Sophie finds a rare orchid, granting one wish. But the price is steep. As she grapples with the consequences of her desire, she learns the true cost of magic.

Sophie knelt in the sunlit meadow, her fingers trembling as they hovered over the rare blue orchid. Its petals shimmered like liquid sapphire, the morning dew clinging to them like jewels. This flower was the last of its kind, hidden deep within the forest where Sophie had ventured alone. She had dreamed of finding it ever since her grandmother’s stories painted it as a symbol of resilience and beauty. Now, it was within her grasp.

Her pulse quickened as she reached for it, her heart swelling with the thought of presenting it to her grandmother, who had grown frail and housebound. Sophie imagined the joy it would bring, a final bloom to rekindle the old woman’s spirit. But as her fingers brushed the stem, a sharp growl rumbled through the trees. Sophie froze, her breath catching in her throat. A wolf stepped into the clearing, its amber eyes locked on her. Its sleek, silver coat glistened in the sunlight, but its bared teeth were anything but beautiful.

Sophie backed away slowly, her mind racing. She could leave the orchid behind and escape, but the thought of returning empty-handed filled her with despair. The wolf took a step closer, its growl deepening. She spotted a branch nearby, sturdy and within reach. Grabbing it, she held it out, her hands shaking. “I don’t want to hurt you,” she whispered, though she doubted the wolf cared. The standoff lasted an eternity before the wolf lunged. Sophie swung the branch, the impact jarring her arms. The wolf yelped and retreated, its amber eyes narrowing with caution. Sophie seized the moment, grabbing the orchid and running as fast as her legs would carry her.

She burst out of the forest, her lungs burning, the orchid clutched tightly in her hand. But relief was short-lived. A figure stood on the path ahead, cloaked in shadow. As Sophie approached, the figure stepped forward, revealing a weathered face and piercing eyes.

“Do you know what you’ve taken?” the stranger asked, his voice like gravel. “It’s just a flower,” Sophie replied, though her voice wavered. The man shook his head. “That flower grants its possessor one wish. But the price is steep—whatever you wish for, something of equal value will be taken in return.” Sophie’s heart raced. She thought of her grandmother, bedridden and weak, the life she could wish back for her. But what would the flower take in return? Her own health? Her memories? She looked down at the orchid, its petals glowing softly in the twilight.
The next morning, Sophie’s grandmother woke to find the orchid in a vase by her bedside, its beauty unmatched. A note lay beneath it, written in Sophie’s hand:

I wished for your strength to come back. I hope you’ll forgive me for what I’ve given in return.

Sophie stood in the forest, the orchid’s glow fading as her sight dimmed. The price had been her vision, leaving her in darkness. Yet, as the wolf reappeared beside her, its presence a quiet comfort, she felt no regret. Her grandmother’s warm voice filled her thoughts, steady and strong, just as she had been in Sophie’s childhood, a sound worth every sacrifice. And later that evening, the wolf put her out of her misery.
