The Last Meal
She is done with it. This time, there is no way back.
As soon as he got in the house, she knew.
He had been drinking. She could smell it off from him; the gum he was chewing couldn’t fooled her. She noticed that his shirt was missing a button but realized that he didn’t know he was missing one. And even with the cheap cologne he was wearing, she was able to catch a slight trace of woman’s perfume. But it wasn’t hers.
He talked to her like any other time, same subjects, and same manner. And all this while he poured himself some whisky and loosened up his tie. She looked at him as always but viewed him differently. How could he have done that? Why? These were answers that she might never get, and she knew that.
In 30 years of marriage, it was expected that she had learned a thing or two about him. And she did. Plenty. But the thing that she didn’t expect to learn, was from her own self. She was stronger than she’d imagined. For many years she was afraid of being alone and poor, he was the one who provided the money while she was a housewife. But time proved her wrong. And although she knew that how she was being loved was not right, she now understood it had to stop.
She also knew exactly what was about to happen. After finishing the whisky and complaining about work and life, he would want to eat. It didn’t matter what, the beast was starving and whatever was good enough.
Oh, but she knew better than that. She knew him better than the ABC, and he didn’t have a clue. She knew her man like a good steak; just how they used to make them in the ol’ days. And because she knew, she had anticipated on what to do to calm the beast. She ordered a prime piece of raw meat from a fancy meat shop; 8 ounces of pure flavor and a damn expensive bill. But she paid for it gladly with his money. The best money she ever spent.
His face lighted up like a kid’s in Christmas. The sound of a sizzling juicy steak made his mouth drooled. And on top of that, for it to be prepared by his lovely wife, he was in paradise. Or so he thought.
She used the best china and silverware. And next to the steak she served some mash potatoes. Now he would even call her something nice for that extra detail. She placed his dinner in front him and finished off by pouring more whisky in his glass. He called her cutie and thanked her by spanking her ass. Her fake smile was impeccable. And the beast finally started devouring his last meal.
