"The Little Black Dress" | Fiction
I, Mia Z. Edwards, travel to Milan after winning a dream contest, where Donatella Versace brings my fantasy little black dress to life.
I despise pants. Truly, I do.
They will never touch my body.
In my opinion, they’re meant for men.
I’ve always felt most myself, most feminine, when wrapped in the elegance of a dress.
Dresses are my devotion. They hang on satin‑padded hangers like quiet little promises, waiting to be worn. My closet is filled with ready‑to‑wear pieces by Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, treasures I’ve collected from Macy’s Department Store in downtown Washington, D.C.
But deep in my heart, I longed for something more. Something exquisite. Something that felt like it belonged only to me, crafted with intention and meant to celebrate my womanhood. I wanted a piece that whispered confidence every time I moved, something that made me feel undeniably powerful. My very own haute couture little black dress.

And in my dreams, that dress would be created by the legendary Italian designer Donatella Versace. I imagined the feel of luxury against my skin, the confidence of wearing something crafted with artistry, precision, and a touch of magic.
Of course, it was only a fantasy… until one day, luck decided to surprise me.
-----
I won a radio contest, an all‑expenses‑paid trip to Milan, Italy, to spend a day with the fashion designer of my choice, Donatella Versace.
-----
After a long flight from Washington, D.C., my fiancé and I arrived in Milan exhausted but exhilarated. I stepped outside the airport, hailed a taxi, and with excitement in my voice, told the driver to take me straight to the House of Versace.
Donatella greeted me with warmth, a handshake, and two soft kisses on the cheeks. Her presence alone felt like stepping into a world I had only admired from glossy magazine pages. And then, the magic began.
She asked about my style and my budget. She sketched a sophisticated design and invited my input. Together, we selected a luxurious black fabric.
Her patternmaker transformed the sketch into a flawless replica.
And finally, my little black dress came to life. It was a short masterpiece crafted from the softest Chinese linen, finished with elegant black ruffles along the hem. Versatile. Understated. Timeless. Everything a little black dress should be.
-----
That evening, I met my fiancé Leonardo for dinner at Cipriani’s, one of Milan’s most luxurious restaurants. And of course, I wore my new haute couture dress.
Leonardo says, “Good evening. You look very elegant in your black dress and ankle‑strap sandals.”
I reply, “This is the first time you’ve noticed my dress. Thanks, honey,” I said with a giggle.
-----
After dinner, we were invited to an exclusive soirée hosted by Donatella herself. The room shimmered with elegance, affluent patrons, couture insiders, exquisite cocktails, delicate hors d’oeuvres, and desserts that felt almost too pretty to eat. Soft music floated through the air, and for a moment, I felt as though I had stepped into a world designed entirely for dreams.
The night unfolded like a fairytale, each moment reflecting the enchantment of my new little black dress.
And that… is where my dream concludes.
