prompt ‘you wake up as someone else’

Action Fantasy Thriller
3 min read

mistakenly thought i needed publish after the deadline :( very short (hopefully exciting) story about the first milestone in a new life told from first person perspective - mild horror themes

working title: Chastity eats

At 10:15(pm) i wake up I feel sick at what I have to do, I should have done it last night in the rush but the rush ran short. I felt cold & detached, absent from the act. Tonight is only gonna be worse. I'm glad my new friends left me to finish it last night, I don’t need witness to my fumbles of nerves. This would be so much easier if I could see the man as what he is; prey, not some wounded animal getting cruelly agitated by every moment my instinct fails to finish him off. He & I are one and the same, stuck in a form of limbo, not quite alive not fully dead. This will be the night we both die but I will live on. First I need to check he is actually still alive though. I walk downstairs & put my ear to the heavy door… I'm not sure I hear anything, the stench of rich iron blood fills my nose. I don’t know if the blood will liberate me, it surely can’t be that easy otherwise i could have just shared a kill, It must be the act itself or taking it from something live. “Ohh” comes a faint moan. I'm tense but not scared, it gives me grim determination. This is the first of many times I will have to act humanly & with initiative, I'm only mournful he had to spend a day alone in fear & in pain. Through the keyhole I see him faced away on the floor. silently I turn the lock, the door makes no noise as I open it but he’s already sensed me, his body is rock still & so tense it might shatter. Gently I creep towards him, theres no good drawing it out any further. But as I reach the point where I'm nearly standing over him I am torn by indecisiveness. If I don't get a good fatal latch on his neck it would be natural for him to try to get away, it could be very awkward. It would be awful if he stress-struggled to break free from the bite & we had to go through it again. As I take a step closer I am amazed he hasn’t moved, I guess he wants the same as me smothering clean something routine where he can skip any more fight flight fear chase. Now crouching over him in this intimate moment I breath out my last breath as a mortal & bear my teeth to sink in… when out of nowhere he twists his round little face looks at me with desperation & out comes a flailing hand of tinned beans catching me right above the eye. It’s chipped bone I'm sure. Only passively am I aware of his weighty frame lolloping out of the room. I'm loosing conciseness drifting off to the dull thuds & crashes of his clumsy escape. tonight he lives & I starve never to become full.
