PRINCE ESCALUS ; THE CLEANER
Taking on the metaphorical role of Prince Escalus , the protagonist must tackle dealing with the aftermath of the break up between two mural friends.
PROLOGUE
The sun rises full of
hope and potential
Two freindship groups both alike in dignity ,
In gritty Brid where we our story takes place ,
As originally one whole collective in which ,
A relationship between two members die.
Creating conflict in morality among the mates ,
Internal struggle and ethical dilemma ,
Leaving three emissaries in the in between of the two divides…
ACT ONE
I didn’t have the moral compass unlike others , to completely abandon a friend.
The other group sees him as the devil but the question is , was he ?
There’s his side , her side and the actual truth.
I was the first to reach out.
I picked up the pieces the others left behind , loose threads and unresolved questions.
I was the first on the case.
To the bar with him ! I say a pint -
drinking and drinking ,
talking and talking ,
speculating and speculating,
"Your the only one here for me.”
…It stuck out to me.
I still need to be 50/50 !
I still need to be balanced !
I still need to be diplomatic !
I still need to be there for both sides !
ACT TWO
Two more joined to be emissaries later stuck within this role of the in between of two groups.
We are not spies , we are friends.
We are not on anyone’s side.
We are trying to protect your images.
We are trying to respect your privacy.
Yes we let stuff slip , it happens all the time accidentally yes we are sorry…(for stabilising the problem you directly contributed to the making of)
Like the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet though the star crossed lovers don’t die - the dynamic of the whole friendship group does.
Both sides are obsessed the other side is wrong , is sinister , is lying ,
is corrupt , is nasty ,is spiteful , is controlling , is disloyal ,
Is pure. undiluted. evil.
ACT THREE
Can’t you remember.
Can’t you remember?
CANT YOU REMEMBER!
You were all friends that laughed , joked , walked along the pier , went on days out and sat in the sand without a care in the world other than pure friendship
The sun shining brightly.
How could it have gone so far gloomy? How could it have come to grey skies , cold bitter wind and ice ?
Not being able to see through
the mist and fog
Unlike us three emissaries.
The sun setting darkly.
The sun will never rise again for the friendship to be whole.
Only the ghosts of our memories can bathe in that same sunlight hereafter…
My mind repeats and repeats.
EPILOGUE
Two once lovers both alike in dignity.
In a grimy seaside town where our narrative took place.
The relationship broke up in a
facade of deception ,
it’s vase counterpart smashed all over the floor.
I find myself picking up the pieces , I find myself the one holding the broom and sweeping the mess.
cracks ,
fragments ,
shards ,
fractures ,
I stare at.
Why am I the cleaning staff tasked with the duty of this all for a vase and a relationship that is not mine?
I did not break it.
Just a bystander.
If it was Romeo and Juliet ,
I’d be Prince Escalus
For it certainly feels like a Shakespearean tragedy.
It was the
minority
vs
the majority.
It was the
open minded
vs
closed minded.
It was the
lack of responsibility
vs
the call to responsibility.
Why I find myself still not looking
at a clean floor despite scrubbing and brushing for days , weeks , months-
I do not know…
That is the end of PRINCE ESCALUS ; THE CLEANER . Thanks for reading.
