EPISODE 4

CIVILIZING SAVAGES

INT. SUPERMARKET
Timothy is in a neighborhood supermarket with his small tote bag, picking out the best tomatoes for salad. Timothy only uses a small tote bag, and only shops when he is out of food. Timothy notices another man loading fruits and vegetables into a cart. Timothy can sense that Guardian are about to appear.
 

Timothy

Wait!

The man looks up at Timothy with slight fear, that turns into anger. Guardian pause on their appearance.

Hoarder

Mind your business.

Timothy

There is no need to take so much, there’s enough for everyone.

Hoarder

You can’t see supply getting low? I’m not gonna starve later.

Timothy

There is plenty enough to hold us until we can produce more. You haven’t noticed that there are far less people now?

Hoarder

Yeah, that’s why I gotta build up supply. When it all goes down, I’ll have enough for me and to trade. You’ll see, and don’t come to me when you’re desperate.

Timothy

I think we’re beyond trading at this point. When’s the last time you needed money to do anything?

Hoarder

Since those damn things took over.

Timothy

Right, so what are you doing hoarding food to rot in your house while others could be eating it?

Hoarder

You’re right. I should get canned goods, they last longer.

Timothy

You should get what you need to eat, then return when you need more.

Hoarder

You have no idea what those things have planned for us.

Timothy

They want us to become civilized, to prove we’re not savages.

Hoarder laughs hard for a few seconds. He laughs so hard that tears run down his face.

Hoarder

When the hell have human beings been civilized?

Timothy

We have a chance to make the evolutionary shift that has been on hold too long.

Hoarder

I’m gonna evolve over to canned goods and stock up.

Timothy

You haven’t noticed that savages are disappearing, how calm things are?

Hoarder

Watch your mouth. Those things took some of my family away. What gave them the right? What gives you the right to manage my business?

Timothy

Our destructive ways gave them the right. You just said that we have been savage, and I’m trying to save your life.

Hoarder

We are savages. It’s what humans are, always have been, and always will be. You dreaming if you think anything else is gonna happen. I’m minding my business, and you should do the same thing, Mr. Civilized.

Timothy

I was just trying to convince you of another way before it’s too late, but I can see that you’re set in your ways. It’s too bad, we could have used you.

Hoarder

Whatever.

Hoarder turns to walk towards the canned goods aisle of the supermarket. Guardian appears and takes Hoarder’s energy, leaving nothing behind. A few people drop their groceries and run outside. Timothy continues to pick out his tomatoes. Some people return some of their groceries, watching to see how much Timothy takes. Timothy walks outside to a small crowd. Someone says “That’s Him”. Someone else from the crowd yells “Are You With Them?” Timothy faces the crowd and looks into their eyes.

Timothy

I’m with us. I will be with us until our last day, which will be soon if you all can’t change your thinking from the I to We, and We includes beings from other parts of the cosmos. Human beings are far behind the other beings. You see what they have done, Guardians or any of the other beings don’t need us around. If you can expand your minds, I will be glad to be your neighbors in a new way of life. If we fail this test, I will disappear with the rest of humanity. Our continued existence is in each other’s hands.

Timothy turns to walk away. Some of the crowd follows him to his apartment. They take the empty apartments in Timothy’s building. Timothy puts his tomatoes and small red cabbage in his refrigerator, then sits down to monitor his device for the actions of Guardians.
