My Love,

according to Roxette

I miei amori,

“…she’s got the look…” o meglio SCIIS GAAT DE LUUK!
O i Pet Shop Boys di “It’s alright”. O il poco noto Joe Jackson. Insomma, ero innamorato come mai, prima e purtroppo pure dopo, e quindi… di musica bella ce n’era a iosa… Abbastanza ovvio.

No, soprattutto mi piaceva lei: quando vidi il videoclip di Listen to your heart… quel tubino nero corto era stupendo!
E poi c’era It must have been love - la colonna sonora di Pretty woman.

Insieme, lui e lei, all’unisono: magic friends. E lei era carina, con quei leggings (o come chiamarli all’epoca) a rombi, quei fianchi e quel sorriso…
Avevo in mente mille progetti, in quell’estate.

Male.
Spending my time, già. Triste come Joyride era stata allegra…
Sperando che lei pensasse a me. Chi?
E in estate arrivò How do you do! che era bella e ritmata, di nuovo!

E senza nemmeno poter indossare un body colorato come Marie in quel video (sorvoliamo sui maschietti in gabbia, vabbe’, cose sue!) E poi di nuovo Fading like a flower, Joyride, Listen to your heart.

E Sleeping in my car fu di nuovo perfetta.
E in fondo era descritto perfettamente in Crash! Boom!
You don’t understand me. Perfetta, infatti: tu non mi capisci.
Vita, tu non mi capisci. E la cosa è reciproca, già.
E in qualche maniera tornammo a Spending my time, a Queen of rain… e io fui di nuovo quasi irreale.

“Chiunque abbia amato…”
Eh sì, appunto. Wish I could fly, appunto.

Come back before you leave…

No need for that…”

“…colpita dalla tempesta… mentre dormo, mi sveglio all’improvviso e scoppio a piangere…”

My Love,

according to Roxette

12 years later, an idea hit my mind to tell how, in a similar way to George Michael’s songs, my loves were scanned by the wonderful duo from Sweden… a really special couple!

1989 was a great year.
Yeah, I feel like I already talked about it (!) but… I was not doing that on purpose. It simply went like that.
It was famous because of Tien-An-Men Square, the fall of the Berlin Wall… and because I had chosen to leave my job in that dreary bank, where I was surrounded by pathetic co-workers who, in a few years, would have grown old in the worst possible way… and to apply for a new job in Milan.
By train: I was a commuter, and every single day I was travelling for 150Km back and forth from office and, strangely, I never missed a bus nor a train or an underground connection, in those 5 months and more.
And, one day… as I approached platform number 4, under the sun in May, at the railway station in Milan, around six o’clock in the afternoon… then it came.
“…she’s got the look…” or rather SCIIS GAAT DE LUUK!
The female almost-rock voice did echo in the air. I don’t remember if it was some background music from the station, or some jerk’s radio or whatever.
It sounded nice, The look: a nice rhythm, for sure a nice original pop sound, in those years when techno-music was about to be born, and musical landscape was in search of some decent house music, in that year which, after all, had recently reported a prophetic “Cosa resterà degli anni ‘80” (what will remain from the 80s)…
It became famous, even if not at most. You could hear it on the radio, and, being the first hit by a new band… it was definitely not bad; even if, to me, it stood long behind the mythical “The Miracle” from Queen (nothing ever happens by chance…) or “Lovesong” from Cure.
Or Pet Shop Boys with “It’s alright”. Or the less famous Joe Jackson. In short, I was in love like ever, before and sadly even after that time, and so… there was a lot of nice music… Quite obvious. Oh well, to be precise that song had been released the year before.
And so passed some months – full of sunshine and happiness. Everything was going well, for a while. Then, things began going worse…

My new job started out at its most, but soon it turned out like, how could I say, poorly handled by the bosses. And love… it was not what I was looking for – kinda obvious, if I think back at it.
I had travelled to Great Russia, during the winter that had followed. Almost spring, actually: my birthday, to make it clear. And now that there was Gorbaciov… the Very Bad Red Guy was going to melt like snow in the sunshine and to become an ally, a special place, curious…
Those big majestic squares had such a hold on me: those atmospheres, those different languages… and even those women (that Nikita from Elton John’s videoclip had been in my dreams for years!!) … Before I could realize that, actually, Russians are just a band of gangsters, some more had time had to flow…!
And then I went on holiday in Poland, soon after the fall of the Wall, and to Prague, the following summer. And… I identified myself with Marie Fredriksson, who was singing and dancing in a Big Square (not from Eastern Europe as I had imagined, but in Sweden, but ok) in the videoclip from Fading like a flower.
And she was me. Yeah. Who, at the times, could not admit to myself that I was feeling I was a woman like her, but I could definitely feel like “fading like a flower” when a girl that I could appreciate was going away from me, or that “I just needed some time alone” when things were not going as I wished with Daniela. Maybe just because she didn’t like those big squares… And I was trying to hide from her, but then, as we met, “I could never let go”, no..
And, funny enough, I don’t remember if it was Prag or Budapest, I found the vinyl of “Look Sharp!” in a record store… at a very cheap price. And I purchased it, together with some others. Vinyls were going to disappear soon and I don’t think I ever played it but… but I liked the idea. And I liked her. And I liked them.

No, I mainly liked her: as I watched the videoclip from Listen to your heart… that short black dress was wonderful! How beautiful legs! And how strong was my envy (again!) as I confessed… to myself.
And then there was It must have been love - Pretty Woman soundtrack. I actually did not like the idea of a whore (!) and moreover I did not like Gere and even Julia Roberts, along with her large mouth. But all those things happened in those times when… I wanted a fable, yeah. To quote the lady with the large mouth, to some extent so similar to Daniela.
And I was so sad, because it had been love, possibly, but… it was over (how many million times I was going to go back to it). My heart was crying and Roxette were telling me to “listen to it, before you say goodbye”. But actually I had already said goodbye – only, she was coming back again and again.

Why I used to like this much a girl carrying short hair is something that… I would have probably realized only many years after. A man-like look? Strange, usually I used to like feminine women: yeah, without exaggerations in showing out and… all the rest…
But Marie was different. And, if on one hand I was going to meet some short-haired girls in the future (one above all, Irene in her second phase), the reason at the time was not quite her haircut: but her perfect connection with Per Gessle, the other half of Roxette.
I don’t know if they were ever dating, Wikipedia says nothing about it. And from what I know, they never did. And, thinking back at it, it was just like in X-Files between Scully and Mulder, and the way it had been some years before in Moonlighting between Bruce Willis (when he had hair and was not a badass) and Cybill Shepherd. Who knows why I had this myth in my mind forever…
Ah, yeah, sure: because I am a woman and a dreamer, I just forgot about that… and because the things untold are sweeter than those we told, like we used to study at school in fifth class (John Keats, in case you’re wondering). And because sex may ruin it all etc.
Anyway, Joyride. Its title is enough. In case you didn’t watch that videoclip, go now: it’s a perfect synthesis, it’s perfection, it’s a climax, the joy of living, playing, travelling, singing.
What a rhythm. Together, he and she, as one: magic friends. And she was so nice, wearing those leggings (or the way they were called at the times) diamond-shaped, those curves and that smile…
I had so many plans in my mind, that summer. About love, too, even if they were not including the same girl as before. The which thing was a bit disappointing to me, but somehow it was mandatory. And, as I listened to that song, it was quite clear to me that my Marie was not her. And (ah-ah) curiously not even that other one, carrying almost the same name, an idiot that my almost-best-friend had been dating for years in the past.
No, I’m just joking, I believe that he has been such a friend for real, beyond that episode and some more that happened later. Simply, he’s just grown up poorly, and I don’t think he remembers that Joyride even existed…

In any case, summer moved on, some problems arose but nothing too serious, and I started challenging the world again. With a work project completely mine (ours) and new friends and all the rest: music for dancing, music to listen to…
But, as I used to wake up in the morning and I was feeling alone… maybe thinking back with nostalgia at my romance just over… or when autumn and winter evenings, so dark, did come… then I could realize how I was spending my time: poorly.
Spending my time, yeah. As sad as Joyride had been happy…
Hoping that she was thinking about me. Who? Who knows… the former one, or the future one, or possibly one of those girls I was trying to date, without much success.
And, moreover, I was her as she stood up from her bed wearing that white nightie. That is, I dreamt I was her (and this makes three, and ten thousand more).
Then, yes, friends were telling me that life would have gone on the same, and that everything was going to settle up… and it was already so obvious that it would’ve never happened. And I knew the reason so well, but I was not allowed to talk about it. And maybe it was related to that issue about a short-haired woman…
The silly game of love. Silly, especially if you try and play it wearing the wrong clothes. Yep…
Still, somehow, sadness disappeared and I was glad I could spend another happy spring. And one summer, and one autumn.
And, in summer, How do you do! arrived, which was beautiful, with a nice rhythm, again! Sure, it was not Joyride but… it was happy and nice, and carefree. Everything so perfect, in that summer when everything was perfect. To the point that, actually, I remember so many nice songs… that this one by Roxette was not so special, to be true.
To add to it, though, during an umpteenth holiday spent camping in Tuscany, once again quite pleasantful, me and Laura had two gals as neighbours… two young girls, and one of them resembled the female singer by Roxette quite a lot…
So we started calling her by this name, every time we were talking about her. For sure, quite better than her real name, some useless name like Gaia…
Short blonde hair, yeah, basically. Well, it was not important: it had just been a coincidence. And I had other things in my mind: how much I liked Laura, how good I used to feel with her and… some more sex-related things. Some proper and some improper… just know that, in that summer, I focused and started that tale of mine… that tender story about two friends, a boy and a girl, who are very close friends but who could never imagine to fall in love to each other… (oh-oh)
But… then it happens this strange case in which they swap their bodies, so they have to live for some time like in each other’s shoes. Funny. Nice, too, as I finish writing it I will let you know – it will be worth the time!

Anyway, it happened that Laura was not the One, too.
As “friends”, who would have then spent the rest of their lives among infidelity issues and boring lives and TV series, started asking me “how comes, you can’t find your right girlfriend?” – and I was not able to reply to them, since (in the end) it was not too clear to me too (and moreover I could not even admit it)… I was on the other hand quite angry because, in a timespan lasted nine months, the love that I was feeling for her had disappeared. Some friends tried to minimize, both boys and girls, but I was still worried about that… and only after long time I understood that I had just made a very bad thing.
I mean, very bad from my point of view, but acceptable for all the other people: that is, after having made love to her, I had lost interest in her.
Disgusting. A men’s thing, then really hateful. Ok, I could not do anything about that….
I just thought that breaking up was the right thing to do, since I was no longer in love with her (and this thing brought some fun to my closest friends. Nice…) and I started looking for a new Love…
Which did not come: 1993 was a… mess, so many things, lots of money, lots of travelling, new people and new friends… but nothing. I was, definitely, the Queen of rain, as correctly sang Roxette’s new song out in that spring, as I was working on my computers, and I used to set Windows intro music to this song… and I was dreaming “the house with fifty doors, one of which leads to your heart” (whose? don’t know). And I was also Almost unreal. Yes, in short, inconclusive – even if, to tell the truth, I should have admitted that I was really quite unreal…
By the way, I decided to purchase Roxette videotape (sooo old!!), which featured more or less all of their videoclips, besides the backstage from their show in Sanremo in 1990. And they all were… wonderful! Yeah, ok, you could not compare them to a similar videotape from one year before, Queen’s Greatest Flix… but…
I discovered Dangerous, I felt (within my limits) Dressed for success and I melted with The Big L – the Great Love I was looking for, again, and again… and again…. And I was not even allowed to wear a colourful corset like Marie in that clip (I won’t express an opinion about those guys in the cage, no matter, they were hers!) And then again Fading like a flower, Joyride, Listen to your heart. I remember that the very first video-capture peripherals for computers were available by the time, and the first colour printers… and I did grab some frames from Marie so that I could print them. Together with my very first photos… ehm, un-watchable, of course, that I had just began shooting…

In short, 1994 arrived. I guess I already talked about this too (!)
So many new friends, so much fun, some girlfriends, of course not the one I was wishing but, somehow, it was not going that bad… as an year.
And, we still hadn’t a home of our own, in that spring, so… when we wanted to have some… sex, we were just lying in our car. And Sleeping in my car was perfectly on time, once again.
Nothing special, once again… just a lovely song… I don’t remember its videoclip but it was not important: I just loved to know that Roxette were still working together and that they were singing beautiful songs. And that we could smile while listening to “making love on the backseat of my car ”.
That summer, in the end, was not so great: sunshine, seaside, but my holidays were so and so… people were so and so – I mean, the best people were on the other side of my circle of friends – and… in the air, you could feel the feeling, with some anxiety added, that Big L had arrived. Indeed, I was 27 years old, like the prophecy that I had expressed one day in my childhood…
You only needed to catch it, I mean: just don’t let it go away.
But it wouldn’t have been my life, would it? And again it was perfectly described in Crash! Boom! Bang! to the point that… really, I hope that Marie’s love stories have been better than mine (!)
“Everytime I seem to fall in love … Crash! Boom! Bang!”
Exactly. Well, now it’s quite clear to me: that, if you look like a man but feel like a woman and in the end you don’t know exactly what to do… you won’t achieve much success. But, at the time, it was just a cataclysm… completely absurd situations, unbelievable, so much pain… and the Big Love disappeared.
And, for all the tears I cried in 1995, only You don’t understand me remained. Perfect, yep: you don’t understand me.
Life, you don’t understand me. And it was mutual, yeah.
And, somehow, we went back to Spending my time, to Queen of rain… and I was, once again, almost unreal. And it was on a bright June afternoon that I printed my little novel about Irene… and all the dreams I had had about her.

My meaningful love times ended like this. From that year on, as I like (so to say) to recall… I only went through cataclysms, crazy moments and… tears. But let’s skip that…

Because, it’s true that Roxette too disappeared a bit from the main scenes. But, if not else, for a short period of time they were back in 1999 with that Anyone that I found… adorable!
Really: cool, filled with feelings, and nice, yep. I don’t remember much about its videoclip, again: but I liked it from the start, the same way I liked the CD’s title, “Have a nice day”. Yep, I was trying to, among crazy or silly girls, and as I began telling (with a lot of shyness) about myself and my other side that never had had a chance to live for real.
“Anyone who ever kissed in the rain, knows what I’m talking about…”.
“Anyone who ever loved…”
Yep, indeed. Wish I could fly, indeed.

Ah, my diary in its musical section reports that in 2001 a certain Centre of the heart was on the radio… which I had actually forgotten.

And this one completes it all. Also because, would you ever imagine that… with all the people that would deserve that, I mean… Roxette’s singer got ill because of a cancer in 2002?
I got to know it much later and, as it rarely happens, I felt really bad for her. Shit…
Luckily she has recovered, and they have been singing together again. And Good Karma, just released, looks to me like another – the umpteenth – nice title! Let’s wait and see…
Yeah, because indeed they used a lot of wonderful words in their songs titles during the years: I remember some less known ones, like Cinnamon Street (adorable cinnamon!) or Knocking on every door, or Come back before you leave…

At the bottom of this all, if I think back at it… and go and open that door in my closet where my vinyls are stored, now basically just souvenirs… and I look at Look Sharp! cover picture… Marie smiling, partly diva and partly princess… and that fake ad which begins with the words “Sleeping single? No need for that…”
…I realize how much far-sighted it had been.

It all was already written down, definitely:
“…beaten by the storm… when I sleep, I break down and cry…”

Marie Fredriksson died on 9th December, 2019.
And, I never knew that, she’d got married on 21st may, 1994... (nothing ever by chance)

That is the end of My Love, according to Roxette. Thanks for reading.
