"Project Ville" | Fiction

In a distant land, a young woman named Mia resided in a neighborhood known as the Housing Projects, located across the Anacostia River, far from the influential and affluent in Washington, D.C. Mia longed for love and dreamed of marrying a kind-hearted husband. She aspired to escape the projects, a place plagued by the darkness of the drug trade. Secretly, she chronicled her experiences and observations in journals, hoping to share her story with the world one day.

Mia affectionately referred to her community as “Project Ville.”

In her eyes, the world was a battleground of good versus evil. Within Project Ville, the villains were the drug dealers, while the heroes were the devout churchgoers. The antagonists of Project Ville were the warlocks, witches, and sorcerers who lingered at every corner. They peddled magical concoctions of angel dust, wacky weed, and cannabis to those bold enough to indulge. The faithful members of the community sought to rescue souls and prayed fervently to banish the warlocks and witches from their midst.

As the churchgoers prepared for an upcoming revival, aiming to redeem the villains of Project Ville, Mia yearned to join them. However, she lacked a proper dress and shoes to match the attire of churchgoers, causing her hopes of attending the revival to fade away.

To Mia’s amazement, her Aunt Evelyn arrived in a white VW Tiguan. Her aunt, who knew all of Mia’s secrets and dreams, had a surprise in store.

Aunt Evelyn presented Mia with a large shopping bag. Inside were a green linen sheath dress, a shawl, a black hat, black patent leather pumps, and a matching purse, everything Mia needed for the church revival and properly dressed when inside of God's sacred sanctuary.

Overwhelmed, Mia asked, “How did you know I wanted to attend the revival?” Aunt Evelyn replied, “Sweetheart, it’s time for you to be saved. When Christ Jesus enters your life, you’ll find joy, and He will help you leave the housing projects. Have faith that He can do anything and remember that He rose from the dead to give us eternal life in Heaven.” Mia responded with conviction, “I believe Jesus is real!”

Aunt Evelyn handed Mia the keys to the Tiguan, telling her she could use the car until midnight, as she needed to be on the road to return to New York City by then.

Mia donned her new church outfit, tucking a homemade business card, her cell phone, compact mirror, and lipstick into the elegant purse, ready to step into a new chapter of hope and possibility.

At the church revival, Mia was swept away by the vibrant energy of the congregation, all united in their praise of Christ Jesus. A profound sense of happiness filled her troubled soul, and tears streamed down her face, seemingly without reason. It was her spirit rejoicing for being in God’s sanctuary, eager to worship despite the rebellious nature of her flesh.

Mia took a courageous step and was baptized in the name of Jesus!

She was eager to share the joyous news with her Aunt Evelyn that she had transitioned from darkness into the light of Christ. In the baptismal pool, Mia experienced a profound transformation; it felt as though she had died to her old self in the water, emerging renewed and filled with a sense of spiritual rebirth.

As evening fell and praise and worship services was over at the the church, a dinner was served in the basement at the church. Mia found herself seated next to a man who enthusiastically sharing how Christ Jesus had blessed him with a new job as a publishing editor and agent. Encouraged, Mia decided to reveal her long-held secret: she had been writing a novel inspired by her life in Project Ville with the young man.

Suddenly, the church clock struck midnight! Mia realizing the time, quickly excused herself, explaining she had to leave. The man graciously offered to walk her to her car. They hurried to the vehicle, Mia fumbling with her shawl and car keys. In the rush, one of her homemade business cards slipped from her purse. She hugged him goodnight and drove off into the night, determined to return her aunt’s car on time.

As the man made his way back to the church, he spotted Mia’s business card on the steps. Excited, he shared with a friend, “I found her business card with her cell number and home address. I must visit her home in the morning and ask if I can read her novel’s manuscript.

The morning after the church revival, Mia awoke with joy and hope, singing gospel hymns as she envisioned a future beyond Project Ville.

A knock on her door interrupted her morning reverie. To her surprise, it was the man from church. He introduced himself as Ulysses Smith. Explaining that he had found her home thanks to the business card she had accidentally dropped, he had come with a purpose. Ulysses asked if he could read her manuscript. As he read her story, he recognized its brilliance, declaring it a masterpiece. Enthusiastically, he proposed turning it into a series of books and publishing it without delay, offering Mia a chance to share her journey with the world.

Mia’s literary dream turned into reality as her book series, titled “Project Ville,” captured global attention and garnered multiple awards. Published under the pen name MZ Edwards, her gender remained a mystery, capitalizing on the perception that male authors often sell better. In the United States alone, the book sold a million copies within 72 hours, catapulting Mia to millionaire status and transforming her life forever.

Ulysses, who managed and promoted Mia’s work, found his success in the process. Financially secure and recognized as a leading expert in the literary world, he became a prominent publishing editor and agent. The success of Mia’s books not only brought him fame but also solidified a mutually beneficial partnership. Together, they each played a crucial role in the other’s rise to prominence.

After a year of working together, Ulysses proposed to Mia, and she joyfully accepted.

Ulysses became Mia’s Prince Charming, and together they built a life filled with love and happiness in the upscale neighborhood of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Far removed from the challenges of Project Ville, they embraced their new beginning.

And so, Mia and Ulysees lived happily ever after!

Meanwhile, Project Ville underwent a miraculous transformation. The community was now vibrant with churchgoers, and those who once walked the paths of darkness as warlocks and witches had found salvation in the name of Christ Jesus.
