The last day
A package arrives with a key and instructions. The instructions carry a warning to hide somewhere before it's too late.
The last day The parcel that had arrived today contained an old key and a list of instructions to use it. The instructions said to go to the Denver International Airport. Once there, I was to find the entrance to the tunnels under the airport. Once I found the entrance, I was to use the key to get inside. At the end of the letter, it said to destroy the instructions and the key once I got inside the tunnels. There was no return address on the package. I was confused as to who could have sent it. I noticed the postmark was marked in the state of New Mexico. Furthermore, I only knew two people in that state; my sister and her son. Likewise, I called my sister right away; thinking this must be one of her pranks. She insisted it was not because her and my nephew had received a package just like mine, with the same exact instructions. I suggested maybe we should drive to Denver together. She agreed it would be better and safer. It took her an hour to get to my house. When she arrived, I had a bag of clothes and other essentials and my purse; it was all I really needed. We left my apartment in Omaha, Nebraska and drove for eight hours before we got too tired to continue on. We stopped at a hotel off the interstate for the night. Furthermore we decided to share a room, it was much cheaper. I flipped on the TV and went to take a shower. It had been a long drive, and I was feeling a little gritty. As I was showering, I suddenly heard a loud knock at the bathroom door. My sister was pounding on the door and yelling for me to hurry up. I finished up, got dressed and went out into the room. I asked my sister what she was wanting and she told me to watch the tv. I sighed deeply and turned around to watch the tv. The news was on and the reporter was saying that the terrorist group that had been threatening to annihalate America had finally sent off a nuclear bomb to the USA. The experts thought it would probably land in New York City or somewhere near there. However, the blast would go at least three states wide and the radiation wave with the blast would reach nearly across the whole country. They predicted it would be a nuclear winter for at least a hundred years. They were advising everyone to take shelter underground. I stood up and looked at my sister and told her it was time to go. The news said people in the west coast wouldn't feel or see anything for at least forty eight hours after the blast; that's how long it would take for the radiation wave to reach to the West Coast. We all packed up our things and ran out to the car. My nephew got in the back seat and laid down and my sister laid back in the passenger seat. I got into the driver's side, started up the car and squeeled my tires out of there. I drove at least ninety the rest of the way. I wanted to get to Denver before the radiation wave hit us. Anyone standing outside when it hit would either die or get terribly sick. I didn't want to end
up becoming a radiation zombie; so I stepped on the gas and sped on. My sister and nephew were peacefully sleeping; so I didn't have to worry so much about them. Ten hours later, we arrived in Denver. I drove us to the airport and parked the car. We got out and grabbed our bags, then headed inside. We got inside and a talking gargoyle statue startled us, but it was humorous. We continued on laughing about the silly things they had done to this airport. Finally, we found our entrance. My sister took out her key and put it into the door and went in. The door automatically swung shut. I took out my key and went in after my sister and nephew. The door swung shut behind me and we continued down the dark tunnel. We walked for five minutes when we saw a light coming towards us. It was a man in camouflage coming to greet us. He walked up to us and grabbed our bags. He told us to follow him and he would take us to the common room. We had no clue what he was talking about, but we followed him regardless. We walked down the dark tunnel until we came upon a lit corridor. We walked through the corridor into a large room. It had two big couches on either side of the room and a big play rug in the middle of the room. There was two TVs; one on each side of the room. There was a glass door at the end of the room. The man in camouflage explained this was where everyone gathered during day hours. Beyond the glass door was the rooms each person was assigned to live in until things above were safe enough to ascend. He told us New York City had been hit and the radiation wave would be there within the next few hours. He told us before New York City was hit, Jerusalem and Dubai were destroyed as well. He said that the president had sent troops to Jerusalem to restablish the city and it's temple; others were sent to Dubai to find survivors. He told us there were no survivors in New York City. He informed us it would be a long time before we could ascend to the surface. I was still wondering who it was that sent us here to begin with. He told us it was probably the CIA. They had a list of people who had a perfect genetic makeup and were either military or family of military to be saved to repopulate the world when it was time. I told my sister we got real lucky our family was a military family. Otherwise, we would have either died or been turned into a radiation zombie. She sighed accepting our fate. I sat down with her and told her we will do our best to live as good a life as possible and hopefully we will have more children to help repopulate the world someday. She hugged me and I held her as we watched the news showing one city after another becoming desolated by the radiation wave that stretched across the country. All we could do was watch and hold each other, thanking God we had been saved. © Mindy sleeper
