an eyebrow and tries to pat Jocosa's shoulder to catch her attention, but her hand is quickly slapped away.
Lola retracts her hand in surprise at the hostile behavior, "What's going on?"
Jocosa faces the blonde woman with her hands balled to her sides, "Why do you want to know? Want to pity me some more?"
Lola chuckles in confusion, "What are you talking about?"
"I heard you! You're just pitying me! You told me you wanted to help me, and I-I believed you! If you are doing this out of pity, then forget it! I don't want your help!" Jocosa yells out of frustration, storming out of the wooden structure.
Lola gasps and rushes outside after the runaway woman, "Wait, come back!" Jocosa never turns back at her request and keeps on running into the white forest.
Lola runs back inside, gathering her winter necessities, trying to rush after her, but Marshel pulls her back before she can leave for the cold, "Where are you going?"
"Where!? To go get her back! She's all alone in a forest in the middle of freaking winter with nothing to cover her, and who knows who could be out there? That man from yesterday could be out there!" Lola yells, rushing after her.
She can't be more right. Who is out there?
Chapter 12
George keeps Shelton's orders close to him as he trudges through the forest on his usual stallion, May.
"It'll be alright, girl," he pats her hazel mane, trying to console the great animal.
More like he is trying to console himself.
It is getting dark, and quite honestly, George isn't too fond of the dimly lit environment he is in. But as always, he needs to be there for Lady Bloodworthe.
People might look at George and recognize him as Lady Bloodworthe's strong personal knight, but their relationship is more than what meets those lookers' eyes. George owes Lady Bloodworthe almost everything he has.
So, whatever she asks of him, he will do it with no questions asked. Nothing he will do for her will ever mount up to what she has done for him in his innocent-like eyes.
He breathes out a heavy sigh, slipping off the horse. "Get a quick rest," he tells the stallion, gently patting its mane.
George surveys the area, glancing at the ashy area around him. He sees that same old grey, ugly smoke from the last time he was wandering in this area.
George feels bad for the black stallion and himself, so he grabs the reins and pulls the horse along with him. While trudging through the snow, his mind chooses to think about the princess he is on the prowl for.
He doesn't hate her, nor does he like her; he doesn't think about her a lot unless his lady brings her up. Every time they crossed paths, the same regular greeting everyone gave him out of respect or status was tossed his way.
But his lady doesn't like her at all. She always thinks the blonde girl is in her way or out for her relationship with the prince.
So with his lady, he is taught to think she is a threat, and other slurs Shelton spoke about her. Others might think he's cruel, but he's just doing what he is ordered to do.
Trudging closer to his long-awaited destination, further away to the right, he hears muffled noises.
He stops walking as he does what he knows he shouldn't do.
He follows the noises.
Creeping on the white littered ground, George ties his horse close but far enough not to make unnecessary noise. Kissing the midnight stallion on the forehead, he travels to where the sound is coming from.
George lets out a low gasp. He has found the princess.
She is sniffling and cuddling up near a tree; she is vulnerable. It is the perfect moment to try to bring her back to his lady.
All is going right for George until he slips up and steps on a broken branch, which lets the blonde girl know someone is near.
Jocosa looks up and locks eyes with George.
She is about to speak, but is interrupted as George begins dashing straight toward her.
Chapter 13
Jocosa's tears are left behind, frozen by the wintry winds as her feet carry her until she collapses tiredly.
Curling up near a close hollow, dark tree covered in the fallen snow, Jocosa finally has a moment to catch up on everything.
It is almost unnerving for her not to be able to remember where she was before she was found lying in the plushy snow.
Does she have a family back wherever, struck with worry, waiting for her, or is she all alone like when she was found?
She desperately grasps at her hair, trying to remember something. Something, anything to help.
But nothing.
Nothing.
Nothing comes to her.
Letting her near-frozen fists repeatedly strike the tree near her, she finally lets her frustrated cries out to be heard by anyone near. She curls into a ball and leans on the tree for support as she wallows in self-pity.
Hearing a rather random noise, Jocosa looks up and scans the vast white area around her. Soon, she dismisses the thought, thinking she is being paranoid. Reasoning with the fact that she is in the forest and there are other animals around her.
Letting her thoughts run back on their original track, she feels as if she is that one duck that got lost from its mother and siblings and is left all alone. She has nowhere to go except to the nice girl's house, but it seems as if her brother isn't that fond of her staying.
He has vocalized it before, so it only makes her lingering doubts concrete and makes her feel like an unwanted burden. All these feelings feel as if someone is choking her from the inside, as her brain and heart begin to hurt from all these emotions and thinking.
All she can do is helplessly cuddle herself against the hollow, frosted wood.
Once again, she hears a noise, but this time it is more distinctive, like a snapping twig. She glances up only to lock eyes with the blonde stranger from earlier on.
Feeling confused, her mouth gapes open to question him, but he suddenly charges straight for her.
Chapter 14
The contact with her boots and the snow makes harsh crunching sounds as her eyes frantically search her cold surroundings.
Lola knows the forest well, no matter the time or season, that isn't the problem, though.
She has lost... hell, she doesn't even know the woman's name! All Lola knows is that she had suddenly run out after overhearing her and Bliss's conversation.
Her feet come to a halt as she gulps, feeling her dry throat.
She begins to question her persistence. Why is she hell-bent on helping the unknown woman?
Again, she doesn't even know her name or why she was sprawled out in the snow.
What if Marshel is right, for once in his life? What if she brings more trouble than their cups can handle and they begin to overflow?
She thinks for a moment and realizes she knows exactly what her mother would tell her. Her eyes flutter close, exhaling deeply, and practically feeling her mother's whisper, "Take a step back and trust yourself." Lola smiles and feels a sense of clarity.
She is desperate to help and aware that she has no right to be involved. Despite this, she is now sprinting ahead, filled with manic determination.
It is decided that Lola will stay by her side and assist her as much as she can until she is able to stand firmly on her own.
Dashing through the white forest, she tries to keep her ears open for any noise.
But she can only run so much for such a distance. The farther she gets, the more she strays from her home.
She suddenly stops on the path she is leading herself down, as she hears a scream.
With haste, she races as the noises become louder. She knows she is headed in the right direction as she passes an idle horse.
"Get off of me!" She sees the woman scream from under the same man Marshel had accused of being a pervert. Why is he here once again?
Without a second thought, she yelps as she throws herself toward the man, launching them to the side as the woman gasps for the wintry air.
Lola scrambles over to the woman's side, frantically placing her hands on her shriveled body, "A-Are you okay?"
She doesn't get an answer as she feels the weight of the man on top of her.
His soft, yet scarred hands grip her tanned skin as her eyes go wide at the pressure.
She desperately attempts to pry his hands off while she can feel the tears pricking the corners of her eyes as she feels her breathing start to shorten.
That's when she suddenly remembers that her hunting knife is still inside her pocket. She tries discreetly reaching for it as her vision starts to blur.
Is this it for her?
"Ah!" The woman swings the rock toward the man's head and pushes him off of Lola.
Lola begins to violently hack as she forces herself up and notices the uneven pattern of breath the woman is exhaling.
"I swear to god, look for her again and I'll bury you in these fucking woods! Fuck!" She threatens him as she gets her hoarse voice back and clasps the woman's wrist to flee as fast as they can.
Lola keeps eyeing behind her to see if the man somehow gained speed. With luck, they are in the clear.
The hyperventilating beside her doesn't go unnoticed, as Lola grasps her flushed face, "What's wrong?"
She gives no answer as she falls limp into Lola's exhausted arms.
Chapter 15
The unconscious female slips down Lola's back with every footprint she makes in the dirty snow.
Her house is coming into view; she can almost make out the wooden engravings. She tries to keep her determination intact by focusing elsewhere instead of the frosty air wrapping its arms around her stiff body.
Her determination doesn't quite translate to her wobbling bones as she approaches the cabin. Although she collapses to the floor covered in bottomless snow, Lola makes sure the woman is well-supported before her inevitable tumble.
"Marshel!" She screeches with the icy winds gripping her throat.
Her voice carries through the air to her brother's ears, as he jumps with worry, rushing to his sister's aid.
Mimicking a tickle, he drags his hands along her arms before settling them on her shuddering shoulders.
"Are you alright!?" He yells straight in her face; he can't help it, his anxious mind is busy calculating the worst outcome.
Her friend's bustling hair moves in a blur as she appears by Lola's side, matching the worrisome expression Marshel wore.
"I'm fine," a tired tear trickles down her flushed face, "Marshel, please help her up, and Lola, please help me, I'm so tired."
Marshel wants no time to be wasted as he wants his sister safe. Succumbing to her stubbornness, he helps the woman off the fluffy ice and toward the warmth. Bliss provides her arms as support to help her shaky friend from the air's cold grip.
Marshel gently lays the woman's body on the couch before rushing to get her a cool rag.
Lola's bones stick to the chair the moment her eyes drift to Bliss, who is fetching her a glass of water.
Bliss carefully hands Lola the cup with sturdy hands before settling in front of her, "What happened out there? Y-You don't have to speak if you find it difficult."
Lola holds her finger out as she gulps the water down her aching throat.
She sets the glass down before calling over her brother to listen in as well.
"I was running for what seemed like hours before I heard her. So I ran toward the noise, and I found her and that man. So we fought him off before running, and then she fell out, so I carried her here. Then, well, you know the rest," Lola relays the past events to the two.
Marshel's thick brows furrow as new thoughts begin to form.
"It can't be a coincidence that twice in a row that pervert appeared here. Last time she thought she recognized the man, this time he happens to be in the forest when she runs out," he thinks aloud. He makes sure to make a mental note to ask the woman later.
But he can't shake the uneasiness; his family could be at stake because of her. He sighs as he decides for himself that it wouldn't hurt to play along with the situation.
For now, at least.
"I'll go finish up the stew, you go freshen up her rag," he straightens his legs before placing his hand upon his younger siblings' blonde locks, "I'm glad you're safe."
Lola tilts her head up to glance at the rare vulnerability her brother shares with her. She nods her head with a wide smile, "Glad to be back home."
Marshel walks off to tend to the food as Bliss joins Lola to give the unconscious woman a refreshing rag.
Lola carefully takes the bucket of water, placing it next to her as she settles on her knees in front of the couch. She takes the rag off her forehead before dipping it in the still water next to her. Lola wrings it out a bit before placing it on her forehead.
She stares down at her unconscious expression before squinting her eyes at what seems to be fluttering eyelids.
Chapter 16
Lola stares intensely at the woman's face as her eyelids peel back to reveal her hazy pupils.
The woman appears to be very startled as her eyes frantically search her surroundings for a clear answer to her whereabouts. Lola peers at the stressed tears running down her face as her sobs escape her.
"Are you okay?" Lola worriedly begs the woman for some conversation, which isn't reciprocated as her focus is elsewhere. Their eyes slowly begin to connect as Lola can finally make out more of her flushed face.
"I-Is the man g-gone?" She hiccups trying to pull herself together, but the fear begins to consume her shaky movements. The woman's hands feel their way around her neck, "He... I-I couldn't breathe, I thought he was going to kill me."
The only thing Lola can think to do is quite simple: to calm her frantic nerves.
Hug her.
Lola leaps to spread her arms around the shaky figure, laying her face on her clothed shoulder, "He's gone, it's going to be alright." The woman allows her arms to dangle in the awkwardness of the one-sided action before embracing the comfort offered.
The warmth of the duo's arms begins to separate after a while as Lola separates herself from the woman. She places her hands on the woman's pale face, wiping away the tears she has shed.
"Do you want to tell us what happened? If you're unable to, you can rest right here, and we'll bring you some supper," Lola's hands massage the woman's head to soothe her. But the woman nods, signaling that she can do so, sitting up as she sniffles.
"Um... I was running until I found a place to sit. If it wasn't for the noise distracting me from my thoughts, then he probably would've gotten me. I tried fighting him off the best I could until you got there. Then, as we were running away, I just couldn't take it anymore," she clutches the fabric of her dress as she can feel the faucet of her eyes begin to let her tears leak through.
The woman looks up at Lola with a tear-stained smile, "If you hadn't gotten there in time... Who knows what he would've done to me? T-Thank you, I don't know why you continue to help me, but thank you."
Lola beams a peaceful smile as she reaches for her hand, "I vow to you now, to help you until your memories are restored or until you are able to support yourself. And I promise this isn't from a place of pity."
The woman chuckles poorly as she swipes away at the ticklish tears, "I have to ask, why are you fighting for me so much, you know nothing about me?"
"I've been asking that very question," Marshel sighs loudly, interrupting their heart-to-heart.
Lola serves him a glare as she launches the rag toward his face before turning to smile in the woman's direction. He quickly ducks, and the rag sails past his head, barely missing his nose.
"Don't mind that asshole," she yells the last bit in his general direction as he fades away to the kitchen.
Lola shrugs her tired shoulders with a grin, "I guess... I just can't help myself."
A blanket of silence covers the room, not with uneasiness, but with understanding. Each of them feels comfortable finally being able to take a breath. Not until Marshel lifts the blanket with an announcement and a helping hand for the woman, "I've finished supper, so come along and eat."
She stares at Marshel and his outstretched hand as he gestures for her to take it.
She is overwhelmed by his generosity, and even with the murky air surrounding them, he still offers her a helping hand.
The woman knows not everything between them has been resolved, so she accepts the kindness as she leaves the couch.
Chapter 17
Marshel guides the snowy blonde to the small, wooden table where they gather to eat.
Normally, it would be just him and his sister, or their parents would join in as well. But alas, it is just the four of them tonight.
He passes bowls full of steaming stew, letting their munches fill the air. It feels good for everyone to have a warm meal, as the drama has drained their energy levels.
The mealtime passes, and everyone thanks Marshel as he comes around to pick up their empty bowls. As he places them elsewhere, he reminds himself to ask the woman if she remembers anything about that pervert.
Settling back down in his creaky toffee-colored chair, Marshel settles his hands in front of him on the table, setting his sights on the woman. "Hey, not to disturb the atmosphere, but I have a question. Do you recall anything about the man or anything he might've said to you?"
The blonde sinks into her chair as she tries to recall the previous stressful event. It isn't long before she pops up, "Actually, there is something. It was something he said before she had arrived and saved me from his rough hands."
"If you feel uncomfortable in any way, you don't have to speak," Lola tries comforting her by placing a hand on her shoulder.
"No, it's fine, I remember something important," she nods toward the nice woman, removing the hand from her shoulder. "Whilst he was on top of me, he'd mentioned someone named Bloodworthe and... Jocosa. But the important thing is, it was like he was addressing me as Jocosa, saying that I should've stayed gone."
Marshel hums deeply as he ponders her reply. "It's safe to assume that you both are connected. Neither I nor Lola have seen him once, but he only showed up when you arrived. Those names sound familiar, but I just can't put my finger on it. But if he said 'Jocosa' more than once... Then we might finally have a name for you."
The frizzy-haired female's gaze drifts between the two as their dialogue continues, before having a chance to butt in. "I have an idea for all of us. Why don't we formally introduce ourselves?"
Lola gives her a smile as she agrees with the sudden suggestion, "I agree, I'll go first! My name is Lola Wilmot, his sister."
Picking up on his cue, Marshel begins introducing himself, "My name is Marshel Wilmot, I'm that stubborn brat's only brother. Whilst our parents are out, I'm usually the one in charge."
"And I'm Lola's best friend! My name is Bliss Ecclestone, and I have one sister, who is with my parents at the moment," Bliss excitedly introduces herself.
"I-I suppose you can call me Jocosa," the last female gives a weak and quick smile toward the group.
Marshel clears his throat before standing, "Well then, now we're all properly acquainted with Jocosa, why don't we head down to the market in a couple of days? We can purchase extra food and some new clothing for the miss. And we have yet to touch the money Mum and Father left us."
"Wonderful idea! And to get ready for the night, you start the fire again and get blankets while I fetch Jocosa a gown for bed." Lola stands next to Jocosa, offering a hand so she can lead her to the back.
Marshel nods as they all separate, with the girls heading toward Lola's room.
Lola reaches through her drawers to pull out a long chalky white gown with a few stains here and there. She ushers Jocosa toward the bathroom to change as she and Bliss change elsewhere.
Jocosa undresses as she turns to smooth out the piece of clothing that reaches a little below her snowy kneecaps. Dragging her hands down her face, she lets out a long sigh as her mind replays the past events.
The man stains her thoughts, as she's afraid of what he will do if he catches her again. But her fears dissipate as Lola calls for her in the living room. Jocosa inhales deeply before striding back to everybody.
Lola beckons her over so she can slide under the fur blanket and get comfortable with the warmth. Bliss follows to lie on the outside as Lola's body takes the space near Jocosa's.
She begins to pet and stroke Jocosa's hair to help soothe her thoughts for slumber. Jocosa glances upwardly at the woman, surprisedly, yet comforted by her movements.
They each begin to lie peacefully as the fire roars through the night.
Chapter 18
The sun's rays reached the little boy in dirtied clothes, clutching the piece of day-old bread between his thin fingers.
It was more heated today than the regular days he'd spend scavenging for food or a temporary place to stay.
Today, he spent the day thieving from the baker, and now his knees are tucked into his chest as he chomps on the crumbly bread.
His posture straightened as he heard horses in the distance. It wasn't common to get visitors in this area. The knights and riders huddled around something important, or rather someone.
His eyes settled on the curly redhead with a dress as dark as the midnight skies. The dark horse with white fur around its hooves stepped through the dirt path. The woman rode with her head high, except when she turned to look into his unfortunate eyes.
She ordered her men to stop as she smirked in his direction before gently removing herself from her horse.
The boy gulped nervously. She looked like she belonged to riches beyond his poor imagination.
She approached him slowly to make sure her dress remained unstained.
Her figure loomed over him as he worriedly fidgeted, worried if his staring had set off her temper. Oh, how he hoped to get through the day; his regular routine was nothing to brag about, but he was content.
"Boy, what are you doing?" The simple question cleared his fussy thoughts.
"Excuse me?"
"I asked what are you doing along the road all by your lonesome?" She tilted her head, crossing her arms.
"I am eating this bread, that's all... This is all I have," his head drooped down.
"Have you any family, boy?"
"No ma'am, it's just me."
She stepped a bit closer before crouching to meet him at eye level, "I'm in a particularly good mood this afternoon, and seeing as you have no reason to refuse, I'm going to make you an offer, boy. Why don't you come with me and serve me? In return, I give you riches and all the food that your poor stomach desires?" She poked his skinny belly as his eyes widened.
"But why me?" The words curiously left his mouth.
"As I said, I'm in a good mood," she shrugged before standing on her feet and extending her hand, "Now if you choose to accept, take my hand, we're a bit off schedule."
His eyes flickered between the town he spent his life scavenging in and the seemingly generous lady before him.
His bread was forgotten and tossed as he grasped onto her hand. She smiled widely, leading him back to her steed. She helps him steady the black beauty before balancing herself.
"Now what is your name, boy?"
"The name is George, ma'am."
The man shudders from the layer of snow cuddling him from atop. His head pounds loudly as he sits upright, looking at the darkening skies.
The memories of his failed capture flood back as he grits his teeth.
How could he fail?
How could he disappoint her?
He knows her temper and knows she wouldn't understand or forgive his mistake so easily.
His fist pounds the snowy ground beneath him.
He forgot one thing: what of his horse?
His whistles fill the forest, but not a single answer, so he tries calling out for the horse. It may have run away in fright or because of the weather, but no matter the reason, his dear horse is now gone.
That animal was a precious gift from his master.
The night can't possibly reach a new low. This by far ranks as one of the most regrettable days of his life.
But her judgment can mean death for him; he had failed once. What's to stop her from beheading him or torturing him?
His body receives shivers from the fear alone; the icy winds are just a finishing touch.
George stands as he hugs himself, pleading for his horse's return once more.
Alas, his pleas aren't answered as he begins trudging back to the castle.
Chapter 19
Scribbling his signature down on the document, Lorencio lets out a long, exhausted sigh.
Lately, he has been trying to find any excuse to keep himself in his study, as a distraction, of course. He fears his mind will run amok, nonstop worrying for his sister.
Of course, that means he has been keeping his distance from Shelton. The engagement remains undecided, with the answer becoming more blurry.
Lorencio's golden locks sway along with his stretches, but alas, he is interrupted by a knock.
He keeps himself silent, wishing whoever is on the other side would simply walk away, but that is not the case. The knocking resumes until Lorencio grumbles, rubbing his forehead in stress before beckoning the person inside.
His eyes widen in surprise at the unexpected visit, "Princess Aalis, I didn't know we were expecting you."
The blonde shuts the door gently behind her before venturing toward him. "Nice to see you too, Lorencio. And don't worry, it wasn't planned, I've been meaning to come ever since... My best friend disappeared. Just took a little push from my parents, but I wanted to stop here on my way to my room... I came to check on you."
She places herself gracefully in the smooth, bejeweled chair, staring straight at Lorencio.
He sighs, letting his shoulders fall into a slump. He trusts her enough as his sister's closest friend and a kind person as well. So what is the harm in showing the negative, unresolved feelings brewing within him?
"It's been harder on me than I expected. I work to distract myself and avoid my fiancé and my parents. I think what pains me the most is guilt. I wonder if I paid more attention, would she still be here? To add to that, letters from Prince Wood have been arriving at the castle without rest." Lorencio's sincere feelings pour over his firm walls.
Aalis giggles a bit at the end, "Robert has been sending letters to my estate, checking to see if Jocosa has been found. It's sort of sweet, but annoying quite at the same time."
"I agree, but I have to remember that he did tell me that he was planning to ask for her hand in marriage," Lorencio lets out a quiet sigh, "But then she went missing."
Aalis gasps at the unknown surprise, "Ah, he was? That is so sweet of him. I knew he was the perfect match for her," She calms down a bit, grasping at Lorencio's worked-up hands, "I want to let you know that none of this was something you could've stopped. That guilt in your heart? It's unnecessary, so get rid of it. But I bear the same feelings in my heart, so I understand your pain. I just wish there was something we could do to find her. How I miss her dearly."
Lorencio bites his lip nervously; he hasn't told anyone of his plan to avoid the words of discouragement.
But perhaps she shares his desperation.
"Listen, I plan to head into one of the markets and place posters around towns to announce a reward for information or her return. I know it sounds hasty, but I plan for either tomorrow or sooner. I plan to carry it out with or without your help; I just wanted you to know in case you wanted to join me."
The silence sits with the two of them as Lorencio waits for the harsh judgment that he had gotten from his parents. However, her reaction remains different.
"Lorencio... What a marvelous idea! I support you fully, whatever you need, I am here. In fact, please allow me to ride out with you."
"I'd love for you to come along," he says from his chair, prompting her to do the same. "Thank you for your support and kind words." She curtsies and approaches for a small hug.
"It was no problem at all! In fact, let me know whenever you need to speak freely," she rubs his arm in comfort before retreating to the door.
"I will be sure to remember that... I will call for you when I'm ready to head out. But for now, have a good day, Princess Aalis."
"You as well, Prince Lorencio," she pulls on her dress for a proper bow before shutting the door behind her.
Chapter 20
Yanking the door shut, Marshel joins the trio trudging through the thin layer of snow.
A few days have passed as Jocosa learns to get accustomed to the unfamiliar territory. The difficulty eases fast with the helpful Lola stuck to her hip.
But now they're heading into town.
The walk is expected to be long as they live more in the wooded parts.
But as they keep up their pace, they arrive quicker than expected. It is a stark contrast to the quiet and peaceful nature they had just left. People and carts fill the streets, the air with the hustle and bustle of the town. Jocosa's eyes crinkle at the sight of chatty merchants eager to sell their products.
"Okay, so an idea!" Bliss announces loudly to the trio, "How about we visit my family's bakery? They miss you both, mostly Lola. And I promise fresh bread for the young lady, so how about it?"
"Fantastic idea, plus I haven't seen your sister in quite some time," Lola entertains the sudden change of plans.
"Fine, we'll stop there, then head to the market," Marshel agrees as well, letting Bliss take the lead.
The extra steps aren't too harsh on their feet, as they arrive through a special path devised by Bliss's creativity. The cottage-style building is enveloped in flowers at the entrance, surrounding the door and the wooden steps.
Bliss shuffles toward the door, hearing the mess of sound meshing together: the customers, familiar shouting, and the mixing of ingredients and hard work in the back.
"Mother?" Bliss calls out, stepping into the cozy bakery.
"It's not her, but I," Nara approaches them with her bountiful curls bouncing behind her. Her fair skin glows in the dim light; she is gorgeous and indeed Bliss's sister. "You said you were going to be home last night, not the morning," she crosses her arms at the liar in front of her.
"I apologize, but never mind that! Please meet Jocosa, a new lady staying with Marshel and Lola," Bliss chuckles as she gently grasps Jocosa's shoulder, pushing her to the front to greet Nara.
"It's nice to meet you, Jocosa. I am Nara Ecclestone, this brat's older sister," she introduces herself, "Nice to see you both also." The siblings in the back bow quickly, greeting her back.
"Lola, come here, don't be a stranger," Nara smiles widely, opening her arms for the blonde.
The girl chuckles as she embraces Nara. They stay like that for a few moments until Nara finally lets her go and takes a step back. She reaches out and gently caresses Lola's lengthy hair, looking at her with a fond expression. "I hope you've been well," Nara says softly.
"Of course," Lola smiles.
"That brother of yours isn't causing much trouble for you, is he?" Nara raises an eyebrow toward the silent man.
"I know how to get my way," Lola winks as she giggles.
Nara chuckles lightly as she glances toward Marshel before turning toward her sister, "Now, why have you come?"
"I was hoping for one of those lovely loaves of bread to go, dear sister," Bliss asks innocently.
"You come here to take food, but refuse to work. You know you still owe me for covering for you the other two times you disappeared," Nara glares at her.
"I'll pay you back, please give me one, I promised Jocosa," Bliss pouts.
Nara glances at Jocosa before sighing and heading to grab one of the loaves that had conveniently just finished setting. "I want you back here by tomorrow night, I mean it," Nara demands, handing over the delicious-smelling bread.
"Thank you!" Bliss chirps as they head back out toward the falling snow.
"Ah, here we go!" Bliss sighs, breaking the bread apart and handing the larger piece to Jocosa, "Now we may eat and shop!"
The sights and smells of a market can be overwhelming, but that's part of the appeal. There are so many things to see, smell, and taste, and it can be hard to decide what to buy. So Marshel goes to gather food while the girls stroll around for clothing.
The tents and stands selling clothes and handmade items have prices from low to many coins. Thankfully, Lola and Bliss have the knowledge of whose tent to bargain at.
In no time, the group joins back together, ready to head back to the cozy cabin, but the unusual sight of royal guards makes them stop in their tracks.
Chapter 21
The sight of guards begins to be enclosed by curious villagers, pondering their unusual arrival, especially with the young prince among them.
He seems to be gathering his nerves as Princess Aalis consoles him with gentle pats on the shoulder. He nods towards one of the guards to begin.
"Dear villagers, we have an important announcement!" The man's voice reaches throughout the crowd.
Catching their attention, Marshel guides them all to the front of the crowd to listen in.
"Please remain quiet for his royal highness, Prince Lorencio!" The guard paves the way for the young man to take it away.
Lorencio's presence looms over the crowd as he begins to speak.
"I must sadly tell you all the princess is missing."
"How odd," Marshel notes to himself, glancing at Jocosa.
"She has been missing for some time, and I implore you to help me find her. If any of you have seen her or know her whereabouts, I urge you to come forward and tell me. I am willing to offer a generous reward to anyone who can provide me with information leading to her safe return. My sister is of fair complexion, with blonde locks, and a gentle, kind heart. She is dear to me, and I will not rest until she is safely returned to my family. Thank you for your time. I hope that with your help, we can find her," he bows slightly, ending his emotionally driven speech.
Jocosa's eyes study the prince and his companion as they mount their horses to ride away.
Something about the prince, she feels acquainted with him.
"How horrible," Lola says, kissing her teeth with pity.
"Alright, well, let's head back," Marshel urges them all to head back to the freezing forest.
The walk feels slightly faster as Jocosa knows what to expect on the brisk walk back to the cozy cabin.
"Jocosa?" Bliss chirps at the girl.
"Oh, yes?" Jocosa replies, startled out of her thoughts.
"Is something troubling you? I noticed you seem to be a bit distracted."
"Oh, that," she clears her throat awkwardly, "Well, about the prince, he felt familiar to me. Like, I feel attached to him after just meeting him."
The mood is disrupted by the chuckles of Bliss.
"Well, who in this village, hell, even this earth, wouldn't recognize the young prince?" Bliss laughs it off, slightly slapping Jocosa's shoulder.
Jocosa joins in on the laughter but quickly goes silent as she returns to her jumbling thoughts. His features run through her mind; it can't be just that he is the prince, it has to be something more. She is so sure of it.
Unbeknownst to the young lady, Marshel shares the same thoughts, silently eavesdropping on their loud conversation.
They both silently agree on one thing: it can't be a coincidence.
Chapter 22
The carriage rocked upon the forest floor as the neighs of May drifted through the air.
George loosened his buttons nervously as he heard the two ladies enjoying the ride.
Jocosa's eyes rested upon the dimmed scenery as Shelton remained quiet, holding a couple of items.
"Sister! Look at the snow! It's so wondrous, isn't it?" She gushed.
"Yes, Jocosa, it is, but settle down. That's not how a lady conducts herself," Shelton lightly scolded the girl into settling in her seat.
"Yes, of course," Jocosa muttered.
"Good," Shelton smirked.
"Wait, sister, why are we so far from the castle anyway? I know my parents don't want me venturing out very far," Jocosa mused.
"I have a surprise for thee, and I know how much you've wanted out of those confining walls. And I myself could also use some fresh air," Shelton covered her lie well, "So I had George set something up for us to do, just up ahead."
This night was far from sweet intentions.
"Oh gosh! You're so sweet, why thank you! But I don't want you to get in trouble!" Jocosa gasped loudly.
"It is you who is too sweet, don't worry about such things," Shelton perked up a kind smile, rubbing the younger girl's hand consolingly.
"Oh, and before I forget, I bought some treats along with us," Shelton reached into the seat next to her and pulled a basket into Jocosa's sight.
"Plenty of treats and drinks for us to enjoy," Shelton winked playfully.
"Oh my!" Jocosa squealed in excitement as she picked up the dainty basket. "You went all out! Thank you, big sister!"
A few moments go by as the carriage comes to a halt. "Lady Bloodworthe, we must walk from here. It's unsafe for the carriage as it is too wide."
"Open the door and let us out then," she slid the words through her gritted teeth. She would have preferred a cleaner escape as she dumps the girl's body in the woods, but if this is the obstacle within her path, then so be it. Both girls allowed their heels to make contact with the crunchy ground. Alas, there they are.
There is a cleared area with precious blankets protecting them from the freezing forest ground. "Come and sit," Shelton beckoned the younger over to join her on the ground.
They waste no time opening the basket to reveal the treats inside.
Shelton grabbed two glass cups, a particular vial, and a bottle containing alcoholic contents. She poured their drinks while slipping something extra into Jocosa's cup.
"Here, drink up!" Shelton handed her the glass with a cheerful, deceiving expression. Jocosa accepted the drink with full gratefulness and slipped the spiked contents down her throat.
It didn't take long for the concoction to take effect as her words began to slur.
"Sister... I don't feel so well," she mumbled as she attempted to grasp onto Shelton for support. But was shoved off quickly onto the cold fluff next to them.
"Serves you right," she murmured slyly.
"What's going on?" Jocosa asked as the fear caused her heartbeat to quicken.
"What's happening?" Shelton repeated tauntingly as she stood to her feet. "What's happening is I'm finally getting rid of a thorn in my side. You don't think I can't see through you? I want to marry your brother one way or another. It seems I chose the other way."
She crept closer and grabbed Jocosa's chin to gain dominance as she peered into her fluttering eyes. "Rest your eyes, little one. Don't fight it."
Jocosa jumps from her slumped position and grabs at her heaving chest. Who was that?
Chapter 23
It has been a while since that horrible excuse for a dream.
Jocosa had alerted everyone, and of course, they all had their own conclusions. Marshel's being the most practical.
He had only heard of a certain area where people with foreign hair colors exist. And it happens to be that their princess is in the castle.
Which is odd. Why would a princess be involved with her? But Marshel also had to keep track of the fact that their young prince's description did match Jocosa's. The two share similar facial features and wheat-colored hair.
But the timing is too coincidental.
But for now, they have decided to get used to having the girl with them as they try to solve the puzzling mystery. She has become accustomed to lending a hand with the domestic chores.
As she is now.
Settled on her knees next to the nimble young woman, Lola. She is teaching her the ways of the laundry.
Here the girls are, elbows deep in soapy water with a mix of colored clothes as they chat away.
"This is quite fun," Jocosa exclaims as she flicks her hair back from her face.
"Right!?" Lola giggles as she scrubs the clothing with enthusiasm. "Well, I know I ask you this almost every day, but how are you feeling?" She pauses, giving her arms a quick rest.
"And as I always respond, I'm fine. I mean it, I feel good here... with you," Jocosa nudges her shoulders playfully.
"I'm glad..." the girl doesn't finish as her hands delicately mess with the soapy water.
"What's the matter?" Jocosa asks worriedly.
"Well, uh, I wanted to ask... what do you think you want to do if you don't retrieve your memories?"
Jocosa is stumped as she releases the cloth from her hand, pondering the sudden question. "Actually, I haven't quite thought about that..."
The sudden sound of heavy footsteps puts a hold on their conversation.
"Why, it can't be..." Lola widens at the figures on the horses.
"Mama? Father?" She yells excitedly, jogging toward the pair.
"It is us, come here," her father holds a loving look for his little girl as he dismounts the chestnut-colored horse. He wraps his arms around her. Jocosa can tell that he has missed her.
"Ah, don't leave your mother out," her mother speaks up, stroking the horse's mane. Lola runs over to the woman responsible for her blonde hair, squeezing her ever so hard, harder than she did her father. They break the hug as her mother caresses her face, "Hello, my beautiful girl..." She notices Jocosa awkwardly standing, watching them all, "Who's this?"
Lola nervously chuckles, taking hold of her mother's hand and beckoning her inside their cabin, "It's best you come in... it's a long story."
Chapter 24
"You poor thing," Lola's father mutters as he looks at the frail girl before him.
He cannot help but feel a wave of pity flow through him. How unfortunate... the circumstances that have fallen onto the shoulders of the strange girl.
Lola has just finished relaying the recent circumstances to her parents as Marshel sets the tea down.
"I am alright now... thanks to Lola and Marshel," Jocosa bashfully peers down into her bulky, shapen cup. She looks up and gives them a small smile. Lola smiles back, understanding her gratitude. Even Marshel, who gives her a small nod.
Lola's parents are quiet for a few moments, processing the information. The blonde mother speaks slowly, taking one last sip, "So, she might be from the royal palace. Why haven't you tried to go there then?"
"Well, I don't want to trouble you any longer than I already have," Jocosa adds. The feeling of becoming a burden spreads throughout her body.
"Nonsense," the brunette male waves her off. "We'll wait a couple of days, as the journey there is a bit lengthy. We will prepare, and soon we will find out if that is truly your home." He insinuates as his kind smile shines down on the shy girl.
Jocosa glances up at him as gratefulness overtakes her face, eyes quivering as the tears creep up on her. "I... thank you so much, I'm so lucky to have run into you all. Thank you so much..." her mind blanks as she realizes she doesn't know the kind man's name.
"You may call me Mr. Thomas, and this here is my lovely, fighter of a wife, Lillian," he gently scoots Lillian to plant a soft kiss upon her forehead. "And dear, what's your name?" He tilts his head.
"Uh, Jocosa... sir," she bows as she gives her name. "Thank you, I don't know how I can repay you all," her face scrunches up as a few tears escape her.
"Don't worry, dear," Lillian smiles down at her with a few pats atop her head.
Jocosa glances around at the kind family gathered around her. She wipes away the few tears on her pale face as she turns to Lola. The look the two share is enough to convey that the bond has grown between the two. Lola reaches out and takes Jocosa's hands in hers. She gives them a gentle squeeze and smiles. Jocosa returns the smile, and the two know that they will be friends for life.
No matter what memories return, Jocosa silently promises to never forget the precious girl before her.
Chapter 25
"You ready?" Lola glances at the girl behind her before opening the front door.
As the freezing season is coming to an end, Lola had thought of a plan to take Jocosa out into the forest. There is a special field not too far from the cabin, which the family would occasionally visit once in a while.
An open field to play, perfect for the tense days they have endured.
"Uh-huh!" Jocosa fixes the layers atop her body, protecting her from the cold temperatures that await the two. The girl glances at the waiting hand that Lola had placed out just for her. Jocosa giddily accepts as the door unlocks, and they rush out excitedly.
"Be careful, you two!" The caring father yells after the duo. But his worries are not heard as they approach the makeshift path.
Making their way down the woody path, Jocosa and Lola are greeted by a grassy plain littered with dandelions. Jocosa's jaw lowers as she is amazed by the sight before her.
"Cool, right?" Lola smiles proudly as her goal is accomplished. "Well, come on!" She pulls Jocosa along, encouraging her to run with her. The two lose themselves in the sun-covered field, playing with one another. Their smiles grow as they assemble flower-crafted crowns for one another.
Lola playfully shoves Jocosa before jogging away, baiting the girl to chase her. Jocosa rolls her eyes but gathers herself and runs after her as the sun begins to lower. But, suddenly, the girl's feet come to a halt as something flashes in her vision and mind.
A brunette boy clasps her hand as they run into a field, just like the one she is standing in now. Jocosa could feel the adoration for the boy spreading throughout her chest. "Robert..." the girl breathlessly mutters as Lola finally turns around, realizing she isn't following her.
"Jocosa, what's wrong?" Lola tilts her head before jogging to her side.
"Oh, nothing. We should head back now, it's getting late," she brushes the memory to the side to ponder over it later. Lola agrees to take her hand once again to lead her back.
Their chatter fills the quiet forest around them as they take their time, not wanting this peaceful time to come to an end. As they approach the house, multiple knights and horses crowd the entrance.
As the twig breaks under Lola's boot, the blond male swishes his head toward the alerting sound. His hands go limp, dropping the portrait of the girl in front of him.
Chapter 26
The man wastes no time engulfing the confuddled girl in a longing embrace.
Jocosa jumps as the feeling of awkwardness quickly crawls through her skin. The tightness of the sudden embrace catches her off guard. She tries to remain still, but her body is shaking. She has to remind herself to breathe. She slowly relaxes, and the embrace becomes familiar.
"Where have you been... all this time!?" He shakily runs his hands along her weak arms. All this time away from her home... from him. Here she is, residing in the forest. He is filled with a thousand questions, wondering if her abduction had been orchestrated by someone.
"I'm sorry, who are you? The prince, am I right? You seem quite familiar, I couldn't figure out how, though. Do you know me somehow, sir?"
His face betrays him as his eyebrows twist in confusion. What is she on about? "Familiar? Why wouldn't I be? I'm your brother, of course. Why are you acting so strange, Jocosa?" His heart continues to sink as she doesn't reassure him that it's a joke. "Do you not know who I am? Not as the prince, but as your blood?"
"Have you really forgotten me?" He asks, his voice softening with a hint of desperation.
"I... can't remember," she mumbles, afraid that she has already disappointed someone who may be from her past. Not just a passerby, but perhaps her sibling.
Thomas cautiously steps to tap the distressed man's side so as not to put the guards on alert. "It's best you come in and take a seat. She has forgotten many things about her past."
The bewildered look on his face stretches further as Lorencio sees his sister rush from his side to the girl. As if he were a stranger or a madman. He feels so out of place as the girl clutches onto Jocosa protectively as if to shield her from him.
He realizes he has no choice but to listen to the man for an explanation of why his sister cannot recognize his face. He releases a short, stressed sigh as he orders his men to keep watch outside. Thomas bows, welcoming him into his home as Lorencio takes one last glance at Jocosa.
How could this have happened? Right under his nose at that.
Too much work for him to pay his own sister a morsel of attention. No way.
He would make sure she never felt cast aside as he spent most of his hours in his office. None of that matters at this moment as he continuously blames himself, dejectedly walking into the cabin.
Chapter 27
The shaggy brunette places down the steaming, bulky cups as the family gathers to discuss Jocosa with the young prince.
"The kids found her unconscious in the snow and took her in. Apparently, a strange man had come, but that was the only odd instance that had happened." Lillian begins to sum up the past occurrence of Jocosa's stay in their home.
"I thank you truly," Lorencio gratefully glances at the family sitting in front of him, "Who knows what would've happened if you had not found her so soon. But I just can't grasp how she can't remember me."
"Well, she couldn't even remember her own name, let alone how she got here. It's a miracle she can somehow remember you." Lola calmly defends the uneasy girl by her side.
Lorencio nods, noting to himself that he should appreciate that simple fact. "Of course, you are correct. I apologize for making it seem like I was accusing you all."
"No worries, young prince," Thomas steps in with a kind smile.
Lorencio slides up in the slightly uncomfortable seat, getting ready to achieve his goal.
Bringing his sister home.
"As you can imagine, my family has been struck with worry all this time. My parents and I want nothing more than to be reunited with Jocosa. I request that I take her home as soon as possible, tonight." He slowly speaks as he can see Jocosa grip the girl's arm for comfort.
"This is so sudden, how can you expect her to leave!?" Lola's voice quickly sounds before she is interrupted by the older woman next to her.
"It is only right, it is no problem." Lillian hushes her daughter to dodge offending her prince, who is satisfied with her answer.
He quickly stands, heading to the door, allowing Jocosa to give her goodbyes.
"Mr. Thomas and Ms. Lillian, thank you for allowing me to stay. And you, Marshel... I know we were at odds, but thank you for accepting me and giving me a chance." She tearily gives each of the three their own special words before getting to the last person.
Lola.
The one who took her in with no hesitation.
"I thank you for your patience and kindness. I'd be dead without your precious heart. I feel as if I can truly call you a friend, my closest one perhaps. Maybe we will grow closer and learn each other's secrets." The two face each other, mirroring tear-covered cheeks. "If you miss me," Jocosa unclasps the necklace from around her pale neck and drops it into Lola's palms, "Use this to reach me in the castle. I'm not sure it will work, but let us believe in the hope that we will see each other once more."
Lola can only silently grip her in a hug, thankfully taking the gesture. There are no words she can conjure up to match Jocosa's, so she puts it all in her eyes.
Lorencio clears his voice to break up the moment, letting them know they are losing daylight. She nods her head, understanding, before giving Lola's hands one last squeeze and dragging herself to the nippy outside.
She cautiously accepts her supposed brother's hand in helping her reach the top of the horse before he hops on after. Her eyes turn away from the grieving family before her as she looks toward the line of guards surrounding her.
Back to the castle... her actual home.
But it doesn't sit well with her; she wishes for more time. Alas, no prayers are answered as Lorencio orders the guards to get a move on.
Chapter 28
The ride back to the enormous castle is practically silent as all they can hear is the occasional neighs and clops of the horse's feet.
Jocosa stares at the passing scenery as her heart fills with woe. But soon she faces a massive rusty gate being lifted.
Home?
Her brother gently drops from the horse before lending his hand to his timid sister. She lingers behind his broad back as she tenses at the unfamiliar towering castle. The large doors creak open as the duo is immediately greeted by two furious figures.
"Lorencio Edward Bennet!" The Queen angrily sets her sights on her stubborn son. "What have we relayed to you time and time again? Yet you refuse to heed our words!?"
"Mother, please..." he begs her to listen as her rampage continues.
"None of that! I told you not to be driven by anger, yet you still..."
"Mother, I found her!" His wavering voice fills the entrance hall.
"W...What?" The King steps hurriedly down the grand staircase. Lorencio briefly turns his back to the two before casting his eyes to Jocosa's palm for permission.
She hesitantly allows him to present her to the surprised parents.
"My little girl..." Alloys rushes to his daughter's side and wraps his caring arms around her. Cateline covers her blubbering lips as tears stream down her rosy cheeks. She comes to take her turn bathing in her daughter's long-awaited return.
"There is something I must tell you both," the happy air dims with the serious tone in Lorencio's voice.
"What is it, son?" Alloys Bennet raises his thick eyebrow, giving his son his attention.
"Her memory... isn't what it was. She does not remember us or the castle; she has lost recognition of us all." His head hangs as tears gather in the bottom of his eyes.
Cateline places her hands gently on her quiet daughter's sagging shoulders, "Well, I am sure you are tired, my love. Let's get you in bed, and we shall talk in the morning." Along with a non-verbal response from Jocosa, they move slowly to her bedroom.
Her eyes travel along the columns and luscious sculptures among the halls next to the stationed soldiers.
Alas, a pecan-colored door is unlocked as the maids set candles along the room to rid it of the darkness. The room looks as if it's remained still as a picture, as her mother made sure to keep it tidy until her return.
Jocosa slowly tiptoes into the spacious room, as she does not know what to do with herself. Her mother bids her goodbye, not wanting to overstimulate the girl. Jocosa takes a moment, letting her curiosity roam the room belonging to her.
So different from the little cabin she was just in moments ago. She begins to lie her body on the bed that is at least three times her size. It feels so unnatural, although so regular.
Was this the life she was living before the loss of her memories?
But the distant memories of Lola cloud her mind as, with one more lingering sigh, she tries to obey the call of sleep.
Chapter 29
The sparkling sunlight rushes through her room as the maids begin their morning duties.
"Miss Jocosa," one of the maids gently wakes the slumbering girl, "We were told to get you ready for the family breakfast in the dining hall." Just as she is about to question the orders, she is politely yanked out of warm bedding.
As the young girl is undressed and given a fresh new gown to flaunt around in, an uncomfortable feeling creeps within her.
Not even given a chance to catch a short breath, they rush her down the extravagant halls to dine with her awaiting family.
As the grand doors creak open, all eyes fall on her as Jocosa nervously shuffles to her assumed seat.
An awkward silence quickly covers the family until her father decides to speak up.
"Well, daughter, how did you sleep?" He awkwardly lifts his head to face her.
"It was alright, t-thank you," Jocosa nervously gives him a reassuring smile.
"There's normally one more of us, your brother's dear fiancée. But she is out on a short trip at the moment, you will get the chance to meet her at a later date.
She again gives him a weak smile before glancing down at her full plate and sparkling silverware. The unwelcome feeling spreads as she once again feels out of place.
But soon, one by one, her supposed loved ones flee from the dining hall. Leaving her perplexed and feeling diminutive.
As maids pour into the room to carry the finished plates away, Jocosa backs away to be out of the way. Unexpectedly, she finds herself wandering the large halls of the fancy castle. The portraits and intricate designs adorn the walls until boredom catches up with Jocosa.
Sighing in defeat, Jocosa retraces her steps to her assigned bedroom. Her footsteps fall as she sets her eyes on an office, seemingly owned by her presumed older brother.
Thinking about her future action of knocking on this door, she doubts he'll be happy getting interrupted, but the bond between them must be recovered. So here she is taking the first step.
Her frail fist taps against the large door before her, and a male voice follows, beckoning her into the study. Twisting the knob, Jocosa enters the room while her eyes trace the rich decorations and organized shelves.
"Oh," Lorencio stumbles as his eyes find his unexpected guest, "Jocosa... I wasn't expecting you."
Her smile twitches as she plays around with her nimble fingers, "Well, I've been touring the castle, and I stumbled upon your office. I uh hope I'm not being a bother..." Her words trail off as her heartbeat picks up.
"Of course not!" Lorencio jumps up at her conclusion, "I just wasn't expecting you, that's all there is to it. How have you been finding the castle?"
"Very big, I lost track of where I was after passing the gallery." She pitches a falling smile as her head droops once more.
"Well, as you see, I've been held up with paperwork, but now that you are here, sister... how would you like to accompany me outside? We can play your favorite game."
"That sounds lovely, but I most likely don't remember what game you speak of." There, that feeling goes, the frustration of not being able to connect.
"No matter, I remember," he jogs to the door before laying his palm out for her to take, "Shall we?"
Chapter 30
The open field and traveling skies greet the high-spirited pair of siblings as they mosey over to the castle courtyard.
"Ah, here we are," Lorencio sighs as a growing smile on his face greets the peaceful scene in front of him.
"And where is this?" Jocosa mutters as the playful winds rush over to brush her hair.
"The castle courtyard, sister, we would journey over here to play around or catch a break from the suffocating air of aristocrats." He chuckles as he turns to meet her intrigued gaze.
"Thank you for taking me with you again. I hope I'm not bothering you," she mumbles with an unsure smile.
He swats his hands around at her presumptuous statement before placing his palm upon her blonde strands. "Enough of such belittling words, let us enjoy ourselves, hm?"
Jocosa's cheeks rise at his affirmations, and her head slowly rises to meet his kind gaze. "Let us."
The nimble clouds float by as the two take their time frolicking around in the lime-colored field. The insects dancing around them, their excitable energy extending to the nature around them. The carefree smiles Jocosa flashes around at Lorencio warm his heart as an older sibling. Seeing her back in their home gives him comfort after the long journey of tracking her down. Classic childhood games to liven up their day.
"I wonder where you ever could be," Lorencio ponders out loud as Jocosa giggles in her hiding place.
Suddenly, a hand taps the girl's shoulder; she's been found.
"You were never good at this game, were you?" Lorencio sasses at the startled girl.
"El, no fair, you cheated," she pouts as she stands from her hiding spot.
"You just called me..." Lorencio's lips twitch as his emotions rise.
"That's your nickname, is it not?" Jocosa looks up with an unsure smile, "I suddenly remembered a figure that reminded me of you and another girl with me. In a place just like this, El is what I called you, right?"
His dimples shine as he embraces her suddenly, "Yes, you gave me that name, and that girl was your best friend." He quickly pulls back to reassure his little sister, "No matter how much you can or cannot gain from your memories, I will be here for you."
Chapter 31
Days have passed, and more memories of Jocosa's life have returned to the girl.
Being suffocated by the enormous castle was just what the girl needed, along with the push of her brother. Specks of wanted memories floated to her grasp, but the past of the cabin surrounded by frost remains.
As for the current events, Jocosa is enjoying the spectacle of her brother's training. The opposition's step falters, earning her brother the match. The female immediately begins to clap with joy for her brother before a pair of footsteps catches her ear.
Twisting her body to catch a view of the newcomer, Jocosa finds her eyes settling on her birth mother.
"Good afternoon," Jocosa speaks lowly with a flickering smile.
"Afternoon, my dear, would you mind accompanying me to someplace?" The queen extends her manicured hand.
The mature woman guides Jocosa through the castle walls until they arrive at the supposed destination. Her bedroom door creaks open as her mother encourages her to place herself in front of the grand vanity. Gently grasping the strands of Jocosa's hair, Cateline begins to stroke the bed of hair with a brush in hand.
"I... remember the times just like this, you and I gathered together in front of this old mirror. It brought me much joy seeing you talk to me. I was wondering if you would join me again." Cateline didn't want her own blood to feel like a stranger, yet that's the feeling coursing through her. Not knowing the child, she cradled her in her arms. "I know you may not remember me, but please try with me. Hm?" Begging for a relationship that stemmed years ago just to be forgotten. The feeling felt so foreign and unwelcome.
Locking eyes with the still woman, she breathes deeply before telling her the story of where this all began for her. "A kind girl had taken me in, and we bonded. Then I fell for the rest of her family; they hadn't much, but it was plenty for them. Then, my brother found me, a strange man, telling me that we were related. It happened so fast. Yet I feel comforted here, and I hope our bond will return as well." Jocosa's face wrinkles as she gives her mother a kind smile.
Returning said smile, Cateline takes a moment for herself as her emotions settle. "I thank you, darling, you are as kind as I remember you. Yet, I do have news. You might not remember, but you have an engagement with a neighboring prince. You had agreed to marry before we had lost you, but don't catch the wrong idea. I have no intention of forcing you to go through, but I want to tell you we have alerted him of your return. He would like to visit you, my dear."
Jocosa remains quiet as she thinks back to the faint memory of the field. If the memories were strong enough to remain, she should try. "I agree to continue the engagement."
"Splendid!" Her mother's joyous tone reaches the girl's heart. "Alas, I am finished, dear. Take a look."
Jocosa's head tilts up at the twin set of ponytails, a smile gratefully growing.
"There you are, my beautiful girl," Cateline places a kiss on her head.
The nickname falling upon Jocosa's ears feels as natural as can be. Yet the loving moment remains interrupted.
"My Queen." The maid bows, entering the space.
"Yes, what is it?"
"Dinner has been prepared as well as the prince's betrothed arrival."
"Well, we must be on our way," the queen glances down, gathering her daughter to her feet.
But Jocosa's thoughts remain on the infamous woman. She wonders if she'll match her brother's kindness.
Chapter 32
The knights quickly unlatch the dining room doors so that the two women can enter.
The bubbling anticipation of seeing the woman belonging to her brother has grown with each step.
The woman flexes the posture within her dressed body with the occasional giggle and wiggle of her wild, red curls. The autumn aesthetic dress touches the floor, and her long sleeves drape as she moves to stand.
"Ah, mother, Jocosa, my lady has arrived," he teases the lady clinging to his arms as she plays along with the dramatic reveal. "Meet my love, Shelton Bloodworthe."
The woman spins in his arms to finally face his younger sister. "My little sister! How I enjoy seeing you return!" The sickening smile dances across her face as she moves to embrace the stagnant girl.
Her face strikes a remarkable feeling with Jocosa's body, fear.
Her familiar face, her red curving lips, where has she seen this woman?
The freezing feeling grabs hold of the shaky girl, her dream. Those eyes remind her of an unmistakable emotion, leaving a rather unpleasant impression on her body.
Her overwhelming emotions guide her body behind the body of her mother. Clutching on tightly to her mother's gown, a source of confidence sparks as she slowly speaks.
"I remember you... You did this to me!"
The shout reaches even the outside maids as everyone remains stunned. Her body continues to shake uncontrollably as her finger raises to point to the vile woman between them. "You poisoned me."
The accused woman stands as her mask begins to crack, but alas, she intends to go down fighting.
The tears spring from Shelton's eyes as her knees buckle, "How could you accuse me of such unspeakable acts!?" The distressing scene commands Lorencio to fling himself to his lover's side.
"How about we postpone the dinner?" The king moves from his spot in an act of desperation to stop the sudden scene.
"I think that is best, Alloys." The Queen's face remains still as her grip hardens on her trembling daughter.
Chapter 33
The shuffling of her gown resounds throughout the silent room, along with her brewing anxiety.
Is this it? The end of her rotten schemes?
The suspicion, the loud stares, and the gossip from lowlifes make her crimson blood boil.
Her nails diminish in the face of the anxious fright she is currently wallowing in. Will she go down so easily?
She dramatically thrashes upon her bed as her brain continues to ramble.
The tension lies heavy as George enters the eerily shadowy room.
"My lady?" The young man mutters as his eyes fall on her pathetic figure.
It takes her crooked mind a while to conjure up a loose plan. But to her scratched-up mind, it was recklessly beautiful—a second chance to plan that blonde girl's demise. The shrill cackles of her voice reach the startled knight as she suddenly rises.
"Bring me the physician," she mutters lowly, directing the cowardly knight before her.
"I beg your pardon?" He quivers, not quite catching her command.
"Bring me, Reginald, now!" She roars ferociously. The man's feet carry him out of the room as his fright tries to force him to remain in place. Finally, with more supervision and precision, she'll finish the brat off for good. She smirks at her final plans; this must work.
It may be the final straw to break the camel's back.
Chapter 34
The family of royals gathers outside to wait for Prince Robert's arrival.
Queen Cateline clings to her daughter's palm as her nervous face is easily read.
The royal carriages quickly come into view as the copious amount of horses drag them along with fatigued neighs. The melodies of trumpets float into the air as the prince is welcomed and announced.
His long, chestnut boots dig into the gravel as he separates himself from the tiny carriage, eager to stretch his legs and greet the Bennet family.
Jocosa audibly gasps as the sun shines on the overwhelming beauty belonging to her betrothed, Robert Wood Althan.
His hair remains close-cropped just as she had pictured in her flashy memory. She beams a nervous smile whilst she takes in the contrasting colors, emphasizing the contours of his rosy complexion. The jewels and fine textures of his chosen outfit of the day only made him grandly beautiful in her innocent eyes.
His light freckles are almost easy to miss as she focuses on the many creases made by his dazzling smile.
As he makes his way across the cobblestone courtyard, he respectfully approaches the family as he bows. He straightens his nimble body, and he meets the eyes of Jocosa, a noble lady of grace and poise. The air is filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the distant murmur as he approaches her.
Robert gently lifts Jocosa's hand to his lips, pressing a reverent kiss upon her shaky fingers. After a quick greeting to the family for the sake of customs, Robert glances down to lock gazes with the young girl.
"Lady Jocosa," Robert's tone eases through Jocosa's pleased ears, "may I have the honor of your company for a stroll in the castle gardens? Time is precious, and I wish to make the most of every moment. As we have been away from each other for far too long."
"I-I do, I mean I would love to," she sheepishly accepts the sudden invitation. She slowly releases her mother's grip before turning to her reassuring eyes. The warm smile offers her courage as she is whisked away with Robert.
The grandeur of the castle slowly diminishes as they approach the blooming courtyard. Perfect scenery to ease the two royal minds as they find a place to begin their chat.
Robert spots the bench lying in their path and invites her to settle on the wooden structure.
"Jocosa," he begins the nonexistent conversation before turning to face her. "Do you mind my saying your name? I wish to respect you."
"No, I don't mind. Not at all," she catches the trailing of his words quickly, offering honest reassurance.
"Then I shall continue." A smile quickly appears before he attempts to compose himself. "Jocosa, "I do apologize as my duties and obligations kept me away from appearing sooner. Do know I fought my best, though my father remains unhappy with my absence. I came to say that after I received your family's letter, my heart sank. All our memories that I hold dear are no longer with you. It did hurt, and I wanted nothing but to immediately return to our old ways. Before your disappearance, we were so close to marrying our kingdoms and our hearts. But then I wondered how you must have felt, all the confusion. I worried for days, wondering what must have happened before you were found. Ah, I'm getting off track. What I came to say is I don't wish to lord this engagement over you; I want to respect your new wishes. Whether your heart still remembers me or not, the decision remains with you."
He begins to rise, thinking she may want time to herself after his speech, but his steps cease.
Jocosa's hand flies up to grasp him, with prickling tears and an earnest smile.
"R-Robert, the reason I agreed to accompany you to the palace gardens was because I remembered you, A memory of us in a field with wide smiles."
Robert's head bends as he silently smiles at the day he holds dear. The day they vowed their love to one another, regardless of their arranged marriage.
"I wished to see if seeing you would make those feelings return. You seem so kind, so loving in your gaze in the memory. I wish to continue our engagement if you want to as well, but I do not wish to burden you."
"Burden? My love, as soon as I heard of your disappearance, I wished to rush to your brother's aid to help with the search." He rushes to sit back by her side, "You can never be a burden, of course, I want to remain by your side. For as long as you'll have me."
She smiles as the salty tear slips down her delicate face, "You mean it?"
The sun reflects in his eyes as he reassures her once more, "Without a doubt." He presses his firm lips against her forehead before meeting her gaze with a sighing smile.
The fire that was once grey smoke in their hearts releases into a tiny, lit flame.
Chapter 35
The lighting of the castle rains down onto the father and daughter as they shuffle their pieces around the broad board.
The king thought of an afternoon activity the two would enjoy, and the thoughtful outcome was chess. Luckily, some memories of the game have remained as she begins to match her father's strategy.
Yet the king still has one trick tucked in his sleeve. He swiftly maneuvers his pawn, ending the game while leaving his daughter puzzled. "How?" She breathlessly stutters as her dad smiles in swirling pride.
The king's smile widens as he watches his daughter's expression. With a twinkle in his eye, he leans forward, his voice a low whisper filled with pride and amusement.
"My dear daughter," he begins, "the key to mastering the game lies not just in the strength of individual pieces, but in the strategy of the entire board." Yet his words die down as a knight arrives with news.
"My lord, a family has entered the palace with the royal family pendant. They claim the princess had entrusted them with the item, and they are currently requesting an audience with her," the knight announces as he grips onto the hilt of his sword nervously.
Alloys swerves his attention onto his daughter, "Do they speak the truth? Have you met these people before my child?"
Jocosa's eyes widen as realization floods her. How could she ever forget? The shelter and love bestowed upon her by Lola and her dear family. "Father, I have; they were the ones who found me."
Sensing the urgency in her voice, Alloys turns to the knight, nodding his head. "Very well, escort them to the throne room. Alert the queen as well."
"Of course, your Majesty," the knight quickly turns on his heels as he goes to carry out his orders.
"So these are the people that kept you safe?" Alloys finds his daughter's gaze to find her nodding with a smile. "I suppose we should hurry along then," he gently guides her along to the throne room where her mother and the others wait.
The knights quickly open the throne room doors and allow the two to saunter in.
"Jocosa..." Lola's words fall as she rushes to embrace the princess, who is frozen with cheerfulness. Bliss, who is hot on her tail, wraps her arms around the two.
They take their time greeting one another before the Queen clears her throat.
"Ah, mother, this is Lola and her family. They found me in the woods and took care of me with no complaint." Jocosa subconsciously grips Lola's hand as she introduces her saviors.
The Queen nods, stepping down from her throne, "I want to thank you for the generosity you showed my daughter when she was on her deathbed and lost. Just watching you interact with her shows how much she trusts you all. My husband and I would like to offer you an official pass to the palace to visit whenever you would like. As well as a chest full of jewels and gold, we hope you accept our thanks."
Lillian steps up as her hands clamp down onto one another, "We would be fools to refuse, but I want you to know my daughter had no intentions of receiving an award. She just wanted to see a dear friend."
The King chuckles with a smile full of sincerity, "Furthering our point of rewarding you. We are glad that our flower found such a kind family. We hope you will stay for a feast?"
Chapter 36
The numerous flaming candles illuminate the focused prince.
Leaning back in his perfectly crafted lounger, his eyes skim the page. A petite knock brings a long sigh as the story's climax is just a page away. Lorencio swiftly rolls his eyes and places his book on the low table below.
"Who begs to enter at this hour?" Lorencio's voice deepens as he requests identification.
"My prince, it is I, Reginald, the physician." A meek, manly voice answers his question.
His golden brows furrow at the name, "And what business do you have with me? Is something wrong with the princess?"
"Nothing of the princess's health, but I beg of you to allow me in. I have urgent news."
"As you wish, you may enter," Lorencio releases yet another sigh, allowing Reginald into his office.
The lean man fumbles with the knob before twisting it, revealing his anxious state. The prince's eyes sharpen at the uneasy sight.
"Thank you, my lord, for accepting me," Reginald bows lowly.
"No need, what is the news you wish to share?" Lorencio wishes the man would skip the pleasantries so his book could be continued. But the nature of the situation reveals that the book will remain shut for the evening.
"How I wish that I had approached you sooner; perhaps most of my mistakes would be erased. Alas, I am nothing but a coward," his teeth rattle as the truth begins to travel upward as if it were bile. "Princess Shelton is behind the young princess's disappearance. Having her knight carry out her malicious plans. I am filled with regret, as her threats and temper have kept me away from spilling my truth."
Lorencio's eyes gloss over with tears as the words torture his heart.
The nights when she would delicately stroke his shaky shoulders as he yearned for his sibling. Yet the reason was so close, alas, his eyes remained closed as if he was blind to the blatant truth. His fists scrunch and contort in frustration as he stands on his feet. "Guards! Fetch my family and my betrothed this instant! To the throne room, at once!"
Chapter 37
"Lorencio Edward Bennet! What is the meaning of this!? Have you any clue what hour it is!?"
Cateline's voice roars, laced with annoyance. The flickering candlelight illuminates the family's tired gazes.
"Mother, I do apologize, for this matter is of the utmost importance," his voice floats as his fists remain clenched at the sight of the villainous woman.
"My love, are you alright?" Shelton shuffles over to his side, grasping his face. Lorencio bites back his harsh tone as he slips away from her unwanted touch.
"I'm fine." His shrill voice startles the redhead as her pupils widen.
The confusion and alertness rise within as she finally spots the towering physician in the corner.
Her mind screams at the thought of his betrayal. Her head swishes back to her betrothed, wondering if he'd figured her out.
Impossible.
She bunches her gown as her body sways with anxiety, granting Lorencio space.
"Mother, Father, and my dearest sister, I sincerely apologize to you all," his voice trembles with the thought of guilt and Shelton's betrayal.
Jocosa's eyebrows fall as the sudden apology takes her aback. "B-Brother, what is the matter?"
"There is a traitor amongst us. A snake. A vile creature who bears responsibility for the attempted attack on my sister."
The room bubbles with silence as Lorencio's head rises and swivels.
His slender finger directs attention to the stagnant redhead.
"Princess Shelton."
Her face beams with surprise as she begins sputtering to avoid the accusations. "My prince! I assure you, I would never dream of such a horrendous act."
"Ah, but you did! You carried my sister into that forest under false promises with the intent to take her away from us!" His tears descend as his speech begins to falter.
"I-I would never!" She wears a deceiving expression as she continuously denies the accusation.
"The physician has already confessed. This facade of yours is useless," he stops her yammering as she remains stunned. Her freakish gaze falls onto the cowering Reginald.
"Well, well, well," Cateline's lips tremble in seething rage.
Shelton's eyes dart away from the angry gazes. "I did what was necessary."
"I beg your pardon?" Cateline's voice peeks.
"That girl was going to sabotage my marriage! I had to! It's her fault!" She begins to cackle loudly as shame begins to exit her body.
"And you," Shelton's gaze locks onto Reginald. "You goddamn coward. You dare pin this on me? It is your medicine and your route that allowed me to take her."
The door flies open as guards storm through looking for the dastardly girl.
"You live as a coward, and you'll die as one." She spits as her feet begin to shuffle backward away from the armored men. "All I did was love your son, and this is how I am repaid? You all can go to hell! Alas, if I must go, then I'll take your precious daughter with me!"
Her heels clack loudly as she pounces on the young girl.
Jocosa's body clings to the ground as she attempts to fight the vicious woman. Her hands fly, attempting to push her away when she tenses under the sudden pressure around her throat.
"You keep trying to take him away from me!" Shelton's enraged expression matches her hardening grip until she freezes in place.
The glistening blade holds an immense aura as she glances toward the imminent threat.
Lorencio's eyes light with vengeance, gazing down on the treacherous woman before him.
"Unhand her before I rid everyone of your presence."
Shelton's lips tremble as she scoffs, "You wouldn't dare, you love me."
"I beg of you, test me."
Chapter 38
The sun shines on the playful ladies below its rays.
Their dresses mingle over one another as they gather to play and converse. As they begin, the topic of Shelton is quick to flow through the busy air. Jocosa sighs as she appeases their thirst for information.
The disastrous night of the reveal of Princess Shelton's devilish plans was followed by a grim morning.
The decision for her execution was quickly agreed upon within the council to be carried out with haste. As decreed, it only took two nights for her execution to be publicly announced.
The royal Bennet family had all attended, and the young princess's reluctance was not unnoticed. Yet the council wouldn't allow her absence. Her family did all they could to shield her from the gruesome sight.
The rough shackles tightly bound her arms as they made sure she was stripped of all dignity. The speech was quick as the looming man swung his axe as Shelton begged for her one-sided love to forgive her. Yet her prayers of lovely mercy were not gifted as her lifeless body slumped against her restraints.
The cowardly knight continuously shook as they moved to burn her body, preparing the stage for his execution. George's anxious demeanor was met with an unforgiving crowd.
There was nothing the man could say to plead his case, for he followed the monstrous orders.
George's execution was quite short compared to Shelton's. Perhaps the executioner harbored pity for the young knight.
Following that dark day, the young princess began to flourish and connect with her royal roots with no looming threat.
Numerous memories had returned to the young girl, leading to the announcement of her return to court.
"I am filled with relief that this nightmare is over," Princess Aalis tuts as she tosses the rubber ring. "Though, as much as I apologize, it never seems to please my brain. I deeply apologize," she turns to Jocosa, reaching for her dainty hands, "As much as I wished to be here, my kingdom urged me to return as we were threatened with war."
"As I remind you, for the twentieth time, might I add, I do accept her apology. Though it would have been great for memories of us to have been returned to me, I am thankful for you spending time with me. Though it seems my heart recognizes you even if my head is unsure." Jocosa reassures her with smiling eyes. "I am glad to move past this, though in a way it has made me grow and meet wonderful people," she turns to the honey-haired woman beside her to give her a loving glance.
As she finishes her round of tossing, Lola straightens herself, "I am happy to have met you as well, princess."
"You know I don't like it when you address me with such titles. We're friends, aren't we?" Jocosa pouts playfully.
"Of course, princess. Though I hope it stays this way. Us, I mean. As friends."
"Only if you agree to become one of my court ladies," Jocosa says shyly. Lola's eyes widen in the gleaming sun as a gasp escapes her.
"Y-You mean it? You know I don't even come close to the other ladies." Lola mutters as Jocosa embraces her hands.
"All that matters is that you mean more to me than those others attempting to raise their status. With you, I know that your intentions and love are genuine. And I wish to help you and your family whilst you remain by my side. Seems like a win-win situation to me. Would you join me in the palace, my dear friend?" Jocosa begs as her eyes search within Lola's for confirmation.
"I would be honored," Lola mumbles as tears slide down her rosy face. Jocosa and Lola giggle as they twirl in a loving embrace.
"Aha, by the gods, I have won!" Aalis boasts as her ring swings around the last post. She glances back toward the emotional pair as her raised hands begin to descend, "I'm interrupting, aren't I?"
Chapter 39
"Princess, Queen Bennet, we're finished," the maid announces.
Jocosa's eyes widen as she stares at the reflection in the mirror. Behind her stand her mother and Aalis.
Jocosa turns with confusion laced in her brows, "Why are you all crying?"
Her mother steps close, grasping her hands, "My dear, you have been through so much. I never thought I would have the chance to experience this joy. This is not an everyday experience, you know."
"You look marvelous," Aalis sniffles. "The perfect bride."
"You're going to make me cry again," Jocosa's voice wavers.
The door suddenly opens. Lola rushes through, "My my, you are gorgeous."
"Not you too," Jocosa jokingly pouts.
"Don't worry, I've come to collect you all. We're starting," Lola ushers the three to follow her. Aalis and Lola bid their farewells before running off, leaving the Queen and Princess to have a moment between themselves.
"Don't be nervous, my dear, just focus on what brought you here," her mother mutters before leaving a kiss on Jocosa's forehead. Jocosa thanks her.
She grips the bouquet as the guards push open the doors.
"Announcing Her Royal Highness, Princess Jocosa!"
Jocosa steps through the sea of bodies as familiar faces turn toward her. The golden fabric of her gown shimmers like sunlight. Her heart pounds loudly with each monumental step.
A murmur of admiration ripples through the hall as she gracefully grasps Robert's hand to climb the steps of the altar. The two lovers exchange confident looks before bowing.
The priest starts the ceremony with a prayer. "May this union bring peace and prosperity to both their hearts and this kingdom," he declares. "Before these two seal this arrangement, is there anyone who holds a reason to prohibit this marriage?"
After a moment of silence, Jocosa giggles as Robert peacefully sighs.
"Then we shall proceed. Both shall sign the agreement between both kingdoms."
Robert dips the quill pen in the ink before signing his name. He hands the pen to Jocosa, watching as she follows his example.
"Now, bring forth the rings." The royal jeweler steps forward, presenting the wedding bands. Robert moves first, pinching the ring between his fingers as he delicately grabs Jocosa's hand. He slides the ring onto her fourth finger before holding his hand out. Jocosa trembles slightly as she takes her turn. The two quickly turn toward the priest for the crowning.
The symbol of her new role is placed upon Jocosa's veil, as Robert receives his crown.
He then stands, taking his place by her side as the priest declares their new reign and marriage. The two newlyweds turn to seal their marriage with a brief yet profound kiss.
Jocosa and Robert lead the crowd to the next room for the celebration.
As the wonderful event rolls through the night, Jocosa watches her loved ones indulge in the festivities. Jocosa watches Lorencio and Nara talking, their expressions soft as if something romantic is blossoming.
Suddenly, hands slide across her midsection as she recognizes the scent of the mystery person, "Robert, you scared me."
"I apologize, I just saw you standing here all alone. I got worried," he rests his chin on her shoulder.
"I'm just watching everyone; they all seem so happy," she responds with a smile.
"Are you happy, my love?" Robert whispers.
Jocosa spins in his arms, facing him as her hand caresses his soft face, "Of course I am. I just keep thinking of how I would never have found my way back if you all had never looked for me. You all saved me, and I'm truly grateful. I love you, I truly do."
"As do I, Jocosa. We all love you." He leaves a sweet kiss on the back of her hand.
Her family, friends, and the man she loved are all here, celebrating this new chapter with her.
That is the end of Evocation. Thanks for reading.
