The Last Dance

Drama Romance Teen & Young Adult
4 min read

A young couple who met at a dance class face a heartbreaking dilemma when one of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Ellie and Jake had always loved dancing. They met by chance, at a salsa class not three years ago, and since then, they had been inseparable. They shared a passion for music, rhythm, and movement, and they felt a connection that went beyond words. They danced together at every opportunity, whether it was at a club, a wedding, or a park. They even competed in some local contests, and won several trophies. They were the perfect partners, in dance and in life.

But everything changed when Ellie started feeling unwell. She had frequent headaches, nausea, and fatigue. She thought it was just stress, or maybe a virus, but Jake insisted that she see a doctor. The diagnosis was devastating: Ellie had a brain tumor, and it was inoperable. She had only a few months left to live.

Ellie and Jake were shattered by the news. They couldn't believe that their happy life was about to end so soon. They tried to make the most of their remaining time, but it was hard. Ellie had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation, which made her weak and sick. She lost her hair, her appetite, and her energy. She could barely walk, let alone dance. Jake was always by her side, supporting her, comforting her, and loving her. He tried to be strong for her, but he was also suffering. He couldn't bear the thought of losing her, his soulmate, his everything.

One day, Ellie told Jake that she had a wish. She wanted to dance with him one last time, at their favorite dance studio. She wanted to feel his arms around her, his breath on her neck, his heartbeat in sync with hers. She wanted to relive the memories of their first meeting, their first kiss, their first dance. She wanted to say goodbye to him in the way that they both understood best.

Jake agreed to fulfill her wish. He arranged everything with the studio owner, who was a friend of theirs. He borrowed a wheelchair from the hospital, and drove Ellie to the studio. He helped her out of the car, and wheeled her inside. The studio was empty, except for a stereo and a disco ball. Jake turned on the music, and lifted Ellie out of the wheelchair. He held her close, and gently swayed with her. Ellie smiled, and wrapped her arms around him. She felt a surge of love, and a pang of sadness. She knew this was their last dance.

They danced for a while, slowly and softly, to their favorite songs. They didn't speak, they didn't need to. They communicated with their eyes, their expressions, their touches. They said everything they wanted to say, without saying anything at all. They thanked each other, they apologized to each other, they forgave each other, they promised each other. They danced until Ellie's strength gave out, and she collapsed in Jake's arms. He carried her back to the wheelchair, and kissed her forehead. He whispered in her ear, "I love you, Ellie. You are my dance partner, forever and always." Ellie smiled, and closed her eyes. She whispered back, "I love you, Jake. You are my dance partner, forever and always." Then, she stopped breathing.

Jake held her body, and cried. He cried for Ellie, he cried for himself, he cried for their lost future. He cried until he had no tears left. Then, he looked up at the disco ball, and saw a thousand tiny lights. He felt a warm breeze, and heard a faint music. He felt a gentle touch, and heard a soft voice. He smiled, and opened his arms. He knew Ellie was waiting for him, for their next dance.
