Dear Nathaniel

Warm summer days and lonely nights has been Nathaniel's existence as of late. His last date had been a few months ago and it went awfully with her not even listening to a single word he said. It's a reminder that dating isn't the same as it was in high-school and thinking of school makes him think of her. A girl he never knew but he often felt her eyes on him...

He wonders about her life, if she found happiness when he did not. The walk around the public park has him invested in the past and perhaps the mistakes he made along the way. That is until he sees a letter, folded neatly and in a flower pot on the walk. It could be trash but something inside him told him it was not. He unfolds it and can't believe not only the letter but who it's addressed to.

Dear: Nathaniel
You may not remember me, well you didn't even know me. My name is Lucy and we were classmates years ago. It was so long ago, it almost feels like a dream now that a decade has passed. I write this letter, knowing you'll never find it. The contents aren't vile or  to persuade you, it's simply a confession to the heartache I went through.
I loved you once upon a time, when we were fifteen years old and you were a boy with a dream in singing to the world and I was a girl just looking for love and a boy who'd turn into a man and would promise me marriage and a family. Our dreams really were different and so I got married and you pursued every hope and dream you've ever had and I admire that tremendously. 
I can't tell you why I loved you then or why my heart held onto you despite our differences but it did and so this too is an apology for every wanting  a boy, now a man who could never be mine. I hope you're doing well and that life feels like a rainbow with sun that never ceases to exist but while this letter is sweet, it's also meant to show defeat, you see my life wasn't perfect, nor has it been bearable all these years and so this letter is a confession and a goodbye to all those I leave behind. 
I tried to fulfill my dreams but with no such luck, I'm now lost and lonely, always hoping for the world to change but it hasn't. I wanted to live till I was gray and old but now I depart into the blue, to let the world take me away to someplace new. 

Nathaniel feels his heart burn and for once he realizes every glance she made, he had too. It wasn't just her feelings, it is his own. She was the path not taken and she's all alone. He looks around the park and there he sees a lake and without a second thought he dives in, wondering if he got here too late.

People talk as they gawk at the man in the pond but he reaches all around until he feels a hand. 
He pulls with all he has as she comes up and he sees her pale face and his heart is elated, except she's not breathing as he pulls her to the shore and he starts compressions as sirens are heard all around them. He breathes into her, their lips touching as a wave of electricity surges through them and another second goes by before she gasps, looking back into those eyes that are finally looking back into her own.
