A Walk in The Woods

Fantasy Paranormal Teen & Young Adult
9 min read

A young man enters a forest for protection and awakens his destiny.

Brys knew he had to get out of there fast. The boys from his village had surrounded him, jeering and taunting as they closed in. Brys had always been different from the others. His unusual purple-ish eyes and gentle demeanor made him an easy target for their cruelty.
He tried to push past them, but they grabbed him and began raining punches and kicks upon his small, slender frame. Brys fought back as best he could, but there were too many, and he knew he had to escape before they did even more damage.
With a burst of energy, Brys broke free and took off running. He could hear the boys shouting and giving chase, but he didn't look back. He focused on putting one foot in front of the other, ignoring the pain and fear that threatened to consume him.
Finally, Brys stumbled out of the village and into the safety of the surrounding forest. He collapsed to the ground, panting and bruised but alive.
Brys knew he had to get home quickly as the sun began to set. His house lay just outside the village, and he knew the shortcut through the forest would be faster than the long, winding road.
Despite his aching body and the fading light, Brys pushed himself to his feet and set off into the trees. He had taken this route many times before and knew it well, but tonight something felt different. The air was heavy with the scent of rain, and the rustling of the leaves seemed louder than usual.
Brys tried to shake off his unease and focus on his footing, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He quickened his pace, heart pounding in his chest.
Brys couldn't believe his eyes as the bright, glowing globes of light appeared before him. They seemed to dance and twirl in the air, casting a warm, welcoming glow over the small clearing.
As he watched in amazement, Brys realized each globe was a tiny fairy, no larger than his thumb. They had delicate wings and shimmering, iridescent bodies, and they seemed to be smiling at him as they fluttered about.
Brys couldn't help but smile back, his exhaustion and fear melting away in the presence of these magical creatures. He reached out a hand tentatively, and one of the fairies flew over to land gently on his palm.
"Who are you?" Brys whispered, unable to believe that he was actually talking to a fairy.
"We are the guardians of this forest," the fairy replied in a soft, melodic voice. "We have been watching you, Brys. We saw how you were chased and bullied by those cruel boys, and we knew we had to help you."
Brys felt tears prick in his eyes at the kindness of these tiny beings. He had always felt like an outsider in his village, with his unusual purple-ish eyes and gentle nature. Still, these fairies seemed to accept him just as he was.
"Thank you," Brys whispered, feeling a sense of peace and belonging wash over him. "I didn't think anyone cared about me."
"Of course, we care about you, Brys," the fairy said, her voice filled with warmth. "You are special and unique and have so much to offer the world, and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise."
Brys smiled and nodded, feeling a renewed sense of hope and determination.
As the fairies swirled faster and faster around Brys, he started to feel uneasy. He couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right, and he tried to back away from the glowing orbs in front of him.
But to his surprise, he found that he couldn't move. It was as if an invisible force was holding him in place, trapping him in the center of the clearing.
Suddenly, one of the glowing orbs grew to his height and vanished, revealing a tall, elegant woman in a dark-colored gown. She had long, flowing hair the color of autumn leaves and piercing green eyes that seemed to see right through him.
"Brys, you are Faeborn," the woman said, her voice full of power and authority. "And I have come to make a deal with you."
Brys's heart raced as he realized the woman was a faerie, one of the legendary creatures of the forest. He had heard stories about the fae and knew their deals were always dangerous and tricky, and he had to be careful.
"What kind of deal?" Brys asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
The faerie's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Brys thought she would punish him for his defiance. Brys's heart raced as the faerie offered him the deal.
"You can wield the fae power to forever protect The Seelie Court, the legendary guardians of the enchanted forest, as their champion. If you refuse, you will die as you have trespassed onto our home.
"Why should I help you?" Brys asked, trying to understand what was at stake. "Besides threatening my life."
"The darkness of the Unseelie Court is threatening our lives," the faerie said, her voice laced with desperation. "They seek to destroy everything we hold dear and enslave the fae. We need a champion with the strength and courage to stand up to them and defend our home."
Brys's mind raced as he tried to process everything the faerie was telling him. He knew that he had a duty to protect his home and the people he cared about, but he also knew that the Unseelie Court was a powerful and dangerous force. Could he really take on such a daunting challenge?
As the faerie spoke, a power inside Brys awakened a feeling of certainty and knowing that he had never experienced before. He knew she was telling the truth and that he was meant to be a part of this quest.
With a surge of strength and determination, Brys broke the bonds of the trap that had held him in place, surprising the faerie with his sudden display of power.
"What are you doing?" the faerie asked, her eyes wide with shock. "How did you do that?"
"I don't know," Brys said, feeling a sense of awe and wonder wash over him. "I just knew that I had to break free and do what's right."
The faerie nodded, seeming to understand. "I see," she said, a hint of a smile on her lips. "You are truly Faeborn, Brys, and you have a great destiny ahead of you. Will you help us and be our champion?"
Brys took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes, I'll help you," he said, feeling a sense of purpose and belonging that he had never known. "I'll defend The Seelie Court and protect the enchanted forest."
The faerie reached out and placed a sword in Brys's hand, the metal gleaming in the moonlight. "The Unseelie Court will find you soon enough," she said, her voice grave. "And when they do, you will know. You will feel the call to defend others and must be ready to fight as needed. The Unseelie Court has its own champion, and they will stop at nothing to destroy us."
Brys nodded, feeling a sense of responsibility and duty wash over him. He knew this would be a difficult and dangerous journey. Still, he was ready to face it with courage and determination.
"I'm ready," Brys said, gripping the sword tightly. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect The Seelie Court and the enchanted forest."
The faerie smiled and nodded, seeming satisfied with his response. "Then go, Faeborn," she said, her voice softening. "You are free to go, but remember that you have to protect those in need. You are a champion now, and others will rely on you."
With those words, the faerie vanished in a swirl of light, leaving Brys alone in the clearing. He stood there momentarily, taking in everything that had just happened.
He knew that his life would never be the same now that he had accepted this quest, but he was ready to embrace his destiny and be the champion that The Seelie Court needed. He lifted his sword and set off into the forest, prepared to face whatever challenges came his way.
Brys woke up the following day feeling disoriented and confused. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, and it took him a moment to remember where he was.
Sitting up in bed and rubbing his eyes, he noticed something glinting in the sunlight. He reached out and picked up the object, his eyes widening as he recognized it.
It was a sword, the same one that the faerie had given him in the forest.
Brys couldn't believe it. He had thought the encounter had been a dream, a strange and vivid hallucination brought on by his exhaustion and fear. But now, as he held the sword in his hand, he knew it had been confirmed.
He stood up and looked around his room, half-expecting to see the faerie or some other magical creature lurking in the shadows. But nothing was out of the ordinary, just his familiar bedroom furniture and the sounds of his family getting ready for the day.
Brys felt excitement and fear wash over him as he realized the implications of what had happened. He had accepted a quest from the fae to defend The Seelie Court and protect the enchanted forest. He was a champion now, with all the responsibilities and dangers that came with it.
He knew that he had a lot to learn and a lot of hard work ahead of him, but he was ready to embrace his destiny and do whatever it took to fulfill his duty. With the sword by his side, he set off to face the day and whatever challenges lay ahead.
