Expect the unexpected as Eloise discovers the secret of the empty journal. Will she gain more than she loses as she finds the hidden world within its empty pages?

Chapter 5 - Interruptions

Eloise’s POV

Every instinct told me Jack was up to no good, trying to take my mind off that blasted journal. With every twisted smile and a twinkle in his eye, I sensed he was toying with me. As I headed to the bathroom, I tried to filter through the clues but hadn’t come close to solving the mystery.

Turning the light on in the bathroom, I ran the water in the sink and peeked out into the living room. He stood still, deep in thought, with a grin on his face. My heart melted as I looked at him standing there. At that moment, I realized how much I loved him, not just for his good looks but for how he looked at me, cared for me, and brushed off my wild emotions. He always managed to turn clouds into rainbows, even in the middle of a tumultuous storm.

Finishing in the bathroom, I walked out in my new nightgown and sat beside him on the couch. He activated the butterflies in my stomach when he took my hand. I watched his eyes take in every inch of my body. It was sensual and seductive because he was the one who stole my heart and gave me his.

His voice was husky when he asked, “Would you like some limoncello or something else to drink?”

Oh! How to answer that? I wanted something else but was too timid to speak my desires into reality. Feeling my face blushing, I said, “For now, limoncello.”

”I like the sound of that,” he said as he handed me my drink. I slowly sipped it while keeping my eyes tethered to the ground. Intimacy wasn’t something I wanted to talk about, knowing how shy I was, regardless of how he made me feel when we were together.

Resting my head on his shoulder, I whispered, “Thank you for your kindness tonight.”

”Let’s forget about that. It was nothing.”

Sitting up, I looked him in the eyes and scolded him, “Listen up, buddy. It was a big deal. My heart aches over losing that book, and I’m sad I’ll never see it again. That said, you allowed me to run through my emotions without judging me.”

Shaking his head, he laughed, saying, “When did I say I didn’t judge you? Did I ever say that?”

I playfully hit him on the shoulder and tried to tickle him, but I accidentally spilled my drink on his shoes. He looked down at the puddle in his shoe and growled, “That’s the final straw! You’re in for it now!”

Taking the drink out of my hand, he placed it on the side table and scooped me up. Tossing me over his shoulder, he marched me into the bedroom and dropped me on the bed. “Hmmm. What shall I do with you? You are a troublemaker of the highest order.”

Giggling, I rolled over and begged, “Please forgive me, kind sir. Can’t you see it was an accident?”

Wagging his finger at me, he teased, “How often am I expected to forgive you? Should I let your insolent behavior go unpunished?”

Rolling onto my stomach, I wagged my butt before turning around and said, “Two can play this game.”

Sitting on the edge of the bed, he leaned toward me and replied, “It’s more fun that way. Don’t you think so?”

Nodding my head in agreement, I was about to say something else when I heard a loud banging sound from the hallway. Looking at Jack, I asked, “What is going on?”

Shrugging his shoulders, he said, “I have no clue, but let me check. Stay here.”

Waiting isn’t my strong point, and I never was. I hopped off the bed, crossed the room, and peeked into the living room. Jack looked through the peephole and smiled. Opening the door, I heard him say to the other person, “Thank you again.”

When he closed the door, he put the package down and asked, “So, where were we?”

Grimacing at him, I scolded him, “No way! You have some explaining to do! Who was that? What is that?” I pointed to the package wrapped in brown paper. I was shocked. Did he really think I’d just forget about the mysterious package and get lost with him under the covers?

Jack crossed his arms and said, “Eloise, I’m sorry, but I can’t show you the box's contents until I’m good and ready.”
