Love reaching across space and time.

Quantum Entanglement

In a haze of confusion and fear, David struggled to get understanding of where he was. Rubbing his eyes, the details of the room suddenly began to clear. Sitting on the edge of a foreign bed he discovered the motel room he had found himself in. The room itself was void of light, being only vaguely illuminated by artificial lighting from the balcony that had now made itself known.
He got up and walked out into the night air, grasping the railing for support surveyed the commotion from below. Endless strings of lights hung from the many different balconies around him, to light up the festival that was happening far below him. People laughing, speaking in high pitched voices, singing and the sounds of games being played and won rose into the atmosphere.
In these situations, this would be the vantage point that he would almost always find himself. Too anxious to get involved in it. Too insecure of how people would see him or judge him. Far above, and removed from life, snuggled in the embrace of crippling fear. It was safer up here.
Soaking all this in, David with a jolt discovered he was not alone on the balcony. To his left he looked, squinted and adjusted his eyes to find a girl only inches from him. He looked at her as she looked at him. The shadows blurred out the specific lines and details of her face. He found himself nervous, which was a feeling he was very familiar with. He saw her face change into a smile and in her eyes something familiar. She took his hand before he was aware of it. He felt peace and comfort. The electrical current he felt from her touch nearly knocked him off his feet and lifting him up at the same time. Assurance, confidence and love filled his body and mind like he was discovering something he never knew existed. Pure love radiated around her. He felt his fear fall off of him and replaced by this missing piece of himself he never knew he needed to feel whole.
In a blink of an eye, he found himself transported. They were now down on the ground among the festival goers, still hand in hand. Holding on to it like a lifeboat in a stormy sea.

David opened his eyes again. Awakened by the sound of his brother knocking on his bedroom door telling him to get his butt out of bed and ready for school. David wept silently that what he just experienced was only a dream, and fear, anxiety and darkness was once again his sole companions.
But deep in his being he knew it was more than a dream made up of mere wishful thinking. As the months passed, he found himself looking around himself more and more. Maybe she was just around the next corner. Maybe if he went left instead of right she would be there. But she never was.
He knew that what he had experienced was his soulmate. But as the years went on he spent less and less time looking for her, and more time living for her. Or at least the idea of her and the man he knew he could one day be. A man he could be for her and not only because of her. And one day they would dance together under those same lights that looked like the soul of a thousand fireflies.
And all because on one cold March night her soul reached across time and space to touch his, in his time of need. When his soul was screaming for her, and she heard it.
