Il capodanno che non fu
Torino, 29 maggio 2020
Ricordava bene, quell’anno. Quella prima cotta... così tenera e importante.

A New Year’s Day like no other
Turin, May 29th, 2020
Singer and DJ Albert One died following long-time illness.
Dario looked at the virtual pages of the newspapers, and with his mind he went back to ancient songs... an adjective that he used to always underline with a smile. This, in particular, suggested him a date... a precise date.
“But it's today's date! 35 years ago!" he said to himself, with a smile mixed with a little shiver: and in a moment he found himself thinking about that day... the Champions Cup final, as it was called at the time.
High school, then the swimming pool as for two months now... the impending maturity. And then football, which he was not very interested in but which on that occasion... perhaps because of an unconscious love for Liverpool team, combined with a well-known hatred for the so-called cousins or Juventus...
And he was able to see those scenes with his mind: the small black and white TV, their dining room, his mother cooking dinner, sky still clear... the game that was due to start, but hadn’t had a chance to. Before going back to playing, and imagining more or less advanced programs on his Commodore 64, he was feeling like watching just a few minutes of the game but...
Heart on fire, by Albert One, went around his head that day, in those days. Hearts on fire and agitated, as Eros Ramazzotti sang, on the other hand: and so was his, since New Year's Eve... since that dance, that quick kiss, since he had met that girl.
"How strong an image!" he said to himself, seeing himself with his mind sitting at the fake walnut desk, playing Twin Kingdom Valley on those evenings.
But a moment later, no longer looked it like just an image.
He saw the dining room of his parents' house and... he felt like he was there. Really. A short distance from the table...
And over here that Dario, the one intent on finishing his plate, turned as if he had seen something.
A twinge crossed his head, and suddenly he remembered having sensed a kind of presence that day.
"But that's not... true..." he said to himself, suddenly frightened and confused: home alone, as always, he felt fear - a very rare circumstance.
Everything seemed to return to normal. And then again... a semitransparent boy, as they were the walls and all the rest of that kind of... vision, passed him by, turning for a moment as if to stare at him, and then went to his room to switch the Commodore on. And again, a memory seemed to graft onto his mind: as if he had always known that some strange visitor had appeared in his house one day in 1985.
"Ouch," he exclaimed again, placing a hand on his temples.
"I'd better go to bed," he told himself. The strange sensation weakened and went away: Dario undressed and grabbed his pajamas and then lay down. Then, out of curiosity, he opened again a news site and decided to listen to that song: and, shortly thereafter, the random-but-not-too much playback led him to other songs from the times...
“But again! It is... absurd... " he said to himself, as he could spot himseld on the notes of Everybody wants to rule the world, in that car along with the whole group of those times, on the shores of Lake Viverone. And then at the party... of his eighteen: Thompson Twins, Wham and him on the track smiling at his high school friend who wears a blue dress and, shortly thereafter, even to himself... again, suddenly as if that thing he had always known had happened.
"How is it even possible?" he said to himself, trying to shake himself and going to wash his face with cold water.
He remembered well that year. That first little love... so tender and important. A small story that had no future, but that had influenced him for several years to come.
Computer kept playing older and older songs, and Dario found himself from time to time in places buried in his memory, however vivid. Snow, the discos, voices... the school. New Year's night. The day before, two days before - when they had met.
He went to thinking that he knew nothing about that girl, before that December 30th: and, a moment later, he found himself in a street... in front of a school...
"But this is ... where Cristina lived!" he exclaimed, reading the plaque on the building and thinking that he was dreaming of a watchful dream. Boys and girls were coming out of the glass door...
He could recognized her. He had never forgotten that face, seen many times in photos and even live, now several decades before. He moved to meet her...
When suddenly an idea came to him.
"What if... it wasn't her, the one who was supposed to be?" he said to himself.
Having only a few seconds to make a decision, he reasoned quickly. And then he ran to meet her, and kicked her on an ankle.
The girl fell to the ground, while someone screamed: "that man! It was him, he hit my sister! Stop him!"
The school vanished like the whole small town and its inhabitants. Dario went back to his bed but suddenly his head began to hurt again.
"Ouch! What the hell...?" he said to himself.
Walls seemed to become transparent and he felt light... as if carried by the wind.
"Am I... dying?" he wondered, realizing that perhaps all those visions had been, like they say, life that passes before your eyes in the last moments...
He felt his strength fail him. He fainted. Then, after an indefinite time, he opened his eyes again.
"Where am I?" He wondered. In place of the balcony, a large window...
He reached for the window, and looked out: small, red-brick houses; and, a short distance away, some red flags decorated with a strange bird were celebrating the newly conquered championship.
"But... I do know that logo... it's Liverpool!" exclaimed.
He ran to the book-lined shelf in the living room: everything seemed more or less in order, apart from the shape of the room... then he saw a trunk which remembered the one where he had placed his photographs in...
"...my sister wasn’t able to come, because... she hurt herself a few days ago... it's a shame because I think you would have liked each other..."
Francesca's voice rang in his mind, looking at the photos of that New Year’s party. And, with some further twinge, memories he knew were real... faded into other memories, similar but slightly different; and similarly changed the photos, loosening some hugs and forming others...
"Starlet, are you okay?"
Dario jumped up, and turned to the female voice.
"Daniela... but what...?" he said to himself.
Further twists of the mind, more pangs of pain, other memories appearing along with thoughts that disappeared. On a nearby table, a photo of two young newlyweds...
"But... oh, well..."
In a moment, everything seemed perfectly normal: he went to the woman and gave her a quick kiss.
"Yes, of course... I just wanted to check one thing!" he said, at which she smiled.
"I am ready and... this time it’s you who are late: they are waiting for us at the pub to celebrate! I love this city and its people: I'm really happy I followed your suggestion "commented Daniela.
And together they walked towards the clear sky, which tended from blue to sunset red. The slightly scented sea breeze had taken the place of the mountain air, and Dario smiled and hugged the woman close to him.
