The Wolf Within

Paranormal Teen & Young Adult Thriller
6 min read

A young man discovers he has inherited a genetic condition that turns him into a werewolf every full moon.

It was my twenty-first birthday and the day of the full moon. My family had gathered at home to celebrate, but I wondered why so many came. When it came to events, everyone did their own thing.
Turning twenty-one was a big deal for them. My parents acted weird, and the rest of my family was the same. It drove me nuts, but I had other things to worry about.
The night of my birthday felt different. I couldn't focus on anything and could feel every movement in the house. My palms were sweating, and it felt like I had a fever. When my dad asked me if something was wrong, I knew he could tell something wasn't right.
My senses had heightened; I could smell things that weren't there before, and my vision seemed to sharpen. I thought this must be what people meant when they said their eyes glowed in the dark. The darkness seemed to dance around me like some unseen force was drawing me in.
I noticed that everyone else seemed to be feeling the same thing; their skin looked pale, and their eyes glowed with an intensity that almost scared me. Oddly enough, we all ended up outside, standing around a thin wisp of smoke from the fire pit my dad had built for us earlier that day.
We stood there staring at each other. My family and I talked politely, but no one mentioned we all sweat and had an air of paranoia about us. When I woke up, I thought I was sick, and now I wonder if there's something bigger happening.
Suddenly, a mysterious figure appeared from the shadows. She stood tall and thin, with long silver hair that shone in the light. She glided lightly into the room. Everyone was hushed at her entrance. A look of awe on their faces.
"That's your grandmother, Samuel, the matriarch of our family," my dad said.
"What? I thought she died long ago," I said, disbelieving my ears.
"It's a long story, Sam, but tonight will open up things we kept from you."
"What do you mean?"
"Shhh, listen."
"You are all connected to the full moon," she says in a deep, powerful voice. "The power of the full moon is in your blood, coursing through your veins like an ancient river. During this time of year, it will bring great strength and wisdom - provided you use it correctly."
She pointed to each of us in turn, reminding us that if we listen to our inner voice and trust ourselves, everything will be alright. I shivered at the words as my parents and the others nodded in agreement.
"Tonight, my grandson come off age where the moon's powers shall manifest in him," she said.
The others murmured. The creep level grew strong, and part of me wanted to run. Was my family a religious cult of some kind? It didn't matter. I took a step back and then another.
The grandmother's voice grew louder and deeper as she continued. A strange tingling sensation coursed through my veins, and a sudden power surge surged through me. It burns as if my veins were on fire.
Everything snapped in focus with extreme detail. My eyes saw every color on the spectrum with full vibrancy. The sounds of my family echoed in my ear as I heard every single word exit their mouths.
The chicken on the grill and the smell of fear from the neighbor's dog reached my nose. I took a step back but couldn't. My sense was too much for me. I could hear the rustle of tree branches in the breeze outside.
The family watched on in awe, but this time with admiration instead of fear. As if something inside them was recognizing what was happening to me - something they had been waiting for all these years.
My grandmother then raised her hands towards the sky and began chanting an ancient ritual, her words rolling off like thunder resonating around us. She gestured for us to join in the chant. Before long, our voices filled the air with a powerful energy that vibrated throughout my entire body.
As if someone had flicked an internal switch, I felt an immense power begin to pulse within me as if I could do anything I wanted. Whatever it was hurt and burned. Like every cell in my body popped. Even my bones brought me excruciating pain.
"Relax, Sam. It'll be okay. The first time is always this way," said my father.
"What's happening to me?" I asked, glancing up. I didn't notice that I had doubled over due to the pain.
My fingers and toes began to tingle, then my entire body convulsed until I dropped to the ground shaking uncontrollably. My dad and mom rushed to my side, but they couldn't stop what was happening - whatever it was.
"What is happening to me?"
My grandmother knelt in front of me. "You, my grandson, are changing into your true self. The moon's power has you in its grip like the rest of us," she said.
Her eyes glowed yellow and grew feral. His smile grew gruesome as her teeth warped into fangs like a wolf. She let loose a soft growl to reassure me of the process, and it hurt too much.
For a moment, I felt like this power would rip me apart and rebuild from within - the essence of me transforming into something else. As if I were a puppet in some grand show. My face stretched and contorted as fur erupted all over my body, forming sharp claws on my fingertips and toes.
The pain faded away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of clarity as if someone had switched on a lightbulb in the deepest corner of my mind. When it was over, I saw that everyone around me had transformed into werewolves like me!
We howled together at the moonlight that shone down upon us from above. It felt absolutely glorious!
