Pink And White
A marriage she does not want, an escape being her only way out but what if another kind of beast lies wait inside the forest, between the trees?
The night of her twentieth birthday, she's set to meet the man she's meant to marry, only he's old and he smells of rich ale as it makes it's rounds to all the tables. The candlelight and flowers put out or dead as all romance is cast out of the room, like her heart as she's to wed out of duty, property and taxes from East to now West, claiming another kingdom as their own.
She's solemn in pink even as it glitters, it does not calm her racing heart and dead pan eyes. "Olivia, you must greet your soon to be husband." She tries to lift her lips, a smile does not come and she sees the anger flash in King Rainer's eyes. She looks away in dismay and her father flashes a smile at him for her, before he walks away to greet many more guests.
Is this her life?
She asks to no one as she looks across the room at a window shadowed by the trees. An idea arises as Olivia stands but her father gives her a look.
"The water closet." She says and he nods his head and for the first time she feels it, her true heart is back, alive and well as she passes by the guards and quickening her steps, she starts to run down the halls, to the doors.
Once outside she's free in a way she never was before and she feels the mud kicking up onto her legs but she doesn't care for once she's in that forest, she's surrounded by no one and she keeps running. Nothing can stop her, not even the guns shot into the air until a growl and some fur that starts to circle around her.
What is it?
She thinks but does not say a word as she halts and hears more in the distance as a white one comes forward, a wolf and it shatters her decision.
She was free at last but only for a moment, now she will die for defying her fathers wishes. "Don't kill me." She calls out as the wolf closes the distance and she hears her fathers voice calling.
"Olivia, you are to marry!"
He yells and a shutter runs through her and the wolf tilts his head as if curious if the man speaks about her. The conclusion is yes and the wolf turns around as more wolves jump from the trees and bushes. They growl and stand their ground against the humans and she feels suddenly protected as she cowers back.
The humans all stand back, a few even gasp or scream and her father looks at her, disappointment clear in his eyes. He's first to turn away as if to leave her to the beasts and once they're all gone, they turn around as if she's their meat.
Only the white wolf is suddenly a man, a naked man and she shakes in fear.
"What is this?"
Olivia asks as all the wolves transform and she wonders what kind of beasts would dare to shape themselves into men, the worst of all monsters.
That is the end of Pink And White. Thanks for reading.
