"The Fortune Cookie" | Fiction
A fortune cookie I never asked for. A message I didn’t believe. By morning, everything would change.
Everything in my life was going smoothly...until I cracked open a fortune cookie.
After wrapping up a long, draining day at work, I decided to treat myself to some Chinese takeout, my small ritual of comfort after a week that felt heavier than usual. I was exhausted, hungry, and in absolutely no mood to cook. Fast food wasn’t just convenient that night; it felt like a tiny act of self‑care, something simple I could look forward to.
I ordered my usual favorites: chicken and shrimp fried rice, spicy chicken with string beans, and a couple of egg rolls, the kind of meal that always made me feel grounded. Familiar. Predictable.
When I picked up my order, I double‑checked the bag like I always do. Everything was there. But tucked between the warm containers was something unexpected, a single fortune cookie. I paused. In all the times I’d ordered from this place, they had never once given me one. Not even by accident.
I shrugged it off. Fortune cookies were harmless, silly little things. Maybe I’d crack it open later for a laugh.
Finally, I made it home.
I kicked off my shoes, exhaled, and set the stage for a quiet night.
Before jumping in the shower, I popped my food into the microwave so it would be piping hot when I settled into my recliner. I already knew what I’d be watching: No Time To Die , Daniel Craig, my favorite James Bond, the perfect escape after a long day.
The house felt unusually still that night. Not eerie, just, still. The kind of quiet that makes you aware of your own breathing. I brushed it off as exhaustion, the kind that settles deep in your bones after too many long days in a row.
With my plate balanced on my lap, I reached into the bag and pulled out the fortune cookie. Why not? I cracked it open, expecting something cheesy like “Good luck is coming your way.”
Instead, the slip of paper read: “Your life is in danger.”
I actually laughed. Out loud.
"These fortune cookies are so ridiculous,” I said to myself, shaking my head. Who writes these things? And why would anyone think that message was a good idea?
I tossed the paper aside and kept eating, letting the movie pull me in. The action, the music, the familiar comfort of any story with a handsome James Bond, I loved, it all washed over me.
By the time I climbed into bed, the fortune cookie was already a forgotten joke.
But as I settled under the covers, a strange heaviness lingered in the air. Not fear, just a feeling I couldn’t quite name. A whisper of something out of place. I told myself it was nothing. Just fatigue. Just imagination. Just the mind playing tricks when the world finally goes quiet. Even so, a faint chill drifted through the room, brushing my skin like a warning I refused to acknowledge.
Later that night, I drifted off to sleep… never knowing my demise would arrive before morning.
