Chapter 1

Prologue

The first of the sun's rays reflected inside the cabin as a tired Vincent Sullivan endured the stifling smokey air of the red-eye plane, descending into Miami in the early dawn hours, The fiery hues of the rising sun mirrored his growing trepidation, foreshadowing a descent into a world where darkness thrived beneath the vibrant surface. It had only been two months since his brother had gotten killed in a deal that had gone bad back in New York, but for Vincent, it had felt like it had taken far too long to catch up with the ones responsible.
Josh Sullivan had never been what anyone would call a saint, but when he came to Vincent with the brilliant idea to hook up with one of the local crews in town for a job, Josh found himself on the wrong side of a setup by some rival gangbangers. After learning of his brother’s untimely demise, Vincent vowed to get his hands on the one responsible for setting him up, and It wasn’t long before he found what he was looking for while rummaging through his late brother’s belongings.
Lifting his brother’s mattress, Vincent found the pager that Josh had used to line up their jobs and began flipping through messages until he came across the one he was looking for regarding their last job. ‘Meet up, 8 am behind Danceteria, blue convertible.’ the message read as Vincent noted the number that the message had been sent from before putting the pager in his pocket and heading for the phone in the kitchen. With a mix of apprehension and determination, Vincent knew that finding the pager was just the first step in unravelling the mysterious events surrounding his brother’s last job, leading him to a confrontation that could hold the answers he desperately sought. As he reached for the phone, he couldn't shake the feeling that his world was about to collide with a truth far more dangerous than anything he had faced before.
Dialling the number on his brother's pager, the phone rang incessantly, each ring sinking deeper into the knot that had formed in Vincent's stomach, amplifying his growing unease about what awaited him on the other end of the line. As the ringing persisted, Vincent's mind raced with countless possibilities. Would the call bring answers, or would it plunge him deeper into a web of deceit and danger? Each passing ring intensified his anxiety, the weight of the unknown bearing down on him. Finally, on the seventh ring, the line clicked and a hushed voice emerged from the other end. "Who is dis?" a voice inquired, filled with cautious suspicion.
Vincent hesitated momentarily, gathering his thoughts before responding, "It's Vincent, Josh’s brother. I need to know what happened with The Danceteria deal." Silence lingered for what felt like an eternity. Vincent's heart pounded in his chest, a mix of anticipation and fear coursing through his veins. Finally, the voice on the other line spoke, its tone heavier, now laced with a sense of urgency. "Meet me tonight, midnight in Bryant Park, come alone and don’t forget the pager. We have much to discuss." The mysterious voice abruptly hung up, leaving Vincent gripping the phone tightly, his mind racing with questions. Who was on the other end? How did they know about the pager? And what was the truth that awaited him in the dead of night?
A sense of foreboding settled over Vincent as he contemplated his next move. Midnight would soon arrive, and with it, the unveiling of secrets that could change everything he thought he knew. Forging forward, determined to uncover the truth, Vincent steeled himself for the rendezvous that would either unravel his world entirely or at the very least, shed some light on the enigma that seemed to have consumed his brother. Little did he know, that stepping into the shadows would unravel a dangerous game of betrayal, peeling back layers of deceit that threatened to consume him as well. Hanging up the phone, Vincent glanced down at his watch, the hands ticking closer to midnight.
Bryant Park was shrouded in darkness, its usually lively atmosphere replaced by an eerie stillness. The city lights glistened against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, casting long shadows that danced across the pavement. Vincent's heart raced as he walked through the empty park, his footsteps echoing through the night. He carried the weight of his brother's memory on his shoulders, the need for answers burning in his chest. The air was heavy with anticipation and a chilling breeze whispered through the trees, heightening the tension that enveloped the scene. Reaching the designated meeting spot, Vincent's eyes darted around, searching for any signs of the mysterious figure he was to encounter. He clutched the pager tightly, a token that held the key to the truth he sought.
Every passing second felt like an eternity, amplifying the uncertainty that clouded his mind. As the clock struck midnight, a figure emerged from the shadows, their identity concealed by the darkness. Vincent's heart skipped a beat, the weight of the moment sinking in. The figure approached slowly, stepping into the faint glow of a nearby lamppost, revealing a face etched with weariness and distrust. The stranger's eyes met Vincent's, full of knowledge that went beyond words. "Vincent?" the voice spoke, its tone laced with a combination of resolve and caution. "Ya came here, searchin' for the truth, kid. But lemme tell ya, be mindful of what ya unravel. In this city, secrets got a way of devourin' even da strongest of souls."
Vincent swallowed back his apprehension, holding up the pager as he tried steadying his voice. "I need to know what happened to my brother. I can’t rest until I find out the truth." A solemn nod from the stranger acknowledged Vincent's determination. "Follow me," they responded, their steps leading out towards a car parked on the street, where the shadows beckoned and the secrets of the night lay waiting. Vincent took a deep breath, his brother's memory guiding him as he took a step forward, ready to confront the darkness that awaited him and discover the dangerous web of deceit that had entangled his family’s lives. As Vincent followed the stranger his brother had once communicated with, he hoped the truth would soon be revealed to him.
The stranger stood beside an idling sedan as he waited for Vincent to catch up, the light from a nearby lamppost finally illuminating his face. Vincent could see the man was on the younger side and judging by his accent guessed that he was likely Italian. Approaching the vehicle the man opened the back door and ushered Vincent inside. Vincent slid into the sedan's backseat, his senses heightened and his mind raced as the smell of worn leather mixed with a faint hint of cigar smoke created an atmosphere of intrigue and danger. The windows were tinted, casting a veil of secrecy over the night as they drove through the dimly lit streets of New York. The stranger, partially masked by the darkness, spoke, his voice low and filled with a mixture of caution and authority.
"Vincent, my name is Giovanni. Your brotha, Josh, and I were acquaintances. We crossed paths on a few jobs back in da day. I can't say I knew him well, but we shared some business connections if ya catch my drift," Vincent's curiosity grew with every word Giovanni spoke, his desire for answers becoming stronger. "So, Giovanni, what happened to my brother? Why did he end up dead in a deal that went sour?" Vincent's voice quivered with a mix of desperation and anger. Giovanni sighed, his eyes fixed on the road ahead, his tone heavy with regret. "Vincent, ya gotta understand, dis city, dis world we live in, it's run by secrets and lies. That deal, it wasn't no coincidence. Your brotha, as talented as he was, he got caught up in a mess of vendettas and betrayals. It ain't how it was supposed to end," Giovanni said, his voice sympathetic as Vincent clenched his fists, his jaw tightening as the weight of what he was hearing settled upon him. The car came to a halt, and they had arrived at their destination - a forgotten warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Vincent braced himself, knowing that what lay ahead held the answers he had been searching for, but also the danger that came with the truth. Stepping out of the car, Vincent and Giovanni walked into the darkness, ready to confront the secrets buried within New York's unforgiving underworld.
As the two entered the building, Vincent felt a tinge of unease wash over him as they made their way through the recently condemned warehouse, walking along in silence as Giovanni led the way through the darkness, a flashlight he had brought their only source of guidance. After a few moments of walking, Giovanni finally broke the silence, "Dis is da place, Victor Torres's base of operations, or at least it used to be before da rat bastard abandoned ship. Dis here was da man dat the Valentino Family and I, we had tight connections with. He's also da guy who set up the last job, ya know, da one dat involved your brotha. And lemme tell ya, he was real insistent on gettin' Josh involved. Real particular ‘bout dat." Pulling a cigar from his jacket and lighting it Giovanni continued, “But, like I said, da bastard went and abandoned ship, so I ain't got much more ta tell ya 'bout him. Whatcha need ta know is dat the Valentino Family and youse, we both got a bone ta pick with that Torres guy. But before we even get there, I gotta ask ya somethin'. Are ya willin' to lend a hand to the Valentino Family? Are ya in our corner?"
Vincent stood quietly absorbing the information he had just received, he knew if the Valentino Family helped him find his brother’s killer, he would end up forever indebted to the family, but in his heart, he knew it was a lost cause trying to locate Torres without their help. After a few moments of contemplation, Vincent spoke, his voice wavering and unsure, “Yeah, I think I can lend a hand if you can point me in the right direction.” Giovanni smiled in response before taking a deep drag of his cigar and letting the aromatic smoke roll out of his mouth. "Splendid! I'll relay the good news to the boss personally. Now, let's get down to brass tacks. Word on da streets is dat Torres made a quick getaway to his fancy mansion in South Beach. Lucky for us, we gots a contact there, a valuable asset who confirmed this intel for us. We can arrange a flight for ya tomorrow evenin' if dat ain't too soon for ya. Once you're there, we'll also hook ya up with all the tools ya need to track down dat scumbag, capisci?" Giovanni extended a hand towards Vincent, a grin rising on his face as the two shook hands. Although Vincent knew he’d just made a deal with the devil he also knew that in less than twenty-four hours he’d be on his way to face the man responsible for his brother's death.

Chapter 2

Chapter 1: Miami Heat

Vincent stepped off the plane at Miami International Airport, feeling the scorching heat immediately embrace him like a relentless lover. Beads of sweat formed on his brow as his body adjusted to the striking contrast from the cool breeze of New York. The tropical air wrapped around him like a heavy blanket, each breath more humid than he had ever experienced. As Vincent made his way through the bustling airport, he couldn't help but notice the vibrant energy and the mix of cultures that streamed through the corridors. The sights, sounds, and even the scent of Miami were distinctively different, intertwining a sense of allure and danger.
Dragging his suitcase behind him, Vincent, wearing his newly tailored white suit given to him by Giovanni, stepped out into the radiant sunlight. The palm trees swayed gently, casting fleeting shadows on the scorching pavement as if mocking the shade-seeking pedestrians. Adjusting his sunglasses, he couldn't help but admire the beautiful chaos that unfolded before his eyes. Striding towards the waiting cab, his shoes tapping against the hot concrete, Vincent reminisced on the stark contrast between New York and Miami. In New York, the cool nights offered comfort and a sense of protection, but here in Miami, the heat seemed to awaken a different sensation- inviting both pleasure and danger.
Once inside the taxi, the blast of the air conditioning provided a brief respite from the relentless heat outside. Vincent wiped the sweat off his forehead and leaned back into the plush leather seats, contemplating the task ahead of him. The mission was clear: find Victor Torres and make him pay for the betrayal, for the havoc he had caused. As the car drove through the vibrant city streets, Vincent couldn't help but feel a certain thrill in his veins. Miami was like a siren, its warm embrace luring him into a dance with danger. This was uncharted territory for him, a new era in his life.
With the breeze from the cab’s air conditioning gently caressing his face, Vincent stared at the city's skyline, its modern architecture harmonizing with the bright blue sky. The scene beckoned him towards the unknown, towards pursuing justice and retribution. Vincent clenched a fist, channelling the rage he felt against Torres, the man who had disrupted the delicate balance of his family life. The heat of Miami was not just confined to the weather; it coursed through his veins, fuelling his determination to succeed on this dangerous path he now trod.
As the cab neared the hotel, Vincent could sense the city's pulse quicken, matching the rhythm of his own heartbeat. A new chapter had begun, one that would test his mettle and his newly found loyalty to the Valentino Family. In the tropical heat, amidst the seductive allure of Miami, he knew that destiny awaited him, ready to unfold in a city where the line between paradise and peril was drawn razor-thin.
Stepping out of the cab the sweltering heat of the city overtook Vincent again as beads of sweat broke out on the back of his neck, with a brief nod to his driver he moved quickly making his way inside the hotel where he was supposed to have a reservation courtesy of the Valentino Family. Once again in a climate-controlled environment, Vincent could relax a bit, his racing heart slowing down ever so slightly as flashes of his last conversation with his brother still played in his mind's eye.
Arriving at the front desk, Vincent was greeted by a short and snooty-looking gentleman with black slicked-back hair and a thin moustache, “Welcome to ze Fontainebleau Hotel, monsieur. 'Ow can I be of assistance to you today?" The clerk inquired with a hint of arrogance. Vincent matched the man's gaze, his eyes filled with a hardened determination. "I have a reservation under Vincent Sullivan, courtesy of the Valentino Family," he replied, his voice steady and commanding.
The clerk’s eyes widened as he stood up straight, “Ah oui, monsieur Vincent, we 'ave been expecting you!” The man said as he turned to grab the room key from the wall before continuing, “Ah, we 'ave one of our fine penthouse suites awaiting you, monsieur,” a large amount of fake enthusiasm now apparent in his voice, as if he was terrified of the man standing before him, a feeling Vincent felt he could get used to.
Taking the key from the clerk, Vincent turned to make his way towards the elevator to his room as the short man called after him, “Oh by ze way, monsieur Vincent, I am to announce your arrival to monsieur Giovanni right away.” Turning back, Vincent smiled and gave him a quick nod in acknowledgement before strolling towards the elevator and taking it up to his penthouse suite.
The elevator doors opened, revealing the opulent hallway with gold-patterned wallpaper. Vincent's footsteps echoed on the marble floor as he approached the hotel penthouse. Pushing open the heavy double doors, he entered a world of decadence and luxury. Dimmed crystal chandeliers bathed the room in a warm glow. Vibrant artwork adorned the walls, capturing the essence of Miami's vibrant nightlife. Deep velvet curtains framed floor-to-ceiling windows, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline.
In the sunken living room, plush leather sofas and armchairs beckoned Vincent to indulge in opulent comfort. A sleek bar with mirrored shelves awaited for his pleasure, offering a selection of fine liquors. A crackling fireplace cast dancing shadows, adding to the room's allure. Dominating a corner, a towering stereo system provided a soundtrack for his entrance into a world of power and corruption. An arcade machine flashed invitingly, promising a brief escape from the darkness outside.
Separated by cascading partitions, the bedroom exuded tranquillity. The king-sized bed, draped in plush velvet bedding, awaited him like a throne. The mirrored ceiling added a touch of sensuality. Adjacent, a decadent bathroom featured a sunken bathtub adorned with gold fixtures and delicate porcelain accents. The penthouse would become Vincent's fortress amidst the chaos of Miami. As he settled in, he knew that secrets and dangers lurked beneath the glamorous façade, waiting to be discovered.
As Vincent eased into the comfort of the penthouse, he indulged in pouring himself a drink at the bar, relishing the tranquillity that enveloped him. Suddenly, a melodic ring resonated from the adjacent room, pulling him towards the source. In the bedroom, atop the nightstand, rested a large brick phone that seemed plucked right from the silver screen. It exuded an aura of sophistication and power, elevating Vincent's fascination.
With intrigue and caution, Vincent lifted the weighty phone, noting its impressive presence in his hand. As he sat down on the plush velvet bedspread, he answered the call, his voice carrying a sense of wariness blended with curiosity. "Hello?" he greeted, not sure if he was ready for whatever was on the other end.
The voice on the other end spoke and Vincent instantly recognized Giovanni’s accent, "Vincent, my boy, good to see ya made it in one piece. How ya likin' that world-famous Miami heat, huh? Fuggedaboutit!" Vincent let out an audible groan as Giovanni chuckled, "Chin up, kid. You'll get used to it in no time. Anyway, I see you found the first of many gifts courtesy of the Valentino Family to aid ya in your hunt for Torres." Vincent looked at the phone he was holding in his hand, “pretty choice phone, I think I’ve only ever seen them on the big screen, it’s very Blade Runner.” He said, returning the phone to his ear.
The mobster laughed, "Well I ain't too sure what a Blade Runner is, but I'm glad ya like da phone. Anyway, when ya get a chance, I highly recommend ya go through the briefcase I had one of my associates place in your room before you arrived. He mentioned he stashed it in the bedroom closet.” With the phone still pressed to his ear, Vincent stood up from the bed and made his way to the closet. As he opened it, his eyes landed on a magnificent Italian leather briefcase resting on the top shelf.
Vincent carefully retrieved the briefcase from the shelf and brought it back to the bed, mindful of its contents. "I've got it right here," he responded to Giovanni, placing the briefcase down flat and opening it while keeping the phone to his ear. As Vincent explored the contents of the briefcase, Giovanni continued, "Inside dat case, youse gonna find some real valuable items, capisci? Foremost, dere's a gun and some ammo. It may not be the biggest arsenal, but trust me, it's enough to handle any surprise situations dat may come your way."
The young mafioso paused briefly, allowing Vincent time to rummage through the briefcase's contents. "Second," Giovanni continued, “Inside dat case, youse gonna have some cash to tide ya over for the first few weeks. It ain't gonna make ya a millionaire, but it'll give ya some stability, ya know what I'm sayin'? Check this out, the Family's got you covered with the Hotel. It's gonna be on our account, so it's gonna be your haven, your base of operations as long as you need. And one more thing, you'll spot them keys to a sweet Cadillac Convertible sittin' pretty in the hotel lot. Just tell the valet to bring it up front for ya."
"Well shit, thank you very much, Giovanni. I truly appreciate all of this," Vincent said warmly as he lifted the gun and admired its craftsmanship in the gentle bedroom light. Giovanni chuckled playfully and reminded Vincent that this support from the Family wasn't just for leisure; it was a gesture of appreciation for taking care of an important task. Giovanni then shared the essential information about their contact who could lead them to Torres.
Vincent, eager to note down the details, quickly located a notepad and pen with the hotel's logo on the kitchen counter. With his pen poised to write, he eagerly asked, "I'm ready, what do you have for me?" Giovanni announced, “Okay, listen up, kid. We got a guy named Carlos Rojas. He's gonna meet you tonight at six o'clock. The spot? David’s Cafe on Alton Road. You cool with that?" Vincent glanced at his watch, displaying the time as eleven thirty-five. "I believe I can make that work," he replied confidently, making his way to the living room and settling down on the sofa.
Giovanni assured Vincent that he would take care of the arrangements and encouraged him to keep in touch and ensure his phone remained charged, as the batteries drained quickly. The two bid their farewells before Vincent ended the call, gently placing the phone on the coffee table. As he relaxed on the couch, he kicked his feet up on the sofa's arm and let his thoughts wander to the upcoming meeting.

Chapter 3

Chapter 2: Cafe Connections

As the sun dipped below the horizon, engulfing the picturesque Miami skyline in a warm, golden glow, Vincent found himself behind the wheel of the luxurious Cadillac Convertible gifted to him by the Valentino Family. The wind swept through his hair as he cruised along the lively South Beach streets, savouring the vibrant energy that defined the evening scene. The sights and sounds of the iconic city enveloped him, infusing his senses with an exhilarating mixture of excitement and anxiety. That night, Vincent's journey from the prestigious Fontainebleau Hotel to the inconspicuous David's Cafe held a weighty purpose. The very thought of the impending encounter provoked a twinge of unease deep within him, as if the charm of the South Beach evening couldn't fully dispel the shadows and uncertainties that lay ahead.
As Vincent turned off from Dade Boulevard onto Alton Road, he felt a sense of unease in his stomach. He knew he was about to embark on a path with no possibility of turning back. Vincent arrived at the cafe and parked his car. Glancing at his watch, he noticed he was early, with fifteen minutes to spare. He reached into the glove box and retrieved the gun that Giovanni had provided him. After inspecting it, he tucked it into his waistband under his suit. Though not the most comfortable option, Vincent believed it would suffice until he could find a suitable holster.
Coming out of the car, Vincent could smell a faint hint of Cuban spices. As he inhaled deeply, he fought the urge to let his senses fully indulge in the culinary delights surrounding him. Tonight was not about indulgence; it was about focus and the meeting with Carlos. However, the alluring scents seemed to follow him, lightly dancing on the edges of his consciousness, threatening to distract him from his purpose. Ignoring the temptation, he straightened his suit, took a deep breath, and walked towards his rendezvous point, ready to meet Carlos and find out his intentions.
The vibrant scene unfolded before him as Vincent walked into David's Cafe. The cozy, dimly lit space had been adorned with vintage Cuban memorabilia, transporting him to a different era, while the sound of lively conversations mixed with the rhythmic beats of traditional music playing softly in the background. The walls, painted in warm earth tones, showcased vibrant paintings depicting scenes of Havana, evoking a sense of nostalgia and culture.
Taking a few steps further, Vincent's eyes were drawn to the bustling atmosphere of the cafe. The eclectic mix of patrons filled every available seat, their animated conversations accompanied by the clinking of silverware and the occasional burst of laughter. The waitstaff, dressed in traditional guayabera shirts, moved swiftly between tables, expertly balancing trays filled with steaming plates of fragrant dishes.
The aroma of freshly brewed Cuban coffee permeated the air, intertwining with the mouthwatering scents of roasted pork, fried plantains, and flavourful spices. The countertop, adorned with stacks of flaky pastelitos and perfectly rolled cigars, showcased the pride taken in offering authentic Cuban delicacies.
Scanning the room, Vincent's gaze would meet the warm, inviting smiles of both the staff and fellow patrons. Some were engaged in friendly debates while sipping on sweet cafecitos, others leaned back, basking in the ambience, enjoying the gentle sway of the music. The overall atmosphere was one of lively camaraderie and passionate appreciation for Cuban culture.
Vincent couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement, knowing that within these walls, important conversations were held, friendships were forged, and memories were made. As he took it all in, he was reminded once again of the significance of his meeting with Carlos.
Curiosity fueled Vincent's determination as he approached the bustling counter of David's Cafe Cafecito. The warm smile of the maître d' greeted him, and with a polite nod, he inquired about Carlos Rojas, indicating the significance of their meeting. The maître d', with a knowing look, guided Vincent through the maze of tables, expertly maneuvering around the lively conversations and tempting aromas.
As they weaved through the sea of patrons, Vincent couldn't help but notice the genuine connections being formed over plates of traditional cuisine. Glasses of refreshing mojitos clinked together, marking moments of celebration and camaraderie. Finally, the maître d' led Vincent to a secluded corner table where Carlos Rojas sat, engaged in animated discourse with another gentleman.
Carlos, a distinguished and charismatic figure, exuded an air of authority and warmth. His eyes lit up as he noticed Vincent's approach, welcoming him with a firm handshake and a genuine smile. "¡Hola amigo! You must be Mr. Sullivan, Giovanni has said buenos things about you. My condolences for the loss of your brother," the man said as Vincent took a seat across from him alongside the gentleman he had been talking to.
Vincent nodded gratefully at Carlos’ condolences. "Thank you, Mr. Rojas. It has been a challenging time for my family," Vincent replied, his voice filled with genuine appreciation. Carlos chuckled, almost spilling the bottle of tequila he had been nursing. "Nah, none of that Mr. Rojas shit, amigo. Just call me Carlos, like my friends do," he said, his Cuban accent adding a touch of charm. Leaning in closer, he continued, his voice softer and more earnest. "Alright, let's cut the bullshit and get down to business. That's why we're all here ain’t it?." Carlos asked rhetorically, placing his elbow on the table and making eye contact with Vincent. "You want the lowdown on Victor Torres's operation, right? Well, before we jump into that shit, I gotta ask for a little favour, amigo. Somethin' to prove you're trustworthy. Think you got what it takes?" Carlos asked eyeing Vincent up and down almost as if he were a piece of meat.
Meeting Carlos's intense gaze head-on, Vincent felt a surge of determination course through him. He understood that earning Carlos's trust would be essential in this line of business. "Carlos," Vincent affirmed, using the more familiar name, "I'm ready to prove myself. Whatever it takes to gain your trust and access to Victor Torres's network, I'm willing to do it." His voice exuded a newfound resolve, matching the intensity of Carlos's own. Vincent leaned in closer, mirroring Carlos's posture, as if to emphasize his commitment. "Just tell me what you need, and consider it done," Vincent declared with unwavering determination.
Carlos chuckled heartily as he reached for his bottle of tequila, taking a long, refreshing sip. “Amigo, I gotta say, your enthusiasm is infectious. But listen up, I wanna drop some knowledge on you: this here business demands more than just passion, you feel me?” he said, his voice dripping with charisma. Finishing the last drop of his tequila, he placed the bottle firmly on the table. “Now, let's talk about the favour I need from you.” Carlos gestured towards the man seated next to Vincent. "This is Mr. Diaz, my loyal compadre. He's got a secure lockup not too far from here, you know what I'm saying? We need someone dependable who is packin' heat to make sure his precious cargo gets delivered safely to where it needs to be tomorrow afternoon." he explained, snapping his fingers to summon a server who appeared with a meticulously rolled Cuban cigar for him.
The server graciously assisted Mr. Rojas by lighting the cigar before promptly returning to the kitchen. Mr. Rojas, a seemingly indulgent man, took a leisurely puff as the smoke elegantly departed from his mouth. Meanwhile, Vincent contemplated the proposal presented before him. "Just tell me the time and place, Mr. Diaz," he expressed to the silent individual seated next to him. Mr. Diaz flashed a smile and replied, "Tomorrow afternoon, 'round three-thirty, we meet at a little self-storage on Alton Road, just a short distance away from here ese." Simultaneously, he handed Vincent a manila envelope containing the documents and instructions. Vincent expressed his gratitude to Mr. Diaz for the information and proceeded to review the contents of the envelope, ensuring all was in order.
Mr. Diaz gracefully excused himself from the table, leaving Vincent to explore the envelope's contents. "Everythin' you need to know is right there, mi amigo. Along with a lil' down payment, consider it a gesture of my gratitude for your help tomorrow. Spend it as you see fit, maybe have a good time, eh?" Mr. Diaz paused for a moment to yawn, before continuing, weariness now apparent in his voice, "I ain't as young as I used to be, mi amigos. I reckon it's 'bout time for me to call it a night and retire, you know?" the elderly gangster remarked turning to Carlos, offering a firm handshake and assuring him they would speak the following day. His glance then shifted towards Vincent as he retrieved his coat from the back of the chair. With sincerity in his voice, he bid them farewell, "Take care, Mr. Rojas, and you, Mr. Sullivan. It was an absolute pleasure meetin' you. I'll be eagerly awaitin' our next encounter, mi amigo." With his words hanging in the air, he ventured out the cafe door and into the serene embrace of a balmy Miami night.
"Well, that just leaves you and me, kid," Carlos said as the elderly gangster left the restaurant. Vincent took a moment to absorb the weight of Mr. Diaz's departure before turning his attention back to Carlos.
"Yeah, looks like it's just us now," Vincent replied with a thoughtful expression. "I have to admit, Miami has been quite the whirlwind experience so far. From meeting you and Mr. Diaz to being thrown into this job."
Carlos nodded in agreement, his eyes reflecting a mixture of seriousness and caution. "You show promise, kid. I think that’s why Mr. Diaz is willing to bring you into our fold. But if you're going to infiltrate Victor Torres's operation, there's something you’re going to need."
Vincent leaned forward, his interest piqued. "What is it? What do I need?" Carlos reached into his coat pocket and handed Vincent a plain envelope. "Take a look at what's inside," he said, his voice tinged with mystery.
Vincent carefully opened the envelope and his eyes widened in surprise. Inside was a stack of papers—forged identification papers, a new driver's licence, and other crucial documents that outlined his new identity.
Carlos gestured towards the documents. "We've given you a new identity, kid. This is crucial for your safety and the success of our mission. If you want to infiltrate Torres's operation, you can't risk having your family name recognized. Torres might not know your face, but he will most likely remember your brother’s last name.”
A mix of determination and anger welled up within Vincent at the mention of his brother's name. "I won't let his death be in vain, Carlos. I'll do whatever it takes to bring Torres and his whole fucking network down."
Carlos nodded, acknowledging Vincent's determination. "I believe you, kid. But to succeed, we need to ensure that your name ain’t recognized. With this new identity, you should be invisible, allowing you to operate under the radar and strike when the time is right."
Vincent looked down at the documents in his hands, starting to understand the gravity of the situation. It wasn't just a fresh start; it was a new persona, a means to protect himself and exact the justice he desired. "I get it, Carlos. This new identity is more than just a name change. It's protection from Torres and anyone else who might try to uncover my true intentions."
Carlos placed a supportive hand on Vincent's shoulder. "Exactly, kid. You've got the idea. Just remember, this identity comes with its own responsibilities. It's not just about survival out here; it's about making calculated moves and leveraging every resource at your disposal."
Vincent looked up at Carlos, a fire burning in his eyes. "I won't let you down. With this new identity, I'll become a thing of Torres's nightmares."
Carlos offered an encouraging smile. "I like your attitude, kid. We're in this together now. You should possess most of the tools to face whatever lies ahead. Embrace this new identity, use it wisely, and strike fear into the hearts of those who would underestimate you."
As their discussion continued into the night, Vincent's determination solidified, aligning with his new identity. He knew the road ahead would be treacherous, but he was ready to walk it with unwavering resolve. With the weight of the envelope in his hands, Vincent would embrace his new persona as he prepared to unravel Victor Torres's operation.

Chapter 4

Chapter 3: The Calm

Vincent sat parked in the lot next to the bustling restaurant. The warm night air surrounded him as he turned the key in the ignition, starting the engine with a familiar rumble. Driving through the lively Miami streets, Vincent relished the brief journey back to his hotel. The neon lights and the vibrant energy of the city seemed to blend seamlessly with his newfound purpose. The cool night air tousled his hair as he soaked in the atmosphere, feeling a renewed sense of determination.
The drive back to the hotel was a relaxing moment of reflection for Vincent. His mind drifted to the meeting with Carlos and the weight of the mission that lay ahead. He understood the risks and challenges that awaited him, but he also knew the importance of his undertaking. This was his opportunity to dismantle Victor Torres' criminal network and avenge the injustice that had befallen his older brother.
With every minute that passed, Vincent felt his resolve strengthen. He knew that blending seamlessly into Torres' empire would demand a high level of skill, dedication, and razor-sharp instincts.
As he pulled into the Fontainebleau parking lot, Vincent felt a sense of calm wash over him. The familiar surroundings of the elegant hotel provided a temporary sanctuary within the turbulent world he now found himself in. Parking his car, he took a moment to collect his thoughts and reaffirm his commitment to his mission.
Vincent stepped out of the car, the warm night air enveloping him once more as he made his way towards the entrance of the hotel. Everything hinged on his ability to navigate the intricacies of Torres' operation without arousing suspicion. The weight of the task was immense, but Vincent was determined to succeed, to vanquish the shadows that had haunted his family.
Upon entering the hotel lobby, Vincent's mind whirled with potential plans and strategies. He knew the time for action was quickly approaching, and with each passing moment, his excitement grew. The next day would mark the official beginning of Carlos’ test, and he was ready to make an impression.
Vincent took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenges that lay ahead. As he approached the elevator, he could feel the weight of his new identity settling upon him. Dominic Heath, a used car sales agent from Connecticut turned career criminal, was his ticket to installing himself within Torres' criminal network, and he was ready to embody that persona.
With each step toward his hotel room, Vincent's pace quickened as he went over everything in his head. His new identity, the proximity to his target, and the support of Carlos gave him confidence in his abilities. As he opened the door to his room, he knew he was at the precipice of something significant—a chance to rewrite the narrative of his brother's tragic fate.
Vincent stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, plunging himself into the solitude of his thoughts. The moment of truth was upon him, and he was determined to seize it with unwavering resolve. Making his way to the bar, he began mixing himself a drink before lighting himself a cigarette and finally sitting down on the plush sofa in the penthouse’s living room.
Grabbing the remote off the table Vincent switched on the television, the screen flickered to life, revealing an episode of Magnum, P.I. As the familiar theme song played in the background, Vincent reached into his suit pocket and carefully retrieved the two envelopes he had received at the restaurant that evening. Placing them on the coffee table, he couldn't help but feel a sense of eagerness as he opened the one that contained his new identity.
‘Dominic Heath’ was not a name Vincent would have picked for himself and he knew it was going to take some getting used to. “Why did I have to be a used car sales agent though?” He asked out loud as he continued to flip through the documents from the envelope. The package even contained a driver's license and passport with photos of someone who vaguely resembled him.
With anticipation, Vincent placed the identification in his wallet. His attention then shifted to the other manila envelope given to him by Mr. Diaz earlier that night. Vincent eagerly opened the package and started examining its contents. Inside were some photos of the storage locker he would visit the next day, along with a piece of paper containing the address. Notably, there was a photo of an unfamiliar man Vincent assumed to be named 'Ramirez' as the name had been written in red felt pen on the back. Last, Vincent found a comprehensive set of notes for the upcoming job.
As Vincent carefully perused the notes, an unsettling realization washed over him. The contents of the manila envelope revealed what could be a perilous venture ahead - transporting a sizable cache of cocaine and weapons concealed in Mr. Diaz's car trunk. The destination of the drop-off was the Miami Beach Marina, conveniently located only a few minutes away from the storage locker. Vincent's eyes scanned the notes further, confirming his suspicions. The enigmatic 'Ramirez' from the photo was not only a new face, but he was also the designated contact person for the rendezvous at the marina. Ramirez was to orchestrate the unloading of the illicit cargo, resulting in the successful completion of the job.
As Vincent immersed himself in the notes, he unravelled Mr. Diaz's skepticism towards the man named Ramirez, a smuggler whom he had only recently employed. Mr. Diaz's written notes advised Vincent to exercise caution during his upcoming meeting with the man and to brace himself for any unforeseen circumstances. With a smile, Vincent savoured a sip of the meticulously prepared Old Fashioned, relishing the flavours that danced on his palate. He then reached for the ornate cigarette case snugly nestled in his suit's breast pocket, retrieving a cigarette to complement the moment.
Elegantly igniting the cigarette, Vincent drew a deep inhale, the smoke intertwining with his thoughts as he reclined on the couch. Addressing the vacant room with a poetic solemnity, he whispered, "Josh, can you see me now? I hope you're proud of me." Another deep drag from his cigarette punctuated his heartfelt sentiment.
In the background, the droning of the television persisted, transitioning from an episode of Magnum P.I. to an infomercial that gradually merged with Vincent's drowsiness, a consequence of the strenuous day he had endured. As Vincent took his final drag, he extinguished the cigarette in a nearby ashtray before reclaiming the remote from the table, silencing the voiceover of a man showing the amazing power of an exquisite set of knives. Rising from the couch, Vincent yawned, acknowledging the exhaustion that had settled upon him, and proceeded towards the alluring embrace of the penthouse's bedroom.

Chapter 4 - The South Beach Job

As the curtains allowed sunlight to gently seep in, casting playful rays upon Vincent's face, he gradually awakened. He struggled to recall the events leading to his slumber the night before but mustered the energy to rise from the bed. With weary eyes and a throbbing head, he shuffled towards his suitcase, retrieving his toothbrush and a bottle of Advil. Soon, he found himself in the bathroom, flicking on the lights. Standing before the mirror, he leaned over the sink, fighting back a wave of nausea stirred by the soft illumination of the room.
Shaking two of the pills from the bottle, Vincent swallowed them without water before dry heaving into the sink. “That’s the last time I drink top-shelf booze,” he said to himself as he wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth. Turning on the faucet, he began splashing his face with the cold water as he planned out his day. His first order of business was getting a holster so he no longer needed to carry his gun in his waistband.
Vincent stepped out onto the bustling streets, where the vibrant energy of the city swept over him. The palm trees swayed gently in the warm breeze as people strolled along the sidewalks, their colourful attire reflecting the spirit of the place. He navigated through the maze of eclectic shops, cafes, and themed bars, each exuding its unique charm. The architecture, with its pastel hues and art déco designs, transported him to another world.
Entering a discreet boutique known for its leather goods, Vincent was greeted by a knowledgeable shopkeeper. He shared his intention of acquiring a holster and was led towards a collection displayed meticulously on the wall. The shopkeeper explained the features and advantages of each design, showcasing the craftsmanship that made each piece unique and reliable.
After careful consideration, Vincent settled on a sleek, leather shoulder holster. Its sleek design provided comfort and easy accessibility, while its dark, rich hue added a touch of sophistication to his ensemble. With the leather strap slung over his shoulder, Vincent felt a sense of confidence, knowing that his gun was securely holstered, no longer tucked uncomfortably in his waistband.
Armed with his new acquisition, Vincent continued his journey through the vibrant city streets knowing he had some time to kill before meeting with Mr. Diaz. He explored hidden alleyways, vibrant markets, and lively cafes, absorbing the atmosphere of a place that thrived on art, music, and endless possibilities. The sound of street performers filled the air, merging with the laughter and conversations of individuals enjoying the magic of the moment.
As Vincent roamed the vibrant streets, he couldn't help but be enticed by the colourful array of artwork that adorned the walls. Intricate graffiti murals depicted stories of love, rebellion, and dreams, each stroke a testament to the artistic soul of the city. He found himself captivated by the talent and creativity that flowed freely, becoming an integral part of the urban landscape.
Entering a busy market, Vincent immersed himself in the lively mix of aromas and sounds. Stalls displayed an assortment of exotic fruits, vibrant flowers, and handcrafted trinkets. The air was alive with the vendor's calls, beckoning passerby to explore their enticing array of wares. Vincent couldn't resist indulging in the flavorful offerings of the local cuisine, savouring every bite as the flavours danced on his palate.
Seeking solace from the bustling streets, Vincent found refuge in a quaint café. With a steaming cup of Cuban coffee in hand, he watched as locals engaged in passionate conversations, their animated gestures a testament to their vibrant personalities. The rhythmic beats of Latin music drifted through the air, harmonizing with laughter and creating an infectious energy that lifted his spirits.
As the morning faded into the afternoon, Vincent returned to his car and made his way towards the agreed-upon meeting spot. Mr. Diaz, a well-connected individual, was central to Vincent's current mission. If he could prove himself to the old gangster, then he may stand a chance at proving himself to Carlos as well.
Arriving at the lockup twenty minutes early Vincent sat in his car parked across the street, scoping out the lockup before driving in to meet with Mr. Diaz. As Vincent observed the lockup through the tinted windows of his car, the scorching rays of the sun cast an intense glow upon the worn façade of the main building. The bustling atmosphere of the afternoon seemed to fade into the periphery as his focus sharpened on the nondescript structure, holding within its walls the future of his enterprise.
As beads of perspiration trickled down Vincent's brow, he knew that the burden of safeguarding Mr. Diaz’s cargo from the authorities had to take priority as the imminent meeting at the lockup lay in wait, a convergence of destinies poised to reshape the nefarious landscapes of Miami.
The grandeur of the city's neon-lit streets, typically vibrant and alluring, seemed to dim against the stark reality of the task at hand. Vincent's gaze shifted from his reflection in the rearview mirror, contemplating the gravity of the situation. The lockup stood as a temporal threshold, an abode of secrecy that held both threat and promise in equal measure.
Taking a deep breath, Vincent emerged from the confines of his vehicle, his footsteps resonating with a sense of purpose upon the scalding pavement. The rhapsody of the city’s afternoon symphony, a medley of car horns and bustling chatter, faded in the background as he approached the lockup with measured strides.
As he neared the entrance, the worn façade of the building seemed to blend seamlessly with the shadows that danced beneath the midday sun. It was within these walls that the fate of his future endeavours would be sealed, and Vincent couldn't help but contemplate the web of alliances and dangers that lay before him.
With each heartbeat, the anticipation within Vincent intensified, the weight of his responsibility merging with the oppressive heat of the afternoon. The meeting, a delicate waltz between trust and treachery, awaited him beyond the threshold of the lockup. It was a dance he was prepared to navigate with grace, his mind set on protecting Mr. Diaz’s assets, preserving their arrangement, and unravelling the mystery of Ramirez's loyalty.
At that moment, amidst the scorching heat and elongated shadows cast by the sun, Vincent purposefully stepped into the refreshing atmosphere of the air-conditioned main office. He steeled himself, ready to confront the challenges and uncertainties that lay ahead. At the front desk stood a portly, middle-aged man with a receding hairline, who seemed to be in his fifties. A small stain of mysterious origin adorned the left breast of his tank top.
The melodious tune of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" drifted from a nearby radio, filling the room with its catchy melody as Vincent approached the desk. "Good afternoon. I was wondering if you could direct me to locker four eighteen?" he inquired. The man absentmindedly scratched his greasy hair before glancing down at a sprawling map of the lot on the desk. "Uh, that's right by the entrance, take a left, follow the road to its end, and it'll be on your left," he responded, his attention quickly returning to the small television placed behind his desk.
Vincent made his way back to his car, gracefully opening the door and stepping inside. As he followed the employee's misguided directions, he eventually found the locker he had been seeking. Parking his car outside the lockup, Vincent was greeted by the warm smile of Mr. Diaz, the elderly gentleman puffing leisurely on a cigar. Extended his hand towards Vincent Mr. Diaz expressed his pleasure in seeing him, using the unfamiliar alias of Dominic for the first time. Vincent, slightly taken aback by the new name, shook the old man's hand as he continued speaking. "Ah, mi amigo, unfortunately, mi compadre who was supposed to guide you to the marina won't be joinin' us, you see?" he said.
Mr. Diaz paused, casually taking out a pocket watch from the breast pocket of his suit jacket and checking the time before resuming. "Since Miguel won't be able to accompany us, I believe it best if I personally accompany you to the docks, mi amigo. It ain't far, but you newcomers, you can easily get lost in this city, you know?"
Vincent felt a moment of hesitation upon considering Mr. Diaz's presence for the job, but he realized he had little choice in the matter. "Follow me," Mr. Diaz said, with a touch of authority. "I've already taken the liberty, mi amigo, of loadin' the cargo into my armoured car," he added, extinguishing his cigar before casually disposing of it on the ground. "In this line of work amigo, ya can nevah be too cautious. It's always smart to invest in some top-tier protection if ya catch my drift." He finished, leading Vincent away from the relentless sun, Mr. Diaz guided him into the cool, dimly lit locker.
Pulling back the tarp on a concealed vehicle, Mr. Diaz revealed a sleek, jet-black Chevrolet Impala, meticulously fortified with armour plating on all sides. The windows appeared to be reinforced to ensure utmost security. With an amused chuckle, Mr. Diaz tossed the keys to Vincent, confidently taking his place in the passenger seat. "Vamos, mi amigo, let's embark on this journey. Ramirez ain't gonna wait around forever," Mr. Diaz remarked, as Vincent settled into the driver's seat.
Navigating them onto Alton Road, Vincent dutifully followed Mr. Diaz's directions as they made their way toward the marina. Along the way, the seasoned gangster leisurely ignited another cigar, all while effortlessly turning on the car's radio. To Vincent's surprise, the familiar tune of "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper filled the airwaves, emanating from the carefully adjusted dial.
As they drove, a harmonious camaraderie enveloped the car, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The melodic sounds of Cyndi Lauper's vocals filled the car, prompting both Vincent and Mr. Diaz to intermittently nod their heads in silent appreciation. After a few minutes of cruising down the vibrant main road, Mr. Diaz guided Vincent onto the street that led to the esteemed Miami Beach Marina.
Vincent pulled into an empty parking spot as Mr. Diaz reclined in his seat, “This is the place amigo. Ramirez oughta be waitin' with his float plane down by the docks. So whaddya say, why don'tcha be a pal and give 'im a heads up 'bout our arrival?” The elderly man remarked with a calm demeanour as he took gentle puffs from his cigar. Vincent acknowledged him with a nod, "Absolutely, I'll be right back Mr. Diaz." With those words, he gracefully stepped out of the vehicle and strolled towards the docks.
The cool breeze brought in by the sea was a refreshing change from the blistering hot sun Vincent had experienced seemingly nonstop since stepping foot off the plane into Miami. Lighting a cigarette as he made his way along the walkway, he reflected on everything that had led to this moment as he kept his eye out for Ramirez and his plane.
The distant cries of seagulls filled the air as Vincent caught sight of the plane and began making his way towards the tall, bald figure standing beside it–none other than Ramirez, as identified from the photo. Vincent approached him cautiously and inquired, "Are you Ramirez?" With a sneer, Ramirez turned to face Vincent and retorted, "And who the fuck is askin', amigo?" His Colombian accent lingered with a hint of intrigue.
Vincent, although surprised by the man's initial brusque tone, maintained his composure and responded, "Dominic Heath, an associate of Mr. Diaz." He extended his hand towards Ramirez in a gesture of courtesy. However, disregarding the handshake, Ramirez simply spat at the ground, removed his sunglasses, and locked eyes with Vincent. "Yeah, whatever, man," he muttered, his annoyance still clear. "I'll have my compadres unload the vehicle. Meet me back here in fifteen fuckin’ minutes." Ramirez said as he motioned to the two men standing beside him while conveying his instructions.
Ramirez's associates embarked on their journey towards the parking lot, while Vincent's gaze fell upon the sight of Mr. Diaz gracefully strolling along the docks. The vibrant crimson of his suit served as a spectacle, radiating like a guiding light amidst the sun's rays. “Everything ok amigo?” The old man inquired as he finally reached Vincent, his body looking more frail now than it had when they started their journey. Vincent nodded, “Besides your associate Ramirez needing an attitude adjustment, his men should be unloading your car as we speak.” Mr. Diaz let out a soft chuckle before responding, "He's just a mere means to an end, ya know, nothin' more. Unfortunately, I reckon I won't have much business with him once this day is through."
Taking in the surroundings, Mr. Diaz felt a slight tremble in his legs as he exclaimed, "Damn, amigo, my legs are about to give out on me. Gettin' old is a load of shit, let me tell ya. How 'bout we wait indoors for Ramirez and his asociados to wrap things up?" Understanding his discomfort, Vincent graciously guided the aging man inside, providing relief from the relentless Miami sun for them both.

Chapter 5 - The Storm

After their brief respite, Vincent and Mr. Diaz returned to the docks, ready to meet with Ramirez and finalize the deal. The sun, now casting a gentle glow in the sky, provided a serene backdrop as the two men leisurely walked along the boardwalk toward where Ramirez's plane had been docked. As they approached, Vincent couldn't shake a peculiar sense that something wasn't quite right about the situation, though he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Dismissing his doubts for the time being, they proceeded to Ramirez and his associates, who sat by the fully loaded plane, engaged in conversations while puffing on cigarettes.
Mr. Diaz extended a hand to Ramirez, expressing his gratitude, "It's been a real pleasure workin' with ya, amigo. I got  some trust in ya to make sure that cargo gets safely to my compadres out there in international waters, ya know?" They shook hands earnestly before Mr. Diaz and Vincent began their journey back to the car, Vincent still unable to shake off his uneasy feeling.
Suddenly, from behind them, the sound of a gun cocking rang out as Ramirez's voice resonated, "Hey, viejo! El Diablo Rojo got a message for ya, stupid puta, You shouldn’t have fucked with him!" Vincent instinctively reacting, leaping in front of Mr. Diaz to shield him from harm as he swiftly drew his own concealed gun from beneath his suit. Firing back at Ramirez, he ended his life in an instant. The remaining associates of the deceased smuggler exchanged wary glances, gradually lowering their weapons, realizing that their benefactor was no longer in a position to continue paying for their services.
Vincent, wounded, lay on the ground, his hand clutching the area where the bullet had struck him as Mr. Diaz knelt beside him, genuinely concerned, "Damn, amigo. I never expected you'd take a bullet for an old man like me. Are you alright, kid?" he inquired. Vincent reached into his suit pocket and retrieved the cigarette case, now marred with a dent where the bullet had deflected. A hint of humour mixed with his laboured breathing as he responded, "Seems like smoking might've just saved my life this time."
Regaining his footing, Vincent reached for a cigarette from the case before tucking it back into his suit's inner pocket. Mr. Diaz produced a lighter and graciously lit the cigarette for him before speaking, "You saved my life, amigo. I knew Ramirez was crooked, but I never expected him to be a damn vendido. Don't worry though, I'll have one of my associates take care of this mess. Luckily, the docks ain't too crowded today, so we won't have to worry 'bout too many questions or greasing palms." The old man chuckled as he extracted a cigar, lighting it up and continuing, "I got another reliable smuggler I can call to handle the cargo. Once I offer him Ramirez’s plane as a bonus, I’m sure he'll be more than willing to lend a hand. And you, Mr. Heath, I can't thank you enough. I'll contact my men in Mr. Torres' network to see if there's any way I can help you out."
Finishing his sentiments, Mr. Diaz extended his hand towards Vincent's, his grip strong and determined. With a reassuring gesture, he placed his other hand on Vincent's shoulder. "I see a bright future for you in Miami, mi amigo. Please take the car back to your hotel—I'll send someone to collect it later and return yours. As for your payment, that can be found in the glove box of the car we arrived in. And remember, I'll be in touch soon," he said with a comforting smile. With that, Mr. Diaz promptly withdrew into the office where they had once awaited Ramirez, leaving only the smell of his Cuban cigar lingering in the air.
Vincent took a calming breath and exhaled, preparing himself for the drive ahead. As he made his way towards the parking lot, the events of the past hour played like a vivid movie in his mind. The surge of adrenaline was subsiding, leaving a throbbing ache from where he had been struck. Reaching the familiar car they had arrived in, Vincent settled into the driver's seat and started the ignition, ready to embark on his journey back to the hotel. As if on cue, a refreshing rain began to sprinkle down, washing away the tension that had weighed on him since he landed in Miami.
Driving down the main road, Vincent observed the bustling city streets, teeming with people from diverse backgrounds, each with their unique destination. In an attempt to calm his racing thoughts, he reached out and turned on the radio. A delightful advertisement started playing, highlighting a tempting new burger and fries combo at a fast-food restaurant. The upbeat jingle soon faded into the soothing melody of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears For Fears. Vincent found himself gently nodding his head in sync with the sombre rhythm, the music lending a brief respite from the world he found himself in.
Arriving at the hotel parking lot, Vincent turned off the engine, plunging himself into a momentary silence. He opened the car door, leaving the keys nestled within the visor for whoever was coming to pick up the vehicle. Retrieving the envelope of money from the glove compartment, he closed the car door and took a deep breath before walking to the hotel lobby, letting the rain wash over him.
The hotel lobby glowed warmly, filled with a bustling mix of weekend tourists eager to check-in. Vincent felt relieved that he had arrived midweek, avoiding the crowding rush. Navigating his way through the lively crowd, he skillfully made his way towards the elevator. Just as he was about to reach his destination, the friendly hotel clerk who had assisted him before noticed him and waved him over.
"Oh, monsieur Heath!" the clerk called out, a warm smile on his face. "A monsieur Rojas had the courtesy to leave a message in your absence this afternoon. He requests you to return his call promptly upon return to your room. I have taken the initiative to write down his contact information for you, monsieur." With a graceful gesture, the clerk handed Vincent an exquisitely folded piece of paper before returning to the front desk to help others in need. Vincent placed the paper gently in the breast pocket of his jacket, intrigued by the thought of why Carlos could have been trying to reach him.
Finally reaching the penthouse, Vincent let out a sigh of relief, feeling the weight of the day slowly lifting off his shoulders. In the serenity of the bedroom, he decided to take a moment for himself. With a cigarette in hand, he changed into more comfortable attire, slipping into a pair of soft sweatpants and a cozy t-shirt. Delicately extracting the piece of paper, given to him by the hotel clerk, from his suit pocket, he neatly placed his garments on an armchair nearby before returning to the spacious and inviting living room.
On the polished coffee table, he found the phone sitting patiently. Unfolding the paper, he dialled the hastily scrawled number, eager to connect with Carlos. As he settled onto the plush couch, he nonchalantly propped his feet up on the table, savouring one final exhale of his cigarette before gently extinguishing it in the ashtray positioned on the adjacent end table.
Carlos answered on the second ring, Vincent recognized his familiar voice. "Ey, mijo, you've reached Carlos. Who's this?" he greeted, his charming accent resonating through the phone line. Vincent responded with a mix of caution and curiosity, "Hey Carlos, it's Vincent. The clerk downstairs mentioned you called earlier, and I'm sorry for missing it. I wanted to return it as soon as I got in. What's going on?"
A chuckle emanated from the other end of the line as Carlos replied, "Ah, amigo, gracias for hittin' me up so quick. Mr. Diaz reached out to me not long ago, and let me tell you, he couldn't stop singing your praises 'bout the job you did today. Eres un verdadero asesino, showcasing those exceptional habilidades of yours. That ain't no small feat, let me tell ya," Vincent, finding solace in the compliments, lit another cigarette from the pack left on the table beside him, allowing the familiar aroma to soothe his senses.
"It wasn’t anything, Carlos. I couldn't let some lowlife smuggler take a shot while the old man had his back turned," Vincent said modestly, a puff of smoke swirling above him as he leaned back on the couch, the phone pressed against his ear. "Well, my friend, in our line of work, moves like that don't go unnoticed, and let me tell you, amigo, Mr. Diaz definitely took notice today," Carlos responded, his voice laced with evident pride.
"Currently, he's reaching out to his contacts in Torres' network. But in the meantime, he wanted to know if you'd be interested in lending him a hand with a little issue that came up during your recent job. Does the name El Diablo Rojo ring a bell?" Carlos inquired, as a sudden chill emanated from Vincent's spine,
"Yes, Ramirez dropped that name right before he attempted to take a shot at Mr. Diaz," Vincent replied, a trace of unease apparent in his voice. There was a brief pause on the line before Carlos resumed speaking. "Javier Vega, amigo, he's a fairly notorious Colombian drug lord, got the local cops callin' him El Diablo Rojo, The Red Devil. He and Mr. Diaz, they've had a long, history, but a few years back, shit went south real quick and now it's pretty fuckin’ obvious that Javier wants to see Mr. Diaz pushin' up daisies,"
Vincent's mind raced as he processed the gravity of the situation. Javier Vega, the infamous El Diablo Rojo, had set his sights on Mr. Diaz, someone Vincent had come to respect during his short time working with him. "What does Javier want with Mr. Diaz? And why now?" Vincent pondered aloud, trying to make sense of the dangerous game they had suddenly found themselves in.
"Well, word on the street is that Javier believes Mr. Diaz betrayed him and sold him out to the feds a while back. From what I've gathered, tensions between them have been simmering for years, but Javier's thirst for revenge seems to have reached a boiling point," Carlos explained with a hint of concern in his voice. Vincent sighed as he put his cigarette out in the nearby ashtray and began making his way to the kitchen. “Just tell me how I can help Carlos!” He said as he grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it from the sink.
Carlos’ laugh boomed through the phone loud and clear as Vincent had to hold the speaker away from his ear, "Hah! I knew there was somethin' 'bout ya I liked, amigo," Carlos' gravelly voice rumbled through the phone like an old Chevy. "Let's cut the bullshit and set ourselves up a meetin', you, me, and Mr. Diaz. How about this Tuesday? We'll rendezvous at the Versailles Restaurant, right in the heart of Little Havana. Perfect spot for some business. Oh, and let me tell ya, amigo, their Picadillo is divine, absolutely to die for!" Carlos exclaimed with enthusiasm.
Vincent couldn't help but chuckle, finding himself swept up in the infectious energy of Carlos' voice. "Carlos, my friend, you truly have a remarkable ability to turn even business into an enjoyable affair," he responded. His mouth salivating at the thought of food, "Let's mark it down for Tuesday then. We'll meet at the Versailles Restaurant in the heart of Little Havana. I must say, Carlos, if that Picadillo is as remarkable as you claim, it will undoubtedly be an experience to savour." With warm goodbyes exchanged, Vincent hung up the phone, feeling a sense of anticipation building within him as he eagerly awaited their rendezvous.
