Bolla temporale
"Tutto come ricordavo…"
- Come hai detto?
- Tu? E come?
Mi è mancata, in questi anni!
Irene rimase a bocca aperta.
- Dovrai fidarti di me, dunque!
- Io ho vissuto quegli anni... tutti li abbiamo vissuti...
"Logico... ogni cambiamento porta a nuove... diramazioni..." pensò l'uomo.
- ripeté quindi lei, tornando a fissarlo.
- No... no, Irene, non l'ho mai... fatto: ti sto soltanto chiedendo...
- Oh no, cavolo!
- Ti do il mio, sei pronta?
* * *
- Vai a fare... quella cosa là, dunque?
* * *
- Irene! Stai bene?
- Quale canzone? - le chiese lui.
- Suonava tipo saturday's light na na na na na... o forse night, comunque roba vecchia...
- aggiunse lei, sorridendo ancora e stringendolo a sé.
* * *
Make her 95% better
(Time Bubble)
- 6...0...6...6...
The woman's voice was slowly telling the phone number, as the boy and the girl in front of her wrote it down in a notebook they had retrieved from their car; around them, the voices of the group of friends who lingered a little longer before going back home.
"Everything is as I used to remember..."
Without any doubt, as always: Dario watched the scene… at first in a distance and then ever closer, involving him. Just like other times, the experiment was working - without any flaw as well.
And soon he was there again. In his shoes, in his body - younger. And he saw the woman again with his eyes, as young as 25 years before...
Almost two decades had passed since he last met Irene: she had just given birth... it was a random meeting "or maybe not", as always, as he liked to point out. Then just a few photos on social media, traces of life... family, gray hair. Things like that.
Irene finished dictating her phone number and noticed that the woman in front of her had begun to move with an odd slowness. - Marisa… did you write it all… Marisa? - she exclaimed. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that the others in the group also seemed to be immobilized.
"It doesn't even rain anymore: quite logical, after all", Dario said to himself, hinting at a smile. And in that moment, as he had imagined, he felt a pang in his head: his memories were no longer static but like wrapped in a cloud... the "cloud of probability" that regularly took place as he began a journey through time.
Irene turned her face again and then stared at him, catching her gaze upon her.
- But ... what happens? - she asked him, looking vaguely intimidated.
- It's a Time Bubble - Dario replied.
- What did you say? - she asked him furtherly, rolling her eyes as a result of a pain in the head similar to the one experienced by Dario.
- It is a bit complicated to explain but... in practice, you have just estranged yourself from their time frame - he told her again.
- What ... - the woman said, turning around and observing the scene... the motionless cars in the short street reaching for the hills, raindrops suspended in midair, even the light from the street lamps seeming to jerk.
- I am the one who caused it - Dario went on.
- You? And how? - Irene asked, moving a hand to her temples.
- Not... today: that is, not in the present but in the future.
She stared at him. - You mean... all that... nonsense about science fiction, spaceships and...
She froze, amazed. - I ... I don't understand, I don't remember talking to you, after all we just met, and yet... I know that it did happen...
He smiled. - The way this type of... time travel works, yes, when you are involved you have perceptions of various epochs, simultaneously...
- You mean I would be... time traveling too? - she asked him. Then, smiling a bit sarcastic, - look, I'm sure you're telling me tons of lies... even if...
She looked around and then, vaguely frightened, returned to watch the boy in front of her.
- I'm sorry... I wouldn't have done it if it weren't... really important - Dario started talking again.
- What... happened in the future? I'm having... strange memories of a man... who means a lot to me... a trip to Greece ... oh my, a little girl...
Dario nodded.
- But... until when... - she asked, without finishing her sentence, gripped by a growing embarrassment and amazement.
- I come from 2022 and, as the other experiments have shown, the time interval that both you and I can see is that span.
- How old... - she looked away to do the math in her mind - ...54? And what am I like? How is it possible? Maybe I'm just dreaming, maybe I ate too many of those delicious things that were there tonight!
Dario smiled. Another pang in the head, then he exclaimed: - I do remember well the pasta that George used to cook! I've missed it over the years!
- But you just ate it, just like me, a little while ago - she told him.
- You see… it's me, and it isn't me. It is difficult to explain but... there are higher dimensions, in which thought can move and...
Irene gasped.
- But wait... so, you're not one from the group?
- Yes, I am... I was, that is, I am today, in these months: but now I am speaking to you from the future myself... and as soon as I finish this journey in front of you there will be again the person from1994...
- What a mess! - Irene exclaimed, still rubbing her temples.
- We've not been friends for a long time... I'm not seeing many memories of you and me, apart from some long chat... but they are just flashes, then there are other people and... I feel a generic... boredom, dissatisfaction...
Then she suddenly screamed: - Heaven, the mirror! it's me ... I'm an old lady!
- That's why I decided to come here - said Dario. "I mean... not because of the mirror..." he added then, to himself.
- You said it was important... in what sense? - she asked him.
- There were... things to make and do, and without you it took me a lot longer - she replied. Then he looked her straight into her eyes: - We were made to be together and going to places, reaching goals that only quite few others see, Irene.
The woman smiled.
- Come on, I've known you for less than three hours!
- You'll have to trust me, then! - he replied.
- And for what special reason?
Dario took a breath and got himself ready to expose the facts... which he had very clear in his mind. He had had them for decades but in that moment, as expected, he felt insecure.
"How can you always have this effect on me... how is it even possible?" he wondered. Then he spoke: about ideals, projects, dreams and people... science and philosophy...
Irene listened carefully to him: from time to time she was taking a look around, hoping that someone or something would show her that she was just hallucinating.
- How do I know what you say is true... but above all... ouch... so it's because of you, this headache...
She rubbed her temples again. - Ah... we've been skiing together... a nice big group...
He nodded and she spoke again: - I said, what does it mean that the future is already written... why should everything go as you described?
He looked at her and then answered in a decisive tone.
- I've been living through those years... we all lived them...
As was logical, Irene objected: - and why would you, just you, be able to... Come on, come on!
Then, raising her voice, she turned to her friend, standing in the distance: - George, can you please tell me what's going on? George?
Dario felt another pang of pain, and so did Irene.
"As expected... every change leads to new... branches..." the man thought.
- He can't... hear you, from where we are now... - he commented, lowering his eyes, then closing them and opening them again.
- You don't even know me... - she repeated then, staring back at him.
- If even half of what you'll say in the next few months is true, you have to do as I tell you - Dario replied. Then, in a lower voice: - it's the... things we share...
He dropped the sentence, looking back at long sad days in a past that he hoped to change. He had spent most of his life getting ready for this moment.
- But what am I supposed to do? Are you threatening me? - she replied, getting upset.
- No... no, Irene, I'd never... do that: I'm just asking you...
"Damn, I can't... put it into words, it didn't work the other time either..." Dario thought, finding himself in trouble for a moment. Luckily for him, the images that kept going on in the woman's mind were going to help him.
- These people... these friends, were they good friends to me? And for you? - Irene asked him, distracted from the questions of a little while before.
He smiled, hiding the sadness that all those memories were bringing him: she noticed it and said - sorry, I didn't... mean to: it was me... who was important... did I mean, or will I mean, a lot to you?
Dario sighed. Irene felt an even stronger twinge and lost her balance, only to recover soon after.
He made as if to offer her a hand of his, and then pulled it back, seeing that she had recovered.
"Maybe... she's thinking about..." he thought. The cloud of probabilities seemed to focus on other images.
"She is making her choice", he told himself again, trying to be optimistic.
- And you did remember about today... about this very day? - then she asked him: and, immediately after, - yes, at this point I guess so...
He smiled, regaining confidence in himself.
- I remember everything well, and this helps a lot in time travel: but you don't know how much I thought back to the two of us...
She stared at him again. They both remained silent for what seemed like endless seconds, or minutes... motionless in a time that could not be determined.
- 2022, you said... but then why did you wait for so long? - she then asked him.
Dario sighed again: not so much for the answer he had to give her but because he was starting to feel rather tried by his effort.
- As I mentioned, it took me a long time to... be able to do what I always dreamed of doing. And that you too dreamed, in a different way... complementary, say...
- Put it that way, it sounds... interesting, that's it - she commented. And then: - Looks like I helped you quite a lot, then!
Dario smiled, and so did she.
Then they both felt a further twinge in their temples. Dario realized that he could no longer stay: the energies required by those trips were very expensive.
- Now... I gotta go... - he said.
- Yes... I'm still having visions but... less than before... - the girl replied. - Oh no, man! Did this guy... got someone pregnant while he was going out with me? I don't want to believe it...
Dario cracked a smile and then tried to put that sentence aside, and others as well.
- Take a look at... - he added, and then corrected himself and decided to use a less imposing tone.
- Think about what I told you, Irene.
The girl nodded to him and, one moment later, everything seemed to return to life, around her.
- I'll give you mine, are you ready? - Marisa asked Irene: but she stopped her and turned to Dario.
- What were you telling me, Dario? Twice a 3 and then...?
The boy looked at her, a little stupefied. - But I... I haven't said anything yet... Anyway, yes, then 5, 2 ...
Irene smiled at him. - Somehow, I already knew! - she replied to him, repeating the numbers in her mind as he told them, and writing them down on the slip of paper.
* * *
- Are you going for... that thing you mentioned, then? - his wife asked him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
- Yeah... but it'll take quite a little, Irene!
- I know... but it's that it makes me feel strange that... you're going alone: the promise we made, that's it.
- It's just... I explained it to you... - he replied, hesitating: sometimes he too struggled to keep track of all the implications of time travel.
- All the trips you did before... you came and rescued me, I know: then go, but hurry up and... be careful!
He smiled at her and gave her a quick kiss.
- I'll prevent that paradox and... will try to make that old friend's life better than... he was - he added.
She sighed and thought about all the studies they had carried out together in those ten years.
"Paradoxes... yes: so dangerous and so... crazy" she told herself.
- I'm going to read a book with Mirko, and we both will be waiting for you...
* * *
- Irene! Are you OK? - Dario asked, after hearing the woman scream: she went back to lie down and he stroked her head.
- Yes... I just saw you... with a... gun in your hand... you were in an office, and you were looking so sad and... damn...
Dario swallowed.
- Maybe... yeah, I've got some memories of that... even if they're fading...
- Was it... the Prime timeline, the one... which never existed? Please say so! - she asked, still excited.
- I think so... but don't worry... it's all... gone. That is, it never happened - he replied, reassuring her.
They stayed in bed for another half hour, and then went to breakfast. She was silent for a few minutes, but she melted when Dario brought her a cup of coffee and stroked her hand.
- I'm fine... I was just thinking about... I had a song in my head, in that nightmare from before, but I can't remember it...
- Which song? - he asked her.
- It sounded like saturday light na na na na na... or maybe night, old stuff anyway...
Irene looked at Dario and saw that, as it had happened on other occasions, he seemed to be almost grinning.
- You know something that... I don't know, do you? And that you won't want to reveal to me... as usual... - she told him, pretending to get angry.
He smiled and gave her a kiss. - You know there are no definite memories left... from the other timelines: but, yes, I've got a feeling that you were... a big fan of it.
- But that's rubbish! Really bad, and trivial! - Irene exclaimed, opening another packet of biscuits.
- I totally agree with you! - he commented, and then, turning to the computer managing their home, he ordered computer, please, play Freed from desire...
And, as they often did, they hummed it together, distinguishing their voices about he's got his strong beliefs that each one matched in the proper way.
- Hi mom, hi dad...
Mirko appeared in the kitchen without his parents noticing him: so Irene hastened to stop the music.
- Yes, you woke me up - the boy added, vaguely sulky.
- Sorry Mirko! We got carried away... but how comes you wake up so late? - Dario asked him.
- I've been studying... and also playing for a while.
- Ahhhh... okay... - his father answered, exchanging a glance with Irene, who got up and went to prepare a cup of milk and coffee for her son. Then she noticed that he had sighed looking at the coffee jug, so she whispered to Dario - it's because of you, who are always telling him that this kind of coffee is worse!
He smiled and walked over to her, and then they moved to the back door.
- In the next few days I want to go and fetch... with the usual method, some objects: I would really want to save them, and I know how they got lost in my parents' house - Irene said, going back for a little moment to the accident which had caused her parents' death, some days before New Year's eve years earlier.
- That's fine!
- And then... we have to focus on how to travel into the future...
- Definitely yes. I am sure we will succeed and it will be... an equally great discovery: the way in which the Zeit is ran across by the Geist...
- Gehirn! Dario, Geist is better suited to indicate the soul, not the thought! - the woman interrupted him.
- You're right... I still get confused about them: and, would you believe that I have vague memories of myself, rather old, speaking German...

- Sometimes I struggle to think about what my life would have been like without you... and without all of this Irene whispered, and Dario felt a shiver.
- What's up? It's the truth and you know it, why are you surprised at all? - she added, smiling again and hugging him.
- Yes... I know, and I love you... from the first moment I saw you: only these words you just said... remind me of a song that... but how could I make through yesterday without you?
- Nice words, who's singing it? Or was singing?
- Maybe... will sing... - he commented. - Strange though, I seem to remember it as a rather... yes, 90s style...

- Irene, do you like Brad Pitt? - he asked her, as they were returning home after spending the evening at the cinema.
- You're asking me if I like him? I could shag that man even here on... I mean, on the terrace - she replied, after a little hesitation.
"Uh-oh" thought Dario, getting lost for a moment.
Then she approached him and added: - but it wouldn't be as interesting as you are... - and gave him a kiss.
