All in the Eyes
Soulmates can come in many different forms. Your life can feel empty, until you meet that one person, who changes everything.
Everyone in the world has a particular ability. They can control things based on their eye color. But I’m afraid I’m different. My eyes don’t have a color. I thought for nineteen long years that I was the only person in the entire world to exhibit this phenomenon; that I was totally and completely alone. People who don’t have eye colors, don’t control anything. I don’t have an ability. But when I turned twenty, I discovered something new.
I was not alone in my colorlessness. We had a gift, she, and I. We were the same, if only in one aspect. She had short white hair, I had long black hair. She wore a long black dress; I wore a short white one. We saw each other from afar. Locking eyes, we dashed for each other. We stopped face to face, not three feet apart. She extended a hand out to me and smiled, and I hesitated. I had no idea just how long I had been searching for her.
One day I woke up and nothing was the same. I couldn’t talk to anyone, hear anyone, and no one seemed to take notice of me. So, I began walking. No shoes, no direction, just walking, like I was searching for something. I don’t remember anything before that. And now suddenly, she was here, before me, within my grasp waiting for me to accept her hand. And I took a step back. Her face fell. I was afraid. I didn’t know what I wanted anymore. Here I thought I wanted nothing more than to be able to interact with people, and now I was afraid.
I knew what would happen if I accepted her hand. My journey would stop. No longer would I be searching. As I had searched, I spied on the lives around me. What people did during their day-to-day lives. Always something new. Something happy, tragic. It was horrifying and beautiful. It was addicting.
I took another step back. I was ashamed. I was ashamed that I was depriving her of someone like herself as well because I was comfortable in my loneliness. I didn’t want things to change, and yet I craved it. I craved different and change, but to what extent?
She let her hand fall and yet smiled sweetly at me. I wanted to do whatever that smile wanted of me as long as it would never leave me. As long as I could always see her smile, I would be happy. Becoming comfortable with that notion, I took a step forward. Her smile increased and her hand was offered to me once more.
Her eyes wouldn’t let me go. I swam in their colorlessness. Beautiful and enchanting. I felt like I was under a spell. Another step forward and I felt confident in my decision. I placed my hand hovering right above hers. Then I looked around at all the people who couldn’t see or hear me. I bid them a silent farewell and accepted her hand.
That is the end of All in the Eyes. Thanks for reading.
