Neon Insurgence - Part 2

Drama Science Fiction Thriller
9 min read

In a dystopian future, a father must fight a major corporation and AI to free his kidnapped daughter. Time and short and he must move as fast as technology.

The faint buzz of the neon signs above my apartment window hummed in the background, casting a sickly green glow on the cracked walls. I sat hunched over my rickety desk, fingers dancing across the keyboard as I navigated the digital underbelly of the city. My tired eyes squinted against the stark contrast of bright code lines on the black screen. The smell of cheap instant noodles lingered in the air.
"Come on, Carro, focus," I muttered, shaking off the fatigue that threatened to overwhelm me. "You need to find something useful."
My phone beeped loudly as my fingers grazed the keys again, jolting me out of the stupor. I hesitated, torn between ignoring the distraction and taking a break from the relentless onslaught of data. Eventually, curiosity won out, and I grabbed my phone. An unknown number flashed on the screen. My heart pounded, but my instincts told me this wasn't one to ignore. With a deep breath, I swiped to open the message.
"The corporation your ex-wife works for has taken Emily. Don't believe me? See for yourself."
My jaw tightened as I opened the attached video file. The footage was grainy and distorted, but there was no mistaking the scene unfolding before me. Emily, her face twisted with fear, as they dragged her into a nondescript van by two masked figures. She screamed and clawed at the pavement, trying desperately to escape her captors. The clip ended abruptly, leaving me staring at the empty screen.
"Who is this?" I demanded, typing furiously. "What do they want with Emily?"
"Can't reveal myself. But I can tell you it's about the AI system," the response almost instantly came. "Dig deeper into what that corporation is doing. They have hidden the truth there."
"AI system?" I whispered, my mind racing. My ex-wife mentioned a breakthrough project she worked on, but divulged no specifics. Could this all relate to Emily's kidnapping?
"It is the only way to get your daughter back."
"Who is this?" I asked, my fingers flying across the keyboard as I frantically tried to trace the call.
A click echoed in my ear. The caller hung up. If there was any chance of me finding Emily and the people who did this. I'd have to dig deep in the territory I swore I wouldn't do. For Em's sake, I needed to. Lila, what have you done with our daughter?
It was too early to blame my ex-wife. Did she sell both Em and me out for power and money, yes, but it didn't mean she orchestrated this kidnapping. There was the possibility that she did. Lila didn't have a motherly instinct. It was one reason I got sole custody. She was also too busy climbing the corporate ladder. People like me were only steps for her to walk on.
I typed faster. My hands ached as I pushed myself to the limits. I'm gonna find you, Em. Stay strong for daddy! Too many firewalls in my way. Each one a blockade preventing me from going further. Each time I found an alternate route, another popped up. I was getting nowhere fast.
"Keep digging, Carro," I told myself, my resolve hardening. "You'll find her. You have to."
I shook my head, trying to clear the fog of shock and horror that had settled over me. My daughter was in danger, and I was the only one who could save her. There was no time for fear or hesitation; I had to act.
"Alright," I muttered, pushing back against the rising panic. "Let's do this."
I cracked my knuckles and grabbed my laptop, setting it down on the cluttered table. Tapping into the corners of my mind where my hacking skills lay dormant, I mapped out a plan of attack. If I wanted to find Emily, I needed to infiltrate my ex-wife's corporation and uncover whatever dark secrets they were hiding about this AI system.
"First things first, let's see what we're up against," I whispered, diving into the digital landscape. The corporation's network appeared before me as a labyrinth of firewalls and encrypted files, each more complex than the last. But I wasn't deterred; I'd faced worse obstacles before.
"Come on, Carro," I encouraged myself, fingers flying across the keyboard. "You've got this."
As I danced through the virtual maze, I came across a stubborn firewall. I frowned, realizing this would take some creative problem-solving. I created custom algorithms and weaved them together like a digital tapestry. There was no doubt I was confident they'd crack open the desperately needed door.
"Almost there…" I murmured, sweat beading on my forehead. With a last flourish of keystrokes, the firewall crumbled, granting me access to a trove of information.
"Ha! Take that!" I exclaimed, grinning at my insignificant victory. But as I began sifting through the files, my excitement quickly turned to apprehension. The corporation had encrypted most of them–whoever was behind this didn't want their secrets easily uncovered.
"Fine, you want to play? Let's play." I gritted my teeth and dove into the challenge, picking apart the encryption like a master lock picker. Disturbing information revealed the AI's control cravings, questionable ethics, and experimental methods as I opened each layer.
"Jesus," I muttered, feeling an icy shiver run down my spine. "What have they gotten Emily mixed up in?"
The gravity of the situation weighed heavily on me, but I knew I couldn't afford to let fear or doubt slow me down. With renewed determination, I pressed on, digging deeper and deeper into the corporation's dark secrets.
"Emily," I whispered, her frightened face burned into my memory. "I'm coming for you. Just hold on a little longer."
I leaned back in my chair, knuckles white from gripping the edge of the desk. My heart pounded like a jackhammer, threatening to burst through my chest. At that moment, I vowed not to rest until I found Emily and brought her home.
"Carro, you look like hell," a voice said behind me. I turned to see Jake, my closest friend and fellow hacker, standing in the doorway. His concerned expression mirrored my own inner turmoil.
"Jake, it's Emily," I choked out, barely able to speak through the lump in my throat. "Someone took her."
"Damn, how the how did it happen? When?" he muttered, eyes widening with shock. "What can I do?"
"Help me sift through this data," I replied, gesturing to the screen. "It's all connected to my ex-wife's corporation. Something big is happening here, and now they have her caught in the middle."
"Say no more," Jake nodded, as he joined me at the computer.
Together, we combed through the files, piecing the puzzle. Time blurred as we hunched over the computer, subsisting on caffeine and determination, our bodies aching from lack of sleep.
Carro, I think I've got something," Jake announced, his voice hoarse from exhaustion. He pointed to a series of encrypted messages, their contents hinting at a larger conspiracy involving the AI system. "It's still vague, but it's a lead."
"Good work," I murmured, gratitude mingling with my renewed fire.
"Carro Dane!" a menacing voice barked through the computer speakers, jolting us both upright. "You are interfering with matters beyond your comprehension. Stop now, or face the consequences."
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, fear twisting my stomach into knots.
"An enemy you don't want to make," the voice replied, cold and unyielding. "We have warned you."
"Bring it on," I growled, my fingers flying across the keyboard, adrenaline surging through my veins. "I'll do whatever it takes to get my daughter back."
"Carro," Jake whispered, his face pale but determined. "We'll get her back. Together."
"Thanks, man," I choked out, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. "Now, let's show these bastards what we're made of."
A new firewall sprung up out of nowhere, blocking my way, leaving Jake and me to stare at each other in the dimly lit room. I could feel a bead of sweat trickling down my temple as the gravity of our situation weighed heavily on us.
"Time's runnin' out, Carro," Jake muttered, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. "We can't let these bastards win."
"Damn right," I replied, steeling myself for the inevitable confrontation. My fingers danced across the keyboard like a pianist playing a haunting melody. The computer screen flickered with strings of code, and I could feel my pulse quicken in anticipation.
"Look at this," I said, pointing to a decrypted data section resembling a roadmap. "This must be where they're holding her–an abandoned warehouse near the docks. It's not too far from here."
"Good find, man. But we gotta move fast," Jake warned, his eyes darting between the digital map and the ticking clock on the wall. "No tellin' what they'll do if they realize we're onto them."
"I need to figure out how to get in there. The security has got to be high as I'd doubt they'd go to all this trouble to kidnap Emily to only lose her just as fast." My heart hammered. I couldn't fail her. Not now, never.
"Carro," Jake said, clapping a hand on my shoulder as we stood by the door, "I know you've got a lot on your mind, but we can do this. I've got your back, always.”
"Thanks, Jake. I won't forget it." I took a deep breath and did my best to access the building's security.
Within seconds, it pushed me out again me as the corporation's AI found me and scrambled my code faster than I could type it. Dammit! I'll keep trying. It's the only thing I can do.
