A little bit of magic on a winter night

Once upon a time, in a cozy little cottage nestled at the edge of a snowy little hill, stood a little cottage. Inside the cottage, there; my grandmother, Thelma. A secret held close to her heart. She knew of magic.

Her cottage was filled warmth and stories. Pictures and artifacts of a long and happy life adorned the walls. Above the fridge, a bread box kept an array of freshly baked treats. Rows upon rows of drinking water held in plastic jars. Treasures abound; a pin cushion from China, a chandelier made of birch logs, a framed photo of a cairn terrier perched high above the window. Each of the many artifacts held a story. The cottage was a magical space, filled to the brim with memories. Filled to the brim with love.

But nothing in the cottage was as magical as the magic that surrounded her bed. Imagine a grandmother's bed so grand that it's like a little fortress high above the ground. To climb into it, you'd need a hearty leap, as the bed frame towered high above the pine floors. The bedspread, patchwork of memories—soft, worn fabrics that have been lovingly mended over the years. Surrounding the bed is a cozy sea of books; the shelves crammed with well-loved volumes, their spines a colorful mosaic of tales and knowledge, some with dust jackets aged and tattered. All loved. All cherished. This was a room of stories.

From this lofty perch, the bed offered a breathtaking view of the forest and river beyond—a lush, verdant expanse where the birch trees sway gently in the breeze, and the dappled sunlight filters through the canopy playfully dancing upon the river below. A room; both timeless and magical, a perfect spot for tales of wonder.

On the nights when the moon was full and the snow sparkled like diamonds, she would tell her grandchildren about the magic it held. "If you climb into the bed, all the way to the top," she’d say with a twinkle in her eye, "and rub the end of the bed just so, it’ll take you on an extraordinary journey."
One crisp winter evening, her favorite grandson, Kevin decided to test his grandmother’s enchanting claim. With a sense of adventure, for Kevin was more brave than smart, he climbed up the bed, carefully making his way to the top. The bed creaked softly. Kevin's heart raced with excitement. He rubbed the end of the wooden frame, feeling the gentle warmth of the magic begin to stir.

In an instant, the bed began to float, lifting gently off the ground. The room faded away, and Kevin found himself soaring above a winter wonderland. Below, the village was blanketed in snow, and the trees sparkled; snow dusted sugar.

The bed drifted higher and higher, carrying him over fluffy clouds that seemed to glow with soft light.

As Kevin looked down, he saw the frozen river lake, its surface glistening under the moonlight. He floated closer and saw a breathtaking sight: a young woman, radiant red hair and full of grace, gliding across the ice. She was dressed in a vibrant skating outfit, her cheeks flushed with excitement. He recognized her from one of the photographs on the wall. The hand-sewn outfit. The smile. That was his Grandmother!
Across the ice, a handsome young man, his big brown eyes; warm and expressive. They sparkle with a kind of youthful curiosity and intelligence that makes you feel he’s always thinking and engaging with the world around him. His smile is equally captivating—dashing and genuine, with a hint of mischief that lights up his face and reveals a touch of charisma. It's the kind of smile that makes those around him feel a little bit happier and more at ease.

Hand in hand with a dashing young man, Thelma twirled and leapt over the ice with skill and joy. Kevin marveled at how effortlessly they moved, like two stars dancing on a celestial stage. The young couple spun and glided, their laughter echoing up to the clouds.
As they completed a particularly elegant spin, the young man raised his hand, and a ribbon flew through the air, landing gracefully around Thelma’s neck. It was a beautiful, shimmering ribbon—a prize.

The joy and pride on their faces, warm smiles spreading across their cheeks. He saw the young couple share a heartfelt embrace, their happiness shining as bright as the winter moon.

Eventually, the bed began to descend, floating back towards the tiny cottage. Kevin felt a pang of nostalgia as the beautiful winter scene gradually faded, replaced by the familiar sight of his grandmother’s cozy room. As the bed touched down softly, he climbed out, his heart full of the magic.
Kevin smiled. He knew that his grandmother’s stories were not just tales but echoes of a magical past that he had been lucky enough to witness. He rushed to the kitchen corner, eager to share the adventure with Thelma, who greeted him with knowing eyes and a warm embrace and a fresh piece of lemon square.

That night, as Kevin drifted off to sleep, he felt a deep peace, touched by the magic that lingered in the world. And though he would grow up and share his own stories, he would always hold close the memory of the night he flew over the winter scene and watched his grandmother win a ribbon, and a heart; dance on the ice.
