Chapter 1

AUTHOR'S NOTE: PROLOGUE AND CHAPTER 1 WILL BE COMBINED.

Prologue

"Derek, we are going to be late for our appointment!"
Jade was just a few weeks pregnant, and she felt confident that this little bundle of joy would make it this time.
"Do this for me, God." She prayed softly, "Help me save my marriage."
She placed her hand on her stomach, feeling the soft flutters she's been accustomed to. She had recently taken a pregnancy test, and she wasn't surprised. Derek and Jade have been trying, and getting pregnant wasn't the problem. The doctors say that her uterus is too weak, but Jade refuses to give up. She did all she could to strengthen her pelvic floor. From Kegel's exercises to changing her eating habits, she worked hard to optimize their chances.
"Here I come," Derek called.
Jade smiled brightly, having a good feeling.
The jelly was cold per usual, and the sterile examination room smell made Jade a bit queasy, but she practiced her breathing exercises to keep the bile at bay.
"So, Doc, what do you see?" Derek broke the silence.
Doctor Johnson has been there through all the miscarries and the emotional distress the couple has experienced, and she hated being the bearer of bad news. The couple couldn't catch a break, and she was afraid that this would break them...especially Jade.
Jade could sense that Derek was anxious to get this over with, and if she were, to be honest, so was she. Doctor Johnson cleaned Jade's stomach before facing them with a somber look that immediately broke Jade's heart. Derek just shook his head and left the room.
"Derek!" Jade called, but to no avail. He kept walking, "Doc?"
"Jade, I'm so sorry." Doctor Johnson muttered, "Maybe you guys should start to look at other ways to bring a child into this world.
"What's wrong with the baby?"
"Have you heard of an ectopic pregnancy?"

Don't treat me like no angel
You know that I can be a lot to handle
When I'm high off of you...
High off of you
High off of you
High off of you
Oh you do me like I'm your drug...

Leaving her vanity, she rolled onto her bed to grab her phone. Answering it without looking at the caller ID, "Wind down and speak your mind! This is Jade."
"Girl, come out tonight!"
Jade recognized the voice, and a smile immediately graced her face. Aaliyah was one of the many friends Jade met while in graduate school. They were taking the same writing course and noticed each other immediately. The two were rivals throughout high school and soon after became unlikely friends.
"Aaliyah, girl, leave me alone. I don't feel like going out. I want to eat ice cream and watch The Game!"
"Jade, it's been years since you've gotten out with us, and it's starting to get a bit scary. It's time to get back out on the scene, even if it's just to have a good time with your girls. You know what gets ready. If you ain't ready by the time we get there, I'ma break my foot in that fat ass of yours!" Shouted the voice of what seemed to be Imani, my next best friend, from the background.
Imani was the most eccentric one out of all of them. She's all about speaking her mind and not caring who doesn't like it. Imani is the person you call on when you need a partner to come and fuck some shit up. Let's just say how they met landed them both a night in jail.
"Damn! Why can't y'all just let me live!" Jade huffed, "I'll be ready."
"Yaya!" Imani screamed.
Jade rolled her eyes, shaking her head. As much as she wanted to stay home, she knew Imani was right. Jade hadn't been out with friends in God knows how long, and it was about that time that she spent some time with the girls. She felt she'd regret her decision but couldn't help her excitement.
I deserve this. She thought.
"Bye, girl," Aaliyah replied, laughing before hanging up.
She smiled slightly, got out the bed, and entered her closet, hangers filled with many articles of clothing. From dresses to streetwear hung neatly on each side of the closet. She was a clothes and shoe fanatic. Running her hands across her clothes, she decided on a short silver dress and silver peep-toe pumps. Placing them on the bed, she got into the shower and lathered up. Satisfied, she clambered out of the tub and allowed herself to air dry. After rubbing Cocoa Butter into her skin, she slid into her favorite pair of lingerie. Removing her headscarf, she sat back at her vanity and peered at herself in the mirror.
Repeatedly she affirmed: You are beautiful. You are intelligent. You are successful. You are worth it.
She left her face bare, deciding on mascara, eyeliner, and clear lip gloss. Winking at herself, she began to touch up her edges. Her knotless braids were still fresh, and she enjoyed how they graced her back and made her look younger than she was. She smiled at herself, feeling her best. It's been a while since she's felt normal. Flashes of her past self crossed her mind, but she shook them away. Nothing was going to stop her from going out tonight, not even her mind. Slipping into her dress, she went and stood in front of her full-body mirror and was pleased with what she saw.
I wish I felt this way about myself every day. She thought. Life would be easier.
Hearing the doorbell, Jade grabs her silver clutch and steps into her pumps before gliding down the stairs to answer the door to reveal my two besties.
"Well, took you long enough," Imani smiled, pulling me into a hug.
"Can I get a hug too?! Damn, always leaving me out," Huffed Aaliyah, hugging Jade from behind.
Jade smiled, pulling back, "Where is the rest of the crew?"
"Well, the girls are going to meet us there," Aaliyah replied, looking at Jade fully, "Girl, I see you!"
"I told you she was going to come and slay." Imani winked.
Jade giggled, smiling brightly, deciding to accept the compliment. Before she could open her mouth to return the love, they rushed her to Imani's Nissan Altima.
"Where are we going exactly?" Jade asked, slightly concerned.
"To the Black Onyx," Aaliyah said from the passenger seat.
"Never heard of it...." Jade inquired, scooting forward, resting both hands on the shoulders of the passenger and driver seat.
"Maybe because you've been stuck under a rock these past couple of months." Imani jests, causing Jade to stick her tongue out at her.
"It's a new lounge that opened up and today is their grand opening," Aaliyah adds.
"So, how are we getting in? There's a lot of us...you got us a section?" Jade wondered.
"Don't worry about that, sweetheart. Just know I got us covered." Imani wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, making Jade laugh.
"Well, let's go get hype then! Tonight, I'm not the designated driver; I'm finna get drunk until I drop and get laid!" Jade exclaimed, causing the girls to cheer.
I laughed, shaking my head. Tonight is going to be interesting.

Chapter 2

Stepping out of the car, Jade turned to her left and saw the rest of crewdettes pulling right next to them. Jade turned to the sound of squealing and knew exactly who it belonged to see Naveah and Aniyah running towards her. With a bright smile, she readied herself for their embrace.
"Girl, we missed you!" They gushed, hugging a laughing Jade.
"Where have you been?" Naveah asked, pulling back to look at me.
"Yeah, it's like you disappeared off the face of the earth." Aniyah huffed, pulling back and crossing her arm across her breast.
Jade met the two sisters on a business trip to California. She was attending a woman's leadership conference just to be surrounded by other like-minded women. She wouldn't consider herself an Alpha female but she wasn't opposed to learning, however, she purposely stayed away from anything that had to do with being center stage; nevertheless, she understood the importance of having a wide variety of friends with different backgrounds surrounding her. She knew someday she'd need someone who'd take charge where she wouldn't.
"Y'all know I've been busy. The office has been hectic, and for some reason, people have been pumping out more books this year more than ever. I think COVID has shifted some people's focus. So I've been doing nothing but helping these authors nonstop. I wasn't purposely putting y'all on the back burner. Life has just been life-ing," Jade explained, giving half-truths.
In reality, Jade hadn't been the same since her failed marriage with her ex-fiance Derek. She tried to put herself back out there, but to her, it wasn't worth it anymore. No one wanted to settle down with someone who couldn't do the one thing she was designed to do. Her relationships never went past dating; honestly, she couldn't blame them. So, she did the one thing she knew how to do: work. She didn't want to do anything else, and she was fine with that.
"You better have an excuse," Aaliyah mumbled, closing the car door behind her and hugging the two ladies.
I should stop neglecting my friends, but they need boyfriends to pass the time. Jade rolled her eyes. They'll be alright.
"I'm ready to party! I hope y'all ready 'cause I'm going all in!" Imani yelled, coming around the car to kiss Aniyah and hug Naveah.
"I'll be damn!" Jade exclaimed, looking at all her friends, "Y'all slaying tonight! Can I take a look at y'all before we go in? Do a lil spin for me."
They laughed, twirling around. Jade sighed, smiling. She couldn't deny that she had missed them. Taking in their attires, they were uniquely beautiful. Together, Jade and her crew of ladies left no room for self-consciousness. There was no denying their beauty; they would be the night's talk. Jade could feel the stares now, and she was beginning to feel young again. All this adulting made her feel twice her age, and she was only in her late 20s. She decided that she would have fun tonight and let loose.
I deserve this. Jade convinced herself. I deserve to be free.
"Well, let's go slay," Imani exclaimed, pulling us towards the booming building with bright lights.
Entering the building, Jade was immediately pulled towards the bar. The group was automatically greeted with a cheeky smile from Michael, the bartender.
"Hello, ladies. What brought you here on this wonderful night." He asked, cleaning out a shot glass.
"Today is a special occasion. We haven't seen our homegirl in forever, so we dragged our workaholic best friend out of the office to get drunk and laid for the first time in months." Aniyah explained, causing Jade to gawk in embarrassment.
"All she does is read and write. Tell her she needs to have some fun." Imani chimed
"Y'all shut up! Y'all ain't have to say allat." Jade groaned, "I can tell that I'ma need a shot of tequila already."
Michael chuckled, "Well, you came to the right place. What would you guys like?"
"May I have Coke and Rum, please, to start and that shot?" Jade requested, taking a seat on the barstool.
"And can I have a coconut Ciroc?" Aniyah piped, placing her clutch on the bar.
"A Balkan?" Imani questioned, peering at him under her lashes.
"You think you can handle that? That's the seventh strongest liquor known." Michael joked, sizing Imani up.
"The sixth if you wanna be technical, and yes, I know that Mikey Mike." Imani jabbed, smirking, licking her lips.
He shook his head, mumbling something about "fine ass" before grabbing our orders.
"Well, we'll both have Grey Goose to start," Aaliyah stated for her and Naveah after some contemplation.
"Coming right up," Michael answered before whisking away to make our drinks.
"I like him," Imani stated after a moment of silence.
We all turned to her and burst out laughing.
"We noticed." The four of us concluded.

Jade could feel her buzz heighten as she quickly made her way to the dance floor. Her favorite song, Sex You by Bando Jones, began to play, causing her body to move on its own accord. Wanting to feel another body against her own, she made eye contact with a random guy staring at her from the time she walked into the club. She would have been instantly turned off if she were sober, but tonight she could care less. She knew she wasn't going home with him, so none mattered. Tomorrow she'd be back on schedule. Living her normal and mundane life...just how she liked it. Of course, there were other eyes on her, and it caused the hairs on her neck to rise, but she refused to bring attention to it. In her mind, she translated it as she was the life of the party, and looks were the result of her seductive dance. She enjoyed her dance partner until the song was done, and her feet were aching. Making her way off the dance floor, she saw her smirking friends and chuckled. As Jade got closer to them, her creepy dance partner pulled her to a halt.
Politely, she asked, "Yes?"
"Hey, lil mama, can I smash?" He slurred.
"Um, excuse me?" All fun went out the door and was replaced with instant regret.
"I'm saying. Shit, the way you were dancing on me, ion see what the problem is? Don't tell me you some tease? " He bit his bottom lip, cocking his head to the side.
Jade opened her mouth to cuss this light skin nigga out, but Aaliyah was ready for all the smoke. One thing about the people Jade considered her friends, they had her back no matter what, and she was constantly reminded why they were a team.
"And the fuck you think you are talking to my sista like that?" Aaliyah asked, hands on her hips and eyebrows raised.
Jade felt the rest of her friends flank her at each side, ready for whatever. He turned beet red, and if this moment weren't so hectic, Jade would take the chance and laugh but settled for a cocked eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest. It was embarrassing that Jade couldn't believe she was in this situation...she could feel second-hand embarrassment.
"Bitch, do you know who you talking to? I ain't these regular niggas that you be dealing with. I'll beat yo ass," He sneered, taking a threatening step forward.
"Fuck you finna do?! You about shit!" Naveah easting him, rolling her neck.
"Yeah, the fuck! We ain't scared of you, nigga." Aniyah barked, speaking with her hands.
"First of all, who the fuck are you calling a bitch? Like be for real, you need to take yo bum ass back to where you came from."
Imani's words broke the camel's back, and before the group could realize what was happening, this man had put his hands on Imani and grabbed Jade, yanking her into his chest. She struggled against his hold, ordering him to let her go. Sounds of pain and fear filled the building, and Jade noticed that Imani was out cold. The ladies were trying to shake Imani awake, but it seemed as if nothing was working.
"Let me go, bro. You doing way too much for no reason, dawg." Jade growled, not allowing her fear to cause her to panic.
"Bitch I gotchu now. The fuck you gonna do? You're coming home with me, baby." He whispered in her ear.
Becoming aware of what is happening near the dance floor, Mike comes around the corner of the bar to the scene. He moves to assist Jade but is directed to tend to Imani and their friends by this other man that reeked with authority and dominance. Jade shivered and nearly turned into putty under his gaze. She could tell by his eyes that what was happening to her was the root of his anger. If looks could kill Jade's assailant would be buried 6 feet deep.
"Let her go." He ordered, coldly.
"How 'bout you mind your business. This ain't got shit to do with you."
"Just let her go, man." Michael grounded out, picking up Imani from the group of best friends.
"Anything that happens under this roof is my business. So, you got one last chance. Let her go."
"Who is you to tell me what the fuck I can and can't do? You ain't 'bout to do shit. It's a free country out this bitch and if I say she's coming home with me, that's what it's finna be.." This woman abuser states.
By this time, a crowd was beginning to circulate and Jade was scared shitless. She was close to taking matters into her own hands and try to break out of this man's hold. She could tell that he had a few drinks and that he was a bit unsteady so at any point she was willing to risk it.
Michael looked like he was having a mental battle whether he should beat the shit out of this guy or get help for Imani but Amir had already made his move.
"Go get her help!" Amir commanded, breaking the nose of Jade's attacker, causing his grip to loosen.
Jade immediately ran to safety, leaving the scene behind her. .
"See! Something said I should have stayed home! I should have listened!" Jade wailed, tears rolling down her face.
The sisters were cuddling up against each other. Jade could see how shaken they were by all these. Imani was beginning to awaken in Mike's arms, which was a relief and Aaliyah mascara was running from the tears. In a nutshell. tonight was a fucking shit show.
"Michael, I'll leave the rest to you," Jade told him, exhausted, "Tonight has proven that even though there are fucked up people in the world there are still some good men out there."
"Eh, what about you?" Asked the group.
"I'm just gonna take a walk. I don't think being in a car can help me clear my head." She replied.
"I don't think that's a good idea." Naveah replied, softly.
"Well I didn't think leaving my place of solidarity was a good idea but then no one listens to me so right now I really don't care." Jade responds, shooting a crying Aaliyah a look before walking to the nearest liquor store.
Michael made no move to stop her fearing it would cause more trouble than it was worth. He did however contact Amir to let him know that Jade was on foot. It was late and he knew that anything could happen to her and it would be on his conscience if he didn't speak up. Amir would definitely have his head.
"Everything is going to be okay, ladies. I called my friend and he will make sure that your friend is safe. Now, let's get you all taken care of. I know tonight was a lot. Some rest will do y'all some good." Michael stated, taking charge of the situation, making them feel safe.

Reaching there Jade opened the door to the liquor store and stumbled in. Going to the back, she picked up a bottle of whiskey before cashing out. Walking down the sidewalk, she began to weep.
. Why does this have to happen to me? She thought. I can never be happy without something terrible happening. It must be my destiny.
Tripping over her heels, she fell to the cement, scrapping her knees and hands. Deciding it was best to sit, she cracked the bottle open and began to down the bottle to its very last drop. Belching, she tossed the glass and after some time proceeded to stand up on achy feet. At some point, she took off her heels and began to walk back in the direction she came, unsure of where she was heading. As she came up on a familiar bend in the road, a car rolled up next to her.
"Are you lost?" The deep, masculine voice asked, windows rolled down so Jade could peer in to see who she was talking to.
She couldn't help but gasp at the voice. She recognized it from the lounge and all the memories she was drowning away were seeping back into her mind but she refused to look weak.
"Ma'am?" Amir questioned, gaining her attention.
"Uh, no I'm walking about to Black Onyx and I think it's...well I guess I am lost." I replied, confused on how I lost direction.
"Well get in." He ordered, opening the door for Jade.
"How do I know you're not some serial killer or something?" She hiccuped, the alcohol was giving her gas.
Sarcastically, he said, "The same serial killer that beat the brakes off that nigga for putting his hands on you?"
Jade had enough energy to roll her eyes, "You didn't have to say allat. If you didn't know, trust doesn't give you nothing more than a world of pain."
"Where to?" He wondered, ignoring her comment
"Home." She stated, "Sorry I ruined your grand opening. You got a nice spot, though."
"Where's home? You didn't ruin shit. That punk ass nigga got what was coming to him.." He replied, "I'm sorry that you had to experience that. No woman should ever have to go through anything of the sort. Today will be the last time he ever thinks about putting his hands on women. Period."
Jade was turned on by his words but decided to keep it as classy as the alcoholism would allow. She crossed her legs and worked to put her seatbelt on.
Hopefully, this will keep me from jumping his bones. She mused, securing the belt across her abdomen. The two rode in silence and Jade's body was on fire. It didn't help his aroma surround her and it made her want him more. She began to pray for some form of strength against her hormones but she felt like a cat in heat.
"My bad, I forgot to give you my address ?" She slurred, leaning into him.
"Nah, it's okay.I'll take you home in the morning we're already at my house." He answered, putting the car in park.
"I'll be damn. We love to see it. Success looks good on Black skin." Jade muttered, making him laugh.
Jade didn't know what was about to happen between them but she knew that she was down to do anything with this man and by the looks of it so was he.

Chapter 3

Amir could not help his excitement. His dream had come true. The blood, sweat, and tears had finally paid off. Black Onyx was a success and he had only one person to thank; himself. Word was that the line of people was wrapped around the building as they tried to pile in. Amir stood at the top level of the club surveying the sea of gyrating bodies when he saw her. Everything about her radiated confidence and the main character. There was no denying her beauty. Amir watched her from under his lashes as she and her friends made it to the bar that Michael, his best friend, was tending for the night. Amir felt like a stalker as he watched her interact with her crew and couldn’t help but wonder.

Who am I kidding? I am not ready to be in a relationship with anyone. I just started my business and I am about to make some real money. I really don’t have time to deal with no one but myself. Amir contended.

However his mother’s words played in his head, “God did not intend for man to be alone. Plus, I want grandchildren.”

Amir shook the thought away. I am not ready to settle down.

That did not stop Amir from watching her prance around on the dance floor and for a moment he could not help but feel a ping of jealousy as he watched her dance without another man.He could not understand why he was bothered by the scene in front of him and decided it was best to look away. Moving to sit at his desk, he leaned back into his chair and thought about the few women he had relationships with and wondered who’d be willing to be with him tonight despite the fact that he wasn’t willing to commit. All of them wanted to be the one but none of them gave him that urge but that did not stop him from reaching for his phone. He was in a place in his life where he could ignore the conviction he was feeling.

I deserve to celebrate my success. Amir gloated. Some QT ain’t gone hurt nobody.

Just as his conquest for the night picked up the phone, his office door was slung open and in came Chris, his second in command and childhood friend, waltzed in.

Amir eyebrows rose in question. He was just getting comfortable.

“Amir, a fight has broken out downstairs and Michael asked for you” Chris explained, urgency present in voice.

Without hesitation, Amir hung up quickly, and followed right behind. As they got closer to the scene, to Amir's surprise, it was the woman he was watching practically all night and the man she was dancing with and by the looks of it her dance partner was the aggressor.

Typical. A lowlife who doesn’t know how to take rejection.

Amir had gotten there too late. One of her friends was accosted and was out cold. This was not good for business nor his image. Amir knew he had to step in, especially since he was the owner. He did not take well to violence against women especially in his presence. Mike had taken over with tending to the woman and worked to get them to leave but to avail. Her friends were loyal.

“Let her go.” Amir was upset.

He was upset that this was happening and the thought of losing his credibility was stirring something nasty in his belly. He hated being inconvenienced and this was an inconvenience.
"How ‘bout you mind your business. This ain’t got shit to do with you.”

Amir was beyond annoyed and he had totally tuned this guy. He was mostly focused on her and he could tell she was getting anxious. It pulled at his heart strings to see her uncomfortable and afraid and that drove him even more to get her to safety.

"Just let her go, man." Michael grounded out, picking up Imani from the group of  best friends.

“Anything that happens under this  roof is my business. So, you got one last chance. Let her go.” Amir said, calculating his next move.

"Who is you to tell me what the fuck I can and can't do? You ain’t ‘bout to do shit. It’s a free country out this bitch and if I say she’s coming home with me, that’s what it’s finna be."

People were beginning to record what was happening but by this point, Amir could care less. He needed to act quickly before she made any moves or before this idiot would put his hands on her. Amir wasn’t sure what he’d do if he saw her hurt and this forced him to talk to God.

Hey, can you step up for once and help me. I’d really appreciate it. Thanks. Amen.

Without thinking, Amir made his move and jab her assaulter in the nose, "Go get her help!"

Her attacker, taken by surprise, let her go to hold onto his face allowing Jade to run. This idiot lunged to lay a blow but Amir was faster and was ready for blood. Once Amir was done, he knew el stupido had learned his lesson. Amir did not even have to say a word as head of security and another one of his closest friends, Xavier, snatched this fool up and hurried him out of the lounge. Amir could not help but sneering, disgusted.
“He is no longer allowed here. Make note of this and if I see him again I won’t be as nice.” Amir announced, “You all may continue to enjoy your night. A round of shots on me for the inconvenience.”

Amir commended with many shouts of praises as everyone got back to enjoying their evening.

The show must go on! Amir thought. Oh, and thanks again, God.

Amir couldn’t help but think about the last time he had talked to God and realized that it had been a long time and as he searched for a reason, it made him upset all over again but he chose not to dwell on it. Walking up to the office, David, his partner-in-crime, was sitting at his desk.

“David, what are you doing here?”

Amir was in a rush to clean up and get out of here. Maybe he could catch this woman who has been clouding his mind this evening and make sure she was okay.

“Well, I came to congratulate you but saw the commotion and decided to check on you.”

“Check up on me?”

“Yeah, just make sure no one has hurt that pretty face of yours.”

Amir could not help but roll his eyes. He couldn’t understand how he and David were friends for this long. David was maadd annoying but overall he was a good person to keep around especially if you needed help getting into trouble.

“Daveed, I really don’t have time for this.” Amir knew how much David hated his name being mispronounced in such a fashion and did it to push his button.

David visibly cringed and proceeded to get out Amir’s chair.

“You sure know how to get rid of me.” David stated, making Amir chuckle, “I best be going.”

Just as David was making his exit, Chris bum rushed his brother to enter the space.

“Damn negro, I know you big but you did not have to swallow up the room like that.”

Amir covered up his laugh with a cough.

“Man, shut up! Don’t you got a scooter to catch?”

Before the jokes could get out of hand, Amir butted in, “Everything okay Chris?”

“Yes and no. Mike sent me to let you know that ole girl you’ve been eyeballin’ all night is on foot.”

Amir would have been red if he was light skin the way Chris outed him. David oohed and turned his mischievous eyes onto Amir. Amir knew he would not hear the end of this.

"Are you gonna go for girl or are you just gonna sit here?" Chris asked.

Amir sputtered, trying to make an excuse for this whole situation.

"Man, shut up. I really needs to see who got you all lost for words and shit." David said, “Cupid done shot my brotha in the ass.”

Amir rolled my eyes, "Whatever negros. I’ll bang y’all line tomorrow and make sure y’all lock up. Also, y’all bet not drink up all my shit.”

With that, Amir turned, leaving the chuckling men in his office. As Amir made his car, cell began to ring.

“Yo?” Amir answered, knowing who was on the line.

“Did Chris update you?” Michael asked.

Amir could hear fussing and sniffling in the background and could tell that Mike was still with the other woman. Amir still saw the cars in the parking lot which meant he took the liberty of taking them home.

“Yeah, Chris told me. Why is she not with you? What happened to calling an EMT?” Amir was confused.

“Her name is Jade and she decided on her own that she needed space.” Michael’s statement caused wailing to occur and Amir cringed. Amir did not like the sound of a woman crying. He, in fact, hated seeing his own mother cry.

“Hey, Naveah, it’s okay. Everything is going to be okay. Amir is going to get her home safely but I need to just calm down.” Michael consoled her.

The wailing had quieted down to sniffles and hiccups and he could also hear the other woman soothing their friend.

“They did not want to spend the rest of their evening being prodded and rather go home and sleep the night off. Considering how this night turned out to be, who am I to force my will onto them. Now, Jade is walking in the direction of your house and she is not that far but you know how crazy it gets around these parts.” Michael said like the sensible, Christian man he was.

Still to this day, Amir could not understand how Mike and he became best mates. Michael and Amir were total opposites. Where Amir was bullheaded, Michael was coolhead and friendly. Michael was a faithful friend despite Amir’s stubbornness and Amir was thankful for him especially in moments like this.

“Ok. Thank you. We will talk later.” Amir stated, ending the call.

Jade.

It wasn’t long before Amir saw Jade on the side. It was apparent that she was lost and a tad bit drunk. Amir made note of the bottle of whiskey in her hand as well as dried tears on her face. Amir felt his heart clenched in pain and empathy. Her pain strang from something more than being held hostage and although that situation was scary, Amir knew there was also something else.

"Are you lost?" Amir asked, rolling to stop near her. He had leaned out of the passenger window so Jade could see how was talking to her.

After tonight, Amir didn’t want to come off a creep and scare her even more. He watched as she turned to the car and gasped, eyes widened. Taking note of who Amir was, Jade gave Amir a once over evoking a chuckle from him.

"Ma'am?" Amir said to shift her attention to his voice.

"Uh, no I’m walking about to Black Onyx and I think it’s...well I guess I am lost." She replied, confused on how she lost direction.

"Well get in." He ordered, opening the door for Jade.

Jade staggered into the car, her scent enveloped Amir pleasantly. It took that much for him to be fully drawn to her. He didn’t understand why but he had decided that he wanted nothing more than to get to know who Jade was.

Chapter 4

Amir helped a staggering Jade from the car and couldn't help but admire her under the moonlight. Her beauty was natural and flawless.

"I'm not usually this bad," Jade mumbled, leaning on Amir for support.

"What do you mean?" Amir asked as he pressed the code to gain access to his home.

"I'm usually really good with controlling my alcohol intake. I'm the sober friend." Jade hiccuped, foggy.

Amir chuckled, "Don't be so hard on yourself. Let's get you inside and settled in."

Jade just hummed, too intoxicated to do anything else. Realizing Jade's incoherence, he gently swooped her into his arms and carried her to his guest room. He laid her on the bed, took off her shoes, and prayed she wouldn't be upset that he was undressing her. He gave her a once over and was taken aback to see her staring right at him.

"Like what you see?" Jade asked.

Jade wanted nothing more but to see all of him, and Amir could sense the mood had drastically changed.

"I do, but we shouldn't."

Amir had to be strong. He wanted her in his life but in the right way. He was confident that they would regret tonight if he gave in to their desires for each other.

She crawled and kneeled before him, wrapping her arms around his neck, "Ain't this what you men are into? Having a woman for one night?"

Amir gently removed her arms around him and placed them against his chest, "Jade, I rather you be sober. I am not just any man; I won't take advantage of your vulnerability. Let me just take care of you."

Amir could tell Jade was hurt. He, himself, was surprised by his response. Jade was right, he was that type of man, but he couldn't see himself making her another woman on his list of conquests. He genuinely wanted to know who this woman was. Did he want her? Yes, he couldn't deny that but he felt in his soul that Jade deserved more than sex. She was more than just one night.

Jade looked away, hurt, "Am I not desirable enough?"

"Look at me, Jade," Amir urged, "Look at me."

Jade turned and faced him in a drunken stupor, "What?"

"You're beautiful, and I want nothing more than show you that I am more than pleased with you, but we both know you deserve more than a casual fucking. I, for one, want to get to know you outside of the bedroom, and it wouldn't sit right with me if I hurt you."

Damn. Amir thought. Where are these words coming from? Jade, you really got a nigga.

Jade was shock-stricken. Derek had never talked to her in such a way, and they'd been together since high school. She didn't know how to take it, and that worried her. The fire that ignited in her belly had cooled, and she was embarrassed. She wasn't sure what had come over her, but she needed to apologize.

"I'm sorry...you must think I'm some hoe." Jade was ashamed.

"Not at all. I'm actually elated at the fact that you see me as an eligible suitor to give some loving too. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. I'm glad I was strong enough because it wasn't easy denying you, that's for sure." Amir wiped away imaginary sweat from his forehead, causing Jade to giggle.

Amir was pleased to hear her laughing and to have broken the ice. Jade took the liberty to flop back onto the bed with a sigh.

"What am I gonna tell my friends when they ask me how my night went?"

"The truth," Amir made a duh tone.

"Hardy-Har, yes, the truth. Can I have some water and bread? I'm feeling a bit light-headed." Jade slurred, being overcome by the alcohol again.

Amir did as requested, going into his room to grab some pajamas for her to wear and aspirin from his bathroom cabinet. He had no woman's clothes because they rarely stayed the night; Jade was the exception. Returning to the guest room, Jade was sound asleep, spread across the bed like a starfish. She was indeed one of a kind. Dressing her, Amir placed the medicine, bread, and glass of water on the bedside dresser before tucking her in and leaving her to her drunken slumber.

Chapter 5

Amir woke up with a start, remembering the night before and that there was another human in his house, right across the hall. He picked up his phone from his bedside table and peered at the date.

Just a few more days until Christmas. He sniffed, rubbing his hand down his face. Gotta get up.

Detangling himself from the sheets, he left his room for his kitchen. Phone in hand, he paired his phone to his Marshall Bluetooth Speaker, and DO 4 LOVE drifted softly, caressingly, from Snoh Aalegra's lips. Prepping the kitchen countertops with breakfast ingredients, Amir busied himself with preparing the classics: eggs, pancakes, sausage, and an assortment of fruits. Amir enjoyed cooking. It was a trait he picked up from his beloved mother, and although his friends teased him, they were elated to have a cook amongst them. Amir's guests never went hungry when he was present, and he ensured that. As he scrambled the eggs, he smiled fondly at the thought of going home to see his mom and dad for Christmas.

He shook his head. That woman was something.

Mrs. Washington was a force to reckon with when it came to Christmas. Amir was the oldest of three, and all of them were spoiled rotten. Gifts and decorations were top-tier during this time of year, and she enjoyed running around and decorating their home. One year she even forced the whole family to go Christmas caroling:

"Ma, do we have to?" 16-year-old Amir moaned, giving her puppy dog eyes.

"Amir, stop all that whining, ya hear? It is our job to spread the good news! Jesus was born!" She replied, giving her son a stern look.

"I know, mama, but why can't we spread the good news differently? Y'know, I can't sing good enough to save my life." Amir pleaded his case, his sister's snickering.

Amir's father added, "We'll stop by the store and get them to autotune mics for you. Problem solved!"

Amir frowned, slightly annoyed. Mrs. Washington pinched her husband's arm, eliciting a yelp from him. Amir was satisfied.

"Like that'll help!" Margo teased.

"Let's pray for their ears, momma." Henrietta joked, pressing her hands together, "Father God -"

Amir opened his mouth to rebuttal, but his mom came to save the day, "Now y'all lay off my baby and Henrietta, stop playing with God before you need some prayer. It's not about your voice, Amir; it's about pleasing God. If I ain't teach you nothing else in the world, remember that."

Amir sighed and resigned. His mother was right, "Of course, Ma."

Since that day, spending Christmas at home has been a tradition.

Plating their food, he placed them on the dining table. Pouring them both a tall glass of orange juice, he added utensils for eating next to their dishes. Proud of the large feast he prepared, he made his way to wear Jade resigned for the night and knocked softly, afraid that he'd scare her. After receiving no response, he cracked the door open to see her sleeping soundly. Amir couldn't help the smile plastered onto his face as he moved in closer.

What is it about her? I have never been this intrigued by anyone.

Gently, he shook her awake.

"Jade?" He called, watching her brows furrow from being disturbed.

"Uhm?" She groaned, shifting towards Amir, "Five more minutes, Derek. I'll make breakfast soon."

Derek? Who the hell was Derek? I'm Amir. Must be a recent ex, but to concern me with that would be selfish, although I want to know who this person was.

Choosing not to be offended, "Jade, baby, I've made breakfast."

That seemed to be what had gotten her attention because Jade began to stir officially, and Amir watched, fascinated. She blinked the sleep from her eyes, confused but smiling later, realizing where she was. Stretching her limbs like a cat, her bones cracking with relief. Amir took a mental note of how she sat up, eyes closed, and yawned before rubbing her eyes. Finally fully awake, she gave Amir her full attention. Smiling up at him, eyebrows rising, making Amir smile in return.

He shook his head. She was definitely something.

"So, I heard food? Is there? Because I'm ready to devour anything you give me." She asked in all seriousness.

Amir chuckled, "Yes, breakfast awaits us in the dining room. Once you freshen up, I'll lead you to where you can eat til your heart is content. Through that door is the bathroom. There should be extra toiletries in there as well."

Giving Amir a thumbs up, Jade clambered out of the bed and into the bathroom. Amir then sat on the bed, and a hint of Jade's scent filled his nose.

She smelled really good.

He shook his head once more, placing his head in the palms of his hands.

God, if you're listening. I know I don't talk to you often, but man, you did something when you made Jade, that's for sure. I don't know why would you put me in this situation. I really ain't got the time for this. She's beautiful, but do you really think this is the right time for me to meet people? I just started my career. This is weird...you don't even talk back for real. I'm just sitting here talking to myself.

Amir lifted his head at the sound of Jade's voice.

"Huh?"

"Um, everything okay?" Jade questioned, standing beside Amir awkwardly, "I'm ready for breakfast if you are."

Amir immediately jumped up, "Oh, yes, right! Follow me, please."

Amir mentally kicked himself. Embarrassing.

"Wow, you are the whole package. Financially stable, handsome, and can cook! What else can a black woman ask for?" She swooned, forking her eggs before devouring them.

Amir tried not to let the comment go to his head as he went to take a bite; she gasped, "This is really, really, really good."

Amir blushed under his dark skin, "Thank you. All thanks to my ma,"

She awed before returning to eating, leaving them in comfortable silence. Once they finished, Amir gathered their plates and placed them in the sink as well as their silverware, and decided to clean up later. Leaving the kitchen, he noticed that Jade was nowhere to be found, but he could hear talking as he approached the hallway where the bedrooms were.

"I am okay. No! We didn't. Lowkey, though, but I ain't too worried about it. Breakfast and all!"

Amir could hear fragments of the conversation Jade was having and understood that he was the topic. Backing away from the guest room, he went into his room and decided to call Mike.

Hearing the doorbell ring, Amir reached the front door to let his guest in. He had contacted Mike to see if he could get Jade's friends over, and turns out Mike had called the whole gang. Amir hadn't minded because he knew that Jade would probably want to see her friends and go home, and plus he needed to catch up with his friends.

"Jade!" Amir called, "They're here!"

After much convincing, Amir got Jade to relax in the den and watch a movie with him. She felt as though she had overstayed her welcome, but Amir felt the total opposite. In fact, he wanted to spend more time with her, but he understood that they had just met each other and was more than willing to go at her pace. Amir could hear Jade's feet pattering against his wood floors as she hurried to the door.

Amir heard bickering and snickered; he wasn't surprised. One thing about black folk, we love to banter with one other. It was natural, and Amir expected nothing less. Opening the door, Amir and Jade were surprised by the sight in front of them. The shortest out of Jade's friend group, which was who Michael was tending to last night, had grabbed Mike by the collar and placing a loud kiss on his lips before pushing him away. Amir's other friends were enjoying the attention they were getting as they were each being manhandled by their own counterparts.

Thank goodness I didn't have to deal with this. I don't know how I'd cope with Jade all over me like this.

Trying to help his sexually frustrated boys, he cleared his throat to get their attention. The woman immediately began to fix themselves in sync, wrapping their arms around their waist and claiming Amir's friends. Amir's eyebrows raised to his hairline, whereas Jade rolled her eyes. Jade knew each and every one of her friends, and she was used to it. Her friends were eccentric. Each of Amir's friends hadn't flinched and was very satisfied by the interaction.

"I would ask what is happening here, but I am not even gonna ask." Amir trailed off, chuckling slightly, opening the door wide for entry.

"Did you bring what I asked?" Jade questioned her friends, hooking her arms around them in an embrace.

"Girl, you know we got yo back, "Little Bit stated, rolling her eyes but smiling.

"Thank you, Imani." Jade sighed in relief, taking the backpack of fresh clothes she'd requested.

"How is our girl, though? Last night was wild," The busty one asked, raising an eyebrow at Jade while running her hand up and down David's chest, making him kiss her forehead.

What the heck happened between yesterday to now?!

"I'm okay. Better than yesterday, that's for sure, thank God." Jade replied.

"Let's take this to the den," Amir instructed, closing the door behind the group.

Amir led the way, got comfortable on the loveseat, and beckoned Jade to sit beside him. Still unsure of herself, Jade hesitated slightly before making her way and plopping next to him. Everyone followed suit, finding a comfortable spot to park it.

It was silent for a while before Aaliyah broke the silence, "That shit was crazy!"

There were hums of agreement; David asked, "What the hell even happened?"

Imani looked visibly uncomfortable as she began to recount what occurred the night before Michael made it his business to hold her close, and Imani looked grateful.

Chris pipped up, "All because nobody wanted his ass. He had to up and fuck up the vibe."

Naveah made a noise of agreement, "With his trifling, dusty ass."

"I'm just glad it didn't get any crazier because y'all know how fast fire grows, and that dumbass was ready to start a fire." Xavier grumbled, "Luckily, I am in the business of putting out fires."

"You a firefighter or sum?"Aniyah teased, snuggling into his arms.

Amir bit his fist, trying not to laugh, but everyone could tell he was struggling.

"I'm whatever you want me to be, babe," Xavier stated, kissing her fro.

Jade rolled her eyes, smiling.

"But I don't understand how you just start walking off, and it's hella dark outside. Now, you know we don't even move like that, bruh." Aaliyah prodded, looking expectedly at Jade.

Jade shifted under the intensity of her friend's gaze, and Amir immediately pulled her close, and she didn't mind. She welcomed his embrace. She didn't know if she should be upset or not. She couldn't deny that her emotions were definitely in control, but at the same time, she needed space and didn't care what anyone would think.

"Honestly, I needed space, and at the moment, I made a reckless decision however, that scene at the club really had taken a toll. Y'all know ion even gotten out like that ever since Derek, and so it was just a lot."

"Girl, you definitely had us all worried and shit. Imani was losing her mind while you were gone. I get where you coming from, but damn, we yo friends." Naveah ranted, disappointed.

Amir noted that this Derek person was very significant in Jade's life. Amir took the liberty to kiss Jade's forehead, feeling that was what was needed. He wasn't sure how'd she take it but didn't allow his uncertainty to miss out on any opportunity to be there for her. He could tell that this was a difficult conversation for Jade. He also noticed how his friends tended to the other women and was proud.

"I'm sorry, but I am just glad that I had Amir. He was more than a gentleman," Jade replied, looking up at Amir and shining the spotlight onto him.

"Aww!" The ladies cooed, "Thanks, Amir!"

Amir chuckled, taking this as an opportunity to speak, "It was no problem at all. I- we- are just glad you ladies are safe. I apologize that this happened under my watch, and I promise you it won't happen again. You all have my word."

The guys whooped, agreeing to make sure that if the ladies ever were to come to the lounge again that there would be no funny business, especially concerning the group. The ladies laughed, glad to put this whole situation behind them.

"Well, I am glad that somber moment is over. Can we have some alone time," Imani asked.

"Of course," Amir replied, letting go of Jade so she could go to her friends, "We'll be here if y'all need anything."

Jade placed her hand on Amir's arm as he rose from his seat, "Thank you."

As Amir opened his mouth to reply, Jade seared their lips with a kiss to show her appreciation, causing the room to ignite with shrieks of surprise.

Pulling away from the kiss, she smiled at Amir's blank expression before getting up from where they sat. Walking away with her friends, they entered the room where she had spent the night. Amir watched the sway of her hips and prayed for self-control.

"We are totally done for, men." Xavier whispered, causing the men to hum in concurrence, "God help us."

Chapter 6

Jade led her friends into the room where she spent the night and was grateful that the prying hadn't begun. Allowing them to enter, she shut the door behind them. It was silent for a while as they all found a comfortable place to lounge. Jade opted for the grey accented ottoman in front of the bed and sat crisscrossed.

"Alright, the court is in session. We call Jade Rowland to the stand on the case of Amir Washington and the one-night stand." The siblings announced, causing the group to snicker at their shenanigans.

Jade rolled her eyes, "If y'all must know...we didn't do it."

"Gorl, now you know we won't judge you if you did," Imani added, and Aaliyah hummed in agreement.

"I'm serious!" Jade exclaimed, "Even I can't believe it. I made a total fool of myself."

"What do you mean? Spill." Aaliyah pushed, "I'm sure it wasn't that easy to deny you."

Jade took the liberty to regurgitate all that she remembered the night before, and she could still feel the shame creeping back up again. She felt disgusted that she would throw herself at a man she had just met. It was like all she stood for was out the window, and she couldn't help but be hard on herself. She was lucky that Amir wasn't the type of man to poke fun at her openness and shame her even more.

"Whoo chile, well, I'on think you should be embarrassed. I think that Amir might be on to something." Naveah said, getting up to sit next to Jade.

The women seemed to have scooted in closer to surround her as she was pouring her heart out. They could tell that Jade was in distress, and they wanted nothing more than to comfort her.

"He was so sweet, y'all." Jade teared up, "I immediately thought of Derek. Amir is nothing like him."

"Thank God he isn't." Imani grumbled, "That man was hell on Earth, and I am so glad that chapter is closed."

Jade couldn't help but agree. Derek seemed to be such a great guy throughout high school. He was her first everything, and Jade, still to this day, only gave herself to him. They even got married and planned to have a beautiful family. Derek was a man of structure, so everything in their life was scheduled, meaning spontaneity was out of the question. Derek was so anal to the point where it was nerve wreaking, and Jade was slowly deteriorating. After her fifth miscarriage, Derek started to become unrecognizable. What was once a loving home became an empty one. He began to stay out late or come home smelling of another woman. Jade remember the tear filled nights of praying to God that he'd save their marriage and give them a baby but to no avail, Jade continued to fail at her womanly duties which led to her failed marriage. But through it all it, she was grateful for Imani because this was also time that she met Imani, and she was there for Jade through the worst of it. Only God and Imani knew Jade's lowest and she'd prefer to keep it that way.

"What else did he say?" Aniyah asked, "He does look very charmed by you."

Jade giggled, blinking some tears away, "He wants to get to know me."

"Houston, I say we got a man!" Imani exclaimed, making her friends laugh.

Chapter 7

"Can y'all tell me what the hell happened between y'all and Jade's homegirls?" Amir asked as soon as the ladies were out of the room.
"First of all, I wanna know why I wasn't aware that ya girl had beautiful friends? I was beautified when I saw Ms. Aaliyah...she's one hell of a woman." David sighed, "You can learn a lot about a person in one sitting."
"Mane, you dumb," Chris stated.
David sucked his teeth, shoving his brother.
Michael laughed, "I ended up staying the night, so I could take the ladies back to the lounge in the morning to pick up their cars."
"I actually had called Mike this morning to see where he was at, seeing that the cars were still parked in front of the building. Just tryna make sure everyone was okay." Xavier butted in.
Out of all of Amir's friends, Xavier was by far the most serious, which is why Amir appointed him as head of security. Xavier was a sheriff's deputy when the two met, and this was when Amir was fresh into the nightlife business. Amir was dealing with a domestic charge, and Xavier had pulled some strings from him to get it expunged. Honorably discharged, Amir practically begged Xavier to work for him which in turn led to a unmistakable bond. Memories of the past filled his mind, but he decided not to dwell on it and was glad to have closed that chapter in his life.
"Okay but that still doesn't explain how each one of y'all got a friend on y'all hip."
"We rode in David's Suburban since we all were heading your way." Chris chuckled, "And we just got to know each other that's all. I, for one, am glad I met Naveah. If it weren't Jesus, she'd laugh me right out my draws."
Amir doubled over with laughter, "What?!"
"I ain't gone hold you. Aniyah is definitely what you'd consider a virtuous woman. It just radiates off her, y'know. I already got a date planned for us." Xavier committed.
Amir couldn't help but agree. He felt the same way about Jade, and although he was scared, he was willing to see how far they could go.
"A virtuous woman, huh?" Michael hummed, "Haven't heard that term in a long time. I think we should pray."
"Oh, Lord." David muttered, "Right now?"
"Don't be rude." Amir quickened, causing David to lift his hands up, "I ain't gone lie. I've been feeling the need to pray. The scariest thing is I've been talking to God lately, more than ever, about Jade. Feels like things are escalating and we just met less than 24 hours ago."
"Y'all had sex yet?" Chris and Mike asked, laughing at each other.
"Nah, which is not like me. She was with it, too." Amir answered, "It just didn't feel right."
"Yeah, sex ain't even come to my mind about Liyah." David added, "Y'all think it's God? I really should start going to church."
Xavier rolled his eyes, "You should, Dave, you really should. But, nah, I think it's good that this is happening. Maybe we are in the season of finding our One."
Michael chuckled, "I would say I'm ready but I'on wanna mess it up."
Amir shook his head, "I ain't too worried about you. I'm the one with the failed marriage."
"Technically." The brothers reiterated.
"Jade doesn't have Kota tendencies." Michael reminded.
"Yeah, I can tell that Jade is nothing like Kota. How are you doing by the way?" Xavier said.
Amir reflected, "I'm fine. Some days are harder than others. I just wished she kept the baby, y'know."
The guys noticed that the atmosphere had sobered as they were all aware of Amir's past history. Amir had fell in love, hard, with Kota Moore. He met Kota as a freshman in college and she was just a year ahead. Amir thought that Kota was the one and proposed and everything seemed to be going well. Both of them were working in their desired field and making love each other; nothing could possibly go wrong but Kota wanted more than to be a housewife. When she got pregnant, Amir was estatic but Kota wanted nothing to do with the pregnancy and that's when the fights began. The arguments got so bad to the point where the police were involved hence the commencement of Xavier and Amir's friendship. Xavier could tell that Amir was at his wits end and suggest counseling but Kota refused. That broke Amir and he decided to filed for divorce and out of spite, Kota got rid of their baby which nearly killed Amir. Not being able to cope, Amir lost everything and had to move back in with his parents. However, he didn't stay down for long and now he was back on his feet and was his own boss.
"I just don't want to be hurt again. I don't think I'd make it out," Amir was vulnerable.
"God is in control." Mike stated, "Let's pray."
The men huddled in close, eyes shut, as Mike lead them in prayer, hoping that God would intercede and order their steps.

Chapter 8

2 weeks later

It was a busy day at the office and Jade couldn’t catch a break. The workload felt endless as she completed the task of editing the manuscripts. Each manuscript showcased how amazing these upcoming authors were, but her mind was somewhere else. All she could think about was Amir and his inviting scent. The clean, woodsy smell that accompanied him made it hard to think. She wanted nothing more than to get these pieces of art out to her assistant but all she could think about was if Amir was thinking about her, too.
Girl, you barely know him. Calm your hormones, you got work to do.
With that she hustled past her daydreaming and pressed on to get the rest of duties completed before the end of the day however, as it got closer to lunchtime, she was ready to put the paperwork to rest.
“Ms. Moore?!” Jade called for her assistant.
Kota Moore, Jade’s assistant, came rushing in from her office that was connected to her CEO; she was ready to do her job. Moore was the assistant editor of Rowland Editorial which was the fresh and upcoming editorial company by Jade Rowland; fully staffed. Kota respected Jade because she was the only person that was willing to give her chance straight out of college. She enjoyed every bit of working for Ms. Rowland although sometimes she envied her. Sometimes Kota wished she was further in her career, but she worked very hard to get to where she was, and she was grateful especially since she was working next to one of the top tier editors of New York City.
“Yes, Ms. Rowland?” Moore asked, standing in front of Jade’s pale pink desk with gold trimming.
“Please, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Jade? You make me sound old,” Jade reprimanded, jokingly, “Now, I need your help. Any meetings this afternoon? What needs to be done today and what can I push back to tomorrow?”
“Right, Jade, my apologizes,” Kota stated, Jade waved away the apology, “There is some wiggle room where I can cut you some slack. There was a client scheduled for today, but I was just on the way to let you know that they’ve rescheduled for a week from today. She said something about going on an impromptu business trip to Cancun, whatever that means…and since you’ve gotten most of this week’s manuscripts done, I can finish up what’s left.”
Jade blinked. She really loved Kota; heaven sent she was.
“Kota, Kota, KOTA! What would I do without you?!” Jade nearly hurled herself at her assistant, arms wide for a hug, which Kota gladly received.
“I could tell you were sulking under all this work. Plus, I could tell how out of it you were and decided what the heck! We may be strong but we Black women do need a break from time to time,” Kota cooed, all about that Black Girl Magic.
“I know that real!” Jade agreed, pulling away from the hug, “I totally owe you one.”
“I’m glad you said that because I do need a week off since my mom is about to have surgery an—,”
“Girl, you know when it comes to family Ion even trip. Just email the dates and leave the rest to me. I am praying for a smooth recovery for both you and your mommy.”
Kota blinked back tears and pulled Jade in for another hug, however the hug didn’t last long as Jade’s personal cell began to ring. Giving Kota one more sympathy squeeze, Jade went to pick up her the call which she deemed was important. Not wanting to invade Jade’s privacy, Kota took the liberty to pick up the leftover manuscripts from Jade’s desk and left for her office to finish where Jade left off.
Jade scrutinized the unknown phone number before answering the call.
“Ms. Rowland.”
“Good afternoon Ms. Rowland, this is Amir Washington. Sorry to have disturbed you. Is this a bad time?”
Jade squealed internally, “Oh! I’m sorry. Um, no, I am leaving work for a late lunch. Is everything alright?”
Turning to survey her office, she saw that Kota had left as well as the work she had on her desk. Sending a silent thank you to God, she began to pack up her things.
“Hello? Ms. Rowland, are you still there?”
“Oh, yes! Sorry about that. I’m cleaning up my office…what were you saying?”
“No worries. I was calling you see if you would care to join my friends and I tonight for dinner. Your lady friends have already agreed to going and I thought should ask and make tonight an official quadruple date…?”
Placing her vintage purse on her shoulder, she said, “I don’t see why not. I would love to. What time should I be ready? Oh, and you can call me Jade, Mr. Washington.”
Amir chuckled, “Only if you never call me Mr. Washington.”
“Touché.”
“Think you can be ready by 6:30 tonight?”
Glancing at her watch, it was still early in the afternoon.
“That’s perfect!”
“Great. I will be picking you up if that’s ok with you?”
“I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ll text you, my address.”
“Perfect. I will see you soon, Jade.”
“See you.” Jade replied, ending the call.
She sighed dreamily. What a cutie.

Chapter 9

Jade pulled into her car garage before sinking into the driver seat and began to reflect on her day so far and instantly thanked God for guiding her today. Listening to the urge to talk to God, she told him about her day, Amir, her fears, and any and everything that came to mind. Although life had hit her so hard in the past, she chose to always keep God close to her. He was all she knew growing up. She thought back to her childhood and reflected on how he had always protected her. From growing up in a foster care system to being homeless at the age 18, it was only God that got her through it all. She immediately thought about Derek and felt her heart break. He was the one that helped her find a job and took care of her while putting her through college. She was even surprised that he’d marry her, and she hated that she couldn’t give him the one thing he deserved: a child. She refused to torment her mind further and shook him from her mind. She sighed once more and thought of her current situation and felt her spirit lift. She was successful editor, and it was all because of God’s mercy. Pressing the home button on her phone, it was just two o’clock, which gave her enough time to have some personal time; bath time and wine was calling her name.

* * *

By the time Jade got ready, she had a slight buzz and needed friendly company. She had received a text from Amir later that evening to dress formally and decided to wear a simple, strappy backless deep brown maxi dress paired with clear heeled sandals. She wasn’t in the mood to go the whole nine yards and went bare face with clear gloss adoring her lips. Checking the time once more, it was nearing seven, so she texted Amir her address. Her phone binged with a confirmation text from Amir and that brought a smile to her face. She couldn’t want to spend some time with him even if it was for a little while. She felt that she deserved it. Going to the kitchen, she poured herself more red wine. Gliding to her room, she stared at herself in the mirror and affirmed to herself that she was okay and that everything was okay. She affirmed that she had everything that she needed, and she was never without. Hearing her phone ring in the other room, she took a large swig of her glass of wine before leaving it on her vanity counter and click-clacked to where her phone sat.
Not bothering to look at the caller ID, she picked up, “It’s Jade?”
“Hello beautiful, it’s Amir. I’m outside your door.”
“Coming!”
Jade hung up, strutting to the front of her home, opening her front door. Standing in front of her was an Adonis of a man, Amir Washington and he was dressed well. Legs adorned in tan slacks and a brown polo shirt that hugged his chest and arms. Jade couldn’t help the hum of appreciation that left her throat causing her to blush under her skin and instantly blamed the alcohol.
“Hello princess, you look very beautiful as usual. Are you ready?” Amir asked, presenting his hand for Jade to place hers in.
Giving him a slight smile and nod, she gave him her hand and he led them to his car. Memories of that night filled her mind, but she refused to be embarrassed. Amir wasn’t turned off by her and so she decided to let it go. Thanking Amir for opening the door for her, she made herself his car. Closing the door behind her, he walked to his side of the car and slid into the driver’s seat.
“Where are we going?” Jade asked, deciding to take in his features.
“It’s a surprise but I am sure you’ll love it.”
“I didn’t bring anything but my phone.”
“When you’re with me, you’ll never have to worry about anything. I mean it.”
“That’s not the first time I’ve heard that.”
“You’ll trust me soon enough. I want you to enjoy yourself, woman.”
Jade smiled, shaking her head.
“Ready?” He asked, shifting the gears to drive.
“Yeah. Let’s go.”

Jade and Amir drove in comfortable silence as Until the End Of Time by Justin Timberlake played softly in the background. Jade relaxed against the tinted windows as she watched the New York City streetlights glamour. She swayed and hummed in her seat, singing softly with Beyoncé. Jade then felt a warm, calloused hand gently take ahold of hers and a small smile broke out onto her face, but she didn’t bother to turn to him. They stayed in that position until the song finished before Amir had to take his hand back.
“Your voice is very beautiful, beautiful. I’d like to hear it again one day.” Amir said, breaking the silence.
           Jade snorted, “Yeah, okay.”
“I’m serious. Beyoncé ain’t got nothing on you, love.”
“I’m weak. Boy, you need to stop.” Jade laughed, “Don’t let dem people hear you saying crazy stuff like that.”
“Who gone beat me? Nobody!” Amir rolled down his window, belting, “Beyoncé ain’t got shit on my baby!”
Jade gasped, giving him a love tap, shaking her head, “Oh my goodness, you a mess. So, I’m yo baby now?”
“I’m just speaking it into existence and hopefully God will bless me.”
Jade blinked, staring at him. He looked over to her, smirking, before turning back to face the road.
           Whoo chile.

           * * *

Amir turned on to the high-end part of New York City where the streets were buzzling. People were dressed up and looking the part and Jade felt at home. She knew she was expensive, and she didn’t care. She always knew she deserved the best although the beginning of her life she balled on a budget. Once she realized that she could provide for herself, she wanted Queen treatment.
"I’ve been everywhere in this city but why haven’t I ever seen this part of New York City?!" Jade awed, looking out the window.
Amir chuckled, "There is so much more to see, and I am glad to be your personal tour guide.”
Jade blushed, watching how busy the sidewalk was with pedestrians before looking at her date.
"Thank you." Jade whispered, smiling softly, “I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us tonight. I have a feeling that I’ll be eating real good tonight.”
Amir laughed, “I hope that you brought your appetite.”
“Damn right!” Jade stated, making Amir chuckle.
We rolled to a crawl as we passed in front of the upscale restaurant; Ladurée.
"Um, is this the restaurant?!" Jade wondered, fascinated by the decor.
"Yeah, I thought this would a nice spot for us dine. I didn’t ask if you had a sweet tooth…?" Amir questioned, backing in into an empty parking space.
Before Jade could reply, he was already out the car and walking to her side to open the door.
“Luckily for you, I do enjoy sweets. I’ve heard about this café. They are famous for their macarons…my favorite!” Jade gushed, allowing Amir to help her out of the car. Just as her heels touched the cement, the rest of the gang had arrived.
The place was extravagant, and they weren’t even inside yet. Amir took the liberty to press his hand against Jade’s lower back, leading them to where their friends were. Imani was the first to greet them with a smile. Jade smiled at how cozy Imani was next to Michael who was smitten by her charm.
“My my my, don’t y’all look beautiful,” Jade stated, as she approached her homegirls.
“Yes girl, I haven’t dressed up this good since...a week ago!” Aniyah exclaimed, making Xavier laugh.
“You can have all my money if I can see you dressed up all the time.” Xavier seconded, handing Aniyah his wallet, which she gladly took.
Jade cackled, leaning into Amir rumbling chest.
“Ain’t that the truth!” Imani giggled, rubbing Mike’s chest.
“I can’t wait to take you on more dates if that means you’ll look this beautiful every time.” Mike muttered, holding Imani closer.
“Chile, I try, honey. Y’know it every day I get to dress up.” Naveah sighed, “Aniyah be taking all my clothes.”
“Girl, shut up. We don’t even wear the same size.” Aniyah chide, rolling her eyes at her sister.
“I’ll buy you some more. I get how siblings be…always touching ya shit.” Chris added, kissing Naveah hair, making her laugh.
Xavier smirked as Aniyah stuck her tongue out at her sister.
Jade shook her head at their banter.
Black folk. What can you do? Gotta love ‘em.
She noticed that all her friends, but one was among them. She went to voice her concern only for Amir to point her in the direction of the couple. David and Aaliyah were now walking up to the group. As her other friends chattered amongst themselves, she watched as David leaned down and whispered in Aaliyah’s ear. Aaliyah took ahold of David’s hand as he twirled her around and Jade could help but blush with happiness. She could tell her friends were happy with their courtships.
Amir leaned and whispered, “God is weird, isn’t He?”
“Yeah, who would have thought that this would have happened. Each one of us finding attraction in one and other. Dave is really into Liyah like they’ve known each other forever!”
Amir hummed, “Everything happens for a reason, yeah. I just hope that we all stay together, especially you and I.”
Jade blushed, “God willing.”
“Y’all needs to hurry up! We hungry and y’all holding us up!” Jade yelled, gaining the couples attention, making Amir chuckle.
Taking Liyah’s hand, David led them to where the rest of their friends were. With a casual smile on his face, wrapped his arms around Aaliyah’s waist.
“Finally! I thought we’d never get to eat,” Michael teased, causing Aaliyah to giggle.
“Mane, whatever. Y’all lucky I ain’t keep her longer,” David muttered, kissing her forehead.
“Be nice,” Liyah chide playfully, snuggling closer.
“Glad that you all made it. Shall we enter?” Amir asked.
“Let’s eat! I’m hungry!” Xavier exclaimed, making the group laugh at his eagerness.

* * *

By the time dinner was over, it was a little past ten and David—Jade had officially learned all their names—was telling the group about his first-time meeting Amir and Amir was cringing. Everyone was plump from their meal and tipsy from the alcohol they indulged in. The group walked together as they cracked jokes and Jade was enjoying every bit of it. She knew that David was the jokester of the group and knew that they’d get along very well.
"I remember when I first met Amir. Amir was always a pretty boy. Never got in trouble and nose in a book. One day, we was leaving track practice and these dude started picking on lil Amir. I knew I had to do something." He stated in all seriousness, making me cry and trip.
Before I could connect with the ground, Amir caught me a pulled me into his body as we walked to the cars.
Amir rolled his eyes, “First of all, that’s not how it went down at all. Ion know why you making it seem like you came to save the day, incredible hulk.”
Imani sniggered, “Not incredible hulk.”
“Daveed loves to go down memory lane," Chris chimed, “This has got to be the 100th time this man has narrated this story for us.”
David sucked his teeth. Michael gave David an empathic pat on the back, shaking his head.
“Ion know what they talking about, mane, I enjoy going down memory lane with you.” Michael added, trying to be the peacemaker.
“Y’all gone get off my baby and let him tell his story. Go ‘head baby tell us how you saved Amir from the bad guys.” Liyah saved the day.
“Thank you, baby.” David stated, hugging her closely.
The two sisters snickered at the couple.
“Yeah, I’d loved to hear the rest.” Jade remarked, smiling up at Amir disgruntled expression.
“Anyways, so, we were leaving practice and these guys were hustling Amir for no reason.” David continued.
“Still to this day, I still don’t know why they were hounding me. At the time I was short and slim, and these were some meaty guys.” Amir joined the conversation, wrapping his strong arms around Jade waist.
Jade awed making Amir roll his eyes, hinting at a smile. The group had stopped by Amir’s car to continue their chat and although Jade was getting tired she wasn’t ready for the night to end.
"It doesn’t ever have to be a reason. Bitches just be big mad," Aaliyah joked, making Imani and Aniyah hum in agreement.
"Damn right! It’s sick," Jade sniffed, snuggling into Amir’s arms.
"I told them get the stepping, but they had their minds up. So long story short, we ended up having to fight them. They even jumped us, and we still had to spend a night in jail.” David finished, shaking his head at the memory.
The girls gasped in unison.
“Damn, why you had to say allat?” Amir groaned while Jade clutched her stomach trying to catch her breath.
“I had to bail them out.” Mike said, “I stay having to bail David out the pin, but I was surprised to see Amir with him.”
Jade laughed, “So I’m assuming y’all went to high school together?”
The guys made a sound of agreement.
“Expect for Xavier. He was the one who arrested them,” Chris stated.
“Yeah, I got a call talking about a group of guys fighting and they needed a cop on the scene. Amir was so slinky his wrist, I had to tighten them so they wouldn’t slide off.” Xavier joined in.
“What the hell? Y’all close knit, huh?” Aniyah said, flabbergasted.
“We practically family at this point,” Xavier stated, laughing.
"A big happy family," Jade said.
"Okay, okay, enough storytelling. I gotta get this beautiful lady home. This busy woman needs her rest.” Amir cut the conversation short, and Jade was grateful for him.
She was ready to call it a night.
"Y'all men better protect my friends, it’s over for each and every last one of y’all,” Jade said, drawing her thumb against her neck, “Do I make myself clear?!"
They all nodded while her friends burst out laughing at their friend antics. Jade could feel Amir chest rumble behind her and decided to ignore him laughing.
"She’s scarier that the criminals I used to catch every day, “Xavier exclaimed, rubbing his man bits.
Jade laughed internally.
I'm loving these group of men. I really pray that they continue to be the men they are supposed to be in my friends lives because I would really hate to have to show my ass.
"Alright we outta here,” Amir stated, opening the passenger door.
Jade took that as her queue, "Bye my birdies,”
"Bye lovely!" They responded.
Getting in the car, Amir slid in next into the driver's seat and took Jade’s hand in his. He looked over to her and smiled genuinely.
“I enjoyed you tonight.” He said, “I’d like to see you again but only if you’d like to see me.”
Jade returned the smile with her own, “Anytime.

Chapter 10

It’s been a few days since the quadruple date and Amir was sitting at the club going over the inventory for the month and was making a list of things that needed replenishing. As he went calculate the linguistics for next month, his mind wandered to Jade, and he smiled at the thought. He had made his mind up that she was the one and wanted to learn more about her, however, he didn’t want to scare her away. He could tell that she was sensitive by nature and loved her feminine energy.
A knock sounded and in came Xavier, “Yo, boss, there’s someone here to see you.”
           “Who?”
Xavier cast eyes of sympathy onto Amir, stating, “She refused to leave and said it was a matter of life and death. I thought it was best you sent her away.”
Amir was confused but agreed to the request. Moments later entered Kota Moore, his infamous ex, who he loved dearly. He felt his heart skip with nervousness. He gave her a once over, looking into those eyes he had fallen for before looking at excel sheet on his laptop screen. It wasn’t the same anymore.
Wary, “Morning Ms. Moore, how may assist you?”
“Damn, I mean, I understand but damn.”
“Ms. Moore, if you are here to waste my time, I can have Xavier see you out.”
Amir knew he had to be stern with her or she’d measle her way into his graces. She was manipulative when she didn’t get her way and he was way past her games. He thought about Jade again and he refused to allow anyone to jeopardize what they were working towards…not even his ex-fiancée.
“Can I at least have a seat? Ion know why you are treating me like some stranger. We were going to be a family, y’know.”
Amir didn’t bother to reply and made gesture for her to have a seat. Not bothering to look up, he waited for her to begin talking.
She sighed, heavily, “I need your help.”
Amir looked at her over his computer screen, “How can I possibly help you?”
“I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t urgent. Mom has cancer and I need help paying her medical bills. My salary just isn’t enough to cover the costs.”
Amir’s heart skipped a beat. Mrs. Moore has always been a sickly woman but this was news to him. He couldn’t imagine losing his mother, especially at her young age. He still hasn’t given his parents any grandchildren and neither has his siblings. Jade’s smiling face was etched in his mind and he smiled outwardly.
“Um, hello, what about this situation makes you smile.”
He cleared his throat, “Sorry, but not everything is about you. I’m assuming no one else that can help you with this? You do realize that I have no obligations to you. I’m sorry that this is happening to Mrs. Moore, but I don’t think this is a good idea.”
Kota rolled her big doe eyes, “You thought it was easy coming up asking you for money? First of all, I had to do a lot of digging to find your phone number and to my surprise you changed it. Then I remember you used to talk about opening up your very own night establishment and I put two and two together. I didn’t want to come here, Amir. I know we aren’t together anymore but I’m desperate and I trust you. Please Amir, I really need you.”
Amir took a deep breath and stared at the woman he had needed for so long and wanted nothing more but to send her away but part of him wanted to help her. She didn’t deserve it but he knew she needed his help and he was in the position that he could extend an olive branch.
“Kota,” He warned, “Once I send this money to you, I don’t ever want to see you again. I don’t need you to reimburse me nor do you need to pay it back. This is a one-time thing, so I need her billing information and the hospital that she is staying at.”
Kota face broke into one of her signature smiles that used to win Amir over in a heartbeat but all he could think about Jade and pray this moment wouldn’t backfire on him. He prayed that he had made the right decision and that everything would work out for the better but, the devil always had his way of stirring the pot.
“Thank you, Amir! I promise you won’t regret this.” Kota gushed, relieved.
           Oh, brother.

* * *

Finally, when Kota left, Amir called a “boy’s meeting” because he couldn’t believe that he was talking to Kota after years of being separated.
Amir tsked. God, you must hate me or something because why would you allow her to waltz in here and you see I’m tryna move on? Now all these feelings that I thought were gone are coming to the surface. What about what I got going on with Jade? Does that not matter to you? Do I not deserve to be happy? You have some way of loving your children.
Amir needed a drink. Pouring himself a shot of bourbon on the rocks, he enjoyed watching the block of ice crack slightly from the heat of the brown liquid. He sighed before taking a gulp, feeling the burn of the alcohol down his throat. Just as he was about to pour himself another shot, Mike had walked into the building.
“Hey, you! Put that shit down right now!”
Amir eyes widened. Mike rarely cursed and it was apparent at he was annoyed.
Amir placed the bottle down and slid it out of reach but proceeded to finish what was in his glass. Soon after, he was surrounded by brotherly love and he began to cry. He felt weak, confused, and lost. His emotions were all over the place and once again he didn’t know what to do. His friends allowed him to be vulnerable as they waited for him to find his composure. They sat in silence as Amir’s cries became nothing but sniffs. Michael got up and went to the bar before coming back with tissues which Amir gladly accepted.
“What happened?” The brothers asked, worried.
“Kota came.” Xavier replied, allowing Amir to his silence.
Michael eyes grew as wide as saucers, “For what?”
“Money. Her mother has cancer and apparently her salary can’t afford hospital fees.” Amir’s voice was hoarse.
“Her trifling ass couldn’t ask nobody else. Ugh, she such a moocher.” David groaned, falling back against his seat.
“Apparently not.” Amir said, “I didn’t go digging into her business. I just wanted her out of my space, dawg.”
“Rightfully so.” Chris agreed, “Tell me you don’t have to communicate with her do conduct this transaction.”
           “I hope not.” Michael muttered.
“Nah, I told her I wasn’t finna be dealing with her basically. I asked for the hospital information and her mother’s billing info. Honestly, guys, this crazy as fuck to me.” Amir said, “I would have never thought I would have seen her again. Shit wild. No cap.”
“I’m surprised you let her stay as long as you did,” Xavier piped up, “I tried to get to leave but she was adamant. I’m sorry Amir.”
“It’s all good. She’s lucky that I have a heart because after what she did, I should have sent her walking.”
“Shit, better than me but, I respect you brotha. You strong as hell for that.” Chris stated, “She lucked out big time. I’m sure she knows that.”
Amir cracked a watery smile, “Sometimes I don’t know. My heart feels like it’s been hit by a train all over again.”
“I bet.” David hummed, “Don’t worry. Gods got a plan.”
Everyone turned and faced David, shocked. Amir blinked owlishly. David wasn’t an unbeliever, but rarely did you hear David talk about God. His could tell that his friend was changing and he had a feeling he knew the source and was glad for the switch.
“What?!” David asked, looking between his friends, “I’ve been going to church.”
“Since when?!” Chris asked, “I haven’t seen you.”
David laughed, “I’ve been going with Lele.”
“Lele?” Michael asked, “Don’t tell me done with Aaliyah already?”
“I hope not cause Ion want my girl heated behind some dumb shit you done pulled with her homegirl.” Amir ranted, narrowing his eyes at David.
“Bruh, no, chill. Lele is Aaliyah. Damn.” Dave explained, raising his hands up.
“Oh, ‘cause I was ‘bout to get in yo ass.” Xavier said, face curled into a mean mug.
Amir and David burst out laughing.
“Uh, first of all, no, that sounded weird. Secondly, when did you start using terms like that?” Michael said, “Don’t ever say that again.”
Xavier rolled his eyes, “Shut up.”
David snorted, “I guess I ain’t the only one being affected by these women.”
Chris shook his head, “Y’all stupid.”
Amir couldn’t help but feel better. He still wasn’t sure what this Kota situation had in store for him but just like David said, he had to trust God’s plan.

Chapter 11

Amir yawned, checking the time, and noticed how late it was. His friends had left him to his work but promised to plan a boy’s night. He couldn’t help his excitement because he needed a bro’s night. He looked at his desk and paperwork spread across it and decided that it was time to go home. He began to organize his space, pack up his things, and left his office. Locking up behind him, he saw himself out. Climbing into his car, he buckled up for safety, allowing the Bluetooth to connect before peeling off into the traffic. Wars by Lord’s Child played calmly, soothing his nerves. He let the words embrace him and thought about how far he has been from God and shook his head. He felt disappointed and mentally planned for a visit to his home church. His thoughts drifted to his mother and knew that his efforts would make her happy and he smiled. Turning on his street, he pulled into his driveway and killed the car engine. Picking up his phone, he dialed his mother, hoping that she was awake. She picked up on the second ring.

“Papa? You okay?”

“Hey Ma…I’m okay.”

“You hesitated. What’s wrong? Husband, something is wrong with our son, wakey.”

Amir shook his head at the way his mother addressed his father. She refused to address his father any other way. He missed her voice; tears prickled his eyes. He knew it was time to go home for a visit. He could hear shuffling and the flickering of lights in the bedroom.

“You don’t have to wake up pops.” Amir muttered but, he wanted to hear his father’s voice as well.

“There’s no need to hide from your parents, Amir,” Mr. Washington fussed, “Now, tell us what’s wrong.”

Amir took a deep breath before spilling the contents of his heart. From his newfound love to love that broke him, he shared his load. Uninterrupted, Amir ranted until there was nothing left.

“I don’t understand why now?” Amir cried; unexpected tears rolled.

He hated this feeling, and he hated crying, but he couldn’t help it. Every emotion that he buried down within himself was spilling out onto the surface and he couldn’t control it anymore.

“Amir, my baby boy, these feelings, you must deal with them. You haven’t healed like you thought you did and now it’s affecting you.” Olivia, Amir’s mother, said.

“How could I have not healed? I’ve moved on with my life. I am successful. Building a new life and then there’s Jade.”

“Son, Jade won’t be able to fix you. Only God can.” Mario stated, “As a man, we provide the security a woman needs, and I am sure you are already aware of this. However, if you’re broken how can you fully be there for another person?”

Amir slumped against his stirring wheel and didn’t reply. It hurt too much to utter a word. His father was telling him he wasn’t ready to pursue anyone, but his heart wanted to be with Jade and his mind was already made up about her.

“I was thinking that you guys save me a seat on Sunday?” Amir swallowed the lump in his throat.

“Yes, honey, of course.” Olivia stated, worried.

“How about bringing Jade. Your mother and I would love to meet her,” Mario added, voice gruff from sleep.

Taken aback by the request, it took awhile for Amir to think of a comeback. Jade and Amir hadn’t touched on religion, and he wasn’t sure where she stood. He understood that religion was always a dealbreaker in relationships but a little part of him was curious.

“Okay, I’ll invite her and see what she says.” Amir replied.

“Great! I’m expected you both this Sunday!” Mrs. Washington gushed.

Amir chuckled. There was no denying his mother’s love for God.

“Amir, it’s going to be okay. I am sure that if it’s in God’s will for you and Jade to be an item, there will be nothing that will keep y’all apart. Not even the Devil himself.” Mr. Washington added in closing.

Olivia hummed in agreement, “Listen to your father. He knows his stuff. That’s why he’s your father.”

“Well, it’s late so lemme get off this phone and Jade and I will see you both soon.” Amir said, “Oh, and before I forget, Jade is also coming home with me for Christmas so make room for her as well, please.”

“Yes, of course, I expected nothing less. Good night, papa.”

“Good night, ma. Good night, pops.”

“Night, son.”

Amir ended the call with a sigh.

Great! Still broken…

Chapter 12

Jade sighed, pushing herself away from her computer. She gave herself a mental pat on the back for completing all her tasks for the week and was glad to be ahead of the game. Glancing at the baby pink, circular clock on the wall, she concentrated on determining the time. Growing up, she wasn’t great at telling time, but she commended herself for always being prompt.

It was currently 2:00 pm; the sun was roughly at its peak and Jade was glad to have an early day. Kota had taken her week off to be with her mom so there was no inviting her out for a late brunch. She thought about inviting her lady friends out but decided against it. Her mind went to Amir as she leaned into her chair, and she could help but wonder what he was up to. Picking up her phone, she sent a quick text to the man, hoping he wasn’t too busy for her. Not long after, her phone rang, fervently.

“Only if you let me pick where we are going.” Was the first thing that came out of Amir’s mouth when Jade answered the call.

Jade giggled, “Less work for me.”

“Dassa bet. It’s real nice out today. Want to grab some ice cream and maybe feed the ducks out in Central Park?”

“Yeah, why not? I haven’t been to Central Park in ages. You definitely had me at ice cream.”

Amir laughed, “Where are you now? I can slide by and pick you up.”

“I am at the office. I just finished up editing these manuscripts…I can’t believe that I am done this early. It’s truly a blessing, honestly.”

“Yeah, drop that location. I’m coming to get you.”

“Yay! See you soon!” Jade exclaimed, unable to hold her excitement.

Amir chuckled, before ending the call. Jade’s smile was permanently etched on her face as she thought about their date. One thing about Jade, she loved to eat. She could eat all day and there were many times where people would ask her how she never gained any weight. Her answer was always the same: God. Shutting down her computer screen, she reorganized her desk making sure that janitors didn’t have to do much cleaning in her office. She filed away her client’s information and gathered her things. Sending Amir her location, she glanced around her office space for anything out of place before making a break for the breakroom.

Her stomach growled at the sight of a box of donuts sitting on the counter. She busied herself brewing tea while she took a large bite out of a glazed donut.

I hope he doesn’t mind if we grab something to eat on the way to the ice cream shop. Lord knows I’m famished.

She spent the few minutes waiting for Amir by scrolling through Instagram, mindlessly liking, and laughing unexpectedly, until her phone binged. Quickly closing the app, she viewed the message from Amir and grinned.

I’m ousside.

* * *

When Jade walked out of the building, Amir was prompt against his all-black BMW. He was urgently typing away on his phone and hadn’t noticed her yet. As Jade got closer to where he was parked, he picked up his head and did a double take. A slow grin spread across his face, and he gave her his undivided attention.

“It’s always a pleasure.” The baritone in his voice caressed her ears.

She returned his smile, allowing him to wrap his arms around her waist in an embrace.

“I hope I didn’t interrupt nothing important.” Jade hinted, nosy.

“More like they are interrupting.” Amir glided past the inquiry, smoothly, “Let’s get going…I can’t lie, I’ve missed you.”

Opening the door for her, Jade slid in the seat comfortably and reclined the seat to her liking. Seconds after, Amir was in the driver’s seat, securing himself before merging onto the bustling streets of New York.

So, what’s been going on in Amir’s world? I haven’t heard from you in what seems like forever,” Jade asked, craning her neck in Amir’s direction.

Amir smile didn’t reach his eyes, “Life has been whirling me around this past couple of days and I’m trying to figure out my next moves, honestly.”

“Did you want to talk about it?” Jade asked, concerned.

“Nah, it’s something I gotta handle on my own,” Amir’s jaw ticked, visibly.

Jade nodded, “Besides life kicking your ass…what else?”

Amir couldn’t help but laugh, “I actually have two things I want to ask you, but I am nervous on how you’ll respond.”

“Hit me.”

Amir hesitated before blurting out, “Let’s go to church.”

Jade stared at Amir before bursting into fits of giggles, “If that was a hard question to ask me…I wonder what the second question might be? Taking me home to meet the parents?”

“Yes.”

Jade stopped laughing, “You sure you want me to meet your ‘rents? You barely know me.”

Amir had pulled into the parking garage near the park, took a parking ticket, before proceeding. It was a Tuesday, so parking wasn’t as sparse. Finding an available spot closer to the first floor, Amir killed the engine and faced Jade blank face.

“Ms. Rowland, I don’t know if you know but I am smitten by you.”

Jade controlled her reaction, “What time period are you from?”

Amir rolled his eyes, “I am being serious.”

“I see.” Jade muttered, “I’m just skeptical that’s all. We just meet, y’know. What if your parents don’t like me?”

“Why do I get this feeling that going to church is the least of your worries?”

“ ‘Cause it is!” Jade exclaimed, “I used to go all the time, but I’ve just been so busy with work that it’s been hard to balance it all. I pray that God forgives me.”

Amir smiled, “I’m sure he does. As far as my parents go, they want to know who this Jade person is I keep raving about. Plus, you’re coming home with me for Christmas.”

“Oh Lordy…,”

“I promise that everything is going to be alright. If you love me, I am sure you’ll love them.”

“Love?”

“Mhm, love.” Amir reiterated, smiling cheekily.

* * *

The couple roamed the park enjoying each other’s company. Amir noticed that it was getting late, but he didn’t want their afternoon to end and parked them in front of a hotdog stand.

“Hungry?”

“Been!” On queue Jade’s growled, “Two hotdogs all the way, please. Oh! And a Sprite.”

Amir laughed. He greeted the cook before telling their orders. The cook handed them their drinks while he assembled their hotdogs. Once their aluminum wrapped dogs were in hand, Amir and Jade found a nice spot under a tree to devour their food.

“Ain’t nothing like hotdog.” Jade sighed, cracking her soda pop.

“Ain’t that the truth.” Amir agreed, taking a large bite from his last hot dog.

Jade rubbed her full belly as she leaned back against the tree, “What you doing after this?”

“Nothing really. What about you? I’m really tryna be around you.”

“Laugh out loud. Why you so corny?”

“You just said laugh out loud and I’m the corny one?!”

Jade shoved him, making him miss his mouth and he accidentally smeared ketchup on his cheek. Jade gasped, giggling and Amir glowered playfully at her.

“Can you help a brotha out and hand me some napkins please?”

“You ain’t grab none.” Jade laughed, “Here, I’m sorry, lemme help you.”

Amir looked expectedly at Jade, usure of how this would play out.

Jade leaned over, with her finger, she swiped the tomato sauce off his face and sucked it off her finger. Amir eyes widened and he swallowed harshly.

“Respectfully, that was hot. Your hot, Jade.”

Jade crackled, rolling away slightly, clutching her waist. As Jade caught her breath, she saw someone familiar approaching them and was surprised to see her waving assistant. It wasn’t every day you saw someone you recognized in Central Park because of the size but there she was; Kota Moore.

* * *

Kota is the only child and very spoiled. Everything she touched was hers and hers alone and she did not like sharing. It didn’t matter what it was or who it was so when she saw her ex cozied up with another woman, she felt her shackles rise. She left her yoga mat and marched across the grass to where her prize possession laid and almost came to a screeching halt. Not only was Amir with another woman but he was with her boss. She immediately wanted to pull her hair out of its shaft, but she remained calm. A part of her wanted to march over there and cause a scene but she knew she needed her job, and she wasn’t in the position to go job hunting. Keeping a decent stride, she didn’t stop until she was right in front of them. She could tell that her presence was domineering and that gave her immense joy.

“Oh my goodness, I wasn’t expecting to see you here Amir. Ms. Rowland? I didn’t know you knew Amir! What a pleasant surprise.”
