The Day it Began and Ended
A first person account of a person’s last day on Earth
Hello, my name is Fred and I’m not on Earth anymore. I sometimes miss Earth, but it doesn’t look like my place is there anymore.
I didn’t use to write like this, in fact I just saw what and who was wrong on Earth, or as I am told and what needs to be fixed or left behind.
I’ll start on the day it began and ended, yeah, it was that quick.
It was a usual winter day for me, temps below freezing and I had to dress in thermal gear to stand the cold. I didn’t like driving because whenever I went out I would just get stressed and angry at people not obeying the laws of the road, yeah, an emotional response, and it wasn’t even my fault anyway.
Ever since the pandemic people have been shopping like it’s the end of the world all day every day, yet the thing is that just by being out and hanging out with people not six feet apart from each other without a mask makes you part of the problem. They said the pandemic is over, yet the panic buying all day every day still remained. Thankfully, I got out of the job I was in which was retail which I didn’t like anyway.
The day it happened I was enjoying a stay at home work life with flexible hours in which off I’d enjoy lounging around the house. It’s not like I didn’t enjoy going out, it’s just that I spent the past five years with too many people shopping at work that I just needed a break from them all.
I made my way into the parking lot and was looking to shop at my old work place. My old work place was the only place I could find what I need which were garbage bin rubber bands. I had no shame because when I looked at the box I knew that is what my garbage bins looked like when they were almost full and I got them because of that. But I do sometimes cheat a little bit and did get something else for myself while browsing the store. I also didn’t really like engaging with others over a few items I got, so I did self checkout, grabbed the receipt, put the groceries in my tote bags and walked out the automatic sliding door exit that was closest to the car.
Something was happening outside though I didn’t pinpoint it the moment I went out the door. It was only when I walked down the sidewalk to the crosswalk before I noticed the screams coming from up and ahead the hill in the parking lot.
Look, I didn’t design the parking lot, but it’s on a hill and parking lots shouldn’t be on a hill, but I am off topic.
People were running away from something that was coming from up the hill. I could hear some people screaming and then something went off and it sounded like rocks hitting the pavement. I would later understand what and who these sounds were coming from.
I couldn’t make out much of what was happening but it looked like a lot of armored figures but I couldn’t make out the faces. The figures were saying something and other people were fighting back and being vaporized by the figures’s guns and falling like rocks onto the concrete parking lot.
At this point I think I wanted it to be a dream or maybe a very elaborate daydream. Maybe it was a simulation. Simulation or dream I knew from TV and movies that it has an escape. I wasn’t sure whether I should be afraid or not, so I begun to ran down the sidewalk which lead to the road but there were more figures heading towards me along with more previous rock-i-fied people. I tried running the other way down the sidewalk from where I walked out of the store and there were more figures coming down from that side towards me. I could’ve lost them in the store and turned and saw another figure pointing what looked like it’s gun at me and speaking in something I didn’t understand. It sounded angry and pointed it’s gun at my tote bag. I mean, it was my tote bag, but it was also just food and other stuff, so I turned my tote bag over and emptied out my stuff. The figure then grabbed my tote bag, lifted it over it’s head and looked inside of it, shaking it to see if there was anything else inside even though I already told it. The figure then threw the empty tote bag back at me and I thought it’d be time for me to go so I started to grab the stuff I emptied on the ground but the figure then pointed the gun at me and then against my head. I didn’t know what I was going on and what was being said to me. I was scared at the time and I know that was an emotional response. Amidst the words being said there then became a silence near me as the shouting died down. Another stern, cloaked, but bald figure glided to me and the other armored figure. The armored figure saluted the cloaked figure and I guess at the time was explaining what was going on. But, looking back, I know it was explaining what was going on with me. The cloaked figure glided to me and put it’s hands against my cheeks. I tried to turn away, but it looked me in the eyes. I heard “It’s understandable to be afraid. Fear is your choice, not mine. Mine is survival.”
I heard this but did not not see the figure’s lips move. The figure turned to the armored figure and began to talk to it. But, survival? It was killing us. They were killing us.
I don’t know exactly what I said back then but it was around the lines of, “Survival? You’re killing us.”
The cloaked figure then turned back to me and was about to put it’s long hands against my cheeks but I resisted.
“Please,” it did speak English.
“You could all speak English?” I spoke back but I presumed they could at the time.
It put it’s hands towards me and pleaded again. I let it put it’s hands back on my cheeks again.
“Yes, we are killing you, but you did not fight back. Many are sacrificing themselves against us in risk of their own survival, yet, you did not. You have been selected.”
“This has been a test?” I was angry.
“And you passed.”
I was eyeing the gun of the armored figure behind him, “And what if the test isn’t over?”
The figure looked around it, “Then you’ll join the remains of the ones who fought back. And, you are surrounded. Please, I do not want to be wrong.”
The figure took it’s long cold hands off of my cheeks just as my old boss came out of the grocery store entrance closest to me with a shotgun. He was about to aim and shoot when the gun was then taken from his hands by an force as if it was an invisible enemy. The gun was turned to my old boss and the cloaked figure glided over to him, stating, “It’s over now.” The gun then dissolved into a black dust-like substance. “I’m leaving with the chosen.” My boss then tried to land a hit on the figure but then his hook was stopped mid air. Some of my boss’s skin began to burn as the figure restated, “It’s over now.” My boss winced and groaned in pain as the figure glided away towards me. The figure then looked at the armored figure, at me, around the area and then asked, “Are you ready?”
“What?”
“You are chosen. Are you ready to go?”
“Go? Where?”
“Where you’re needed.”
I thought I understood, “Not here?”
“No.”
“What if I’m not ready?”
“I wasn’t, but it was necessary.”
I looked around the area at the remains of some humans, my boss in pain, the chaos they caused, “I don’t-“
“Trust? You will.”
I was scared and it really didn’t look like I had a choice, so yeah, I nodded, the figure grabbed my shoulder and that was the last time I was on Earth.
The figure brought me onto their ship which was in orbit with many other ships around Earth. I had many questions which were explained such as why the killing happened where they responded “Few of you wouldn’t respond with violence. You fight for your lives on this planet based on fear. Fear is a choice, and you chose not to fight, so that is why you have been selected.”
They did kill people that day, but not a lot but and I still bring this up to them.
I still believe they made a mistake and could’ve approached selection in a more preserving way.
But it was just an approach and there are many approaches to new planets to colonize, help, and more help to get.
That is their plan after all, they just need help on the approach which is why they chose some humans.
I am used to new ways of living and transferring over here was difficult but they accommodate to human needs.
They have good intentions but their technique needs work.
And that is why they need our race to help with colonizing or aiding other planets.
But what if they were different. What if they came to this planet differently in peace only asking for help. Would you fight back in fear or would you extend a helping hand?
That is the end of The Day it Began and Ended. Thanks for reading.
