Neon Insurgence - Part 6
In a dystopian future, a father must fight a major corporation and AI to free his kidnapped daughter. Time and short and he must move as fast as technology.
My fingers danced across the keyboard. Each hit barely makes a sound as I work alongside my new allies. The glow of their screens illuminated their faces in the dimly lit room. Like the others, I hunched over my computer. My sole focus involved infiltrating the AI system that ran my wife's powerful corporation. My daughter's safety and recovery depended on my success.
"Alright, team," I whispered, wiping the sweat beading on my brow. "We're in this together. Let's take these corporate bastards down."
"Got your back, Carro," Max Kincaid replied, his eyes never leaving his screen. Though he was young and seemingly carefree, Max's brilliance as a technician made him an invaluable member of the resistance.
"Same here," chimed another rebel, determination etched on her face.
Every stroke I made got me deeper into the AI system. It also brought me face-to-face with harsher security measures that took longer to hack. Biometric scanners and firewalls threatened my progress. No matter how prepared I was for this, it took me valuable time to bypass everything.
Come on, Carro. You can do this! Emily needs you.
"Damn," muttered Max, gazing at his screen. "These firewalls are no joke. It's like trying to crack a safe with a toothpick."
"Stay calm," I urged. It was challenging to give them hope as my screen flickered as I navigated through the virtual labyrinth. "Think of it as a puzzle; we've got all the pieces. We need to put them together."
"Right," Max agreed, taking a deep breath.
I worked silently, with the occasional swear or sigh of defeat breaking the quiet room. My programs helped pass low-level personnel's biological signs. It took me several nights, but I finally completed it after working hard on it for several nights. After initiating the program, the scanner flashed green to show we all had access to that area.
"Nice work, Carro," Max praised. He sounded genuinely impressed.
"Thanks," I said. If I was honest with myself, I felt a bit of pride and sat with a straighter back because of it. "But we've still got a long way to go."
The infiltration took time. The corporation systems had so many security features it made my head spin. Each is designed to keep the most skilled hackers, like myself, at bay. The person who created this system used many layers of encryption and changing patterns to protect it. This made them nearly unpenetrable.
"Okay, I'm going to try something," Max announced, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "I've been working on this bypass script for months. It should get us through, but there's no guarantee it won't set off any alarms."
"Let's give it a shot," I said. "We're not backing down now."
"Here goes nothing," Max muttered, hitting the enter key to activate the script.
The relief was palpable. Like the others, I exhaled in relief as the firewall crumbled on my screen. This gave me access to the deeper levels of the corporation's intranet the AI ran. For a moment, I celebrated with the others. A few cheers rang out, echoed by sighs of relief.
"Alright, let's keep moving," I said. My mind raced with thoughts of my missing daughter. At one point, I found her, and then everything went dark. Every second counted. If I failed, I might never see her again, and that was a thought too painful to bear.
The air crackled with tension as I continued navigating through the AI system's labyrinthine architecture. It was a maze of chaos, making no sense. Sweat beaded on my forehead as I struggled to make sense of the patterns. My holographic keyboard flickered as I searched for any backdoors or encrypted files. So far, I found nothing but an endless ocean of useless data. I would drown here if I didn't find anything soon.
"Got one," I muttered under my breath, feeling an adrenaline rush as I bypassed a stubborn security algorithm. "Max, you're up."
"Copy that, Carro." Max's eyes narrowed in concentration. "There's so much here. It's endless."
"Guys, we've got company," whispered Jenna, our resident surveillance expert. Her voice was like ice, sending a shiver down my spine.
My heart raced as I glanced at the live feed she projected onto the wall. Corporate security forces, wearing high-tech armor, were searching the facility.
"Shit," Max hissed, his fingers pausing momentarily above his keyboard. "We need a plan, now."
"Alright, listen up," I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite my pounding heart. "Jenna, monitor their movements. We'll try to stay one step ahead and avoid any direct confrontations. Max, help me find a secure location for us to regroup."
"Got it," they both replied in unison, their faces etched with determination.
As I continued to hack through the AI system, I couldn't shake the gnawing fear deep in my gut. My daughter's fate hung in the balance, and these corporate goons could ruin everything if they caught us. The room we set up a temporary shop in was small and out of the way. One few used, so we didn't think to worry. I did, as there was a good chance my luck would run out.
"Carro, there's an empty server room three floors up," Max informed me, his voice strained. "I think we can make it there without being spotted, but we'll need to move fast."
"Good. Let's go." I tore my gaze away from the holographic display and scanned our surroundings, seeking any threats.
"Wait," Jenna cautioned, her eyes glued to the live feed as she observed the security forces closing in on our location. "There's a patrol coming down the hallway. We'll have to wait for them to pass."
"Damn it," I muttered, frustration boiling inside me. Time wasn't on our side, and every second spent waiting felt like an eternity.
"Carro," Max whispered, his eyes locked on mine. "We'll make it through this. Just breathe."
For a moment, I allowed myself to draw in a deep breath, focusing on my chest's steady rise and fall. Emily, I'll find you. Dammit to hell. We should've prepared better. There was no way for me to know this. The moment caught me up, along with dread. I couldn't let this fear bring me down. I turned my attention back to the task at hand.
"Alright, they've passed," Jenna announced, relief clear in her voice. "Let's move and stay quiet."
As we crept through the dimly lit corridors, I couldn't help but marvel at the resilience and expertise of my newfound allies. Together, we had overcome countless obstacles and ventured further into the heart of the AI system than anyone had ever dared.
The question lingered: would it be enough to save my daughter? I didn't know. What about the other missing people? How many of the missing persons in this city were because the corporation pursued power? I didn't know, but if I had to guess, most of them. If I didn't know better, they used these people to train their AI system, but I had no proof. At least none at the moment.
"Carro, I've found a blind spot in their security coverage. It's not much, but it could prove enough," Max whispered excitedly, pointing to a small alcove in the hallway. "We can hide there while you create a diversion."
A diversion? What the hell did that mean? Time to put my creativity to use, and fast.
"Good idea, Max." My fingers danced across my handheld hacking device, programming a false alarm to trigger in a distant section of the building. "This should buy us some time."
I hope!
"Alright, team," I said as the others joined Max and me in the alcove. "Stay low and stay quiet. Once they're gone, we'll make our move."
As the blare of sirens echoed through the complex, we braced ourselves against the wall, hearts pounding. Moments later, a squad of heavily armed security personnel rushed past our hiding spot, oblivious to our presence.
"Nice work, Carro," Jenna praised, her voice barely audible. "Now, let's get moving. We don't have much time."
"Agreed." I nodded, leading the way as we continued to navigate the labyrinthian corridors.
Suddenly, Jenna froze, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the holographic display. "Carro… you need to see this."
"What?" I stammered, peering over her shoulder. The sight that greeted me sent a chill down my spine. A live feed showed Malcolm Greer, one of the corporation's high-ranking officials, working with his hackers. It made sense that a high-ranking CEO would eventually reveal his involvement, at least not publicly.
"Greer… I should've known," I spat, fury rising like a tidal wave. The thought of this man exploiting the system we were fighting against filled me with a burning rage. My rage died and turned to dread, which became mere static. This should've been obvious, Carro. No high-level corporate crony will is a good person. They don't get to where they're at with sunshine and rainbows.
"Look," Jenna pointed out, her voice shaking. "He's stealing sensitive data, and it seems like he's been manipulating the stock market, too."
"Damn him," Max growled. "He's just as corrupt as the rest of them."
"Stay focused. This shouldn't surprise any of us. Corporations are known for this. They keep us manipulated by driving us into poverty so we stay weak and can't fight back," I urged, swallowing the bile that rose in my throat. "We need to find my daughter and expose Greer's crimes. None of this ends until we bring them all down."
"Right," Jenna agreed, her determination matching my own. "Let's keep moving. We're not done yet."
The revelation hit me like a punch to the gut, leaving me momentarily breathless. I clenched my fists, my heart pounding furiously in my chest. It wasn't just about evading security and finding my daughter; we also had to gather evidence against Greer.
"Carro," Max said, snapping me back to reality. "We need a plan. We can't just blindly charge in."
"Right," I agreed, trying to suppress my anger. "Jenna, you monitor Greer's activities. We need to know what he's up to. Max, let's focus on finding any hidden backups of the data he's stealing. If we can recover them, we might expose his crimes."
"Got it," Jenna murmured, her fingers flying across the holographic display as she tracked Greer's digital movements.
"Stay sharp, everyone," I warned, the weight of our mission pressing down on me. "This just got a lot more complicated."
As we continued our infiltration, the tension in the air thickened. Every step I took was dangerous, the stakes higher than ever. Focus, Carro. This isn't the time to make mistakes.
"Carro," Jenna whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. "I've found something. Greer's been communicating with someone outside the corporation. I think they're working together."
"Can you trace the connection?" I asked, my mind racing with possibilities. Who could Greer be colluding with? And how deep did this corruption go?
"I'm working on it," she replied, biting her lip in concentration. "Not sure how well I can do it, but I'll try. His people are using a lot of sophisticated encryption."
"Keep me updated," I said.
"Carro, I found a backup server," Max reported. "It's heavily encrypted, but I think I can crack it. Maybe."
"Good," I nodded, knowing the needed evidence could be within our grasp. "Do it quickly and quietly. We can't afford to alert Greer or security."
"Understood. I'll keep it subtle," Max said, his fingers dancing over his console as he broke through the encryption.
As Jenna and Max worked tirelessly, I couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. This mission was becoming more dangerous by the second, and the thought of my daughter still out there, somewhere, loomed heavily in my mind. Was she still in this building, or did Greer have her somewhere else? Too many questions for me to answer.
"Carro, I've traced the connection," Jenna announced, her voice tense. "It leads to another corporation. One of their biggest competitors. It seems like they're conspiring together."
Damn it! The web of corruption was even more tangled than I had initially suspected. But we couldn't afford to be overwhelmed now. My daughter's life and our fight against these oppressive corporations were at stake.
"Alright, here's the plan," I said, breathing deeply to steady myself. "Jenna, gather all the evidence on Greer's communications with this other corporation. Send it to Mira, if possible, so she can start analyzing it. Max, finish cracking that backup server and download everything you find, if possible. Once we have enough proof, we'll expose their crimes and bring them down."
"Let's do this," Jenna replied, determination blazing.
"Agreed," Max added.
While following our plan, I felt like we were on a tightrope. A slight mistake could ruin everything. But failure wasn't an option, not when so much was on the line. As long as we had each other's backs and kept our wits about us, we could overcome any obstacle, including the treacherous Malcolm Greer. Fuck, I could only hope. This tightrope was mighty thin, and my balance sucked.
I focused on tracing Greer's digital footprint. Jenna intercepted the rival corporation's communications while Max and I gathered information from secure servers. One careless line of code would expose us. Subtle was an understatement.
"Max, we need to find a way in without alerting their security system," I said, my eyes scanning through lines of code. "The moment they detect an intrusion, our advantage is gone."
"Already on it, Carro," Max responded. "I've found a backdoor into one of their less-guarded servers. We should be able to access some crucial data from there. It might not give us everything we need, but it's better than nothing."
"Good job," I replied. "Let's make this quick and clean."
As I delved deeper into the system, I couldn't help but marvel at the architecture of the AI. It was like navigating a labyrinth of glowing neon circuits, each pathway leading to another layer of encryption and security measures. But we were relentless in our pursuit, using every trick to bypass the countless firewalls and biometric scanners. Would it be enough? Maybe. This could also be a gigantic trap, as Lila knows I'm a hacker and could've warned the corporations about this.
"Carro, I've intercepted a message from Greer," Jenna said, her voice barely concealing her excitement. "He's discussing a major financial manipulation scheme with his contact in the other corporation."
"Save it and keep digging," I instructed, my heart pounding. This was the evidence we needed.
"Carro, their internal security is stepping up," Max warned. "We have to tread lightly or risk being discovered."
"Understood," I said. "We can't let them catch us now."
While Max and I continued our infiltration, I felt the weight of the risks we were taking. One wrong move could trigger a cascade of alarms, bringing down corporate security forces and Greer's countermeasures upon us. It was a constant game of cat and mouse, with higher stakes than ever.
"Carro, their security is closing in on our location," Max whispered urgently. "We need to move."
"Go ahead, I'll cover our tracks," I replied, fingers flying across the keyboard as I deleted traces of our presence.
"Alright, I've found another hiding spot," Max said after a tense moment. "We should be safe here for now. We can't stay here forever. We need to leave."
"Good. Jenna, any progress?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
"Almost there," she responded, her voice strained. "I just need a little more time to gather all the evidence."
"Stay sharp, both of you," I cautioned. "We're playing a dangerous game, but the end is in sight. We must stop Greer and find my daughter, no matter the cost."
As I raced through the digital labyrinth, my heart pounded. The stakes kept getting higher. Greer's lies and tricks were getting worse, and they could ruin our mission and all our hard work.
Greer was a heavy hitter in the corporate world. Still, I did not know if his actions involved my daughter's kidnapping or anyone else's. The thin ice got thinner, and an icy shiver ran through my body. He could also know we're here. Why else would he be here? How many CEOs spend time at the bottom levels with their hackers? Something isn't right. Trap?
"Carro, I've got it!" Jenna's voice interrupted my thoughts. "I found the data we need to expose Greer's activities. We have to get this out there."
"Good work," I said, calming my voice. "Max, can you create a diversion? We must buy some time to get out of here and back to base."
"Already on it," Max replied. "Just give me a moment… There! That should keep their security forces busy for a while."
"Perfect," I muttered, focusing on the task at hand. As the three of us worked in unison, our combined skills turned the tide in our favor. It was time to bring down the curtain on Greer's twisted game. At least, I hoped it would. Everything ran too smoothly, and we got more information than I expected. Too easy, or were we that good?
"Guys, I've located a backdoor that will let us broadcast this information directly to the public," I announced triumphantly. "Once the truth is out there, Greer won't be able to hide any longer."
"Carro, are you sure about this?" Jenna asked hesitantly. "It's going to send shockwaves through the entire corporation. Everything will change."
"Everything needs to change," I replied. "We must stop him now, or countless more people will suffer. And I need to find my daughter."
"Alright," Jenna consented, her voice filled with newfound determination. "Let's do it."
With a last flurry of keystrokes, I started the broadcast. Within moments, the incriminating data flooded the public domain, exposing Greer's illicit activities for all to see. This would rock the corporation to its core. Hopefully, if the PR did an awful job, their power structures would crumble. As hopeful as I was, doubts lingered in my head. They've survived worse.
"Carro, we did it!" Max exclaimed, his voice filled with delight. "The truth is out there. Greer's finished."
"Thank you, both of you," I said, thick with emotion. "But our fight isn't over yet. We still need to find my daughter. Plus, there's no way to be sure we hurt these people. Remember, they have better PR than anyone on this planet. A politician doesn't even have their skill at covering up this sort of thing."
"Of course, Emily is still in danger," Jenna replied, her voice gentle. "We'll be with you every step of the way."
As we exited the corporate building and prepared for our next battle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of hope mixed with dread. Everything was too easy. We didn't walk into a trap, but it made me curious how quickly we got this data. Maybe I'm overthinking everything. Perhaps you're not, Carro. There's more to this than Emily and Greer.
How much more was the question? Releasing the information was easy. Was it enough to spark a rebellion and bring down the world's largest corporations, or were we given information to lead us far from the truth? It was too easy, and I knew it. This was going to bite us in the ass.
