Humour
3 min read

We've all been there. Our mind hops on the negativity train and off we ride. But what would happen if we hopped off mid ride?

The deafening silence screamed at Kate telling her she was all alone. The tick tock of the clock carried on with no awareness of her heart's ache of loneliness.

If only someone would love her. Her mind raced, feeling the pity party of one starting up yet again.

Each day her husband dutifully marched off to work, abandoning Kate to the solitude she despised, where her thoughts ran rampant and accelerated as speeding bullets of negativism and defeat.

What if something happened to him while he is at work? What if he meets another woman and leaves me for her?

The spiral of doom and despair began sucking Kate into a vortex of destruction. She was heading down the same familiar path as usual.

Then it dawned on her, what if she chose a different path? What if it was possible to lead her mind in another direction? What if she had more control over her thoughts than she realized?

What if it was possible to kick the devil perched on her shoulder, whispering his negative notions, into silence? What if it was possible to ask the absent angel to alight her other shoulder and take its rightful place, asserting the opposite of the devil's whispers until there was no longer two conflicting voices, but one solid uplifting voice saying "You are here for a purpose. You are never alone. I am always with you. I will never leave you, and you will rise to your destiny as I guide you."

Huh, Kate thought to herself. I never realized that was an option. Today, I will choose the light. I will hop off the ride of negativism and tell myself a better lie, a positive one. I will flip the catastrophic thoughts to more realistic ones. I will embrace the fearful thoughts as a mother embraced a frightened child and rationalize with the child-like part of me that is scared.

The devil on Kate's shoulder told her she couldn't change her thoughts, she'd been negative for so long, Kate retorted out loud "I can change my thoughts." With each new assault the devil threw at Kate, she retorted the opposite, empowering thought. "Your husband is going to leave you." He mercilessly laughed, tearing a piece out of Kate's tender heart. Her inner fire burned with a new fervour as she fought back, "My husband loves me and he will not leave me." The firey darts of the enemy continued to assault Kate, "You are all alone." She was now gaining momentum, like a train chugging out of the station embarking on a brand new journey."I am never alone."

And with that final barb, Kate's peace returned to her. Strengthened by the battle, empowered to win the war yet another day, when the enemy attack yet again. This time, she knew his tactic having been empowered by the angel whispering on her shoulder telling her she could handle whatever weapon the devil threw at her the next time. But for now. Kate was glowing in victory.
