Recovering from self harm

I hope this helps anyone who needs it or has self harmed in the past. I actually published this book under my real name... However I am thinking of writing another book on the topic

Disclaimer = The views and ideas written in this book are not a replacement for a therapist or counseller, if you are struggling with your mental
health please make the time to see a certified professional that you can talk to. This book is meant as an additional support system to validate
 readers and provide additional insight.

Foreword

I am not an expert and I am not a psychologist and though I am a mental health first aider and community care worker I am currently in recovery as a self harmer. I am not going to lie and pretend that my demons still don’t lie dormant within me and I have to keep my urges under control. In my
experiences of recovery I have had more luck from talking to others who face similar demons as I do especially if I see them as someone who has
their life in order. I am a survivor with lived experience and physical and mental scars and I feel on the off chance someone comes across my book I may be able to help them out. I have tried to make this book as accessible and as easy to read as possible and my target audience is anyone who
is currently self harming or wants to help someone who is.

This is an informal book, my writing style may come across as candid as I write what has helped me and this is not a book that endorses self harm as a coping mechanism. There are no photographs of my scars or blood or “ideas” to carry out self harm because such content is triggering to me
so may be triggering to readers.

I have tried to make this book very easy to read and helpful with links to sources and applications that really helped me, so hopefully they benefit you as a reader.

This is a very triggering topic for some readers and as a result I have included a brief summary of what will be included in each chapter so you are
able to read comfortably at your own pace.

Chapter One- Why? A holistic and self love approach.
- A deeper look at why we do it, it is ultimately an act of self hatred, anger, pain and loneliness
- What does your body really need? What does your soul need?
-If you absolutely want to do it I can’t stop you but there are safer alternatives
-The power of communication,

Chapter Two- If you want to stop I have 100% belief in you
- Looking at self harm as a coping mechanism rather than a crime that is not something to be ashamed of.
-You are not a bad person if you are finding it hard to stop, surround yourself with the right people and please don’t be cruel to yourself
-Learning about your triggers, do you have thought processes that might set you off or do certain events in your life bring on urges?
-TRIGGER WARNING- Shame and silence literally kill us/the dangers.

Chapter Three- You are not a bad person, self harm is dangerous but it does not make you a bad person and it is not something to be ashamed of.
-Let’s admit it, we all have thought about it or have tried it and some of us find it addictive.
-Let’s shake up the stigma, the more people talk about it the more we can help others
-You deserve good things, if you self harm you are clearly someone with a gift and high empathy and you are able to bring good into this world.

Chapter Four - What may work, things that may give you that “rush” in a productive way
-Donating blood, this is what helped me personally but may not be for everyone. Donating blood was what actually made me stop and have
something to look forward to and to be eligible I had to be in perfect health.

Chapter Five - Your new self care ritual
-How a ritual can help you start to love and nourish your mind and body, what do you find most relaxing and why?
-You deserve to surround yourself with the good things, make yourself a self love box.
-Remove temptations if you need to, explore your senses in other ways.

Chapter Six- CalmHarm App
-This app is specifically designed for anyone struggling with self harm and involves practical activities that could be completed to beat the urges.

Chapter Seven - Relapse? This doesn’t signify failure, try another way or up your self care game
-A relapse does not mean that all your progress has been lost, it just means it is time to try again.
-If you beat it once, you can beat it again. Sometimes it takes many shots and many attempts.
-I write I am “recovering” because I still have urges and every day I commit to my healing and peace.

Without any further ado, it is time to get started.

I would advise reading this book in a place where you feel safe and comfortable, grab yourself a nice warm blanket and cup of tea. If you have pets or a loved one to support you through this please do, please stop reading at any time something may be triggered in you. The last thing I want is my readers to feel upset in any way and personal feedback is welcome, that being said I have very carefully crafted this book and written as clearly as I can so you as a reader are aware of what will be covered in each chapter.

Chapter One- Why? A holistic and self love approach

This chapter is intended to help us understand why we self harm and will hopefully be a good guide for anyone who is searching for answers and
seeking understanding. If you are an amazing person currently supporting a loved one who is self harming I hope this chapter clarifies things.

A deeper look at why we do it, it is ultimately an act of self hatred, anger, pain and loneliness

There may be many reasons why someone may feel compelled to self harm so the reason why means different things to different people. For some it may be a way of transferring emotional pain to physical pain, but the problem here is that the body produces hormones that trick the mind into
thinking that the pain is actually good, and it can become addictive.

For some people it may be about control, the best way I can explain this is that if someone feels like they cannot control what is happening in their
personal lives or that they do not feel in control of their own reactions or emotions it could be extremely tempting to self harm as a grounding
technique. As mentioned previously the problem is that it can be very dangerous, in a heightened state one may slip and cause more damage than
intended or it could lead to getting more reckless each time.

It may be a punishment thing, it could be a reaction to not feeling good enough and I need to stress that not just kids and teenagers harm but adults do as well and there is a bizzare stigma that adults cannot talk about their experiences because they are ashamed of it.

It is almost always a coping mechanism and not because someone wants attention or that they are threatening to take their lives (if you are feeling suicidal I want you to seek urgent help, tell your friends and family or anyone you need to right now and to stop reading). Either way, self harm is
communication of great pain and trauma that is too strong to be spoken aloud, so it it important to channel the pain and trauma into something
 beautiful.

From my experiences it got worse over time the more I tried to suppress it, as soon as I recognizable why I had become dependent on the quick
chemical release in my brain i found it easier to overcome. From there it was about changing my coping mechanisms and practicing different
strategies to get the same chemical reaction without hurting my body.

What does your body really need? What does your soul need?

Our bodies have a strange capacity for muscle memory, we tend to internalize and remember things that feel good or seem to work for us. What we crave isn’t always what we need right now in that moment. For example craving sugar actually means that you are craving touch and connection
and the feel good hormone, this was something I learned from my therapist.

If you want to feel physical pain, you have that right to make the choice for yourself. If you are old enough to get a tattoo or a piercing that might do it and you will be in the safe hands of a trained professional. If you are school age it might help to ask your parents if you can get a piercing or if not a punching bag that you can take your anger out on. Sometimes going to the gym and having an intense session will leave you with the same
endorphins that self harm would but only feeling more powerful and without the self hatred. In fact, physical exercise is a way healthier alternative
or even finding a time and an excuse to go for a walk even if it is just for five minutes.

I’ll say the same routine stuff that kids shows have preached to us and we know as adults, exercise, sleep, eating properly blah blah blah
. Sometimes we don’t always have the spoons for that, when we are feeling crappy we may not be motivated to cook, or do the dishes and at this
point it is OK to ask for help if you feel you are not coping. You would do the same for someone you loved right?

Frozen meals are magic when you feel low and tired, usually nutrients are still in the packaging and make for a somewhat healthier meal than
nothing at all. It’s about paying attention to what your body is feeling and how your body is reacting to people, situations and what your body is
 telling you.

I remember what it feels like to have a instrument of ouch in your hand, I remember that nonplussed feeling, that disassociation and I ask that if
that feeling comes on, please do what you need to do to keep yourself safe. That disassociated feeling is telling you that something isn’t right and
you can control how you handle that feeling even if it may take a few times to understand. Please don’t be hard on yourself either, you can stop if
 you want to.

It’s about what works for you, are you a physical person who likes to always be moving, are you creative and do you like keeping busy with projects? This is a very personal thing and what works for you works for you, anything that will keep you feeling good about yourself and able to look after
yourself and appreciate your life may be enough to get you out of a dark place.

If you are into the visual element of seeing marks, perhaps practice painting or make up, who knows you may develop a passion for make up artistry and get really good at it. Perhaps you are a writer, there are many forums on Reddit and Quora dedicated to recovering folk who are trying to get
better, in fact one of the first messages will be a Google message asking you if you need professional help.

Whenever you are feeling out of control do not be afraid to call for help, or even make an appointment to see a specialist, there are programs
available for discounts and free online programs and applications that can be installed that are a supportive community.

If you absolutely want to do it I can’t stop you but there are safer alternatives

As someone who still fights the urge every day and has to make choices every single day to avoid falling back to the trap I can totally understand that you may still need to feel something. If you do, all I ask is that you find an alternative, preferably one that doesn’t break the skin. If you absolutely have to break the skin please think about it first, think about what the urge is and find a way to distract yourself. Do you want to cut? Or do you want to scream obscene things into a pillow, watch a comedy, go for a run or call for help?

If you are very determined to see a mark, perhaps try drawing on yourself with red ink instead, you can buy washable markers and fake washable
blood if it is the sight of the blood you feel you need to see.

Perhaps it is actually some kind of physical sensation you crave, you can buy “weighted blankets” at  a reasonable price from stores and a quick
Google search will tell you where you can get them. Weighted blankets mimic the sensation of a hug or body pressure and tend to make someone
feel more relaxed and sleep easier. If you are over eighteen you can hire a professional cuddler to cuddle you, this is a strictly non sexual service
with professional boundaries in place but it might help. Perhaps you might benefit from a massage, some remedial massages or Chinese Massages can be quite rough and painful at times but it is a good pain that unlocks muscle tightness and will leave you feeling like you are floating. I still get Chinese Massages and all you need to do is walk in, they sit you down and the prices are always very reasonable and staff are well trained. The
massage tends to “hurt” more than be relaxing but you will be in the hands of trained professionals and may still get your high without harming
 yourself.

If it is the scratchy and pain feeling you crave lightly hit the part of your body you want to cut a few times, not too hard but hard enough to see the
flushed pink colour. Lightly scratch with a pen, a blunt knife (this strategy still works for me) and you will find the area actually feels very sensitive
and tender and you will “trick” your body into thinking it has been cut. If that voice is telling you to cut deeper (yes, this is a real thing we all
experience) please stop and try something else because it may mean that strategy wont work.

Another thing that helped me was actually to hold an ice cube or leaving it on the site of my body I wanted to cut. After a few minutes you will find
the ice will feel very uncomfortable and once again your body will be reacting to the pain and you may get the high you are after without causing
any damage or danger. As you feel the ice cube on your skin try to think what you are trying to get out from the experience and how you feel, do you feel calm, better, grounded?

Giving blood really helped me, in fact to be eligible for giving blood you cannot have any cuts on your body and you need to be healthy and fit and in a good place physically and mentally. I might stress that the concept of giving blood is about saving lives, to save a life you need to be feeling fit,
happy and healthy which is an awesome thing to work up to. In fact, you may even be able to give plasma on a regular basis. As a young woman
prone to anemia I only give blood every three months and that was what helped me, I realized it was better to give life and I would get the same
high as I would if I cut myself and happened to be in the hands of trained professionals. I actually cover this in more detail a bit further on.

Please do not be ashamed if you are not ready to stop, it doesn’t mean you failed it just means that this time your demons won but there is next
 time.

The power of communication

As humans we always have a lot of things on our mind, perhaps we are stressed about bills, work, family, relationship, feeling worthy of love and a
cceptance, our body image among other things. We don’t always know how to ask for help and we may find it difficult to communicate our needs to others.

People might not always be able to see if you are struggling, because we are all immersed in our own lives and battles and as cliche as it sounds we all need to be a little kinder to each other and ourselves. This does not mean you are not loved and not cared for, but rather people can easily get
overwhelmed in their own lives and as a result may not be able to spot the signs that someone is struggling with their mental health until it is too
 late.

If you want to come out about your self harm troubles please do and please express yourself in whatever way you need to whether that be in a
letter, on social media, a chat or a private message. When it comes to asking for help there is no right way or wrong way if it is going to stop you
from going to a dark place.

Chapter Two- If you want to stop I have 100% belief in you

This chapter is intended to be empowering and helpful, I want to support you during this time and I hope you have asked for help by now and feel in control to take your life back. You can do it, it is never too late to keep trying and I know how hard it can be dealing with mental health especially,
sometimes it feels like you’re drowning but you can save your own life by asking for help.

Looking at self harm as a coping mechanism rather than a crime that is not something to be ashamed of.

One thing our society needs to do is to normalize self harm as a coping mechanism and not “attention seeking behavior,” in fact this is why I am
writing this book because I am genuinely passionate about trying to stop this unhelpful stigma. If people feel supported and validated and not
written off as “crazy” or “after attention” they will be more likely to seek help.

We all cope with stress differently, some of us go to the gym, some of us take a nap, some of us pay for therapy or do yoga classes, some of us
go to boxing classes. I personally am guilty of having a serious sweet tooth and treating myself to ice cream or occasional fast food when I get the urge to cut. Any of our vices or coping mechanisms have the ability to become an addiction if our relationship with it goes wrong. This does not
mean we have failed as people but rather we need to check whether our coping mechanism is helping us or harming us.

Self harm is really no different as an addiction, some of us find meaning and peace through sensation. I personally need to feel something
physically to feel good. We may be craving touch, body pressure, exercise or sensation and as tactile beings we like to explore these things. When
we self harm our pain receptors and pleasure receptors seem to get confused and we get end up getting addicted to the high but we
subconsciously seek a more intense feeling as it takes hold of us. This is when it becomes dangerous as we have a little voice in our head telling
us to cut deeper, bruise harder.... Trust me, I have been there and I still have to fight those urges when my triggers have been set off.

I might add I have also struggled with exercise addiction and a sweet tooth addiction, these things are all relative and I am at the point now where I am still finding that balance to ensure I am self caring and not self abusing. This stuff isn’t a sign of ethical failure as a person, just a sign that we
need to find what works for us and have insight on whether our relationships with our coping mechanism are benefiting us. These days I try and
cope in different ways, I love walking, I love the gym and I love my naps with my cats and I am unapologetic for having a nap whenever I am able to
if it means I’ll wake up feeling better. Any act of self love is self care and these things are all able to help us supercharge when we find what makes us feel our best.

You are not a bad person if you are finding it hard to stop, surround yourself with the right people and please don’t be cruel to yourself

This is the time to get your team together, especially any family member, friend or anyone who is able to be a good support system. This book is
aimed at literally anyone who self harms and I have tried to make this content applicable to children, teenagers, young adults, adults and the elderly alike because self harm may be an ongoing thing for all of us and we need to normalize talking about it. Your team could be anyone as long as they know about what you are going through and are supportive, if they make you feel worse for having your struggles and are treating you unkindly feel free to limit your exposure to them if they are hurting you or triggering you to feel worse.

Seriously there is no real way of telling who self harms anymore, most of us do it in private and are ashamed of it and go to efforts to hide it. Most
of my scars are on my upper body, stomach and thighs and to this day I am too afraid to even go swimming around anyone and I always dress in
clothes which cover them and am still in the process of accepting my scars as battle scars that i lived through and survived. I present as a shy, kind and quiet young woman and may be considered successful and happy and I have developed more confidence over the years from slowly getting
better. I know lawyers, married people, ambulance staff, care workers who self harm, so lets just say it is an issue that affects more of us than we
care to admit. Go to a busy place like the city and  look at everyone you see, each one of those people are probably fighting a battle every day that
they do not talk about no matter how happy or successful they seem to be.

Think of how you would support a family member, friend or a stranger you found out was self harming or struggling, you would probably be kind to
them and offer them empathy, support and love. So, I only hope that during this time you are able to be kind to yourself as I bet you are kind to
others.

Though professional help is always the best course of action (I cannot stress this enough) in this day and age there is a crisis on wait times and the issue of affordability so this means it might take some time to actually see a professional. This is why it helps to have your team of good people
around you who will help you feel accountable for yourself, you can check in with and go to when the urge to cut or to hurt yourself arises.

Even if you are someone who may not have many friends (confession, I was the weird art kid in school who had friends but was emotionally distant) you would have at least some support that you subconsciously prefer. Even if it may be an online group, a club you frequent, a neighbor or anyone
There has to at least be someone who has the capacity to make a positive difference in your life or at least be a friend to you.

Learning about your triggers, do you have thought processes that might set you off or do certain events in your life bring on urges?

There is always something that triggers our need to self harm, we may not always know what those triggers are because sometimes it is easier to
shut out the emotional pain that hurts more than the physical pain. We may not even know why we do it sometimes, maybe it becomes habit or a
quick go to when things get too painful for us, perhaps we do it because we want to feel something or distract ourselves for a few moments.

It usually starts off with a trigger and we may not actually notice it until we become aware of it and realize that we are not feeling too good emotionally. Perhaps you are feeling inadequate, insecure, lonely, angry, afraid, having a personal crisis, a death, trauma, maybe you are just stressed and
feeling really bad. That usually leads to the feeling of what we want to do about it, sometimes we pretend it isn’t that bad, that it will get better, that maybe it will go away. That is the point we might reach for our implement of ouch, to blindly cope with the feelings rather than sitting with them and allowing yourself to feel them.

I’m going to quickly go over some possible triggers, these are intended to try and get you thinking about what your own triggers are. I do not intend
to write this in a way to put these ideas in your head, but rather to see if there are any circumstances you may be in at this moment which are
secretly contributing to a great unhappiness that you are feeling. These are intended as a guide only and some of these have actually been
experienced by me first hand so feel free to think about your own and put them to paper. This is your time to be your own detective and it might help to write them down and to take them to a mental health professional. I am not a psychologist but I might be able to give you some ideas and
support until you are able to get to a better place with the support and professional.

Could the trigger be a person, maybe it is someone you may be interested in and that person may be treating you poorly but not allowing you to
move on? Maybe they are using you for your attention, validation and an ego boost? Maybe someone is treating you really unkindly and it might be
really hard to get away from that person because sometimes admitting someone wants to hurt us is actually the worst pain. I am a survivor of
narcissistic abuse and I was one of the lucky ones that managed to remove myself. If someone is treating you poorly and like crap, I know it is
easier said than done but please remove yourself as earliest as you can before they take too much of your soul with them and break you overtime.

Maybe the stress could be work related or school/study related? Maybe you have been working so hard and feel like you haven’t been recognized as being a hard worker. Maybe your best efforts have been ignored or maybe someone is just being a jerk to you. Maybe you might feel unhappy and not sure why in general but feel a sense of helplessness and an anxiety and just don’t know where to go or what to do.

Maybe have things just been really bad lately in general and it feels like life is just throwing you bricks after bricks and it is just getting you down? Maybe you feel triggered if you feel lonely, or rejected or forgotten in some way, if you feel like you are forgotten and that no one cares?

Maybe you witnessed something horrible? Maybe the news and the state of the world is getting you down? Who knows. I promise you that you can take the situation into your own hands as soon as you address the trigger and how it affects you.

I have noticed too much time spent on social media tends to make us feel crappy, it makes us feel inferior as we become fixated on trying to keep up appearances that stop us being authentically happy. We start placing our value on our looks and social media likes and we stop creating, stop being able to be at peace with ourselves and we compare ourselves to others. This can fuel our urges to self harm especially as we feel we are not good enough. I assure you that you are good enough, half of the photos we see online are photo shopped or professionally edited anyway.

One huge part of recovery means working out what triggers you in the first place, when you are in a heightened state emotionally and you are able
to sit with yourself and your feelings this will become a lot more easier to do. Once you have worked out what types of things are causing you pain emotionally, physically or mentally you will be closer to overcoming your demons.

I don’t know if any of my possible suggestions have helped but i certainly hope that they have helped you to find your triggers and overcome them.

My next page includes a trigger warning as I explore the dangers, seriously, this is why I am passionate about writing this stuff because when we don’t talk about this stuff we suffer and when we suffer this continues and if this continues it can get dangerous...

Please read the next section at your own risk, or even better do not read it alone if you are feeling bad about it or feel at risk of hurting yourself.

TRIGGER WARNING- Shame and silence literally kill us/The dangers.

IF YOU ARE FEELING SUICIDAL I DO NOT WANT YOU TO READ ANY FURTHER. I REPEAT. STOP READING NOW, CALL A LOVED ONE RIGHT NOW.

Please stop reading at any point you start to feel upset or stressed, this is the only section in the book that may have distressing content.

Truth is, if we keep this to ourselves and suffer alone, covering our wounds, pretending to ignore our shame as it affects us in different ways and we pretend we are not suffering and drowning and that we are OK this might actually take our lives.

You are needed here, please try and make a conscious effort to choose life every day.

You may be seeking pain to make meaning of what you are feeling, because pain and your implement of ouch may be your best friend who
understands you more than you feel anyone else does. Trust me, I have been there and I need to still to this day make a conscious effort every day not to let my demons win. That friend that you use to hurt yourself with may as well be an enemy, it will tell you to keep going, go deeper, go harder, bleed more and it wont stop until it has claimed you.

What if I told you that your “secret friend” was not a friend at all, that your implement of ouch is your biggest enemy. It will tell you to keep going, to hide, to lie, to isolate yourself and to shut yourself away from those who love you the most.

You can easily misjudge, slip and cause a more serious wound than you intended and you can cause a serious injury or even worse. I am not going
to caution anymore because it may not be that helpful at this moment however please know that self harm is dangerous. When we are in a
heightened state and especially during periods of great anger and emotional stress we can actually cause more damage to ourselves than we
planned to. We may end up becoming addicted to that high and not being able to stop until it is too late. We have major arteries and veins which
could bleed a lot more than we want them to if they are cut, please even if you are not ready to stop please avoid any fleshy veiny area for this
matter. Our skin is so shallow, so fragile.

Next time you want to cut, I want you to grab a washable marker and write all of your most beautiful qualities all over your body instead. If you need help to do this I am sure you have loved ones who would be more than happy to contribute.

Our shame can literally kill us, when we keep this to ourselves our shame will eat us alive and we are at serious risk of eventually losing our battle.
Please don’t let the shame and the secrecy win, remove your instruments of self injury, throw them in a sharps bin (you can do this anonymously)
and dispose of it. If you use other methods of injury I want you to put them away, perhaps give them to a friend who knows about your battle and
will destroy them for you.

I am going to mention briefly the night that made me stop, it made me stop because it was genuinely a very frightening event for me and I am not
writing about it in full detail because I still find it painful to remember. The night i stopped was a hot summer night, I went too deep and I misjudged , it wasn’t stopping and my neighbor had his friends over and their car was parked in my driveway. I remember crying, i ran outside and I begged my neighbor to move the car, my neighbor being the kind soul he is asked if i was OK and what happened. I remember now answering and feeling frozen in shame as the worst thoughts possible ran through my head that he would think I am insane if i told him. He moved his car and accepted i
wouldn't answer him. I had to go to a pharmacist and I remember the shame and relief I felt when the pharmacist working that night  The
pharmacist was so gentle and so kind, she took me aside in a private room, sat me down in a chair, gave me some water and tissues and asked
what I needed. She never told me what I was doing was stupid and what I was doing was dumb, she just talked to me and held my hand as I cried.

The next day I sent my neighbor a message to thank him for understanding and came out to him about my self harm. He actually revealed to me
that he had been through similar and i remember being surprised and it made us closer and strengthened our friendship.

I feel that night went as well as it could have and the reason I chose to share that experience is because it is proof that if you are struggling, people will be really kind to you and that they will notice and look after you. I hope my experience above has given you some hope because if it wasn’t for
that night I wouldn’t have stopped and I wouldn’t have realized that there is nothing to be ashamed of if you are not coping and in pain. In fact, it
made me feel more connected and thankful for my neighbors for being so kind and having good people around you, who understand you and are
thankful for you makes all the difference.

Please choose life, we all need you here. You’ve got great qualities to offer to the world, places to go, people to meet, creative ideas to explore and a world to change.

Time to swap self destruction for self nurturing. You can do this, if you have made it this far I am proud of you, you have read the hardest section of this book.

Chapter Three- You are not a bad person, self harm is dangerous but it does not make you a bad person and it is not something to be ashamed of.

You may notice a bit of a repetition here, that is repeating the concept that you are not a bad person and I hope this writing is helping you learn that you should not be ashamed. I am not a hypnotist and I struggle with negative self talk and have all my life, and I know there is a chance you my dear reader may as well

Let’s admit it, we all have thought about it or have tried it and some of us find it addictive.

I think we need to have a think about why we need to normalize talking about this stuff, seriously I have spoke to adults who may have tried an
element of self harm when they were younger. It may have been when they were in a state of anger or serious pain for their young mind to
understand how to cope and this is how it becomes a problem. Some people might try it out of curiosity and decide that physical pain doesn’t help
them personally and that doesn’t mean that they are normal and that we are freaks, it just meant that the stimulus didn’t satisfy their need.

Some of us, that first experience of pain actually does something to our brain chemistry and this is why it is never your fault. Our bodies get hooked to the feel good chemicals that our bodies actually produce during physical pain called endorphins, some people seem to be more sensitive to
others. The act of physical pain itself is not actually satisfying, no one actually enjoys pain, it is the after effect of pain that sends our endorphins to the sky. This is why after a period of self harm we might feel better, feel sleepy and relaxed because the endorphins have been triggered and in our
brains we have made that link of pain and reward. I cannot stress enough that this doesn’t make you a weird person, or messed up or strange
because some of us just seem to have that reaction whereas other people might not.

Hell, once I was at a playground with some friends being a dork and riding on one of those rockers intended for children. I was making my way off it when the thing bounced back and hit my knee hard enough to send me into a trance for at least twenty minutes. That was unintentional and not an act of self harm but an example of how my body responded to the pain. I hope that my embarrassing confession just brought a smile to your face
because that is an example of how it works, see it isn’t actually your fault that your body produces these chemicals in your brain and it feels good. There are just other things we can do to explore those chemicals without risking our lives and safety.

Oh and for the record, I am going to stay away from play equipment. I am a full grown responsible adult (snort).

Let’s shake up the stigma, the more people talk about it the more we can help others

When I posted to social media my intent to create an E-Book on this topic and asked who would like a free copy I was shocked to realize so many of my loved ones and friends reached out to me asking
for a copy. It was not my business to ask if it was for them or their loved ones but I was just thankful that people were actually seeking help about
this stuff, perhaps it is for them or someone they know. Every single person who reached out to me was someone who I have a connection or friendship to and if I found out that they had been hurting themselves in private, crying tears alone while laughing with me and pretending to be fine I
would feel concerned. I was relieved to have friends reach out to me and I write this book with the hope that this is something that they can relate to and can get them through a hard time. It just shocks me how much this issue affects the people I care about, yet it is still something considered
too taboo to talk about in a social gathering. I have since published my EBook on Kindle and this book is my hard copy version that I intended to
distribute to schools and mental health facilities.

Of all of the friends who had reached out to me about my book, I wouldn’t have ever guessed that they would have a battle with self harm and just
because I am sending them a copy of this book after I write it i do not consider it my place to ask them about it but would hope that they would
come to me if they ever needed.

Asking for help is so difficult for some people, I know so many people who are considered the strong ones, they are not used to asking for help or letting people in. Some people can ask for help a lot easier than others, some learn how to communicate and some people communicate by cutting parts of their body. If you see someone with visible cuts on their body it can be extremely confronting if you are not a self harmer. I can assure you that these people do not want attention, this is actually a way of screaming out for help, kindness and understanding and not quite knowing how to ask for that help.

If you are currently trying to love and support someone who is facing troubles with self harm, just keep loving them. You don’t have to play therapist or counseller but you can try to gently ask them if they are open to it even offer to take them there or accompany them to a session if they need.
Share your own battles if applicable, people like to be able to relate to people they respect who have been through this stuff. All you can do is love
them, support them, take them places, spend time with them, make them something creative, make them a heart felt gift or card telling them how much you love them because this is what they probably need from you.

I am an accredited mental health first aider and though I am not a mental health professional I know a few basic ideas and I am always learning and improving my skills to help and love those around me. I would highly suggest taking a mental health first aid class if you are interested, it will teach you how to spot the signs of someone who may not be coping and how to support them while keeping your own boundaries.

Sit down with them and if you are close friends ask them if you can draw for them, either on paper or over their body. Draw or write words or images that you know they love, I promise you that they will love the sentimental value of it especially if they are creative.

For a musical soul, perhaps they will benefit from a good jamming session, they can take out their anger. Maybe this person loves driving, take them for a long drive in the middle of no where (where no one is) and scream, let them join in. Primal screaming always feels good even if you feel like
you need to help them get that anger and pain out of their bodies and just let it out. It is best to be with someone for this type of activity because
they may be feeling emotionally vulnerable. There is something about screaming until it hurts and screaming until you cant scream anymore, you
 will feel so much better.

Maybe this person is physical, invite them for a run, a walk, a hike. You don’t need to talk to them about the cuts because they may be feeling very
ashamed. Just tell them kindly that you have been worried about them and have noticed that they haven’t felt themselves (it is important to note
your observations that do not relate to the injuries).

It is important not to talk about the injuries in a way that makes the person feel bad, please don’t ask them what they are doing because they may
clam right up and freeze. If they broach the subject first it is helpful to ask them if they need anything or if they are in pain or how they are feeling in themselves at this time. Try to always end time with them on a happy positive note and always tell the that they are loved.

The sooner people are able to normalize self harm as a normal (but maybe not the safest) coping mechanism the more people will be able to seek
help for it before it gets dangerous. I don’t understand who made up the concept that needing to feel a sharp and otherwise unpleasant sensation
for the warm fuzzies is wrong but it is an outdated concept that needs to change as our society is more progressive.

A lot of people who have these battles don’t talk about it because whoever started writing about it may not have experienced it themselves so
probably did not understand how someone could get addicted and dependent on the bodies chemicals to erase the psychological pain. There was
also a brief subculture around (any of my millennial readers may remember) called Emo and though I did not understand the subculture and am not versed on it it was understood that it was to do with angst, sadness, art expression and some people would willingly show their marks though it
may or may not have been as a social expectation to fit in. I didn’t understand the social group at the time but accepted it but many others didn’t so it may have been around that time that the group was misunderstood and to this day I cannot determine if it was a social expectation or a cry for
help. I do remember the people who identified as Emo as being very lovely, creative people and that was all that stood out to me.

The teenage years seem to be the most vulnerable time for self harmers though I have experienced and met very young children who self harm and i find this the most distressing as they may be too young to understand the dangers. Teenagers are more at risk because their brains are still
developing and they are at the point where they are exploring who they are, social groups and dating tend to prioritize anything else and with a lot of hormones flying around it can be a very strange time for them. Teenagers are notorious for not always being able to talk to their loved ones, they
may prefer to talk to their friends about their battles and this is a scary time for parents too as their friendship groups will either make them or
 break them.

Some people grow out of self harm and it may be a fleeting thing that they were curious about, other people like myself, something about it
becomes addictive and I have known people older than me who still struggle with it. I don’t understand why some of us have more battles than
others, we all have something we face which we don’t talk about.

My closest friendships are those that I can be apologetic with, we talk about things openly and are able to hold nothing back from each other. I do
hope you have people like that in your life my dear reader because those people make a difference.

You deserve good things, if you self harm you are clearly someone with a gift and high empathy and you are able to bring good into this world.

I’ve always had this theory that anyone who self harms is someone who has way more empathy and kindness in their spirit, someone who might take on more problems of those around them, might have the capacity to feel someones pain and not always understand how to deal with it. The ability to have kindness, patience and compassion in this world is actually a very special thing, anyone who hurts themselves to feel better has obviously been through tremendous pain alone or with very little support and clearly never wants to see anyone else go where they have.

Our world really needs more kind, sensitive souls to teach and to inspire others that at the end of the day only kindness really matters.

I work in the industries that care for others and though it is hard work emotionally I have always felt that peoples dying regrets were that they had
been unkind, that they had not been focused on their loved ones and more focused on money and status, keeping up appearances and trying to
please everyone.  This is why we need kind people in this world, there are so many angry and confused people walking this earth, they have no idea why they are so angry and what to do with that anger, they have issues of their own. Such people you can find tail gating you in traffic, honking,
being rude and saying unkind things out loud, cheating on partners because they are not honest with themselves or loved ones, bullying and being unkind. I have noticed people who self harm are usually very kind and loving souls....

Chapter Four - What may work, things that may give you that “rush” in a productive way

This chapter covers alternatives more in depth and though I have referred to these things earlier I will go into more detail in how these things can
help. I recommend doing some reading about what heals our bodies, self regulation and comfort systems and hopefully you can find something
that appeals to you. What works for me may not work for you but I have found some of these things provide the same “feel good” endorphins.

Donating blood

Donating blood is the gift of donating life, donating blood takes at least fifteen minutes though allow yourself at least an hour because you will need to fill out a health survey and have a quick health check up beforehand. If your veins are suitable you may also be able to donate plasma which you can be done on a weekly basis but takes forty five minutes. The perfect opportunity to sit back and relax and feel good about what you are doing.

Donating blood kept me healthy and turned me away from self harm because it made me look after myself better in order to be a regular donor.  As a young woman with iron deficiency anemia I had to keep on top of my iron supplements and eat a good diet to be able to give blood. It also meant that I could not self harm in any way because any cuts or wounds to the body would actually disqualify you from giving blood.

Before you give blood you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and a health assessment and prepare to answer a lot of potentially invasive questions. There is no shame or judgment in the questions and it is important to answer as honestly as you can because someones life literally depends on your honesty. You will then be taken into a small office to have your blood pressure taken by a nurse and a finger prick to test your hemoglobin levels.

Depending on whether or not you are eligible to give blood you may or may not be deferred, there are some factors which may mean your application will be rejected such as recent surgery, illness, medication or health conditions. Do not lose hope if you get knocked back, it just means that you can try something else.

I got knocked back a few times due to my low iron (which also had a strange relation to my low mood) and spent a year fighting very hard to get my iron levels back to normal to donate again. I ended up having to have an iron infusion and do not regret taking extra care of myself after that
experience and it was not somewhere I want to be again. As a result I am now diligent and try to take my iron every day and try my best to have a
 healthier diet.

I don’t know if it is just me or if anyone else experiences this but I tend to get a bit of a high from giving blood and it seems to trigger the same
endorphins in me that self harm would. I usually feel relaxed when I am reclining on the centres couches (they are the most comfiest recliners) and
look forward to giving blood because in a bizzare way it is relaxing.

I have a bizzare fascination with blood and for some reason I find watching the procedure interesting and relaxing, I see it as giving a small part of my life force to someone who may need it.

You will feel good when you give blood, knowing that your blood is going to help to save someones life and the procedure is carried about by trained professionals who will have your best interests at heart and will be very happy to meet you and talk to you. You usually will get a little snack
afterwards too in order to get your blood sugar and strength back after giving blood which is always a nice touch.

Making yourself to do lists

I’ve found creating to do lists to be very helpful, it boosts the reward endorphin in your brain when you can create a task, complete the task and
visually mark it off of your list. You can start small if that is easier and to try to do something that will make you feel a bit better about yourself.

It is important to only stick to doing things at your own pace and not to put too much pressure on yourself and to be mindful of your energy levels,
physical capacity and general mood for that day. Maybe start small, even if it is something like do the dishes, create a garden, send emails or do a
job application. You’ll find the more you do it the more you will feel empowered to do other things and to keep at the lists.

Over time you may find that you might move on to more ambitious tasks which may require larger amounts of energy, time or mental resources but
it is important to work yourself up to stretching your capacity. It can easily become a habit, and become a good habit at that and I have found
planning my day and intended tasks has given me a much better overall focus.

Lists may not be for everyone, some people might get anxiety with following lists and might want to try another strategy and that is OK. Some
people might feel like they have failed if they haven’t completed a job and not completing something doesn’t mean failure, it just means to try
another way. It is OK to start small and to discontinue the idea if it is not working out properly, it’s about whatever works for you.

Alternatively it is also a good idea to have a nap or nothing days where you may just want to curl up in bed, stay inside and not feel ready to face the world. Our society puts a lot of importance and self worth on the concept of being busy and it can be detrimental to anyone who is facing a mental health challenge and we all have something we are going through. It’s OK to have those days where you just feel like doing the bare minimum and
those days are the most important for being able to recharge and get better at taking on obstacles.

Yoga with Adriene

There is an amazing woman on YouTube who does free yoga sessions online, her yoga classes are based around self love and self worth and she
does not believe in body shaming and makes her classes as accessible as she is able to. This also includes yoga for people of all shapes and sizes who may benefit and she has many classes to choose from, easier classes to the more challenging classes. Adriene has a habit of talking to her
viewers like they are a friend and to make her sessions more adorable she has a pet dog who sometimes joins her and demands her attention while she is running a class which can be hilarious.

Adriene likes to focus on listening to our body and her classes have almost a somatic healing experience to them which is beneficial, it is about
connecting with your body and loving your body and what it does for you.

Adriene has a very soft, kind manner about her and even in her pre recorded videos she has crafted her videos to sound as if she is actually talking
to you as a friend in the moment. She speaks openly about the need to take the time out when we are not feeling happy, or are feeling stressed and she is very mental health friendly.

Adriene may have contributed to me learning how to soothe my anxiety, I still get anxious, have trouble sleeping in general but when I challenge
myself to commit to doing one simple yoga session I find I want to complete a few more. I especially love to do these classes before bed time, I
have always had trouble sleeping so her classes help me sleep better.

I’ve attached a link to Adrienes yoga channel below =) Her channel is easy to find and she is growing in popularity very quickly due to her
 authenticity and talent.

Massages/ Cupping

For those craving intense sensation or deep tissue pressure I would suggest a deep tissue massage or even cupping. Remedial massage or deep
tissue massage tends to be almost painful as the masseur/masseuse tends to use a lot of their body weight and force to work through knots. It is also good for your body in general and might even relieve some tension in your body and you’ll probably feel quite an endorphin hit and sense of
relaxation afterwards.

If a massage gets too intense you are allowed to ask them to use less pressure, they will understand and will not be upset by the request. If it gets painful you are allowed to tell them to stop that one area but it will always be best practice to warn them beforehand if you have any injuries to avoid.

Cupping works by targeting certain areas of the body where a lot of tension in the body is held and suction caps are placed, some people believe it works and some people don't but I like to have a cupping session when my need to self harm is strong. It is safer and better for me to take the time to book myself a session and the treatment might take half an hour or so but it is a grounding experience. The practioner will place warm cups on
your back and use a mini vacuum gun to draw the air out and target muscle groups to help relieve pain in the body. And once all the cups are on the practitioner will leave the room for about twenty minutes (they will still be able to hear you) to relax and enjoy the sensory experience. In that
twenty minutes you will enjoy a relaxing time to yourself as the cupping sensation provides a slight pinch to the areas of your body the cups are on. Some parts of the body are more sensitive than others.

You may get bruised after a session and this is a reaction of the blood vessels being constricted by the cupping and as the vacuum in the cupping
set sucks the air out. You may have purple blue circle shaped bruises on your back after a session.

Weighted Blankets

If you are craving comfort you can buy weighted blankets from retail stores, even common stores such as Target have these blankets in stock and
can be affordable. Weighted blankets could be cheaper than hiring a professional cuddler (I refer to professional cuddler a lot because this is one
of my areas of work) and weighted blankets are washable if you remove the cover. Some weighted blankets can even have cooling or heating
functions as the material seems to still be relaxing enough even in summer time.

Weighted blankets are usually up to seven kilograms and the pressure is dispersed equally on your body as it is spread out. You can buy cheaper
weighted options for small children with anxiety or sensory needs, it is important not to use weighted blankets on toddlers or infants though in the event of suffocation.

Weighted blankets mimic the feeling of a hug and anyone who appreciates body pressure will probably enjoy the experience. There is a safe feeling provided when you are resting beneath a weighted blanket, it is a feeling that is hard to describe but adds a sense of calm and peace.

Sometimes when we feel like hurting ourselves perhaps what we really need is to nurture ourselves and to honor our bodies and what we need. We may actually need some kind of physical comfort in the times we don't have any one to hold us. Our bodies still feel pain, even if we are angry at
ourselves and hurting emotionally our body still gets hurt even if we are angry at ourselves, the body remembers pain and trauma and for that
reason we need to really look after ourselves.

Breaking Rooms

If you have a lot of anger to release and are not sure how to express those feelings effectively I would highly recommend trying out a smash room. Have you ever walked into an antique store, or a restaurant and felt the urge to throw things at walls and break them? I certainly have, there are
places around the world that allow an hour of complete destruction for a small fee and after a quick safety briefing you are able to break things to
your content.

Nothing is off limits, apart from obviously not throwing things at each other or staff or the main building and you will be wearing protective gear to
prevent injury to yourself. There is something so satisfying about breaking expensive glasses and bowls, breaking TVs or breaking anything that is offered for destruction.

It is the cheapest anger therapy session you can have in between actual professional therapy sessions and very satisfying. Whoever decided on the concept, worked to legalize it, paid the insurance, invested in the business and the venue and brought the concept to life is a genius. Smash rooms are something that should at least be tried once and to make it more fun some rooms get really creative and even have a theme.

Smash rooms are mentally rewarding due to our socialization, conditioning and discouragement for vandalizing property so when you get the
chance to break anything you see for an hour or so you will find the experience most enjoyable. Take out all of your anger, whatever is presented to you in that room or area to be broken is fair game.

A new hobby

I’ve found learning new hobbies or engaging in free online courses or side hustles to be very rewarding. It can be tricky to get started but once you
find something that you are curious about and really enjoy it can get a bit easier.

I started freelance writing gigs on Upwork and it quickly became addictive, the gigs I got were all paid and I managed to get some work that I really enjoyed working on. If you decide to try Upwork i would suggest being patient, it takes a while to get your first gig but it is worth a shot. I actually
started writing this E-Book as I was grappling with my own demons and found writing to be cathartic.

If you have internet access and a computer it might even help to up-skill and take some short courses, some are free or fairly cheap. Doing online courses looks good to add to your resume (though you will need to
always pay more for an nationally accredited course) and may give you something interesting to focus on. Learning is always ongoing and it doesn’t matter what point you are in your life, it is never too late to try something new.

It doesn’t matter whether you love to clean, cook, organize, make stuff, work, volunteer or garden, You will feel so much better when you realize you have potential to try other areas of work or hobbies that you did not think you would excel at.

Chapter Five - Your new self care ritual

Self harm could be considered a habit and can quickly become a coping mechanism if left unchecked can become dangerous,, especially if carried out in secret. It’s about having the strength and courage to challenge these habits and to develop alternative ways of coping which may lead to
 better health outcomes and happiness.

How a ritual can help you start to love and nourish your mind and body, what do you find most relaxing and why?

A routine/ritual you develop may help minimize the cravings for self harm, this means you are changing the pathways in your brain and learning new ways to cope and manage and making conscious choices and activating the reward part of your brain. It helps to know the traps or triggers that might bring on a dark spiral and how to spot when you are in it before it takes hold. For example a stressful event may bring on an urge, perhaps that urge feels too strong at the time and that is OK or perhaps there is something else you can do.

Tap into your energy and your levels of motivation, what type of energy are you feeling in your body at this time? Are you feeling a lot of adrenaline? Perhaps you may have a lot of nervous energy and need to unleash it. If you are feeling low mood, low energy you may benefit more from a
pampering session. It really depends on what your body is asking of you because it will lead to better outcomes if you learn to improve your
relationship with your body.

Whenever I am experiencing a trigger and feel at risk I actually find it very hard to be around people, especially those I love and even my cats. When I am feeling at risk I tend to completely shut myself away and I can’t even let my cats near me because I know they pick up what I feel. That used to be my weakest time because I would feel even more angry at myself for not being strong enough for my babies. Now when I have a trigger I talk to
them, I do believe animals know some of what we are saying and can read our mood and energy better than people. I tell them I am stressed and I need time to relax and that I am going to the gym/going for a walk around the block because that helps me. When I get home I find I feel very
relaxed and switch of all electricity, do not look at my phone, light incense and rest on my bed cuddling the cats. Those days feel like victories to me and I know once I have done something with my energy I probably wont have a craving.

For those of you who may have that feeling of apathy, tiredness, depression it’s important to look after yourself and not to be hard on yourself. Even if you post on social media, message someone you care about or try to talk to someone it might help. You may feel you have limited energy and
capabilities with how you are feeling and it can be difficult to break a habit but always try. When you are feeling down and it is hard to find
motivation you can simply allow yourself to take a break. Perhaps make a note to see your GP and they will be able to create a health care plan fo
r you. It’s no joke and living with this kind of stuff is never fun, it is about trying to find your determination and how you are going to use your life
force to keep going.

It is about what feels good for you, it doesn’t have to be OK to anyone else as long as you are not hurting yourself and it is legal it is fine. Maybe you feel like creating stuff out of mashed potato, making a pillow fort and watching Disney movies as an adult, it really does not matter.

You might be the type who loves sensory things, like good food, nice warm blankets, scents, candy and that is OK. We all have our own ways of relaxing and part of trying to stay away from self harm means learning what those things are and not being afraid to seek help if it gets too much.

If something is good for your soul, mind, heart and body that will be a good thing. The only thing I would advise against is listening to emotive
music when you are alone and in a dark, lonely room because in my experience that might actually trigger up urges more. In those situations it
might be better to create something, start planning your week or path towards your goals. Having to shut down and cry and listening to sad or angry music may make you feel helpless and upset, it may not empower you to start working towards a happier path or seeking the support you need.

You deserve to surround yourself with the good things, make yourself a self love box.

I’ve found surrounding myself with little self love boxes to be helpful so hopefully this helps you out too. I have a few little boxes in each room of my house with all of my favorite things in it which I can use after a big day of work.

Most of my self care boxes have my favorite teas, I am a huge tea drinker but I keep my most loved (expensive) teas for the days I am struggling
and need to feel better. I also have a few bits of my favorite candy (I prefer the hard ones which you need to suck on for a while because it means I don’t consume a lot of candy in a short time) for mindfulness, my most indulgent wax melts, shower gel, facial moisturizer and coloring in book
with pencils. I do my best to keep my self care boxes stocked so in the event of a rough time I will already have everything I need.

Your self care box might look a little different, that is completely OK. Maybe fill it with your favorite music, essential oils, gift vouchers, money
you’ve saved for these occasions, a voucher for fast food, letters from your loved ones, hand cream, nail kits, CD’s to be burnt or anything similar.
We can all ground ourselves in the ways that we feel are most beneficial to us.

Remove temptations if you need to, explore your senses in other ways.

One of the most powerful ways to control your urges is to get rid of your self injury kit, yes it will be very difficult to do but you will not regret it.
Pharmacies sell sharps kits for under twenty dollars and you can buy them without any hassle, tell them that your are trying to stop self harm and
that you want to dispose of your sharps safely.

You can also get these from places like DASSA (I am writing from South Australia but there are other equivalent places around the world), they will
be very supportive and though they are more tailored towards drug and alcohol services they can help with any mental health issue. They may be
less daunting to walk into than a pharmacy and might even make time to stay in touch with you or refer you to services.

It’s always important to throw sharps in a sharps bin or if you do not want to buy a sharps bin a quick Google search will tell you how to dispose of
anything sharp. They can usually be put in a tin and taken to a recycling centre and you will be directed how to best dispose of them. Usually
anyone working doesn’t care if you have been cutting, they will usually be supportive and helpful and kind but usually will never make you feel bad
about it.

If you’re in a household and you live with your family and you might have particular items around the house that you use it is best to tell them to
hide it from you. It is hard to do but hopefully they will understand and respect your wishes and support you during recovery.

It’s about exploring your cravings and tactile needs in other creative ways, there are no right or wrong ways as long as no one is being hurt and it
leads to good outcomes. Hopefully by now I have covered some alternative ideas for you to try but removing the self harm items to begin with helps a lot.

Chapter Six- CalmHarm App

There is an app that can easily be added to your phone and is free to install and free to use, this app has been specifically created to help people
who are prone to self harm and to help them stop. This app has helped me in the past and I was surprised to learn that not many people know about it, it is a very helpful app and hopefully will help others.

This app is specifically designed for anyone struggling with self harm and involves practical activities that could be completed to beat the urges.

The CalmHarm app was developed in the UK and though the target audience is for younger people it actually can be beneficial to all ages and some tasks can be easily modified. The CalmHarm app features activities, affirmations and ideas to help you “ride the wave” to prevent you from acting
out on self harm urges. It is a wonderful application and it features productive ideas to try when ever you are feeling the urge. Most of the activities also have some kind of time feature on them, these activities may be five minutes long to twenty minutes long and after you complete an activity
and option will show up asking you if you are still considering self harm.

The activities are all fairly productive, they might range from bizzare and strange activities to self nurturing activities. Some activities may ask you
to do something like focus on a spot on the wall or go for a quick walk around the block. The way it works is that you choose and activity
considering the activity, what you feel like doing and your time you want to commit.

The activities covered include nurturing activities, random activities.self expressive, releasing activities and distracting activities and all of these
activities are designed to help you take your mind off of your urges in a safe way that best suits you.

Some people may prefer the random activities which are all different and even amusing at times, you may even feel a little silly for doing these
activities but they help in a strange way because they make you feel a bit lighter and silly which actually helps.

The nurturing activities are designed to ground you and to encourage other self care ideas that you might end up incorporating into your self care
journey. These may include sensory things or things you can do for yourself to ground yourself and to nurture yourself using your senses.

The self expressive activities are usually artistic or creative based and designed for people who may prefer to express themselves in a creative way. Again, though the app is geared towards younger people it does not mean that older people cannot benefit from these activities too. We all have an inner child inside of us who loves to be nurtured and healed, sometimes embracing our inner child and being creative can make us feel a lot
happier.

The releasing activities are meant more for people who want to feel that emotional release without resorting to hurting themselves, it might help to do these before doing any other tasks in case these actually make your emotions even stronger. These activities will encourage you to let it all out
and guide you to release these feelings in a healthy and productive way and will feature count down timers and you can always pair these with other activities for full effect.

The distracting activities are exactly as they sound, they are meant to distract you and make you think of something else and can range from
productive to bizzare. It might ask you to clan out your clothes draw, arrange your clothes in order by colour to something completely odd that might help you take your mind off of it.

These activities have all been developed by professionals and there are many options available to people, there are several tasks under each option and they also can be marked as complete for that extra hit of dopamine. The activities have all been designed carefully to make you feel better but
if you do an activity which may make you feel worse it is suggested you stop and try something else.

For example some self care options will tell you to take a bath, anyone who has struggled with body image might tell you that taking a bath can be a huge trigger, so these suggestions may not be completely fool proof but are always a good start. If an activity is making you feel worse it may be
best to stop and try something else.

Other activities are more focused on self nurturing and may ask you to do things like say ten really good things about yourself that you love or to
write them down. I found that in my state during self harm phases that I found those challenges the most difficult to do so those challenges were
actually really helpful at the time.

It is an easy enough App to install, most phones should have the CalmHarm app available through Google Play or an App Store and it is free to use and free to install and fairly easy to navigate. Calm Harm can also be found via their social pages on Facebook and Instagram and they have a website if you want to read more about it.

I have created a link to the page below. =) Feel free to check it out, I hope it helps and I hope more people find out about this app =)

Chapter Seven - Relapse? This doesn’t signify failure, try another way or up your self care game

This chapter has been written as a support for if you ever have a relapse, just because I write this chapter it doesn’t mean I expect my readers to
have a relapse but instead I have written this as a precaution. I have written this so in case anything ever gets bad again you will know that it is
simply a normal healing experience, breaking away from anything self destructive is not always easy to do and sometimes it can seem like a long
windy road to recovery.

A relapse does not mean that all your progress has been lost, it just means it is time to try again.

It can be easy to beat yourself up whenever you have a relapse and it is understandable why, however I tell you now that it does not mean you have
failed in any way or any of your progress or achievements have been automatically negated. In fact, it can be easy to feel that way but I assure you that you haven’t failed in any way and sometimes breaking a habit is very difficult to do.

Unless you are experiencing someones battles firsthand it can be really hard to understand why they do what they do, it may not make sense and
that is OK. Usually simply loving someone, validating them and offering your support (not advice) is enough to be there for someone. It is important to look after yourself if you are supporting someone who self harms and to be aware of your own boundaries and limitations and to remove
yourself (but not your support) and to focus on yourself if it ever gets too much for you.

It is about being kind to yourself, simply getting up and trying again because training yourself not to do something that you have been doing for
years is not going to be easy the first few times and I honestly hope that it only can get easier in time.

In events of your body associating certain dangerous things as being beneficial or pleasurable it is never easy to stop automatically, so please don't beat yourself up about it. Look at people who smoke for example, they know it’s bad for their health and some of them do try and stop and it’s not
easy for them. All kinds of people smoke too and I have observed some people might start from a very young age especially if peer pressure is an
issue. They know that smoking isn’t the healthiest and most of the time smokers smoke for stress relief or out of habit/ self soothing. I can relate to smokers with my caffeine intake, in fact I counted at least three coffees between chapters just out of habit and to help me focus. There is a reason you will see smokers smoke during a short break, it is usually a quick hit of endorphins and smokers are not bad people.

We stick to what we know, maybe some peoples coping mechanisms are more attractive or classier than others but we do what feels right for us.
Breaking free of an addiction was never going to be easy but it is still something that we can aspire to.

It’s important to focus on a quality of life above all else, the more you put pressure on yourself to do something the worse you will feel about yourself if it doesn’t go to plan. It’s important to not make a deal of trying to stop, but rather gather your team of those who support you who are willing to help you out and be there for you if you feel you are faltering.

This may sound harsh but if you are single it is best to not get involved in any relationship during the time of your healing, that is because in your time of healing and recovery you may need to learn to be self reliant and strong in yourself. Getting involved in a relationship at this time of your life can actually be dangerous to yourself and your potential partner as you may become addicted to them instead. I say this because I was once in a relationship with a young man with alcoholism and my love was not enough to bring him out of the darkness and I got dragged down, it wasn’t his fault and he is yet to learn that people do not equal recovery as I have learned the hard way. I still think of this man occasionally and remember him and his family with love, he was one of my greatest lessons in my life so far to put myself first, something I learned the hard way.

If you are in a relationship it is important to not put too much pressure on your partner for your healing and recovery, they are able to support you as much as you allow them to and that they are able to support, however it is important that they look after themselves.

It’s just about learning your new routines, things you would like to achieve and focus on and how you are going to improve your quality of life from what you have.

If you beat it once, you can beat it again. Sometimes it takes many shots and many attempts.

The battle to recovery is ongoing and if you ever slip up that is OK, it isn’t always achievable on the first shot and from my experiences with my
former partner with alcoholism I learnt that recovery was linear. Once he was sober for four months and in hindsight I wish that I had given him
more praise and validation back then because those four months I had felt the happiest with him and he had tried so hard to get there. It didn’t
matter after the relationship fell apart because I had always had hope that he would get sober regardless of if I was in his life.

There may be times you could be good for months, but then maybe something happens that you were not prepared for, not that it is your fault but
because sometimes life throws us curve balls that we were not ready for and those moments are the times we are the most of risk of relapse.
These could be any potential stressors or triggers or even hormonal imbalances that have completely thrown us out of whack and made us feel at
risk of a relapse, or sometimes we may not be able to stop and that is OK.

It never is about personal failure because all we can do is take each day as it comes and to do our best with what feelings, resources, energy and
 motivation we have per day.

I write I am “recovering” because I still have urges and every day I commit to my healing and peace.

There is a reason I have introduced myself as being “in recovery/recovering” and that reason is because though I feel I am in a position to support
or acknowledge the struggles of other people I do not feel I have completely overcome this. Every day is still an invisible battle for me, most days
are good days and I don’t even think about it and those are the easier days. Other days not so much, I might think about it more than I want to or
even eye off some of my preferred tools of ouch in a supermarket and I usually avoid such aisles all together when I am in that state. Luckily I have no implements of ouch at my house and I usually distract myself by heading to the ice cream aisle or I buy myself a really good tea to enjoy instead.

I still have a lot of issues, I cant be intimate or close with anyone, I have trust issues, I am hard on myself despite telling my readers to be kind to
themselves and I tend to push people away before they get close to me. I am not perfect, I am not a hero and I am certainly not qualified to be a
mental health professional but I relate to you.

I write I am recovering because though I don’t want to and have already survived some pretty horrible events this year I know I might falter and fall
back into old patterns if I am not careful. Luckily I have come out to a few close friends and family members so that always helps and they can
usually see when I am struggling before I admit I am and they have helped me become more accountable for managing myself and my reactions.

It doesn’t matter to me if they are not always able to help because I know that they are doing the best they can to support me and that they are
always acting from a place of love and that helps.

I do my best to look after myself each day as well as I can, I forgive myself for the days my anxiety may be so bad I may just want to curl up on the
couch all day as long as I tell someone I am not coping. As soon as you tell someone that you are not coping they will probably do anything they
can to cheer you up, just please remember that they have their own battles too.

I honestly hope that this book has helped you my dear reader, or if not perhaps helps someone you love.

Please keep happy and healthy, time to change the world =)
