MEDIA DAY

INT. MAGGY’S APARTMENT
Maggy sits at the table with Peter.
 

Maggy

You have a spot on one of the political shows this Sunday. They want to know if you want the questions ahead of time.

Peter

You think I need that?

Maggy

It’s up to you. We’re just making a statement with this campaign, so you can do whatever you want.

Peter

Imagine us in Gracie Mansion.

Maggy and Peter laugh.

Peter

I don’t need the questions. I’m sure they won’t even ask relevant questions, and I have plenty of answers.

Maggy

Oh, you think you know everything now, Mr. philosopher?

Peter

I know I’m your sweet Peter.

Maggy

Don’t get too comfortable there big shot.

Peter stands up and walks over to Maggy to sit in her lap.

Peter

You mean like this.

Maggy

You better get off my legs.

Peter

Give me kisses first.

Maggy turns her face to keep Peter from kissing her lips.

Peter

Kissy, kissy, kissy.

Maggy

Stop it!

Peter keeps kissing Maggy’s face, head, eyes, etc. Finally Maggy kisses Peter on the lips. Peter stands up to walk over to the couch. Maggy spanks Peter’s butt as he walks away from her.

Maggy

You’re so bad.

Peter

You love it.

END SCENE

INT. CUNY STUDIO
Peter is standing in a hallway waiting to be seated on the set of a CUNY political show. CUNY is the City University of New York, and its shows are local programming for New Yorkers to hear political and social news. Peter sits down across from Jim Zone, the host.
 

Peter

How are you today?

Jim Zone

Fine, and you?

Peter

Taking it one day at a time.

The technical staff clips microphones on to Jim Zone and Peter. The camera crew counts down and the host gives a short introduction.

Jim Zone

So, Peter, let’s get to the most important question, Do you actually expect to become mayor of New York City?

Peter

At first, I was running to bring attention to certain issues, but I saw how few people voted for our current mayor and I thought that I could become mayor with only ten percent of eligible voters and fix our city.

Jim Zone

Interesting. Let’s talk about the biggest issue in our city, housing. What is your plan for our growing homeless population.

Peter

I have a few ideas. The first one is for the city to rent apartments throughout our city, then process our houseless people into those apartments instead of shelters. The second idea is to buy buildings and increase our NYCHA stock, as I renovate our current NYCHA units. The third idea is to see if it would be possible to renovate every shelter space into permanent housing units.

Jim Zone

I’m intrigued. Let’s deal with the other major issue, public transportation. What’s your plan for a failing subway system.

Peter

I would look at the costs of turnstiles, card vending machines, and booths to see if it would be cheaper to make the subway free. I would rent the old token booths to businesses. I would also increase the fee for ad space in the subways and on the trains to make up the difference.

Jim Zone

Now you’ve gone too far. The unions would eat up Peter.

Peter

The people of our city will decide whether they want to live in a twenty-first century city that is alive or continue to live in a dying city.

Jim Zone

What about traffic on the streets?

Peter

I think that fixing the houseless issue and putting more action in our subway system will entice people to use our rapid transit more, and take some of those cars off the streets, so that our buses can move with less problems. Mr. Zone can you imagine New Yorkers spending that gas and automobile insurance money on the city itself, and the reduction in automobile deaths, not to mention pollution.

Jim Zone

I cannot, but I am an old crusty New Yorker. Let’s get serious. How are you gonna get votes in deeply divided city?

Peter

Some New Yorkers are tired of the racism in the city, Others need to stop promoting black people who make them comfortable and promote the thoughtful ones, as you can see, we exist. The racists will always be racists and will never vote for me.

Jim Zone

That’s a powerful place to stop. Peter, I’m not sure what to make of you, but I enjoyed speaking with you.

Peter

Any time Mr. Zone.

Jim Zone turns to the camera.

Jim Zone

I’ll be right back with my weekly commentary.

The technical staff takes the microphone from Peter’s shirt. Peter stands up. Jim Zone stands up with him. Jim Zone shakes Peter’s hand firmly.

Jim Zone

This is gonna be a hell of an election. See you out there.

Peter

I look forward to it. Take care.

Jim Zone

You too.

Peter walks to the hallway where Ibo is standing.

Peter

Where’s Maggy?

Ibo

She went to get the car.

Peter

How did I do?

Ibo

You’re a natural. You made her nervous.

Peter

Really?

Ibo

She thinks you may win this thing.

Peter laughs and pats Ibo on the shoulder.

Peter

Come on man, let’s go get something to eat.
