Fantasy Mystery Paranormal
3 min read

A jeweled box arrives from an ancient world, and one curious soul dares to lift its lid.

I can’t recall whether it was during my junior or senior year of high school when I first discovered the captivating world of Greek and Roman mythology. What I do remember is how instantly I was drawn in by those enchanting tales. Mythical heroes, gods and goddesses, epic adventures, intricate family dynamics, and stories of star‑crossed lovers bewitched me from the start.

Among my favorites were the stories of Psyche and Cupid, the mysterious Underworld, the quest for the Golden Fleece, the legendary Ulysses, the infamous Trojan War, and the enigmatic Pandora’s Box.

This year on Halloween Eve, I find myself once again returning to the ancient story of Pandora’s Box. Why do I keep rereading it, time and again?

I hope I am not descending into the depths of insanity.

Two weeks before Halloween Day in 2025, I was engrossed in rereading the Greek myth of Pandora’s Box when the ringing telephone interrupted my thoughts. On the other end was an unexpected job offer from the Archaeology Department at Underworld University here in Washington, D.C. Despite having no experience in archaeology, I accepted, intrigued by the mystery of why they had chosen me.

At the peculiar request of my new supervisor, Mr. Zimmerman, I began my job on Halloween Eve and worked overtime well into the night.

Mr. Zimmerman, a seasoned archaeologist, had just returned from a fruitful excavation in Greece, where he unearthed numerous artifacts from a buried city.

Alongside my colleagues, Edward and Philip, we were tasked with meticulously matching each relic to its corresponding entry in the Field Journal, which detailed the origin and significance of every artifact.

Naturally, our curiosity was piqued. We were eager to uncover the treasures discovered during Mr. Zimmerman’s expedition.

As we cross‑referenced the relics with the journal entries, our eyes fell upon a dazzling box adorned in hues of blue and gold. Its label proclaimed it to be the ancient Pandora’s Box, and warned, “Do Not Open.”

Our curiosity surged, yearning to uncover the truth behind the classical myths.

But the question remained: who would dare to open the box?

Philip, still burdened by the consequences of a foolish blunder that had ignited a blaze when he carelessly discarded a cigarette filter tip, refused to risk further wrath from Mr. Zimmerman.

Edward, mindful of his frequent tardiness, his careless errors, and the stern reprimands he had received, was equally cautious. He declined as well, unwilling to provoke our supervisor any further.

“I, Pandora, shall open the box. I am curious to discover its contents, especially since it was bestowed upon me by the mighty God Zeus!”

Startled, both Edward and Philip stared at me in disbelief as I boldly announced my true identity, revealing a name that neither had ever heard me speak.

Pandora lifted the lid of the box, and a swirling cloud of black smoke billowed forth, filling the room before escaping through the open window.

Within the ancient box resided evil spirits.

The menacing disease, the coronavirus (COVID19), escaped and plagued the Earth.

“I, Pandora, am bound to an eternal curse — condemned to bear the weight of my own curiosity as the years, decades, and centuries slip by… trapped in the same unending cycle each Halloween Night.”

Edward and Phillip watched in awe as Mia declared the terrible curse that had haunted her for centuries.
